Decohere
Decohere is a browser-based generative studio that turns text prompts into images and four-second videos in real time, with 4x upscaling, reusable AI characters and style stations. A permanent free tier covers daily generations; paid plans add credits.
What is Decohere?
Decohere is a generative media studio that runs entirely in the browser, built by Decoherence, Co., a Seattle company that went through Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch. Its founders, Rishi Bhuta and Will Stith, both came from Amazon Robotics. The domain's first Wayback capture dates from 9 December 2022, and the terms and privacy policy took effect on 16 January 2023.
The whole argument of the product is latency. The site calls itself the world's fastest AI generator, and the claim shapes the interface rather than decorating it: instead of submitting a prompt and waiting for a GPU job, you watch variations arrive and stop on the one you want. The original pitch, from the company's Y Combinator launch, targeted creators who already had audio, such as music or a podcast, and wanted matching video without the costly hardware, programming knowledge and constant research upkeep that other tools demanded.
Work is metered in credits. A quality image or a template costs one credit and returns four images; a character image costs two; a four-second video costs one; a 4x upscale costs two; training a custom character costs fifty. Six building blocks sit on top: Realtime AI, the Video Generator, the Creative Upscaler, Reference Person for character consistency from a single photo, AI Stations that stream unlimited images in a chosen style, and an AI Character Generator with a catalogue of more than forty public figures. Fourteen use-case pages, covering anime, manga, Disney, Pokémon, Marvel, D&D, tattoos, wallpapers, headshots, illustration, architecture, interior design, AI art and short videos, mark out the intended territory.
The free plan is permanent: a daily allowance of real-time images, a wait between generations and a watermark. Video, upscaling, watermark removal and faster generation sit behind the paid tiers, and a commercial licence only arrives with the Creator plan — below it, output is licensed non-commercially. There is no API, no native mobile app and no third-party integration: Decohere is a self-contained web application, documented by a Notion guide and an eleven-question FAQ on the pricing page.
What it does
- Generate images from a text prompt in real time and scroll through endless variations
- Turn a generated or uploaded image into a four-second video with controllable motion
- Upscale images and videos to 4x resolution while adding new detail
- Keep the same person consistent across images from a single reference photo
- Create a style station from a reference image and receive an unlimited stream in that style
- Generate images of more than forty catalogued public figures, or train a custom AI character
- Remove the decohere.co watermark and unlock a commercial licence by upgrading
When to use Decohere / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Decohere is the right fit.
When to use Decohere
- Content creators who publish constantly and need visuals faster than a render queue allows
- Musicians and podcasters turning existing audio into music videos or matching B-roll
- Hobbyists exploring AI art around anime, manga, gaming and fan-culture themes
- Freelance designers and illustrators wanting a cheap idea-generation loop before finishing work elsewhere
- Social media and brand teams producing high volumes of short-lived visuals on a small budget
When not to use Decohere
- Developers and product teams needing an API: Decohere states it offers none, and its terms forbid automated access
- Free and Explorer subscribers who want commercial rights, which only begin at the Creator plan
- Organisations with a legal or procurement review: no GDPR statement, no DPA, no subprocessor list, no training opt-out
- Teams wanting a shared workspace, since the terms allow one user per account and one account per person
- Anyone needing a native mobile app or service-level guarantees, as the terms promise no quality, stability or uptime
How to use Decohere
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Open the site in any browser: there is nothing to install and no credit card is required to start
- Create an account, remembering that the terms allow one user per account and one account per person
- Begin in Realtime AI and type a text prompt
- Scroll through the stream of variations and refine the prompt until the style is right
- For a consistent person, upload a single reference photo and drive everything else through prompting
- For a consistent style, create an AI Station from an image you like and let the stream run
- Send a generated or uploaded image to the Video Generator and set the motion for a four-second clip
- Pass the result through the Creative Upscaler for 4x resolution, adjusting the creativity control
- Check the credits left for the period under the profile button, in Account Details
- Upgrade from the pricing page to remove the watermark, or buy refill credits, which never expire

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Decohere handles your data.
GDPR overview
There is no GDPR implementation to report. Across every page collected, the words GDPR, CCPA, SOC 2, ISO 27001 and HIPAA do not appear once. No Article 27 EU representative is designated, no data protection officer is named, no Data Processing Agreement is offered and no subprocessor list is published. The privacy policy, effective 16 January 2023 and unchanged since, acknowledges that data may be transferred to and maintained on computers outside your state, province or country, and treats acceptance of the policy as agreement to that transfer, promising only unspecified adequate controls. Deletion of personal data is available on request by emailing support@decohere.co. The terms go no further, stating that both parties will negotiate additional data protection terms in good faith if needed, which means nothing is pre-agreed.
Who owns the data?
Ownership splits by plan. The terms say you own the Assets you create, but non-paying members receive only a Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0 licence, so Free and Explorer users hold no commercial rights. A full commercial licence, without attribution, begins at the Creator plan and applies retroactively to earlier creations. In return you grant Decoherence, Co. a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, sublicensable, royalty-free and irrevocable licence over your prompts and your Assets. The company states it must obtain explicit written or electronic permission before exercising it, with two exceptions that need no permission: providing, maintaining and improving the Services or complying with law, and content you submit to public galleries.
Reuse rights
What you may do with your own output depends entirely on your plan. On the Free and Explorer tiers the licence is Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0: personal, non-commercial use with attribution, and no right to sell or monetise. From the Creator plan onward you own the images and videos outright and may use them for any commercial purpose without attribution, and upgrading extends that right retroactively to everything created earlier. Watermarks disappear from new generations only, never from media already produced. In the other direction, Decoherence, Co. may reuse prompts and Assets without asking again in two cases: to provide, maintain and improve the Services or to comply with law, and for anything you have opted to post to its public galleries or social channels.

Hosting summary
Decohere discloses no hosting country and no hosting region. The privacy policy, effective 16 January 2023, states only that information is processed at the company's operating offices and in any other places where the parties involved in the processing are located, warning that data may be transferred to and maintained on computers outside your state, province or country, where data protection laws may differ. Acceptance of the policy is treated as consent to that transfer. The company commits in general terms that no transfer will occur unless adequate controls are in place, but names no mechanism: no standard contractual clauses, no adequacy decision, no framework. No subprocessor is identified. As a technical observation rather than a vendor statement, the domain's first A record resolves to 76.76.21.21, an anycast CDN address geolocated in the United States, and the publisher is based in Seattle according to its Y Combinator listing. Neither fact establishes where generated media or account data actually rest.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Decohere.
- Anything made on the Free or Explorer plans is licensed non-commercially, so publishing or selling it breaches the terms
- Generating recognisable public figures from the built-in catalogue puts likeness and copyright risk on you, and the terms say so explicitly
- Your prompts and outputs fall under a perpetual, irrevocable licence to the company, whose service-improvement exception requires no permission
- No GDPR framework, no DPA, no named subprocessors and no training opt-out: treat anything you upload as potentially disclosable
- Payment is final, with no refunds, and unused credits vanish at the end of the billing period
- Access can be suspended or banned at any time for any reason, with no service guarantee behind it, so never build a workflow that depends on it
- The sheer speed of the tool encourages volume over judgement, and endless variations can quietly replace deciding what the image should actually say
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Very low. Decohere runs entirely in a browser, with nothing to install, no API key, no webhook and no configuration, and the feature pages state that no credit card is required to start. You need an account, and the terms allow one user per account. The only concept to absorb is the credit scale, which the pricing FAQ sets out plainly. The one slightly specific gesture is supplying a reference photo for character consistency: a single image is enough, with no training step. A Notion guide and a realtime tutorial cover the rest.

Should you pick Decohere?
Decohere is a fast, inexpensive way to produce a lot of images and short videos, and its real-time approach is a genuine difference rather than a slogan: watching variations stream past and stopping on one is not the same working method as queueing a render and waiting for it. For a creator who publishes constantly, or a musician who needs B-roll for a track, that changes the economics of the work.
The decision point is the Creator plan. Below it, on the free tier or at USD 7.99 per month, you can generate freely but own nothing commercially, since output is licensed under Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0. Anyone planning to publish, sell or attach generated media to a brand needs Creator or above, which also makes the licence retroactive over earlier work.
What you accept in exchange deserves attention. The legal framework is minimal and has not moved since January 2023: no GDPR statement, no Data Processing Agreement, no subprocessor list, no way to exclude your data from model training, and no hosting country disclosed. The terms guarantee nothing about quality, stability or uptime, allow suspension at any time for any reason, refuse refunds outright, and grant the company a perpetual licence over your prompts and outputs with a service-improvement exception that needs no permission. The catalogue of more than forty identifiable public figures is another matter to weigh, since the terms place the copyright and likeness risk squarely on the user.
Read that way, Decohere suits a specific brief well: individual creators and small teams producing high volumes of visual content at low cost, comfortable with a self-contained web app and no procurement paperwork. It is a poor fit for anyone who needs an API, a mobile app, team accounts or a compliance file.
