Overview

What is Endless Visual Novel?

Endless Visual Novel (EndlessVN) is an AI storytelling game in which the graphics, music, story and characters are all generated as you play, so no two playthroughs are ever the same. Its makers position it primarily as a game, not a writing tool, though it can also be used to build choose-your-own-adventure visual novels. Narrative text comes from the open source GPT-J and GPT-NeoX models, run by third-party compute providers, with larger models announced. Sprites and backgrounds come from Stable Diffusion-style diffusion models, prompted by the language models so the imagery fits the setting. The soundtrack comes from neural networks that generate MIDI samples, post-processed afterwards and initially randomised per world. Everything runs in a Unity WebGL client inside a desktop browser, behind a mandatory account. The project is an Open Alpha: the developers state that the underlying engine is playable but quite bare, and features are added continuously from player feedback. Three tiers are offered: Free, Voyager at €9 per month and Creator at €15 per month. It is built by Augnition, a small R&D company based in Helsinki, Finland, which talks to players mainly through its Discord community, with development posts aggregated on r/EndlessVN and a newsletter. Multiplayer is envisaged but absent from the initial public alpha.

What it does

  • Generate an entire world from a short prompt
  • Customise characters and locations
  • Type your own lines through free text input
  • Play Official Worlds prepared by the developers
  • Play and share custom worlds with other players
  • Let the AI produce sprites, backgrounds and a soundtrack on the fly

When to use Endless Visual Novel

  • Visual novel and choose-your-own-adventure players who want effectively unlimited replayability, since no two playthroughs are the same

When not to use Endless Visual Novel

  • Mobile users: the WebGL game client does not run on phones or tablets, as the site states that WebGL builds are not supported on mobile devices
  • Anyone looking for a finished, stable game: this is an Open Alpha and the developers describe the engine as playable but quite bare
  • Creators who need to take the generated images or music away: the terms forbid it, allowing only screenshots, video and streaming

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Genuinely unlimited replayability: no two playthroughs are the same
  • An entire world from a short prompt, without complicated settings and adjustments to play around with
  • Four modalities generated together: text, characters, backgrounds and music
  • Serious privacy design, with AES-256, a per-user key that is never stored and logically separated services
  • Text generated during play belongs to the player
  • A permanent free tier with no time limit, a 14-day free trial on the paid tiers, and low prices at €9 and €15 per month with discounts announced during the public alpha
  • EEA hosting and an EU-established publisher, direct feedback channels with the developers through Discord, Reddit and an anonymous form, and nothing to install

Cons

  • An Open Alpha the publisher owns up to: the engine is playable but quite bare and can change without notice
  • Changes can render a Game Save invalid or cause loss of data
  • Desktop only, with no mobile support, and a permanent connection required
  • Older text models in GPT-J and GPT-NeoX, with larger models still at the announcement stage
  • No API, with programmatic access explicitly prohibited, and generated assets that cannot be exported for use outside the game
  • No refunds unless explicitly granted, account deletion only by emailing support, no full-time support staff or stated hours, and no postal address, company page, contact page or LinkedIn presence
  • Legal documents dated 2022 and a 2021 copyright point to a slow update cadence; generation can be slow under load, and outages shorter than seven days are not compensated

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Endless Visual Novel handles your data.

GDPR overview

Augnition Oy is established in the EU, in Helsinki, Finland. The terms grant the right to request access to, erasure of and correction of personal data, plus other requests based on applicable data protection law such as restriction of processing, and a standing right to refuse newsletters and marketing messages. The single contact point is support@endlessvn.io. Data is stored on Augnition's and its providers' servers inside the European Economic Area, with transfers outside only where necessary to run the service (Stripe, Mailchimp), to serve a user connecting from outside the EEA, or on request. The privacy policy (version 1.2.0) and the terms (version 1.2) both took effect on 1 September 2022; major updates are announced in advance and a diff is published through a public git repository. No retrieved page mentions the GDPR by name or claims compliance, and no DPO or Article 27 representative is named.

Who owns the data?

The controller is Augnition Oy, a private company registered in Helsinki, Finland; an account is an email address used as identifier plus a passphrase. Game Saves are encrypted on the servers with a key unique to each user that is never stored, and employees never access a Game Save without explicit permission. Text generated during play is yours to keep and use as you wish, creators who share worlds, sprites or other assets retain all rights to that content, and replacement sprites you supply stay in your browser, never uploaded. Worlds promoted to Official Worlds are reviewed manually and licensed case by case. Site and client assets remain the publisher's.

Reuse rights

Your email address is the login identifier, the communication channel and the link to the Stripe subscription; subscription status is checked at login to open or restrict access to content. Payments through Stripe create a customer relationship covering payment method and active or cancelled subscription status. Game Save choices and free-text entries are stored and reused as context to generate what happens next. Interaction logs with the Game Server are anonymised and kept for debugging, and can be tied back to a user only at that user's request. Anonymised snippets and aggregated metadata may be collected during play to improve the AI, and generation requests sent to third-party compute providers carry no user IDs. First-party functional cookies handle authentication, cookie-less analytics run through visitor-analytics.io, and Mailchimp handles the newsletter with open and click rates. Augnition commits never to share your information with third parties beyond what is necessary to provide the service.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Data is kept for as long as the paid subscription is active or the account remains active on the free tier. An account counts as active if it has a valid paid subscription or a login and use within the last six months; after a period of inactivity, the examples given being six or twelve months without logging in, the data is deleted. Exceptions apply for legal obligations and business reasons, such as payment records. Survey responses may be kept longer, but aggregated, anonymised or separated from any personal data, and data can persist for a long time in system backups. To request deletion, cancel your subscription and then write to support@endlessvn.io from the account's email address. The publisher says self-service deletion will be added to the site later.

Hosting summary

Data is stored on the servers of Augnition and of its service providers within the European Economic Area. Transfers outside the EEA occur only where necessary to provide the service (Stripe, Mailchimp), to serve a user connecting from outside the EEA, or on request. Transmission is over HTTPS, with encryption at rest both at the publisher and at its providers. The Game Save is encrypted on top of that with a key unique to the user, created at login and stored nowhere. Services are logically separated between account information, game code and save files. The generative models are run by third-party compute providers described as committed to data privacy but not named. No specific hosting country is named, and no certification such as SOC 2 or ISO is mentioned. The domain is served through Fastly, whose anycast IP resolves in the United States, which is a CDN matter and unrelated to where data is stored.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Endless Visual Novel.

  • Open Alpha: features can be changed, added or removed at any time and without notice, and some changes may cause loss of your data or render a Game Save invalid
  • The free trial requires a credit card and rolls into automatic billing at the end of the period unless you cancel first
  • Chaining free trials across several accounts can lead to a permanent ban of every account involved
  • No refunds unless the publisher explicitly grants one, and outages are compensated only beyond seven days and only on core functions
  • You cannot delete your account on your own: cancel the subscription, then write to support@endlessvn.io from the account address
  • No warranty of any kind, liability disclaimed except for gross negligence or intent, and access can be terminated with or without notice for any reasonable cause
  • Shared worlds are downloaded off-platform through Discord, so check the files and take them only from trusted sources; and with legal documents unchanged since September 2022, confirm the service is still actively maintained before paying
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Getting started is easy. Nothing to install: the Unity WebGL game client runs in the browser. An account is mandatory, created on the site with email verification. Desktop only, as mobile is not supported, with recent versions of Chrome, Firefox and Brave lightly tested. Functional cookies and JavaScript are required, and blocking them makes the site and the client unusable. A permanent connection is needed, and assets download and cache automatically during play, which can incur charges on a capped data plan. Disk space requirements are not stated. The publisher recommends testing performance on the free tier before buying.

Conclusion

Should you pick Endless Visual Novel?

Endless Visual Novel offers something genuinely rare: four modalities generated together, text, characters, backgrounds and music, inside a simple gameplay loop, with a permanent free tier and low prices that let you try it without risk. The counterpart is stated plainly by the publisher itself. This is an Open Alpha, the engine is deliberately described as bare, the text models belong to an older generation, and legal documents dated 2022 alongside a 2021 copyright are signals of a slow cadence. Privacy is handled seriously and the publisher is an identified European company. It is a good choice if you want to explore generative interactive fiction and are content to watch it evolve. It is not the right choice if you expect a finished game, mobile play, or the ability to take the generated images and music away with you.
