What is Pismo?
Pismo is an AI writing assistant that runs as a native desktop application on Windows and macOS, not as a browser extension. It sits in the background, and you call it with a keyboard shortcut or a floating on-screen widget once you have selected text anywhere on your machine. The result replaces your selection in place, which removes the copy, switch tab, paste, copy back cycle that using a chatbot normally imposes.
Six actions ship as standard: improve the writing, translate, shorten or lengthen, change the tone, fix spelling and grammar, and run a custom prompt. That last one is the part regular users tend to live in. You can write, save and organise your own instructions and bind each to a hotkey; the publisher's own examples include Fix code, Reply to angry customer, Explain Like I'm 5, Summarize in 3 Bullet Points, Convert to Twitter Thread and Rewrite as Native Speaker.
Under the hood the default model is GPT-4o Mini. Anyone who wants a different engine can switch on BYOK and paste their own OpenRouter key, which opens the door to OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral and others; a direct OpenAI connection is not supported. Because everything runs through cloud models, an internet connection is mandatory and there is no offline mode.
The app is designed to work wherever you already type. The publisher lists Word, Slack, Discord, VS Code, Outlook, Apple Mail, Spark, Superhuman, Gmail, Notion, Obsidian, Google Docs, Evernote, Telegram, WhatsApp Desktop, Chrome, Safari, Edge, Arc, Figma and Photoshop text layers. The interface itself is available in thirteen languages, one account works across as many devices as you own, and usage is metered in credits where one executed prompt equals one credit, though paid plans advertise unlimited requests.
Behind the product is 3F Venture S.A., a Luxembourg venture studio whose portfolio also includes EasyBiz, Tailride, Rippla, BigBro, Luxtoday and Seturon. Pismo claims more than 2,000 customers, and an iOS build is in beta through TestFlight.

GDPR overview
Pismo states its compliance in plain words on the features page and says its servers sit in the European Union, in Belgium. The publisher, 3F Venture S.A., is established in Luxembourg, so no Article 27 representative is required and none is named; no data protection officer is named either, and contact@pismo.ai is the only address given. A standard data processing addendum is published openly at pismo.ai/dpa, effective 17 April 2025 and updated 24 November 2025. It casts the company as processor, lists every sub-processor by name, relies on standard contractual clauses and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework for transfers outside the EEA, and commits to assisting with access and erasure requests and to reporting breaches without undue delay. Audit rights are capped at one security questionnaire a year. Accounts and data can be deleted from app.pismo.ai.
Who owns the data?
Section 2 of the terms of service is unambiguous: you keep ownership of your User Content, meaning the text and documents you type, upload or transmit, and 3F Venture S.A. claims none of it. Both the prompts you submit and the outputs you receive count as your User Content. In exchange you grant the company a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence limited to four stated purposes: operating, improving, troubleshooting and debugging the products; protecting them; customising them; and developing new products or features. Its service providers may assist in those activities. The same section promises that User Content will never be sold or licensed to third-party data brokers.
Reuse rights
Because outputs are treated as your own User Content, you may reuse them without asking permission, in emails, documents, marketing copy or code comments alike. Two limits are spelled out. The terms warn that outputs are not guaranteed to be unique, since the same or a similar result may be produced for other users, so exclusivity cannot be assumed. You must also not present an output as written solely by a human, nor use the tool to build a competing product or train a rival model. On the vendor's side, the privacy policy says it collects only usage data and your email address, and shares them with third parties on your explicit consent or where the law compels it. The data processing addendum adds that prompts and outputs are not used to train Pismo's own foundation models unless the customer explicitly opts in.
Data retention & training
Hosting summary
Pismo announces that its servers are located in the European Union, in Belgium. Hosting runs on GigaElixir, itself built on Google Cloud Platform and AWS infrastructure, and the industry certifications cited, SOC 2 and ISO 27001, belong to that host rather than to the publisher. Annex III of the data processing addendum names each sub-processor and its jurisdiction: GigaElixir and Google in the EU for hosting, database and underlying infrastructure, Cloudflare in the United States for DNS, CDN, web application firewall and DDoS protection, OpenAI in the United States as the model provider, and Stripe in the United States for payments. Transfers outside the European Economic Area are covered by standard contractual clauses or the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Technical measures listed include TLS 1.2 and 1.3 in transit, API keys encrypted at rest, multi-factor authentication on administrative access and automated backups. One caveat: the public website resolves to a content delivery node in Ukraine, which belongs to the site builder and says nothing about where user data lives.

- Your text passes through a third-party model provider in the United States, so despite Belgian hosting a transfer outside the EU genuinely happens on every request
- On macOS the app needs the accessibility permission, which means it can read and replace text in your other applications
- Leaning on a hotkey for every sentence can quietly erode the habit of drafting and self-editing, especially in a second language you are still learning
- Outputs are not guaranteed to be unique and are not warranted for factual accuracy, so anything consequential still needs a human read
- No security certification is claimed by the publisher itself; the SOC 2 and ISO 27001 mentions belong to its hosting provider
- Health information covered by HIPAA is off limits without a business associate agreement, and an account left unused for twelve months without a paid subscription can be terminated

Pismo answers a narrow, very real irritation: the constant round trip between the window where you write and the browser tab where the AI lives. By running natively on Windows and macOS and acting on whatever text you have selected, it removes that trip entirely, and the custom prompts bound to hotkeys are what turns it from a novelty into a habit. The people it serves best are those who write all day in a language that is not their first, and the international teams, support desks, marketers and researchers around them.
What stands out at this price is the legal groundwork. The publisher is established in the European Union, the data processing addendum is public rather than available on request, every sub-processor is named, hosting is announced in Belgium and the addendum states that customer prompts are not used to train the vendor's models. That is more than many larger writing tools put in writing. It is worth reading alongside the broad licence the terms of service take over User Content, since the two documents are not saying quite the same thing.
The gaps are just as clear. There is no API, no Android app, an iOS build still in beta, no permanent free tier on the pricing page and a single email address for support. Nothing works without an internet connection, and the publisher claims no security certification of its own. At EUR 8 a month, with a one-week trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee, the cost of finding out whether the hotkey habit sticks is low, which is probably the fairest way to judge it.
