IURIX is a Vienna-built AI legal research assistant that searches official Austrian and European law databases and returns answers in which every statement carries a version-accurate citation linking straight back to the primary source.
What is IURIX?
IURIX is an AI legal research platform built by IURIX GmbH, a Vienna legal-tech company founded on 17 April 2026 by Christian Haberl and Arnulf Schaunig. Three tools sit behind one interface. RICI is the one that is live. It searches nine official corpora in parallel: Austrian federal law, the state law of all nine Länder together with municipal rules, case law, legislative materials, the finance ministry's Findok documentation, collective agreements, EU legislation from EUR-Lex, EU case law from CURIA and Strasbourg case law from HUDOC. The German-language pages put the scale at 469,406 federal law sources, more than 1.3 million decisions and legal principles, 362,000 Findok documents, over 60,000 EUR-Lex documents and more than 4,900 collective agreements and wage tables in full text.
The design principle is source binding. Language models are combined with a retrieval system, several strategies run in parallel — keyword, semantic and hybrid — and the synthesis draws only on what was retrieved, never on what the model happens to know. Every sentence carries its references down to the paragraph, margin number or case number, and each one links back to the original. Where nothing supports a statement, the system declines to answer rather than inventing a citation. A version logic separates the rule in force today from the one that applied at the time of the facts.
RITA, in early-access beta since July 2026, answers factual questions from Austrian public registers: the company register with more than 342,000 profiles, ÖNACE industry codes, published financial statements, the association and trade registers, EU VAT-ID validation, and industrial property covering roughly 3.9 million trade marks, over 3 million patents and around 2 million designs. It draws shareholding chains as multi-level org charts. FIRE, intended for web-based research across country reports and NGO and ministry publications, remains in development.
At the time of review the product sits in a closed test phase: one hundred free seats, allocated on individual application, with the vendor stating plainly that IURIX will become a paid product.

GDPR overview
Compliance is claimed explicitly and in detail rather than in passing. IURIX GmbH names itself controller under Article 4(7) for site and account data, cites Article 6(1)(b) for contract performance and Article 6(1)(f) for quality assurance, debugging and audience measurement, and lists the rights under Articles 15 to 21 with office@iurix.ai as the contact. The Austrian data protection authority is named with its address and email. An Article 28 processing agreement is published in full and takes effect on registration, breach notification is promised within 48 hours, and changes to the sub-processor list are announced 30 days ahead with a right to object. As an Austrian company IURIX needs no Article 27 representative. No external certification such as SOC 2 or ISO is published.
Who owns the data?
Under the data processing agreement published in full on the site, the professional user remains the controller within the meaning of Article 4(7) GDPR and IURIX GmbH acts solely as processor under Article 4(8). The company processes data only on the controller's documented instructions, using the service itself counting as that instruction, and may not pass it beyond the named sub-processors. Customers may request their data back in a common format before deletion, and may verify compliance through information requests, inspection of evidence or, by arrangement, an on-site audit. All staff and technical auxiliaries are contractually bound to confidentiality, with explicit reference to the Austrian professional secrecy provisions.
Reuse rights
The agreement grants IURIX no reuse right of its own. Queries are processed to run the search and return the result; the unanonymised original is retained for testing and debugging, while anonymised queries are held briefly for quality assurance. Training AI models on customer data is expressly excluded, for IURIX and for every sub-processor alike, which the company states is secured through the enterprise and API tiers of the model providers. Nothing is passed to third parties beyond the listed processors. On the user's side, results can be exported to Word or PDF; the underlying material is official public law, so onward use is governed by those primary sources rather than by any licence granted here.

Hosting summary
Processing is declared to take place within the EU throughout. Application and database processing runs on Microsoft Azure in the Austria East region. Anonymisation is carried out by Mistral AI in France, and API routing to the models goes through Requesty in Frankfurt; these two are the only components that see the unanonymised query. Downstream generative inference with Anthropic, Google Vertex AI and OpenAI receives anonymised queries only and is declared to run in EU regions, even though all three are US-headquartered. Authentication and support email run on Microsoft services with EU data location. The front end, CDN, TLS termination and edge proxy are handled by Cloudflare across a global edge, with traffic decrypted at the edge and immediately re-encrypted towards the EU backend. The vendor states that personal data does not leave the European Economic Area, and that sub-processors are chosen with an EU processing location wherever possible. Note that the site's public IP resolves to a Cloudflare anycast node geolocated in the United States: that is the CDN, not where the data lives.

There is nothing to install: IURIX is a web application at app.iurix.ai that also works in a mobile browser, with no password to create — sign-in is by Microsoft account or a one-time email code. No configuration, no integration and no source setup are required, since source selection is automatic. The only real friction is administrative: you apply with your firm, professional role and work email, and the team reviews each request. Should you pick IURIX?
IURIX is a deliberately narrow tool, and that is its strength. Rather than competing with general-purpose assistants on breadth, it does one thing: it searches the official Austrian and European legal corpora and refuses to say anything it cannot pin to a citation. The version logic, the parallel search across nine corpora and the reasoned non-answer where no source exists all point the same way, and they address the failure mode that has been getting law firms into trouble elsewhere.
The compliance work is the second surprise. For a company founded in April 2026, publishing the processing agreement in full, naming every sub-processor with its processing location, and addressing the Austrian professional secrecy rules head-on is more than most established vendors offer. Anonymisation before the model and EU-only processing are stated clearly and specifically enough to be checked.
The reservations are real, though. Access is closed and discretionary, and no pricing exists at all — the vendor says the product will become paid, but publishes neither a rate nor a date, which makes budgeting impossible. Answers take two to five minutes, there is no follow-up mode, the application is in German, and the site contradicts itself on corpus figures between its German and English pages. Nothing is certified externally.
For an Austrian lawyer, tax adviser or public-sector jurist, it is worth applying for a seat: the fit is precise and the citation discipline is the point.
