Aftercare
Aftercare is an AI survey tool for market researchers. It asks real-time conversational follow-ups to open-ended answers, scores every response for quality and fraud, and automatically codes results, available as a complete platform or as an API.
What is Aftercare?
Aftercare is an AI layer for surveys, built for market researchers who collect open-ended answers and then struggle to probe them and process them at scale. It is published by Kontractify Inc., trading as Aftercare, a small technology company based in Brooklyn, New York, which went through Y Combinator's Winter 2024 batch and whose site was first archived in June 2024. The promise on the home page is blunt: supercharge your surveys with AI.
The product comes through two doors. The first is a complete survey platform, run from a dashboard at surveys.getaftercare.com, where you assemble a questionnaire in a drag-and-drop flow builder with branching logic, publish it, and watch responses arrive already categorised and summarised. The second is a suite of APIs that graft onto a survey you already run elsewhere. As the documentation puts it, Separate from the end-to-end Aftercare Survey Platform, Aftercare API is a suite of AI tools to augment your existing surveys. Five products sit under that banner: the Enhanced AI Follow-up API, a faster and cheaper Follow-up API Lite, the AI Data Quality API, AI Coding and the AI Survey Platform, joined by an AI Survey Generator and an AI Form Generator that turn a plain-language brief into a questionnaire.
The signature capability is the adaptive follow-up. When a respondent gives a thin or ambiguous answer, Aftercare writes the next question from what was actually said, and keeps going until a chosen completeness threshold is met or a fixed cap of follow-ups is reached. Every answer is scored from 0 to 100 on four axes, completeness, relevance, consistency and nonsense, and those scores are what you steer the conversation with.
Around that sits an unusually thorough quality apparatus: detection of off-topic, low-effort and nonsensical answers, of duplicates across different respondents and of text that looks LLM-generated, plus keystroke analysis and invisible honeypot questions to catch bots. AI Coding then builds a code frame and classifies responses thematically, from an API feed or an uploaded Excel file. Aftercare supports 22 languages, integrates with Qualtrics, Forsta (Decipher) and Alchemer, publishes eleven ready-made templates and has passed a SOC 2 Type 1 audit. Data is hosted in the United States, and processing combines third-party models from Anthropic and OpenAI with proprietary algorithms.
What it does
- Ask AI follow-up questions in real time, written from what each respondent actually answered
- Score every response from 0 to 100 on completeness, relevance, consistency and nonsense, and drive the follow-ups from those scores
- Flag off-topic, low-effort, nonsensical, duplicated or LLM-generated answers, and disqualify inconsistent respondents on the spot
- Catch bots through keystroke analysis and invisible honeypot questions
- Generate a code frame and classify open-ended responses automatically
- Build a questionnaire with drag-and-drop branching logic, or generate one from a plain-language brief
- Plug all of it into Qualtrics, Forsta or Alchemer through the API, without leaving your current survey tool
When to use Aftercare / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Aftercare is the right fit.
When to use Aftercare
- Market research agencies and insights teams processing large volumes of open-ended responses
- Teams already running Qualtrics, Forsta or Alchemer who want to add AI follow-ups without changing platform
- Panel managers who need to catch fraudulent respondents and bots in paid samples
- Product and UX teams running qualitative user research at scale
- HR and people teams handling engagement, exit interview and training surveys, for which templates are provided
When not to use Aftercare
- Organisations handling interactions subject to HIPAA, FISMA or GLBA, which the Terms of Service explicitly exclude
- Anyone under 18, who is barred from the service by the Terms of Service
- Buyers who need a published price list before speaking to sales, since no pricing grid remains online
- Brands wanting heavily customised survey design, an area the vendor's own comparison page concedes to Typeform
- Teams that require data residency outside the United States or a native mobile app, as neither is offered
How to use Aftercare
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Decide which route fits you: the hosted survey platform, or the API bolted onto the survey tool you already use
- For the platform route, create an account at auth.getaftercare.com and open the dashboard at surveys.getaftercare.com
- Build your questionnaire in the drag-and-drop flow builder, adding branching logic where you need it
- Or describe your objective in plain language to the AI Survey Generator and let it draft the questionnaire for you
- Set how far the AI should probe, either with a completeness threshold or with a fixed maximum number of follow-ups
- Publish the survey and monitor responses as they are scored, categorised and summarised
- For the API route, read the introduction and the API Reference at docs.getaftercare.com
- Pick one of the three documented integration patterns: a single follow-up, multiple follow-ups, or the Data Quality API
- Follow the dedicated integration guide for your platform, Qualtrics, Forsta or Alchemer, which comes with code samples
- Book the free white-glove onboarding call with the implementation team, and use the public Discord and Slack for support
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Adaptive follow-ups capture depth that a fixed questionnaire never reaches
- The four 0-100 scores make follow-up behaviour a parameter you set rather than a black box you accept
- An anti-fraud arsenal that is unusual for a survey tool: keystroke analysis, honeypots, cross-respondent duplicates and LLM detection
- No need to leave Qualtrics, Forsta or Alchemer, since the API grafts onto the tool you already run
- Automatic coding of open-ended answers removes the most time-consuming task in survey research
- A genuine free plan at 30 responses per month, three times what the vendor's comparison pages credit to SurveyMonkey and Typeform, and support for 22 languages
- Notable transparency for a young vendor: SOC 2 Type 1 audit passed, eight subprocessors named, DPA built into the Terms, training opt-out available, full public documentation and free white-glove onboarding
Cons
- No public pricing at all: the pricing page has been reduced to an invitation to contact the team, and no Aftercare amount appears anywhere on the site
- The security audit is SOC 2 Type 1 only, not Type 2
- Hosting is exclusively in the United States, with no data residency option
- Training on anonymised survey data is on by default, and opting out means emailing the data protection officer rather than changing a setting in the product
- IntelliSurvey and Voxco appear as logos on the home page but are marked as coming soon in the documentation, and one privacy policy link points to a shared Google Doc instead of the site's own page
- No about page, no contact page and no mobile app: contact runs through a support mailbox and personal Calendly links
- A three-person company founded in 2024, whose meta descriptions still advertise Pro, Team and Enterprise plans the pricing page no longer displays
Pricing & Plans
Aftercare operates on a freemium basis. A permanent free plan is documented at 30 responses per month, and the first paid tier is described as covering 500 responses per year. Beyond that, no price point is published: the pricing page has been reduced to the invitation "Contact us for a plan customized for you" together with a booking link, and no amount for Aftercare appears on any page of the site. Paid plans are therefore quoted after a call, are built on response volume for the API offer, are settled in United States dollars through Stripe, and are presented as flexible month-to-month billing with no mandatory annual commitment, cancellation taking effect at the end of the paid period. A free API trial with white-glove onboarding is available on request.

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Aftercare handles your data.
GDPR overview
Aftercare's privacy policy, effective 21 March 2025, sets out a concrete GDPR framework. An internal data protection officer is appointed and reachable at anand@getaftercare.com, though no Article 27 EU representative is designated. The policy acknowledges that the United States has neither sought nor received an adequacy finding, and relies on Article 46 safeguards through binding standard data protection clauses enforceable by data subjects in the EEA and the UK. A full data processing agreement sits in section 22 of the Terms of Service, using SCC module two, controller to processor, with general subprocessor authorisation and 30 days' notice of any change. The eight data subject rights are listed explicitly, access is free of charge, and complaints may be brought before the European supervisory body or a national data protection authority. Aftercare also states that it has received no government data request since inception.
Who owns the data?
Under the data processing agreement embedded in section 22 of the Terms of Service, the customer remains the data controller and Aftercare acts only as data processor. Survey content and responses therefore belong to the customer, and Aftercare states that it processes personal data solely on behalf of the customer and under the customer's documented instructions. Respondents who wish to exercise their rights are directed to the organisation that published the survey, not to Aftercare. Internally, access to response data is restricted to Aftercare super-administrators, is logged, and is limited to five stated grounds: troubleshooting, database maintenance, data integrity, security incidents and legal obligations.
Reuse rights
Because the customer is the data controller and Aftercare only a processor acting on documented instructions, the customer's own survey data stays theirs to export, analyse and reuse without asking Aftercare's permission, and customers can request the export or deletion of individual responses or of entire datasets. In the other direction, Aftercare states that it may use anonymised and aggregated survey data to train its internal AI models and improve its services; customers can opt out of that use by writing to the data protection officer at anand@getaftercare.com. Responses are also processed by third-party large language models from Anthropic or OpenAI, which Aftercare says do not train on API data. Personal information collected through the website, such as name, email address and phone number, is never sold and is shared only with service providers; eight subprocessors are named, namely AWS, Supabase, GitHub, PropelAuth, Stripe, Intercom, PostHog and HyperDX. Technical data including IP address, region, browser, operating system and page history is collected automatically.

Hosting summary
Aftercare states that the personal information it collects is stored in one or more databases hosted by third parties located in the United States. The infrastructure runs on AWS with Supabase as the database layer, alongside six other named subprocessors: GitHub, PropelAuth, Stripe, Intercom, PostHog and HyperDX. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest with industry-standard encryption, and access is restricted to Aftercare super-administrators, logged, and limited to five stated grounds: troubleshooting, database maintenance, data integrity, security incidents and legal obligations. Because the United States holds no adequacy decision, transfers from the EEA and the UK are covered by standard contractual clauses under Article 46 of the GDPR, with SCC module two, controller to processor, set out in the data processing agreement in section 22 of the Terms of Service, and customers receive 30 days' notice of any change of subprocessor. No data residency option outside the United States is offered, and no broader hosting region is named. Aftercare has passed a SOC 2 Type 1 audit.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Aftercare.
- No price is published anywhere on the site, so you cannot budget or compare without booking a sales call, an asymmetry that works in the vendor's favour at the negotiating table
- Training on anonymised, aggregated survey data is switched on by default, and opting out means emailing the data protection officer rather than changing a setting, so teams that never read the privacy policy will simply never opt out
- The audit is SOC 2 Type 1, which attests to controls at a point in time, not SOC 2 Type 2, which attests to their operation over a period
- All data is processed in the United States with no residency option, and while the Terms name no unavailable country they leave local legal compliance entirely to the user, which may be unworkable for European or public sector research programmes
- IntelliSurvey and Voxco are shown as logos on the home page while the documentation marks them as coming soon, and one privacy policy link points to a shared Google Doc rather than the site's own page: small signals worth checking before you rely on a claim
- Use is contractually excluded for interactions subject to HIPAA, FISMA or GLBA, which puts sensitive health, federal and financial research out of scope
- Letting an AI decide when a respondent has said enough, and letting it code the answers, quietly moves editorial judgement out of the researcher's hands; the scores are only as good as the thresholds a human sets, and a three-person company founded in 2024 carries a genuine continuity risk for a long deployment
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Difficulty depends entirely on the route you take. The hosted platform is straightforward: sign-up is self-service and the questionnaire is assembled in a drag-and-drop flow builder, so no technical skill is required, and AI Coding can even be used by uploading an Excel file with no code at all. The API route is another matter, since it needs an API key, a read of the API Reference and integration work inside your existing survey platform, so a developer is required. Per-platform integration guides with code samples and a free white-glove onboarding session are offered to lower that barrier.

Should you pick Aftercare?
Aftercare is a narrow tool that does one thing unusually well: it makes open-ended survey answers deeper and more trustworthy. The adaptive follow-up is the heart of it, since the AI reads what a respondent actually wrote and asks the next question accordingly, up to a completeness threshold you set, and the four 0-100 quality scores turn what could easily have been a black box into something a researcher can tune.
What sets it apart from the rest of the survey market is the anti-fraud work. Keystroke analysis, invisible honeypot questions, duplicate detection across different respondents and detection of LLM-written text add up to an arsenal you rarely see bundled with a survey product, and it matters a great deal to anyone running paid panels.
The two-door design is the other unusual choice. You can adopt the full platform, or leave your questionnaires where they are in Qualtrics, Forsta or Alchemer and simply call the API. Few vendors in this space are willing to let you keep your existing stack.
The reservations are real and worth weighing. No price is published anywhere, so budgeting means booking a call first. The security audit is SOC 2 Type 1, not Type 2. Everything is processed in the United States with no residency option, and training on anonymised data is on by default with an opt-out you have to request by email. The publisher is a three-person company founded in 2024, a legitimate consideration for any multi-year deployment.
The good news is that none of this has to be taken on trust: the free plan at 30 responses per month is genuine, and it is enough to judge whether the follow-ups and the quality scoring earn their place in your research before any commitment is made.
