Overview

What is Meta AI?

Meta AI is the general-purpose assistant published by Meta Platforms, Inc. It runs on Muse Spark, the model family from Meta Superintelligence Labs, and its defining trait is distribution rather than novelty: instead of asking people to adopt a new destination, Meta put the same assistant inside the applications they already open. It answers on the web, in a dedicated iOS and Android app, and directly inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Facebook and Threads, as well as on Meta's AI glasses.

The product has moved well beyond question and answer. It generates and edits images, creates AI video, reads photos, documents and spreadsheets you upload, and talks back in a voice mode covering thirteen languages. Deep research is a distinct capability: the assistant builds a research plan, works through sources ranging from academic papers to what creators post on Meta's own platforms, and returns a structured report rather than a list of links. Shopping is treated as a first-class task, with product discovery, comparison and local recommendations backed by ratings and photos.

During 2026 the assistant became agentic. It now sets up a task once and then carries it forward without being re-prompted, whether that is a weekly meal plan, a watch on a product drop or an afternoon summary of a topic. Connecting Gmail, Google Calendar or Outlook lets it assemble daily briefings and manage reminders. Two answering modes are offered: Instant for speed and Thinking for problems that reward slower reasoning, the latter reserved for the app and the website. Incognito Chats exist for exchanges you would rather not keep.

The assistant is free for everyday use, with usage quotas on the compute-heavy features that a Meta One subscription raises. Personalisation draws on your public posts across Meta's apps, which is what makes it feel tailored and also what makes it worth reading the privacy terms. The minimum age is thirteen, the app interface covers thirty-nine languages, and some features remain limited to selected countries. Separately, the same domain hosts dev.meta.ai, where the Meta Model API exposes the Muse Spark models to developers under a pay-as-you-go model that is drop-in compatible with the OpenAI SDK.

  • People already living inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger or Facebook, where the assistant is built in
  • Students, writers and marketers who need drafting, image generation and quick research in one place
  • Anyone wanting a synthesised research report on a topic rather than a page of search links
  • Owners of Meta AI glasses, for whom the mobile app is the required companion

When not to use Meta AI

  • Companies needing a signed data processing agreement: none is published for the consumer service
  • Teams with data residency obligations, since Meta discloses no hosting country or region for Meta AI
  • Anyone who wants their conversations kept out of model training by default rather than by objection
  • Buyers who need published, stable pricing: Meta names its plans but never lists an amount
  • Users under 13, who are excluded by the terms of service

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Free for everyday use, with no installation required to get started
  • Already present in the apps most people open daily, which removes the adoption hurdle
  • Genuinely broad: text, images, video, voice and file analysis in a single assistant
  • Deep research returns a synthesised report instead of a list of search results
  • Thirty-nine interface languages in the mobile app
  • Calendar and mail connections turn it into a practical daily briefing tool
  • A developer API on the same domain, compatible with the OpenAI SDK

Cons

  • No published pricing: Meta names its subscription tiers but lists no amount anywhere
  • Meta One is still in limited testing and unavailable across much of the world
  • No support, legal or privacy email address is published; everything goes through forms
  • No data processing agreement, no subprocessor list and no disclosed hosting location
  • Interactions feed model training, and opting out requires an objection Meta must accept
  • The legitimate interest basis for AI training is publicly contested by privacy advocates
  • Some features and the app itself remain restricted to selected countries and languages

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Meta AI handles your data.

GDPR overview

The service has a real GDPR footprint rather than a compliance badge. Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, Merrion Road, Dublin 4, is the European provider, with EU-specific Meta AI terms in force since 13 May 2026 and the Irish Data Protection Commission as lead supervisory authority. Residents of the EU and the United Kingdom can exercise the right to object through Meta's Privacy Request channel. No Article 27 representative is designated, which is consistent: an Irish establishment removes the need for one. Nowhere in the pages collected does Meta state in so many words that Meta AI is GDPR compliant, so that field is left blank. The legitimate interest basis used for AI training has been publicly contested by the privacy group noyb.

Who owns the data?

Under the Meta AI terms, you keep every right, title and interest in the prompts you write, including intellectual property rights. The terms do not, however, grant you explicit ownership of what the assistant generates in return, and Meta retains its rights over the underlying AI technology. Meta Platforms, Inc. is your counterparty outside the European Union; inside it, the service is provided by Meta Platforms Ireland Limited. Content shared with the assistant feeds Meta's own model development, and the terms warn users in plain words not to share information they would not want the AIs to use and store. Ownership of prompts therefore sits with you; control over their downstream use largely does not.

Reuse rights

Meta uses interactions with its AIs, together with public posts from Facebook, Instagram and Threads, to build and improve its generative models. In the European Union it relies on legitimate interest rather than consent, which is why an objection right exists instead of an opt-in. Users in the EU and the United Kingdom can object through Meta's Privacy Request channel, but the objection has to be accepted by Meta before it takes effect, and it does not cover content that other people publish about you. One carve-out is documented: Meta states it does not use linked calendar data to train its models. Nothing in the collected material grants end users a licence to reuse Meta's own material without permission.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Meta publishes no retention period for Meta AI conversations. What it does document are controls rather than durations: you can review and delete Meta AI responses from your activity log, and export stored conversation data through the Export Your Information tool. Incognito Chats are designed not to be kept in your history at all. On the voice side, recordings are deleted immediately after processing when voice storage is switched off, and conversations captured by an unintended activation are deleted within ninety days of detection. Beyond those specific cases, how long ordinary chat data is kept is not stated in the material collected.

Hosting summary

Meta publishes no hosting location for Meta AI. Neither a country nor a broad region is stated in the material collected, and no subprocessor list is available, so the data hosting fields are left empty rather than guessed. What is known is jurisdictional rather than physical: Meta Platforms, Inc. in Menlo Park, California operates the service globally, while Meta Platforms Ireland Limited in Dublin is the provider for the European Union and brings the service under Irish Data Protection Commission supervision. A DNS lookup resolves the domain to an address inside Meta's own network seen in Zurich, but that is a content delivery point of presence and says nothing about where conversations are stored. Anyone with data residency requirements should treat the hosting question as unanswered.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Meta AI.

  • Personalisation is fed by your public posts across Meta's apps, so the assistant knows more about you than a neutral chatbot would
  • Conversations contribute to model training by default; the objection route is narrow, conditional and mainly European
  • An assistant embedded in the apps you already use all day makes reflexive delegation easy, and reflexive delegation erodes the skills it replaces
  • Answers are generated, not verified; deep research reports read authoritatively even when a source is weak
  • Without a published hosting jurisdiction or subprocessor list, you cannot assess where your data goes
  • Sharing documents or spreadsheets with a consumer service carries no contractual confidentiality protection
  • Age gating at thirteen means teenagers use it, with all the dependency and content questions that follow
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Essentially none. The assistant runs in a browser or through the mobile app, and a Meta account is the only prerequisite. Users of WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger or Facebook can simply start a conversation with no setup at all. Linking Gmail, Google Calendar or Outlook takes a few taps in App Connections, and pairing Meta AI glasses is handled by the same app. Developers face a slightly larger step, but the Meta Model API is drop-in compatible with the OpenAI SDK, so existing integrations need little more than a new endpoint and key.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Meta AI free to use?
Yes. Meta describes the assistant as free for everyday use. Compute-heavy features carry usage quotas, and a Meta One subscription raises them.
Where can I use Meta AI?
On the web, in the dedicated iOS and Android app, and directly inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Facebook and Threads. It also powers Meta's AI glasses.
Which model powers Meta AI?
Muse Spark, developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs. Version 1.1 was announced in July 2026 as the model behind the assistant's task-handling abilities.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes, thirteen. The terms of service state you cannot access the AIs under that age, or under a higher age where local law requires it.
Are my conversations used to train Meta's models?
Yes. Interactions and public posts feed model development. Users in the EU and the UK can object through Meta's Privacy Request channel, though Meta must accept the objection.
How many languages does it support?
The mobile app interface covers thirty-nine languages. Voice mode is narrower, currently supporting thirteen.
Is there an API for developers?
Yes, but it is a separate product. The Meta Model API at dev.meta.ai exposes the Muse Spark models through an endpoint that is drop-in compatible with the OpenAI SDK.
Who is legally behind Meta AI?
Meta Platforms, Inc., 1 Meta Way, Menlo Park, California. In the European Union the service is provided by Meta Platforms Ireland Limited in Dublin.
Is Meta AI available everywhere?
No. Meta states the app, the Vibes app and the website are not yet available everywhere, and that certain features are limited to selected countries and languages.
Can I chat without keeping a history?
Yes. Incognito Chats are designed for exchanges that are not retained in your conversation history.
Conclusion

Should you pick Meta AI?

Meta AI is the most widely distributed AI assistant on the market, and that is the point of it. By placing the same Muse Spark assistant inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Facebook and Threads, alongside a website and a dedicated mobile app, Meta removed the step where a user has to decide to go somewhere new. The capability set is genuinely broad: conversation by text or voice, image and video generation, analysis of uploaded files, product research, and a deep research mode that returns a structured report rather than a page of links. Since 2026 it also acts rather than only answers, carrying tasks forward once and connecting to Gmail, Google Calendar and Outlook for briefings and reminders.

The reservations are equally clear and mostly concern what Meta does not publish. There is no public price list: the Meta One tiers are named on Meta's help pages, but the amounts circulating come from press coverage of a May 2026 announcement, and the subscription is still in limited testing. There is no support, legal or privacy email address, no data processing agreement, no subprocessor list and no stated hosting jurisdiction. Interactions feed model training by default, with an objection route that applies mainly to the EU and the UK and that Meta must accept before it takes effect.

The practical reading is that Meta AI is an excellent free assistant for personal use and a poor fit for any professional context that requires contractual guarantees. If you already spend your day in Meta's apps, it is the assistant with the least friction available to you. If you need to know where your data lives and on what terms, this is not the tool to build on.
