Overview

What is Enago?

Enago is the author-services brand of Crimson Interactive, serving academic authors since 2005. It is a human editorial service rather than a self-service AI product: manuscripts are handled by more than 3,000 editors holding a Master's degree or a PhD, with 19.4 years of average experience, across 1,600+ subject areas. Matching is deliberately narrow, and Enago puts it plainly: if your paper is in neurosurgery, it will be assigned to a neurosurgery expert, not a general medicine or surgery expert. Editors are grouped into five families (Medicine, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering, Business and Economics, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) and many hold BELS or CSE certification. The company claims two million authors served in over 125 countries.

Three editing levels are offered. Copy Editing puts two editors on language, style and technical accuracy. Substantive Editing adds logical flow, content enrichment and 365 days of revision support. Top Impact Scientific Editing uses three editors and adds developmental scientific editing and a simulated peer review report. Around them sit proofreading, thesis editing, academic translation (English into 50+ languages, MTPE, technical localization) and Research Impact deliverables such as video and graphical abstracts, scientific illustrations, cover art and posters. Two submission bundles, the Easy-Go Package and the Full Support Pack, run from journal selection through to submission.

AI sits beside the human service rather than replacing it. An Enago One account opens the in-house suite: Trinka for grammar and writing checks, consistency, Word and LaTeX support, plagiarism, paraphrasing, AI content detection, AI Studio and citation tools, and Read, a literature review assistant with real-time Q&A over 200 million+ papers. Confidentiality is handled by Enago Lock, which converts a .docx into a proprietary .enago file with named, time-limited access, action tracing and deletion after delivery.

The operation is certified to ISO/IEC 27001:2022, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 17100:2015 and ISO 13485:2016, and claims 600+ partner journals, 500+ partner universities and a 99.45% satisfaction rate. Offices are in Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Istanbul and New York, with the group's operational headquarters in Mumbai and regional sites in seven languages.

  • Users who want to test the output before paying, since there is no free plan and no free trial
  • Teams that need an API, a mobile app or an integration into an existing workflow
  • Authors working to a same-day deadline: editing takes 1 to 6 days and submission packages 6 to 27 business days
  • Researchers expecting a publication guarantee, or wanting the science itself written for them, since Enago edits a manuscript rather than producing the research

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Twenty years of activity and a very high claimed volume: two million authors across 125+ countries
  • Fine-grained disciplinary expertise across 1,600+ subject areas rather than generalist proofreading
  • A public price grid and an openly accessible pricing calculator, which is uncommon in this sector
  • 365 days of aftercare included, with expert Q&A and Rejection Shield depending on the level chosen
  • Four ISO certifications, including ISO/IEC 27001:2022 for information security
  • Enago Lock, a documented and unusually specific confidentiality mechanism for submitted files
  • An international network with local offices, regional sites in seven languages, and free inclusions such as the editing certificate, journal formatting and word count reduction

Cons

  • No free plan and no free trial, so the output cannot be judged before paying, and full payment is required up front
  • Restrictive cancellation policy, with fees up to 100% depending on progress and no refund below USD 100 or outside PayPal
  • No hosting country declared, no DPA offered and no subprocessor list published
  • A contradiction between the home page promise on AI training and the license granted in the terms to improve the underlying algorithms
  • Inconsistent published claims: 256-bit SSL on the home page against 128-bit in the privacy policy, and ISO 27001 dated 2022 on some pages and 2013 in the privacy policy
  • A US entity but Indian governing law and exclusive Mumbai jurisdiction, with no full postal address published anywhere, including the site's structured data
  • Expensive for a self-funded doctoral student, from USD 174 for 3,000 words, with no API, no mobile app and no self-service path

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Enago handles your data.

GDPR overview

Enago states that its personal information handling policy and procedures were developed in line with the 1995 EU Data Protection Directive (95/46/EC) and the GDPR in force from 25 May 2018, and that it complies with national law. The policy's effective date is 25 May 2018. Rights listed include objection to marketing, withdrawal of consent, rectification, access, portability in a structured, machine-readable format, restriction and erasure, with privacy requests directed to kaizen@enago.com. Gaps remain: no Article 27 EU representative is named, no DPO is appointed, no DPA is published or offered, and no list of named subprocessors exists. Transfers outside the EU are mentioned with a reference to a European Commission adequacy decision or other applicable safeguards, but without detail or country list. The company is US-based, yet the terms are governed by Indian law with exclusive jurisdiction in Mumbai.

Who owns the data?

Enago's terms state that documents you submit remain your intellectual property. Enago and its staff claim no rights over submitted work, and editors sign a confidentiality agreement waiving any claim to intellectual property passing through the service. You warrant that you hold the necessary third-party rights in what you upload. Alongside that, the same terms have you grant Enago and the parties it works with a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable, sublicensable, perpetual and irrevocable license to copy, store and use your User Content, both to deliver the service and to improve the algorithms underlying it. Ownership stays with you; the license granted on top of it does not expire.

Reuse rights

Enago collects identity and contact details, billing address, payment details, account credentials, the files and documents you submit, correspondence and testimonials, plus usage data such as IP address, cookies, device model, browsing behavior and analytics. Declared purposes are service delivery, account administration, support, consent-based marketing, scientific research and statistical analysis, and the development of new products. The privacy policy states that personal data is not sold, rented or shared with other companies or organizations for commercial purposes, but it may be shared with group companies, advisors, marketing agencies, research institutes, suppliers, subcontractors and authorities. One tension is left open. The home page states that your private data is neither stored nor used for AI training, while the terms grant a perpetual, irrevocable license to use User Content to improve the algorithms underlying the services/software. Enago does not reconcile the two statements, and neither position can be presented here as the settled one. On your own side, you keep ownership of your documents and remain free to use, publish and reuse the edited output without asking permission.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Enago publishes no figures. Data is kept for no longer than reasonably necessary. For customers, that means the length of the contractual relationship and beyond it for regulatory obligations, disputes and fraud prevention; for prospects, until they unsubscribe; for support requests, until the request is resolved. Submitted documents are treated separately: Enago reserves the right to keep them on its systems according to its own policy and Indian government business regulations. Deletion is possible but not self-service, since you must email Enago stating that you want your files removed. Enago Lock provides for the file to be deleted from the editor's local systems after delivery. No retention period is quantified anywhere in the published documents, so an author cannot know in advance how long a manuscript will remain on Enago's servers.

Hosting summary

Enago declares no hosting country and no hosting region. The privacy policy states only that the personal data collected from you may be transferred to and stored in a CII-owned server and a third-party server, without naming either the location or the third party. It adds that data may be processed by staff operating outside those locations, and refers generically to a European Commission adequacy decision or other applicable safeguards for transfers, with no detail and no country list. No subprocessor list is published and no DPA is offered. The site itself is served through Amazon CloudFront, and the resolved IP points to an edge node in Zurich, which reflects content delivery only and says nothing about where manuscripts are stored. On jurisdiction, the counterparty is a US company, Crimson Interactive Inc., but the terms are governed by Indian law with exclusive jurisdiction in Mumbai, and document retention is expressly tied to Indian business regulations. In practice, an author uploading unpublished research cannot determine from the public documents which country holds the file, under whose law it sits at rest, or which third parties have access to it.

Watch-outs

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Enago.

  • The home page states that private data is neither stored nor used for AI training, while the terms grant a perpetual, irrevocable license to use your User Content to improve the underlying algorithms. The two claims are never reconciled, and unpublished research is exactly the kind of content where that gap matters
  • No hosting country or region is declared, no DPA is offered and no subprocessor list is published, so you cannot establish where a manuscript is stored or who else can reach it
  • Submitted documents may be kept under Enago's internal policy and Indian government business regulations; deleting them requires an explicit email request rather than a self-service control
  • The counterparty is a US entity, but the terms are governed by Indian law with exclusive jurisdiction in Mumbai, and no full postal address is published anywhere, including the site's structured data. No Article 27 EU representative and no DPO are named
  • Cancellation is accepted only where the wrong file was sent, with fees up to 100%, and refunds are excluded below USD 100, outside PayPal, or after 15 days
  • Published security claims diverge between pages: 256-bit SSL on the home page against 128-bit in the privacy policy, and ISO 27001 dated 2022 in some places and 2013 in others
  • Outsourcing language work order after order can quietly stop an author from building their own academic English. Enago also does not write the research and guarantees no publication, so expectations set too high turn into an expensive disappointment
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Technically there is nothing to set up: no installation, no configuration and no integration. You reach the service through the quote form or by email, then follow your orders in a web client account. The only format constraints are editorial, since a PDF must be single-column and double-spaced for PDF editing, and a TeX file must be accompanied by its PDF. The real friction is administrative rather than technical: obtaining a quote, paying in full before work begins and waiting out the turnaround. Anyone able to email a manuscript can use the service.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who will actually edit my manuscript?
A specialist in your own field, drawn from a pool of more than 3,000 editors holding a Master's degree or a PhD, with 19.4 years of average experience. Enago matches by precise specialty across 1,600+ subject areas: a neurosurgery paper goes to a neurosurgery expert, not to a general medicine or surgery editor.
How much does Enago cost?
Pricing is per order and depends on word count and turnaround, not on a subscription. Copy Editing starts at USD 174 for a 3,000-word manuscript over 6 days. Substantive Editing starts at USD 252 and Top Impact Scientific Editing at USD 600 for the same length and turnaround. Above 5,100 words, you upload the manuscript for a quote.
Is there a free plan or a free trial?
No. Enago offers neither a free plan nor a free trial, and full payment is required in advance before work begins, unless another arrangement has been agreed. There is no way to see the quality of the editing before committing to an order.
How long does an order take?
Editing turnarounds run from 1 to 6 days, with the shortest options costing more. Submission packages take longer: 6 to 27 business days depending on the package and the services included. Quotes themselves are announced within one hour.
Does Enago guarantee that my paper will be published?
No, and the site says so explicitly: purchase of the services does not guarantee acceptance or publication by any journal. Enago edits, formats and submits a manuscript, but the editorial decision belongs to the journal.
Will my manuscript be used to train AI?
This is genuinely unclear from the published documents. The home page states that your private data is neither stored nor used for AI training, while the terms of use grant Enago a perpetual and irrevocable license to use your User Content to improve the algorithms underlying the services and software. The two statements are not reconciled anywhere, so ask Enago directly in writing before uploading unpublished research.
How is my manuscript kept confidential?
Through Enago Lock, which converts your .docx into a proprietary .enago file with named access, a time limit, action tracing and deletion from the editor's local systems after delivery. Editors also sign confidentiality agreements, and the operation holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification for information security.
Can I cancel an order and be refunded?
Cancellation is only accepted where the wrong file was sent, and fees range from 0 to 100% depending on how far the work has progressed. Refunds are excluded if payment was not made through PayPal, if the amount is below USD 100, or after 15 days.
Is there a mobile app or an API?
No. There is no API, no iOS or Android app and no integration into an existing workflow. The service is reached through the website and by email, with a client account for tracking orders and downloading deliverables and invoices.
Which languages does Enago work in?
The interface and regional sites are available in English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, German and Turkish, with a Taiwanese site as well. Academic translation covers your source language into publication-standard English, and English into 50+ languages.
Conclusion

Should you pick Enago?

Enago is an established player rather than a new one: two decades on a market where seniority and references count, two million authors claimed across 125+ countries, and 3,000+ Master's and PhD editors matched across 1,600+ subject areas. Its real strength is that disciplinary depth combined with a chain that runs the whole way, from editing and plagiarism screening to formatting, cover letter, journal selection and submission on your behalf. Four ISO certifications, the Enago Lock file protection and 365 days of aftercare give the offer substance.

The main caution is the distance between what is promised and what is documented. No hosting country, no DPA and no subprocessor list are disclosed. GDPR compliance is asserted but not operationalized: no Article 27 representative, no DPO, and cross-border transfers covered by a generic reference to adequacy or safeguards. Two statements sit against each other without ever being reconciled: the home page says private data is neither stored nor used for AI training, while the terms grant a perpetual, irrevocable license to use User Content to improve the algorithms behind the service. Smaller divergences, such as 256-bit against 128-bit encryption, or ISO 27001 dated 2022 or 2013 depending on the page, do not help.

Cost is the other constraint. Entry is USD 174 for 3,000 words, there is no free plan and no trial, payment falls due in full before work starts, and cancellation can cost up to 100%. You commit without seeing the output first.

Read it for what it is and the decision gets simpler: a human professional service assisted by in-house AI tools, not a self-service AI product. For a funded researcher facing a language barrier, it is a credible option. For anyone who needs documented data governance, it is a harder call.
