Overview

What is Originality.ai?

Originality.ai is a content integrity platform built around two core checks: spotting text produced by AI models, and finding plagiarism. It was launched in November 2022 by Jon Gillham, who had previously sold a content marketing agency, and is published by Originality AI Inc. from Collingwood, Ontario, in Canada.

The detector is based on a modified version of the BERT model and forms part of a patented text analysis and verification system (U.S. Patent No. 12,253,988). Four detection models are offered: Lite, announced at 99% accuracy with a 0.5% false positive rate; Turbo, at over 99% accuracy with 1.5% false positives; Academic, at over 99% accuracy with under 1% false positives; and a multilingual model covering 30 languages with a claimed 97.8% accuracy. The team says it trains on adversarial data, continuously testing paraphrasing and editing tools such as Quillbot or Grammarly so that reworded AI text stays detectable.

Two features shape how a result is read. AI Allowance lets you decide how much AI you consider acceptable, so the score is measured against your own threshold rather than delivering a binary verdict. Deep Scan explains why a passage was flagged and how it could be edited, while sentence highlights point to the segments most likely to be machine-written.

Around the detector sits a wider suite: a plagiarism checker covering global, paraphrase, patchwork and mosaic cases, an automated fact checker, a grammar checker, a readability checker, a content quality score, a guideline checker, a content optimizer, plus Site Scan for a whole website and Bulk Scan for many texts at once.

Usage is metered in credits, one credit covering 100 words, with a 100-word minimum per scan. Anyone can run up to three free AI scans a day on 2,000 words without an account. Beyond that, the product runs as a web application, as a Chrome extension working inside Google Docs and Google Classroom with a Writing Replay that shows the text being typed, as a Moodle plugin, and as a documented REST API reserved for the Enterprise plan. The company publishes its own accuracy studies, false positive rates included, and points to peer-reviewed third-party research; its findings have been cited by CNN, The Guardian, The New York Times, Axios and Politico.

What it does

  • Detect text generated by ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Llama and other large language models
  • Check documents for global, paraphrased, patchwork and mosaic plagiarism
  • Set an AI Allowance threshold and read every score against the amount of AI you actually accept
  • Scan an entire website or a single URL in one click, and run many texts at once in bulk
  • Verify factual claims, grammar, readability and overall writing quality in the same pass
  • Prove authorship by replaying how a document was typed inside Google Docs
  • Plug detection into your own workflow through the REST API, the Chrome extension or the Moodle plugin

When to use Originality.ai / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Originality.ai is the right fit.

When to use Originality.ai

  • Web publishers and content agencies that need to verify work delivered by freelance or outsourced writers before publication
  • Teachers and academic institutions, through the Moodle plugin, Google Classroom use and an Academic model tuned for a false positive rate under 1%
  • Students and writers who want to evidence their own authorship, using the Chrome extension and its Writing Replay inside Google Docs
  • SEO and content marketing teams publishing at scale, thanks to Bulk Scan, full Site Scan and the Enterprise API
  • Researchers studying AI-generated content, for whom the company offers scan credits and engineering support

When not to use Originality.ai

  • Anyone looking for a writing or rewriting assistant: the tool analyses text, it never produces it
  • Users working on very short snippets, since scanning requires a minimum of 100 words
  • Institutions expecting a detection score to stand alone as proof of cheating, which the vendor itself advises against
  • Teams that need a mobile application, as no iOS or Android app is offered
  • Buyers who want to trial a paid plan before paying, since only the daily free quota is available

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Accuracy is documented publicly, with false positive rates given model by model and internal studies published in full
  • The vendor points to peer-reviewed third-party research instead of relying only on its own benchmarks
  • A complete suite rather than an isolated detector: plagiarism, facts, grammar, readability and quality in one pass
  • AI Allowance replaces a binary verdict with a threshold you set yourself, which fits hybrid human-AI workflows
  • Concrete integrations already exist for Google Docs, Google Classroom, Moodle and custom workflows through the API
  • Training opt-out and one-click deletion of scan history are available to every account holder
  • Prices are published in US dollars up to and including the Enterprise plan, with no mandatory sales call

  • Everything runs on credits, and subscription credits expire at the end of each monthly cycle if unused
  • API access is reserved for the Enterprise plan, which starts at USD 136.58 per month on annual billing
  • There is no free trial of a paid plan, and a credit card is requested at signup
  • Refunds are granted case by case and at the vendor's sole discretion
  • False positives are acknowledged by the vendor itself, and each scan requires at least 100 words
  • Text pasted into the free detector without an account may be used for training, as the opt-out covers accounts only
  • No security certification such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001 is published, and no subprocessor list is available

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Originality.ai handles your data.

GDPR overview

The privacy policy, last amended on 17 June 2026, states that practices are designed to comply with applicable laws including the EU General Data Protection Regulation and the UK GDPR, alongside Canadian federal and provincial privacy law and US state and student privacy laws. Cross-border transfers rely on European Commission Standard Contractual Clauses under Article 46(2) or on an adequacy decision under Article 45. Users in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK are told which rights they hold, including access, correction, deletion, portability, withdrawal of consent and complaint to a supervisory authority. A Privacy Compliance Officer is designated and reachable at the support address. No Article 27 representative in the European Union is named anywhere on the site, and no external compliance certification is published.

Who owns the data?

Under the terms and conditions, you keep ownership of the input and content you submit; uploading, scanning or processing text through the service does not transfer ownership to Originality AI Inc. In exchange you grant the company a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, copy, process, transmit, display, reproduce and analyse that content as needed to run, secure, maintain, support and improve the service. Any rights the company may hold in the output produced for you are assigned back to you. Where a school is the customer, that institution, not the individual student, controls decisions over student data.

Reuse rights

Scanned text and its results form your scan history, and the vendor states that it may use that history to train and improve its detection models unless you opt out. The opt-out is available to any account holder, applies to eligible past and future data, and can be combined with one-click deletion of scan history; text pasted into the free detector without an account is not covered and may be used for training. Personal data and student data are excluded from model training, and the company states it does not sell student data or use it for targeted advertising. Enterprise customers can negotiate stricter data-use restrictions in an order form, data processing agreement or security addendum. Output generated for you is yours to reuse.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Scan history is kept for 30 days on the Pro and Pay As You Go plans, and for 365 days on Enterprise. You can delete your scan history in one click, and full removal of an account and its data is available on request. For personal information more broadly, no fixed duration is published: the company says it keeps data only as long as reasonably necessary, with periods varying according to legal, contractual, tax, security and dispute-resolution obligations. Data may instead be de-identified or anonymised, in which case it can still be used for legitimate business purposes. Credits follow their own clock: subscription credits expire at the end of each monthly cycle, and credits bought through Pay As You Go expire two years after purchase.

Hosting summary

The privacy policy states that personal information may be stored and processed in Canada, in the United States and in other jurisdictions where the company or its service providers operate. No hosting provider is named, no data centre region is specified, and customers cannot choose where their data resides. Cross-border transfers are covered by contractual protections, with European Commission Standard Contractual Clauses under Article 46(2) of the GDPR or reliance on an adequacy decision under Article 45 where applicable. On the security side, the site advertises TLS 1.2 or higher with 256-bit encryption, and describes physical, contractual, technical and managerial safeguards, while stating that no system removes all risk. No list of subprocessors is published and no external certification such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001 is mentioned. Note that the public IP resolving for the domain belongs to a content delivery network, so it says nothing about where the data itself is actually hosted.

Watch-outs

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Originality.ai.

  • A detection score is a probability, not proof: the vendor itself warns against using it alone to accuse a student or a writer
  • False positives are real and acknowledged, and honest writers with a formulaic style can be flagged wrongly
  • Relying on a scan can replace editorial judgement and reading, which is precisely the skill the tool is meant to support
  • Text pasted into the free detector without an account may be used to train the models, and only account holders can opt out
  • Credits create a use-it-or-lose-it pressure, since subscription credits are cleared at the end of each monthly cycle
  • The published schema.org markup on the home page still carries an outdated postal address, so verify company details from the terms or contact page
  • No subprocessor list and no security certification are published, which limits what a compliance review can actually verify
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Getting started is immediate: paste a text into the home page checker and scan, with no account for the first three daily scans. Creating an account takes a few minutes, though a payment card is requested at signup. The Chrome extension installs from the Chrome Web Store in one click. The Moodle plugin needs an administrator to install it on the learning platform. The API requires a key and standard REST calls, and is limited to the Enterprise plan. There is nothing to host, no model to configure and no infrastructure work involved.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Originality.ai free to use?
There is a permanent free option: up to three AI scans a day on 2,000 words maximum, and no account is needed. There is no free trial of the paid plans; beyond the daily quota you buy credits or subscribe.
How accurate is the AI detector?
The vendor publishes accuracy per model: Lite at 99% with a 0.5% false positive rate, Turbo at over 99% with 1.5%, Academic at over 99% with under 1%, and a multilingual model at a claimed 97.8% across 30 languages. False positive rates are published alongside these figures.
How does the detection actually work?
The checker is based on a modified version of the BERT model and belongs to a patented text analysis and verification system, U.S. Patent No. 12,253,988. The team also trains against paraphrasing tools so that reworded AI text remains detectable.
Is my text used to train the models?
Scan history may be used to train and improve the models unless you opt out, and the opt-out is available to every account holder for eligible past and future data. Text pasted into the free detector without an account is not covered by that opt-out.
Is there an API, and which plan includes it?
Yes. A documented REST API exposes scan, batch scan, scan URL, credit balance and scan results endpoints, but access is reserved for the Enterprise plan.
Does it work inside Google Docs or a learning management system?
Yes. A Chrome extension brings checks into Google Docs and Google Classroom, with a Writing Replay that shows how a document was typed, and a Moodle plugin is available for institutions.
How are credits counted and do they expire?
One credit covers 100 words, with a 100-word minimum per scan. Subscription credits expire at the end of each monthly cycle, while credits bought through Pay As You Go expire two years after purchase.
Can I cancel, and can I be refunded?
You can cancel at any time and keep your credits and features until the end of the current period. Refunds are reviewed case by case and granted at the vendor's discretion, for reasons such as service disruption or billing errors.
Who is behind Originality.ai?
Originality AI Inc., based at 64 Hurontario St in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada. The tool was launched in November 2022 by founder Jon Gillham, who had previously sold a content marketing agency.
Conclusion

Should you pick Originality.ai?

Originality.ai occupies a clear and narrow position: it does not write, it verifies. For a publisher paying freelance writers, an agency answering to clients, or a teacher facing a stack of essays, that focus is the point, and the surrounding suite of plagiarism, fact, grammar, readability and quality checks makes it a single stop rather than one more tab.

What sets the vendor apart is less the accuracy claim itself than the way it is documented. Figures are given per detection model, false positive rates are published rather than hidden, and the company links to peer-reviewed third-party studies. It also states plainly that a detection score should never be the sole basis for disciplining a student, which is an unusual admission from a company selling detection. AI Allowance follows the same logic by letting you define the level of AI assistance you accept instead of imposing a verdict.

The commercial terms deserve attention before signing up. Everything is metered in credits, subscription credits vanish at the end of each month, API access only comes with the Enterprise plan, refunds are discretionary, and there is no trial of a paid plan beyond the three free daily scans. Text submitted through the free detector without an account may feed model training, whereas account holders can opt out in one click.

On transparency of governance the record is mixed: the legal documents are specific, recent and clearly about this product, the Canadian entity and its address are stated consistently, but no security certification and no subprocessor list are published. Originality.ai is a solid choice for teams whose credibility depends on the origin of what they publish, provided the score is treated as one signal among several, exactly as the vendor recommends.
