What is Semablu?

Semablu is an AI-for-Space technology startup based in Malta. It trades as Semablu Ltd, a Maltese private limited liability company registered with the Malta Business Registry under number C105506, and takes its name from the Maltese words sema and blu, meaning blue sky, a nod both to blue-sky research and to an interest in space.

The company sells two things. The first is a self-serve super-resolution platform: deep-learning models applied to Copernicus Sentinel-2 MSI Level-2A optical data to raise spatial resolution from the sensor's native 10 m to 2.5 m. The delivered product is specified as analytics-grade orthorectified surface reflectance, RGB plus NIR, supplied as GeoTIFF, with coverage equivalent to Sentinel-2 availability. The homepage carries an interactive before-and-after slider, so the effect can be judged before any purchase. Delivery runs through a web console at console.semablu.com, and the Terms also reference a Semablu API alongside it.

The second product line is custom AI models built to order for Earth observation monitoring, advertised in three families: land cover mapping for policy development, urban planning and forest or agricultural monitoring; change detection over urban and rural areas from repeat satellite passes; and object detection for buildings, vessels, airplanes and photovoltaic panels.

Behind both sits a real research lineage. Semablu names four funded R&D projects: PI-EOS, SEMS-2D, PosidoniaMapper and MALTESE. PI-EOS is funded by Xjenza Malta on behalf of the Foundation for Science and Technology through the FUSION R&I Research Excellence Programme; MALTESE is financed from PoliRuralPlus under EU Horizon Europe grant agreement No 101136910. An Our Partners band shows the wider Earth observation ecosystem the company works in, with ESA, CNR-IRPI, Geofem and KP Labs, which are partners of the company rather than integrations of the product. The Terms are unusually explicit about what the technology is: super-resolution is a generative and inferential process, and every output is a model prediction rather than a direct sensor measurement.

GDPR overview

There is no GDPR implementation to report, because there is no GDPR documentation at all. The words GDPR and General Data Protection Regulation appear nowhere in the archived corpus of thirteen pages, in text or in HTML. No data protection officer, no data processing agreement, no subprocessor list and no data protection contact address are published. The privacy policy is linked from the console login and registration screens, but every request to it returns an HTTP 307 redirect to the login page, so a prospect cannot read it. This is an absence of documentation, not an absence of obligation: Semablu Ltd is a Maltese company and therefore falls within EU data protection law whatever the site says. Who owns the data?

The Terms draw a clear line. The Semablu platform, its AI models and the associated software remain the intellectual property of Semablu, and a customer may not claim ownership of the models or of the processing pipeline. The source imagery comes from Copernicus Sentinel-2, operated by ESA, so the delivered products stay subject to the Copernicus Sentinel Data Terms and Conditions and the customer is responsible for downstream compliance with that licence. The customer does retain the right to use the processed imagery for their own purposes under the Terms. Reuse rights

Retention summary

Neither the Terms nor any other readable page states how long imagery, account data or logs are kept, whether anything is anonymised, or how deletion is requested or performed. The document that would normally carry those rules, the privacy policy, is linked from the console but redirects to the login page and could not be read, and a targeted search across the whole archived corpus found no retention clause of any kind.
