What is Sapling?
Sapling is a language model toolkit published by Sapling Intelligence, Inc. It has two faces: a developer platform made of an API and SDKs, and a writing assistant that layers itself onto the tools a team already uses. On the developer side, the REST API exposes endpoints for edits (grammar and spelling), spell checking, autocomplete, rephrasing, tone, sentiment, similar terms, semantic search, AI detection and quality scoring. Python and JavaScript SDKs wrap those endpoints and add ready-made UI components, with React and Angular samples published on GitHub. An official MCP server, shipped as an npm package and run locally over stdio on Node.js 18 or later, exposes seven tools (grammar check, spell check, AI detection, rephrase, summarise, sentiment and language detection) to assistants such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Zed and Cline. On the assistant side, a browser extension covers Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Brave, alongside add-ins for Google Docs and Google Workspace and for Microsoft Word and Outlook through AppSource. The Chrome listing reports around 60,000 users and a 4.4 out of 5 rating across 129 reviews. The home page groups the offer into six products: API and SDK, MCP Server, Grammar and Quality, AI Detection, Autocomplete and Snippets. Sapling Suggest adds recommended chat replies pulled from a team knowledge base, built on an announced partnership with OpenAI. The detector is presented as able to separate human writing from text produced by GPT-5, Claude 4.5, Gemini 2.5, Qwen3 and DeepSeek-V3. Language coverage is deliberately uneven: twelve languages get grammar and spelling, twenty-nine more get spelling only. GDPR overview
Sapling states on its security page that it is GDPR compliant and SOC 2 Type II certified, and it displays a GDPR badge next to SOC 2, HIPAA support, PCI support and annual penetration testing. The privacy policy names an Article 27 EU representative for EU and UK residents: George Barry, 4 St Christopher's Rd, Montenotte, Cork, T23 E9TR, Ireland. The same policy says the services are hosted in the United States and intended for US visitors, with transfers outside the EU made with the user's consent. Beyond that the implementation is thin: no standard contractual clauses, no named data protection officer, no published data processing agreement, no section listing GDPR rights such as access, rectification, erasure or portability, and no subprocessor list. Privacy requests go to a single generic address. Customers who cannot transfer data out of a region are offered cloud-premises or on-premises deployment instead.
Who owns the data?
You keep ownership of what you submit. The terms treat everything you send as User Content and make you solely responsible for it, but you also grant Sapling an irrevocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to reproduce, distribute, create derivative works of and sublicense it, solely to run and improve the Service and develop new products. Everything else in the Service belongs to Sapling, and any feedback you send is assigned to it as non-confidential. The privacy policy says customer data is neither sold nor rented, but allows sharing with affiliates, analytics partners such as Google Analytics, legal authorities and an acquirer in a merger. Sapling is not obliged to back up your content.
Reuse rights
Whatever the API returns to you (corrections, completions, rephrasings, suggested replies, scores) comes back as structured JSON and carries no published usage restriction, so you can put it to work in your own documents, tickets or product without asking permission. The limits sit on the service itself, not on its output. The terms forbid reselling, renting or sublicensing the Service, creating derivative works of it, reverse-engineering it, or accessing it in order to build a similar or competing product. Without a signed service agreement there is no commercial exploitation of the Service or of the content it displays. Scraping or mining the Service and generating automated queries are also prohibited, and the licence granted to you is limited, revocable, non-exclusive and non-transferable. US export control rules may apply.
Data retention & training
Hosting summary
The default backend runs on Amazon Web Services in the us-west region, and the privacy policy confirms that the services are hosted in the United States. The site's own IP resolves to a US Amazon address in Boardman, Oregon. Jurisdiction is therefore American: the terms place disputes in Santa Clara County, California. Processing happens on private networks configured to deny by default. Traffic is encrypted with TLS 1.2 and data at rest with AES-256. Before processing, Sapling strips numbers and numeric expressions such as phone numbers, along with email addresses and URLs. Customers with residency constraints are offered alternatives to the shared cloud: cloud-premises deployment in their own AWS, Azure or GCP account, or on-premises deployment through Docker containers. Payments are handled by Stripe, a PCI Level 1 Service Provider. No hosting region other than us-west is named for the standard cloud offering.
