Overview

What is VideoDB?

VideoDB is a video backend built for software rather than for viewers. Published by Spext Labs Inc. under the VideoDB brand, it starts from the observation that the existing video stack, made of object storage, ffmpeg transcoding, HLS delivery, DRM and players, was designed so that people could watch, and that teams adding AI end up bolting transcription, vision models, embeddings, vector databases and custom orchestration onto it. VideoDB replaces that assembly with one system exposing six primitives: ingest, index, remember, retrieve, edit and stream.

The loop is the product. Any source enters, whether video files, YouTube URLs, live RTSP camera feeds, meetings, screen captures or datasets. Indexing runs over speech, scenes, people, objects, actions and events, each anchored in time. That understanding accumulates into persistent memory the application can query, instead of being recomputed on every request. Retrieval takes a plain-language question and returns the exact moments as playable clips. From there the platform acts: events and webhooks fire, agents are triggered, and new clips, captions, overlays or streams are generated by code.

The API surface is deliberately small, four concepts named Media, Indexes, Memory and Events, reached through Python and JavaScript SDKs, a REST API and an MCP server. The platform is model-agnostic: customers bring their own vision models and run them on every frame of a live feed. RTSP Connect, now generally available, handles live ingestion with rolling-window understanding and indexes that stay queryable while a stream is still running.

Four solution areas are documented: agentic perception, live camera intelligence, programmable media and training video data. Claimed figures include retrieval in roughly 120 ms across petabyte archives, 2.4 million hours indexed, 240 ms p95 query latency and 99.97% uptime over ninety days. Deployment comes in two tiers: a fully managed cloud with multi-region availability across the United States, the European Union and India, or a single-tenant deployment inside the customer's own AWS, GCP or Azure account, with on-premise on request and an optional edge GPU, using the same SDK and no code changes.

GDPR overview

GDPR compliance is claimed explicitly and backed by documents. The terms list the GDPR alongside HIPAA, ISO 27001 and SOC 2, and the trust centre offers a GDPR audit report issued in November 2025 by Intercert, shared under NDA on request. A Data Protection Addendum is published, built on the EU GDPR and incorporating the 2021/914 Standard Contractual Clauses, with a named list of subprocessors and their processing locations. Who owns the data?

Spext Labs Inc., operating under the VideoDB brand, is the data controller for its own site and account data, and acts as processor for the content customers upload under its published Data Protection Addendum. The terms state that uploaded content is confidential and proprietary to the customer. Access is restricted to authorised personnel, and employees are not authorised to view uploaded files during upload or transcription. Customers keep access to their files even after a subscription ends, since viewing, export and download remain available, and they can delete audio, video and transcripts at any time. Under the bring-your-own-cloud tier, originals never leave the customer's own storage.

Reuse rights

Customers keep the right to reuse their own material freely: nothing in the terms transfers ownership to VideoDB, and the outputs, whether clips, transcripts, indexes or streams, are derived from content the customer supplied.
