What is Enago?
Enago is the author-services brand of Crimson Interactive, serving academic authors since 2005. It is a human editorial service rather than a self-service AI product: manuscripts are handled by more than 3,000 editors holding a Master's degree or a PhD, with 19.4 years of average experience, across 1,600+ subject areas. Matching is deliberately narrow, and Enago puts it plainly: if your paper is in neurosurgery, it will be assigned to a neurosurgery expert, not a general medicine or surgery expert. Editors are grouped into five families (Medicine, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering, Business and Economics, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) and many hold BELS or CSE certification. The company claims two million authors served in over 125 countries.
Three editing levels are offered. Copy Editing puts two editors on language, style and technical accuracy. Substantive Editing adds logical flow, content enrichment and 365 days of revision support. Top Impact Scientific Editing uses three editors and adds developmental scientific editing and a simulated peer review report. AI sits beside the human service rather than replacing it. An Enago One account opens the in-house suite: Trinka for grammar and writing checks, consistency, Word and LaTeX support, plagiarism, paraphrasing, AI content detection, AI Studio and citation tools, and Read, a literature review assistant with real-time Q&A over 200 million+ papers. Confidentiality is handled by Enago Lock, which converts a .docx into a proprietary .enago file with named, time-limited access, action tracing and deletion after delivery.

GDPR overview
Enago states that its personal information handling policy and procedures were developed in line with the 1995 EU Data Protection Directive (95/46/EC) and the GDPR in force from 25 May 2018, and that it complies with national law. The policy's effective date is 25 May 2018. Rights listed include objection to marketing, withdrawal of consent, rectification, access, portability in a structured, machine-readable format, restriction and erasure, with privacy requests directed to kaizen@enago.com. Gaps remain: no Article 27 EU representative is named, no DPO is appointed, no DPA is published or offered, and no list of named subprocessors exists. Who owns the data?
Enago's terms state that documents you submit remain your intellectual property. Enago and its staff claim no rights over submitted work, and editors sign a confidentiality agreement waiving any claim to intellectual property passing through the service. You warrant that you hold the necessary third-party rights in what you upload. Alongside that, the same terms have you grant Enago and the parties it works with a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable, sublicensable, perpetual and irrevocable license to copy, store and use your User Content, both to deliver the service and to improve the algorithms underlying it. Ownership stays with you; the license granted on top of it does not expire.
Reuse rights
Enago collects identity and contact details, billing address, payment details, account credentials, the files and documents you submit, correspondence and testimonials, plus usage data such as IP address, cookies, device model, browsing behavior and analytics. Declared purposes are service delivery, account administration, support, consent-based marketing, scientific research and statistical analysis, and the development of new products. The privacy policy states that personal data is not sold, rented or shared with other companies or organizations for commercial purposes, but it may be shared with group companies, advisors, marketing agencies, research institutes, suppliers, subcontractors and authorities. One tension is left open. The home page states that your private data is neither stored nor used for AI training, while the terms grant a perpetual, irrevocable license to use User Content to improve the algorithms underlying the services/software.
