Polycam is a reality-capture platform published by Polycam Inc., a San Francisco computer vision company that describes itself as providing 3D scanning, drone mapping and editing tools. The premise is that a phone replaces a scanning rig: point it at a space or an object, and spatial AI returns a measurable digital reference. The site sums it up as AI reality capture for professionals: document, measure, design.
Four capture modes carry the product. Space handles rooms and interiors, and a single Space Mode session returns three aligned deliverables at once: a photorealistic model, a 3D room plan and a 2D floor plan. Object produces shareable models of individual items, including Gaussian splats. Floorplan generates customisable 2D plans before you leave the site, with automatic fixture and furniture detection. Aerial turns drone footage into large-scale models. Alongside these sit AI Capture, which builds a model from one photograph, and an AI texture generator.
What distinguishes the tool from a viewer is that measurements are embedded in the capture rather than added afterwards. Polycam quotes a 0.5 inch tolerance on standard interior captures, and floor plans are processed on the device, in minutes, with no cloud upload. From there the output moves outward: seven mesh formats, six point cloud formats, geo-referenced LAS, PDF, DXF, SVG and CSV, plus TransformEngine for BIM and custom 3D files and a dedicated Xactimate route for insurance claims.
It runs on iOS (iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision Pro), Android and the browser, with 27 interface languages on the Apple app; Space Mode is the exception, restricted to compatible iOS devices. Free browser tools cover model generation, photogrammetry, Gaussian splatting, floor plan digitising and 3D and 360 viewing, and a public community library groups scans by subject.
Four tiers run from a permanent free plan to Enterprise, with the professional feature set beginning at Business. Polycam claims two billion square feet scanned to date and use by more than half of the Fortune 500.

GDPR overview
Concrete but partial. The privacy notice, last revised on 23 September 2024, carries a dedicated European residents section listing GDPR rights for EEA and UK data subjects: access, portability, correction, erasure, restriction of processing to storage only, objection, objection to marketing, withdrawal of consent and the right to complain, with the caveat that several apply only in certain circumstances. Rights are exercised through a single address, legal@polycam.ai, and no data protection officer is named. Polycam states it is based in the United States and that data may be transferred, stored and processed there, but names no transfer mechanism such as standard contractual clauses. No DPA is published, no Article 27 representative is designated and no subprocessor list exists. The phrase GDPR compliant appears once, on the pricing page, among the items Enterprise buyers must request from sales.
Who owns the data?
Polycam Inc. states in its terms that it claims no ownership of the models or other content users create, subject to its own rights in the underlying technology and software. In exchange, users grant the company and a broad set of Licensed Parties, which includes affiliates, licensees, sublicensees, contractors, service providers, successors and assigns, a royalty-free, worldwide, transferable, sublicensable and irrevocable licence to host, store, reproduce, transmit, display, publish, distribute and modify that content, including as needed to improve and develop the Services. Content marked private is excluded from reuse by other users. Polycam may remove, screen, edit or delete any content at any time without notice, and all feedback submitted becomes its exclusive property.
Reuse rights
Users keep ownership of their own captures and can reuse them freely in client and commercial work: the terms grant a limited, non-exclusive licence to the underlying technology so that exported models may be used as permitted, and the export range is designed to feed third-party CAD, BIM and 3D software directly. Public link sharing and embedding are available on every plan, with the watermark removed on paid tiers. The restrictions sit on the input and the competitive side rather than on the output: users may not create models of people or objects in ways that infringe intellectual property or privacy rights, may not sell, share or embed API keys, and may not use the Services to build competing products or to power or train other artificial intelligence and machine-learning models. On Polycam's own side, the privacy notice says collected information is shared with vendors handling system administration, cloud storage, security, customer relationship management, marketing communications, web analytics and payment processing, and, more unusually, that user-generated content may be licensed to third parties as a legitimate interest in running and monetising the business. Neither document states whether customer data is used to train Polycam's own models.

Hosting summary
Polycam states in its privacy notice that it is based in the United States, and that information collected from users outside the country may be transferred to, stored and processed in the United States or in other countries outside the user's country of residence. No cloud provider is named: third parties appear only as categories, one of which is cloud storage. Regional cloud storage is listed on the pricing page among the items Enterprise buyers must request from sales, without naming any region. The pricing FAQ says captures are stored with industry-standard encryption, without specifying the algorithm or the location, and the privacy notice warns that no security measure is impenetrable. One notable exception to the cloud path: floor plans are computed on the device itself, with no cloud upload. The website is delivered by Fastly from an anycast node, which concerns content delivery rather than where captures are stored. The Trust Center that would document hosting in detail returns HTTP 403 to outside requests, so nothing beyond these statements can be verified.

- Scans of homes, workplaces and client premises are highly identifying spatial data, and the privacy notice contemplates licensing user-generated content to third parties to monetise the business; check what is marked private before capturing someone else's property
- The content licence in the terms is worldwide, sublicensable and irrevocable for as long as the content stays stored with Polycam, which is a long commitment for a professional archive you may later want to withdraw
- The terms describe generated models as being for entertainment purposes only and disclaim accuracy, while the product is sold for site measurement; trusting a scan instead of verifying it can be expensive on a construction or claims file
- The 0.5 inch tolerance applies to standard interior captures, so treating it as a guarantee for exteriors, complex geometry or reflective surfaces invites errors that a manual spot check would catch
- GDPR compliance, regional storage and a DPA are Enterprise sales items rather than published commitments, and the Trust Center is unreachable from outside (HTTP 403), so certifications cannot be checked independently

Polycam is one of the more industrialised tools in its category, and it shows in the details rather than the marketing. Four capture modes, seven named industry solutions, a measurement tolerance it is willing to publish, on-device floor plan processing, SOC-2 Type 1, single sign-on and an Enterprise API all point to a product that has been through real professional deployments. The USD 18 million Series A raised in February 2024, on USD 22 million total, and the claim that more than half of the Fortune 500 use it, are consistent with that.
The economics are legible. A permanent free plan and a set of free browser tools let anyone test the technology; Basic at USD 150 a year suits freelancers and creators; but everything a professional actually bills for, meaning floor plans, advanced measurement, point cloud exports and AI reports, begins at Business, at USD 300 to 400 per user per year. There is no one-time licence and no prorated refund on an annual plan.
Two reservations deserve weighing before a rollout. The first is technical: Space Mode, the flagship space-scanning workflow, is confined to compatible iOS devices, which effectively decides what phones a field team carries. The second is contractual.
