MESA
MESA is an AI automation platform for Shopify and Etsy merchants. Describe a task in plain English and its assistant builds, connects and deploys the workflow, drawing on 100+ integrations, 300+ templates and 24 built-in tools.
What is MESA?
MESA is a workflow automation platform built specifically for Shopify and Etsy stores, published by ShopPad Inc. (DBA MESA), a Delaware corporation based in San Francisco. ShopPad was founded in 2012 and describes itself as a fully distributed team; its cofounders are Aaron Wadler, who serves as chief executive, and Ryan O'Donnell.
The entry point is conversational. A merchant types what should happen — tag international orders above $500 and notify the warehouse on Slack, for instance — and the AI assistant assembles the whole workflow, triggers, conditions, actions and error handling included, then deploys it. The same assistant works two other ways: it answers one-off requests such as querying orders or exporting a customer list to Google Sheets without any permanent workflow, and it can sit inside a workflow as an AI step that classifies text, reads sentiment or generates content.
Merchants who prefer to build by hand get a drag-and-drop editor with direct access to native Shopify objects — orders, customers, products, metafields — so no field mapping is required. MESA claims 100+ native integrations and 300+ ready-made templates grouped by purpose: orders, inventory, customer experience and fulfilment.
Around that sit 24 built-in tools in seven families: AI; logic, with Filter, Logic, Paths, Loop, Approval, Delay and Relay; communication, with Email and SMS; data, with a PostgreSQL-backed Data tool, Queue and Activity; integration, with API, Webhook, FTP, Web Request and RSS; transformation, with Transform and JavaScript Custom Code; and utilities, with Schedule, Form, Image, Package Tracking, Scraper and Weather. Running the whole thing are intelligent error handling, automatic replay of failed tasks, a full activity log and Time Travel, which applies a workflow to past data.
Developers are catered for as well, through code steps, a documented admin API and a command-line interface. Human help is presented as part of the product rather than an extra: free workflow setup on every plan, live chat with automation experts, a same-day first response on average, and managed services with SLAs on the upper tiers.
The stance against general-purpose tools is explicit — one merchant quoted on the site calls it like Zapier but exactly designed for Shopify. MESA claims 1,000+ merchants and a 4.9 rating on the Shopify App Store. There is no mobile app: everything runs in the web application installed from Shopify.
What it does
- Turn a plain-English description into a live, multi-step workflow in seconds
- Trigger automations on Shopify events such as a new order, low stock or a new customer
- Tag and route orders by value, origin or contents, then alert a team on Slack, e-mail or SMS
- Keep inventory and orders in sync across Shopify, Etsy, Odoo, Airtable and Google Sheets
- Answer ad-hoc questions about store data and export the result without building a workflow
- Insert an AI agent step to classify, summarise or decide on free-form text such as order notes
- Replay failed tasks or apply a new workflow to historical data with Time Travel and backfill
When to use MESA / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if MESA is the right fit.
When to use MESA
- Shopify merchants with no in-house developer who already know what they want automated
- Etsy sellers running the same shop across two marketplaces and tired of manual double entry
- Operations and fulfilment teams drowning in order tagging, routing and inventory sync
- Ecommerce marketers wiring Shopify to Klaviyo, HubSpot, Slack or Google Sheets
- Agencies and high-volume stores that need a custom plan and hands-on expert setup
When not to use MESA
- Anyone without a Shopify or Etsy storefront: the entire product is ecommerce-native
- Teams automating hundreds of non-ecommerce apps, a case MESA itself hands back to Zapier
- Small budgets that still need Odoo, Salesforce, HubSpot, Recharge or Gorgias, gated behind the $99 Pro plan
- Buyers who want a mobile app: none exists on iOS or Android
- Organisations requiring EU data residency, a named Article 27 representative or a security certification
How to use MESA
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Install MESA from Shopify through app.getmesa.com/install, the destination of every Start for free button on the site
- Pick a starting point: describe the task to the AI assistant in plain English, open one of the 300+ templates, or build from scratch in the visual editor
- Let the assistant assemble the logic and connect the apps; it handles authentication and field mapping on its own
- Review the generated steps, adjust conditions by drag-and-drop or by asking for a change in words
- Add an Approval step wherever a human should sign off before the workflow continues
- Turn the workflow on and let it run; the site's promise is to switch it on and walk away
- Watch executions in the activity log and search the run history when something looks wrong
- Replay a failed task manually, or use Time Travel to apply the workflow to orders that already happened
- Book the free setup session if the first build stalls, or order Workflow Services for a complex case delivered in a day
- Reach for JavaScript custom code steps, the admin API or the CLI when the no-code path runs out

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how MESA handles your data.
GDPR overview
GDPR compliance is claimed in writing. The privacy policy opens with a notice to European and Californian residents stating that it sets out the legal basis for processing as the GDPR and the CCPA require, and names contract performance and legitimate interest as those bases. A self-contained data processing addendum, last updated on 17 January 2024, incorporates the 2021 Standard Contractual Clauses for restricted transfers, covers the UK GDPR, describes security measures and lists sixteen subprocessors. European users are told they may request access, correction or deletion by writing to legal@theshoppad.com, and that their data will be transferred outside Europe, to Canada and the United States. Three gaps deserve mention: no Article 27 EU representative is designated, no data protection officer is named, and no EU hosting option is offered.
Who owns the data?
Under the data processing addendum the merchant is the controller and MESA is only the processor, so the store keeps ownership of the data it pushes through its workflows. Account holders can log in at any time to add, correct or delete their personal information. MESA retains the right to keep data from closed accounts to satisfy legal obligations, prevent fraud, collect fees owed and resolve disputes, and it states that it does not sell personal information as the CCPA defines the term. The service itself, its software and any derivative works remain MESA's property, and feedback sent to the vendor is licensed to it perpetually and free of charge.
Reuse rights
Merchants keep the use of their own store data: nothing in the terms restricts what they do with the orders, customers and reports their workflows produce, and no permission has to be requested to reuse them. MESA's own uses are narrower and listed: improving and delivering the service, contacting and authenticating users, processing payments through Stripe and PayPal, and sending product news that can be unsubscribed from by e-mail. Sixteen subprocessors are named in the addendum. The AI steps run on ChatGPT without requiring an OpenAI account, and only the variables explicitly configured in the builder leave the platform; MESA says it does not store those exchanges beyond the customer's retention date and that OpenAI does not train its models on them. Two reservations: MESA publishes no position of its own on model training, and offers no documented opt-out. Disclosure remains possible for legal, fraud or security reasons.
Data retention & training
Hosting summary
MESA hosts and processes data in the United States. Appendix 3 of the data processing addendum lists sixteen subprocessors and gives United States as the location for every one of them, with Amazon Web Services named as the cloud hosting and infrastructure provider. The rest of the list covers Chargebee, Cloudflare, Customer.io, Google Analytics, HelpScout, HevoData, HotJar, Mailgun, MongoDB, Snowflake, Stripe, Twilio, Plivo, OpenAI and Cloudinary. The website itself is served behind Cloudflare on an anycast address. The privacy policy states plainly that information will be transferred outside Europe, including to Canada and the United States, and the addendum incorporates the 2021 Standard Contractual Clauses for those restricted transfers, with the equivalent UK mechanism where the UK GDPR applies. No EU or UK data residency option is offered, and the jurisdiction governing both the addendum and the terms is the State of California.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting MESA.
- Billing follows tasks, not workflows: a single busy automation can quietly consume a month's allowance
- The saved card is charged automatically on day 8 after the trial, and no refunds are ever granted
- Cancelling outside Shopify billing requires 30 days' written notice before the next cycle
- Handing routine judgement to an AI agent erodes the team's own grasp of why a rule exists, and an unnoticed misfire can tag or e-mail thousands of customers before anyone looks
- Workflow activity data disappears within 7 days of leaving, and logs are kept only 7 days on the first four plans, so evidence of what happened is short-lived
- All data leaves Europe for the United States and Canada with no residency option, no Article 27 representative and no security certification to lean on
- Automating customer messages through e-mail and SMS steps makes over-contacting easy and the reputational damage falls on the merchant, not the platform
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Low. MESA installs from Shopify in one click, and the AI tool runs on ChatGPT without requiring an OpenAI account. No technical knowledge is needed: you can start from a template, describe the workflow in plain English, or have an expert build the first one with you in a free session. The assistant handles integration authentication and field mapping, and the examples published on the site show a workflow deployed in under a minute. A more demanding path exists for technical teams, with JavaScript code steps, an admin API and a command-line interface.

Should you pick MESA?
MESA is a niche tool and makes no secret of it: every part of the product is calibrated for Shopify and Etsy, from the native triggers to the templates and the ecommerce vocabulary the assistant already understands. That focus is its main argument against the general-purpose platforms it compares itself to, and the site is unusually candid about when a merchant should pick one of them instead.
The plain-English entry point and the free expert setup genuinely lower the barrier for a merchant with no developer, and unlimited workflows on every plan, including the free one, remove the temptation to ration automation. The real cost sits elsewhere: in the task counter, which one busy workflow can burn through quickly, in the separate premium quota that AI, e-mail and SMS steps draw on, and in the $99 Pro tier required before Odoo, Salesforce, HubSpot, Recharge or Gorgias can be connected at all. Budgeting means multiplying steps by frequency, not counting workflows.
Data governance is honest but minimal. A public data processing agreement, standard contractual clauses and a named list of sixteen subprocessors put MESA ahead of many tools of its size, yet everything is hosted in the United States, no EU representative is designated under Article 27, no data protection officer is named and no security certification is claimed. A European merchant handling sensitive customer data should read the addendum before committing.
Behind the product is a company established in 2012 with a claimed 1,000+ merchants and a 4.9 rating on the Shopify App Store, which is reassuring for an operational dependency. For a Shopify store with a backlog of manual routines, MESA is a credible and unusually well-supported way to clear it; for anything outside that ecosystem, it is simply the wrong tool.
