Avlex is a Belgian AI litigation assistant for lawyers, notaries and in-house counsel. It runs forensic document analysis, flags procedural nullities across 22 fields of Belgian law, and verifies case law through ECLI and Juportal.
What is Avlex?
Avlex is an AI litigation workspace built for legal practice in Belgium, and only in Belgium. It is published by Avlex Belgium SRL, a Brussels company registered on 7 April 2026 under enterprise and VAT number BE 1036.582.778.
The product opens on two working modes. One answers a single question and returns referenced sources; the other takes a whole case file and analyses it at either a fast or a deep level. Behind both sits a catalogue of 24 specialised intelligence modules, among them Forensic Auditor, Timeline Guard, Language Law Trap, Defense Shield and Hostile Judge Simulation, together with a structured knowledge base the publisher describes as 22 areas of Belgian law, 442 procedural traps (239 critical, 203 high), 25 vulnerabilities and 775 legal references.
Two mechanisms are specific to the Belgian setting. Smart Geo works out which jurisdiction applies, between Brussels, Flanders, Wallonia and the German-speaking Community, before the analysis starts. Twenty calculators implement named Belgian methods rather than generic formulas: Article 1022 of the Judicial Code, the Renard method, the Claeys formula, the indicative table, Schryvers, Ruysseveldt and the additional decimes. A check called Forensic Guardian screens the output through seven verification layers, one of which looks for AI hallucination.
On intake, Avlex reads more than twenty file formats, including PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, images, EML, driver cards and tachograph files. A live legal adviser is available in voice or chat mode, with screen sharing and automatic language detection across French, Dutch, German and English.
The data architecture is local-first: case data sits in the browser's IndexedDB, with an optional save to a folder on the user's own disk. The AI engine runs on Google Vertex AI in the europe-west1 region, while the application platform is hosted by OVHcloud in Roubaix.
Commercially, Avlex leans on a recurring tax argument: for Belgian self-employed professionals and companies, the subscription is presented as a business expense deductible up to 100%. The publisher states plainly that it is not a law firm and that every output has to be validated by a qualified professional before it is used.

The lowest paid price point is 39.00 EUR per month excluding VAT, or 32.50 EUR per month on annual billing, under the Forfait Étudiant; that rate is restricted to students enrolled in a law programme recognised in Belgium or in another EU member state, on annual proof of enrolment. The lowest unrestricted professional entry point is therefore the Plan Performance Juridique, at 299 EUR per month excluding VAT per user, or 2,989.99 EUR per year, that is 249.17 EUR per month. GDPR overview
GDPR implementation is documented concretely rather than merely claimed. Avlex cites Regulation (EU) 2016/679, the Belgian Act of 30 July 2018 and the ePrivacy rules transposed in Article 129 of the Act of 13 June 2005. An Article 28 data processing agreement is published on the site. Seven subprocessors are named, each with its role, its location and a no-training commitment. Transfers outside the EU, for Stripe, Google Analytics, Meta and LinkedIn, rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses and are stated not to involve legal case data. No solely automated decision-making takes place under Article 22. Access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection rights are answered within one month. Lawyer-client privilege under Article 458 of the Belgian Criminal Code is invoked explicitly. Being EU-established, the publisher needs no Article 27 representative. AI Act governance adds 14 mechanisms of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689.
Who owns the data?
Avlex Belgium SRL, Boulevard de l'Empereur 10, 1000 Brussels, enterprise and VAT number BE 1036.582.778, is the data controller, reachable on privacy matters at legal@avlex.be. Ownership is split by design. Case files created in the workspace stay with the subscriber: they sit in the browser's IndexedDB on the subscriber's own device, with an optional save to a folder the user picks through the File System Access API. Documents submitted for analysis remain the subscriber's property and are deleted once processed. Article 4.1 of the terms adds a contractual no-training clause covering incoming content. The supervisory authority is the Belgian Data Protection Authority, Rue de la Presse 35, 1000 Brussels.
Reuse rights
The stated default is a zero-storage architecture: exhibits are encrypted, transmitted for processing, then deleted. AI processing is subcontracted to Google Cloud EMEA Limited on Vertex AI in the europe-west1 region, inside the EU; that subprocessor keeps technical security logs for 30 days at most, for abuse prevention only. If the subscriber deliberately switches on the save option, documents sit on OVHcloud EU infrastructure for a maximum of five days before automatic deletion. The legal bases cited are performance of the contract under Article 6.1.b and, for the health or criminal data a case file may contain, Article 9.2.f. Google Workspace Limited Use applies to the Google Sign-In and Google Calendar synchronisation scopes only. No data is sold to third parties, and the privacy policy gives a formal guarantee that a subscriber's confidential legal data is never used to train, improve or fine-tune artificial intelligence models, either by Avlex Belgium or by its subprocessors. Because deletion is the default, subscribers who want to keep and reuse their own material do so themselves: the case file lives on their device rather than on Avlex's servers.

Hosting summary
Hosting is split by data category. Client data and confidential case documents sit exclusively with OVHcloud SAS in Roubaix, France, inside the EU; OVHcloud's data centres are ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018 certified, a certification held by the host rather than by Avlex. AI processing runs with Google Cloud EMEA Limited on Vertex AI in the europe-west1 region, also in the EU. Working case files never reach a server at all: they live in the browser's IndexedDB on the user's own device. The public site avlex.be is hosted separately by Hostinger International Ltd in Larnaca, Cyprus, and carries no legal data. Payments go through Stripe Payments Europe Ltd in Ireland, with US transfers covered by standard contractual clauses, and involve billing data only. Analytics and advertising rely on Google LLC, Meta Platforms Ireland and LinkedIn Ireland under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses. Encryption is TLS 1.2 or 1.3 in transit and AES-256 at rest.

- The headline counters on the homepage, for cases analysed, accuracy percentage and hours saved, render at zero in the HTML. They are JavaScript animations rather than verifiable figures, and should carry no weight in a purchase decision
- The legal notice stacks two successive versions, dated March 2026 and 29 May 2026, that contradict each other on who the service is for: strictly B2B in one, open to consumers in the other. Which regime applies to a given subscriber is therefore unclear
- The homepage FAQ speaks of a free plan while the pricing page and llms.txt both describe a one-month trial. The trial ends, and the budget has to account for that
- Delegating procedural vigilance is the real risk of a tool like this. Deadline calculations, nullity detection and case law citations still have to be checked by the practitioner, who remains solely liable; the publisher is not a law firm and says so itself
- Leaning on generated submissions and memos day after day can erode a junior lawyer's own reasoning and research reflexes, since the skills the tool automates are precisely the ones a practitioner is expected to master

Setup is minimal. Avlex is a web application reached at av.avlex.be: nothing to install, no connector to configure and no API key to obtain. You sign up online, start the one-month trial without a payment card, and drag your exhibits into the interface; no technical configuration is documented anywhere. Two options call for a deliberate action rather than any skill: local saving, which the user switches on through the File System Access API and which needs a compatible browser, and Google Calendar synchronisation. The real effort lies in learning the legal workflow, not in the technical setup.
