Olypsys
Olypsys measures and identifies industrial O-rings from a smartphone photo. Machine learning corrects shadows, perspective, ovality and wear, matches parts against AS568 standards, and stores every result in a web portal with PDF and Excel reporting.
What is Olypsys?
Olypsys is an industrial measurement system that turns an ordinary smartphone into a dimensional gauge for flexible sealing components. It is published by Olypsys Technologies Ltd, a British company based in Worlaby, North Lincolnshire, which describes itself as building products that transform how industrial components are identified, measured, recorded and replaced, and says it has been developing this technology since 2017. The principle is deliberately simple. You place a seal on a calibrated reference grid, open the mobile app and tap Measure; a machine learning engine returns the result in under ten seconds. What lifts this above photography is the correction layer. Models trained on thousands of real O-rings compensate for shadows, reflections, perspective distortion, misalignment and out-of-roundness, and the software fits precise ellipses to the inner and outer edges instead of assuming perfect circles. A dedicated wear compensation tool ignores nicks, flash and compression set to report the true underlying dimensions of a used part, which is exactly the case that defeats conventional vision systems. Results are matched automatically against AS568 and other international standards and returned as an instant pass or fail. The product is a stack rather than a single app. Free printable grids and pre-calibrated professional grids cover outside diameters up to 280 mm, custom grids reach 1.5 m, and backlit Pro Vision booths add controlled lighting with accuracy quoted at up to 0.02 mm. Behind them sits the Vault, a web portal at app.olypsys.com where measurements can be searched by part number, customer, date or operator, annotated, corrected in a versioned 2D sketch editor over the original photograph, viewed in 3D, and exported to PDF, Excel, DXF, SVG or .o2d. Every record carries a timestamp, operator, device and software version. Beyond O-rings the site also covers circlips, gaskets, backup rings, X-rings, washers and square-section rings. The app and the Vault run in ten languages, and users are reported to have measured more than 100,000 O-rings. Olypsys also sells training and consultancy, and distributes hardware in the United States through The O-Ring Store.
What it does
- Measure an O-ring from a single smartphone photograph in under ten seconds
- Identify a part against AS568 and other international standards, returning inner diameter, outer diameter and cross-section
- Measure worn or damaged seals using the dedicated wear compensation tool
- Save every measurement to a central cloud database with full traceability
- Generate branded PDF reports and Excel exports for audits and customers
- Export a measured outline to DXF, SVG or .o2d for CAD software or a cutting table
- Operate a booth-mounted phone remotely from a desktop computer
When to use Olypsys / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Olypsys is the right fit.
When to use Olypsys
- Seal distributors who need to identify a customer's O-ring at the counter and sell the right replacement
- Quality inspectors and QC managers who need dimensional checks with timestamped, audit-ready traceability
- Maintenance and reliability teams measuring worn or damaged seals during repair and failure analysis
- Machine shops and workshops with no metrology equipment and no trained metrologist
- High-volume operations that can justify a backlit Pro Vision booth and remote operation from a desk
When not to use Olypsys
- Teams needing programmatic integration: Olypsys publishes no API and no developer documentation
- Safety-critical and regulated environments, which the terms of use explicitly forbid, including power generation, aviation, medical, military, transport and emergency services
- Organisations with strict data governance requirements: no processing agreement, no subprocessor list and no disclosed hosting location
- High-precision metrology of rigid machined metal parts, where traditional vision systems remain better suited
- Occasional users unwilling to buy a grid: the free printable grid stops at 30 measurements and needs manual calibration
How to use Olypsys
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Choose a grid: download the free printable PDF in US Letter or A4 format, or order a pre-calibrated professional grid
- If you printed the free grid, calibrate it by measuring several squares along the x and y axes; a professional grid only needs its QR code scanned
- Install the Olypsys app from the App Store or Google Play
- Create an account with an email address and a password
- Place the seal flat on the grid under diffuse lighting, hold the camera perpendicular to the grid and centre the part in the frame
- Open the app and tap Measure
- Review the detected inner and outer edges before accepting the result
- Read the instant pass or fail verdict against standard sizes, then save the measurement
- Open app.olypsys.com to search, annotate, correct in the sketch editor or export your measurement history
- For high volumes, mount the phone in a Pro Vision booth and drive the app remotely from your computer
Pros & Cons
Pros
- A fraction of the cost of industrial vision systems: booths start at USD 3,000 against the USD 50,000 to 100,000 the site quotes for traditional equipment
- A genuinely permanent free plan, and no hardware purchase needed to start measuring
- Built from the ground up for flexible seals rather than rigid machined parts
- Handles worn and damaged components, which is the everyday reality in maintenance work
- Results in under ten seconds, with no metrology training required
- Serious traceability and export options, including CAD-ready outlines and audit-ready PDF reports
- Interface in ten languages, with applications actually published on both mobile stores
Cons
- No API and no developer documentation, so no programmatic integration into an ERP, MES or quality system
- The terms of use claim a perpetual, royalty-free licence over supplied data, including the right to monetise it in aggregate
- Measurement data feeds product improvement with no documented way to opt out
- No data processing agreement, no subprocessor list and no disclosed hosting country or region
- Governing law is the State of Idaho with American Arbitration Association arbitration, for a British company, and total liability is capped at USD 50
- The free grid is limited to 30 measurements and its accuracy depends on your office printer
- Thin public evidence: the case studies page is empty and the footer's social links lead nowhere

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Olypsys handles your data.
GDPR overview
Olypsys addresses the GDPR substantively but never claims compliance in so many words, which is why compliance is recorded as No: that marks the absence of an explicit claim, not a declaration of non-compliance. The privacy policy, last revised on 14 September 2023, sets out legal bases for processing, lists five data subject rights covering access, rectification or erasure, objection, restriction and portability, and confirms the right to complain to a supervisory authority. A separate section covers the California CCPA. Transfers outside the European Economic Area are said to rely on standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission. What is missing is equally clear: no data processing agreement, no subprocessor list, no disclosed hosting country, no data protection officer, and no Article 27 EU representative even though the publisher is established in the United Kingdom.
Who owns the data?
The terms of use are the decisive document here. By using the application you grant Olypsys Technologies Ltd a perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to copy, modify and use any data you supply or that is collected on your behalf, expressly including the right to repurpose and monetise aggregate data and to share or sell analytical trend data to third parties. Olypsys undertakes that no information will be disclosed in a way that identifies particular customers or individuals, and its privacy policy states that it does not sell personal data and is not a data broker. Your customer's name may nonetheless appear in lists of participating organisations attached to trend reports.
Reuse rights
Nothing published restricts what you may do with your own results: measurements can be browsed, annotated, corrected and exported freely to PDF, Excel, DXF, SVG or the proprietary .o2d format, and sent on to a supplier, a cutting table or your own CAD package. Olypsys grants the customer no explicit reuse licence, but states no restriction either. The vendor's own rights run much wider. Measurement data may be used to develop the accuracy and efficiency of its products and to predict your future requirements, and email addresses together with measurement summaries may be transferred to partnered vendors and distributors so they can assess campaigns and conduct further marketing. No mechanism to exclude your data from that reuse is documented anywhere.
Data retention & training
Hosting summary
Olypsys discloses nothing about where measurement data is physically stored. No hosting country, region or cloud provider is named anywhere on the site, and there is no security or trust page. Measurements are described only as saved into a central database, viewable in the app and through the web portal at app.olypsys.com, with unlimited cloud storage on the Pro subscription. The publisher is established in the United Kingdom. The privacy policy acknowledges that information processed for users in the European Union may be used, stored and accessed by people operating outside the European Economic Area, and states that such transfers rely on standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission. Third-party vendors named in the policy include Stripe, Chargebee and PayPal for payments, alongside unnamed cloud storage providers. The domain resolves through Cloudflare on an anycast address, which identifies the content delivery network and says nothing about where data actually resides. Anyone with a data residency requirement will have to ask the vendor directly.

Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Olypsys.
- The terms of use grant Olypsys a perpetual, royalty-free licence over the data you supply, with an explicit right to repurpose and monetise it in aggregate and to sell analytical trend data to third parties
- Your measurements are used to improve the vendor's products with no documented opt-out, and email addresses together with measurement summaries may be passed to partnered vendors and distributors
- Data governance is undocumented: no processing agreement, no subprocessor list, no hosting country or region, and no Article 27 EU representative despite a UK-based publisher
- Retention has no stated limit; the privacy policy reserves the right to keep important measurements indefinitely, and closing your account does not guarantee deletion
- Legal exposure is asymmetric: Idaho governing law and American Arbitration Association arbitration for a British company, a waiver of jury trial and class actions, and total liability capped at USD 50
- Automated measurement invites over-trust; the terms disclaim any warranty of accuracy and forbid safety-critical use, so a pass or fail verdict should not replace human judgement on parts that matter
- Documentary inconsistencies deserve attention: a United States only geographic clause contradicted by the rest of the site, two different US phone numbers, an empty case studies page, dead social links, and a privacy policy adapted from another company's template that still mentions services Olypsys does not provide
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Very low on the standard route. Print a free PDF grid, install the app from either mobile store, create an account with an email address and a password, and start measuring. The only technical step is calibrating a printed grid by measuring several squares, which a pre-calibrated professional grid removes entirely. Olypsys advertises a zero learning curve and requires no metrology expertise or dedicated hardware. A Pro Vision booth raises the effort considerably: physical installation, a mounted phone paired with a computer for remote control, and lead times of around six weeks on the larger models.

Should you pick Olypsys?
Olypsys does one thing with unusual clarity: it turns a phone and a printed grid into a working gauge for flexible sealing components, in a field where the alternative has traditionally cost tens of thousands. The product is genuinely shown rather than merely announced. Measurement ranges and tolerances are quantified, hardware carries part numbers and stock levels, both mobile apps are published, and the Vault is a real portal with versioned corrections and CAD-ready exports. For a distributor identifying a seal at the counter, a maintenance team measuring a worn part, or a quality function that needs timestamped records, the economics are hard to argue with. The reservations are documentary rather than technical. There is no API, so Olypsys will not slot programmatically into an ERP or quality system. Data governance is thin: no processing agreement, no subprocessor list, no stated hosting location, and terms that claim a perpetual licence over supplied data with an explicit right to monetise it in aggregate, while measurement data feeds product improvement with no documented opt-out. Several documents also contradict each other or the site itself. A clause restricting use to persons located in the United States sits alongside a British publisher, ten interface languages and worldwide ordering; the governing law is Idaho; the case studies page is empty; and the footer's social links lead to platform home pages rather than company profiles. None of this makes the tool less capable, but the paperwork clearly lags the product. Anyone evaluating Olypsys for regulated or contractual use should ask directly about hosting, retention and a data processing agreement before committing, and should settle the geographic clause with the vendor rather than assume it is inoperative.
