What is CropUp?

CropUp is a Danish software platform that turns ordinary drone photographs into weed maps precise enough to spray from. A farmer, contractor or crop advisor flies a field with an off-the-shelf mapping drone, uploads the images, and an AI model separates soil, crop, root weeds, grass weeds and other weed categories down to the level of individual plants and leaves. The result becomes a prescription map that a conventional sprayer can follow, so herbicide is applied only where weeds actually are. The vendor, Akson Robotics ApS, reports an average 75% reduction in chemical use across more than 500 farms, and up to 90% in the best fields. The platform deliberately works from standard RGB imagery. Multispectral sensors are optional, which the vendor says lets a field be surveyed up to three times faster; a DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise covers 40 to 100 hectares per hour, and a Matrice 300 or 350 with a Zenmuse P1 roughly twice that. Processing takes between three and seventy-two hours. Four products are sold, each priced per hectare: AI Weed Mapping, an NDVI thresholding tool for variable-rate application maps, a plant counting system that highlights weak establishment zones, and manual measurement tools for documenting field damage or insurance cases. A fifth module, AI Satellite Prediction, works before the season starts: it reads historical multispectral satellite imagery to predict relative weed pressure one to two years ahead and splits a field into low, medium and high pressure zones. Supported crops include grass and clover, grass seed production, most row crops such as beet, spinach, beans and potatoes, mature cereals, wheat and spring barley. Maps export to more than ten terminal formats and to ISOXML, GeoTIFF and shapefile, and field boundaries can be pulled in from John Deere Operations Center, CNH Industrial or the Danish agricultural agency Landbrugsstyrelsen. The work happens in a web application at app.cropup.ai, available in English, Danish, German and Brazilian Portuguese, and usage is paid with prepaid credits. Around it sits a network of more than sixty partners across Denmark, Germany, Poland, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Czechia, Finland, Latvia and the United Kingdom, so a farm can start without owning a drone.

  1. Plan the flight using CropUp's mission planning tools, or book a drone pilot from the partner map
  2. Fly the field with a supported mapping drone, following the crop and camera setup guides
  3. Upload the JPEG, DNG or TIFF images, or drag in a whole folder, and attach them to the mission
  4. Import the field boundaries from a shapefile, from Landbrugsstyrelsen, or from a connected John Deere or CNH account
  5. Check the automatic image quality warnings, which flag unsupported cameras, low shutter speed, high ISO, unfixed RTK or an incorrect gimbal angle
  6. Wait for the AI analysis, which takes three to seventy-two hours and reports its status in the mission list

GDPR overview

The GDPR is addressed concretely rather than in passing. The privacy policy names Akson Robotics Aps, CVR 43482041, as controller, states that all personal data is processed in accordance with the GDPR and the Danish Data Protection Act, lists the legal bases relied on, sets out the rights of access, rectification, erasure, objection, restriction and portability, and names Datatilsynet as the supervisory authority. Schedule 1 of the terms is a full processing agreement: documented instructions, technical and organisational measures, staff confidentiality, breach notification without undue delay, assistance with data subject requests, deletion or return at the end of the contract, and a right of audit. Transfers outside the EEA are permitted under the European Commission's standard contractual clauses. No sub-processor list is published.

Who owns the data?

The terms and conditions are explicit: the customer keeps ownership of its Customer Data, including the images and field information it uploads. Akson Robotics receives a worldwide, limited-term licence to host, copy, use, transmit and display that data in order to run the service. Everything derived from the operation of the platform stays with the vendor: the software, system performance data, usage analytics, the machine learning models and algorithms, and any aggregated or de-identified outputs and insights. Akson Robotics undertakes not to disclose a customer's non-aggregated data to other customers except where the service, the contract or the law requires it.

Reuse rights

Customers may use the maps and exports they generate freely in their own operations, since they retain ownership of their data and no clause restricts internal reuse; the terms only remind them that they alone are responsible for the conclusions they draw from the maps. The reverse direction is more open than many buyers will expect: clause 9 lets Akson Robotics access, analyse and compile customer data, including maps, images and uploads, in order to develop, train and improve its services, products, features and models. No opt-out from that training is documented anywhere, and the vendor does not state that one is unavailable. Customers are also barred from submitting special-category or criminal-offence personal data without prior written agreement, and are asked to avoid uploading imagery containing identifiable people.

No fixed retention period is published. The privacy policy states only that information is kept for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes it was collected for, including legal, accounting and reporting obligations, and that the criteria used are the nature and sensitivity of the data, the purposes and the potential harm from unauthorised use. For data processed on the customer's behalf, Schedule 1 sets the duration as the term of the contract plus a reasonable period to transfer or delete it. Hosting summary

Nothing is declared. Neither the terms, the privacy policy nor any page of the site names a hosting country, a region or a data centre location; the terms refer only to "Akson Robotics's data centres" without locating them. What the privacy policy does say is that collected data may be transferred to and stored at a destination outside the European Economic Area, and processed by staff operating outside the EEA, with the European Commission's standard contractual clauses cited as the safeguard. That is a transfer clause, not a hosting statement, and it should not be read as one. The only jurisdictional anchors that are certain are the vendor's own: Akson Robotics ApS is registered in Denmark under CVR 43482041, the contract is governed by Danish law with the Danish courts having non-exclusive jurisdiction, and Datatilsynet is named as the supervisory authority. You need a supported mapping drone and correct camera settings, since the platform rejects or flags images taken with unfixed RTK, low shutter speed, high ISO, digital zoom or an incorrect gimbal angle. Do I need to own a drone?

Should you pick CropUp?
