What is Chatmate AI?
Chatmate AI is a conversational companion service built around artificial characters that its Swiss publisher, BENPIRE GmbH, presents as artificial people with simulated lives and emotions. The product lives less on its own website than inside a messaging app: you send a message to a WhatsApp number, or write to the Telegram bot, and the conversation starts at once. There is nothing to install and no account to create. Instagram and Facebook Messenger also appear on the homepage as channels, but both are greyed out, and so are announced rather than available.
The website itself works as a directory. It lists the characters, called mates, and lets you filter them by gender, age bracket, height, body shape, ethnicity and hair colour before choosing one. A first-party API call returned 2,373 available mates on 9 August 2026, consistent with the homepage claim of thousands of mates awaiting. Skip the directory and simply send a message, and a random mate is assigned to you.
Each mate is meant to hold a personality and behave consistently with it. Chatmate AI advertises text conversation in any language, dialects included, generated photographs of the character on request, reactions to photographs you send, voice input with spoken replies in English, memory of your conversation style, and unprompted messages from the mate to you. It runs on several large AI models the site never names; the publisher's own corporate site describes the product as GPT-3 powered.
Use is free within a standing weekly allowance of 50 messages and 3 photographs, plus a one-off welcome bonus of 30 messages and 5 photographs. Heavier use calls for the VIP subscription, sold at $9.90 per month through Gumroad rather than on the site, which lifts the ceiling to 600 interactions and 30 photographs a month. A 3D extension called the Mateverse is announced as browser-based early access, by invitation through Discord. The terms restrict the whole service to people aged 18 or over, though nothing on the site checks that.

GDPR overview
There is no mention of the GDPR anywhere on Chatmate AI. Searching every archived page of the site returns not one occurrence of "GDPR" or "General Data Protection Regulation". No EU representative under Article 27 is designated, no data processing agreement is offered, no subprocessor list is published and no data protection officer is named. The publisher is established in Switzerland, outside the European Union, which makes the missing Article 27 representative more consequential for European users. The policy does acknowledge that personal data may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own, and that those countries may have different data protection laws, but it names no country and cites no safeguard. No legal basis for processing is stated, and the policy has not changed since 11 February 2023.
Who owns the data?
The privacy policy, last updated on 11 February 2023, names BENPIRE GmbH as the party collecting your data. It says it may gather your name, age, gender and location, together with the messages you send and receive. You are granted a right to access and correct that information, but the policy is unfinished at exactly that point: the sentence telling you where to write still carries the template marker "[insert contact information]". The only address published anywhere on the site is email@holomate.io, at the foot of the terms and of the policy. No right to erasure, portability or objection is mentioned, and no retention period is given.
Reuse rights
The policy states that the data serves to provide and improve the app, to communicate with you and to meet legal obligations. Nothing is disclosed to third parties except where the law requires it or where it serves to provide and improve the app, though aggregated or anonymised information may be shared with third parties for research or marketing. The terms go further on reading rights: BENPIRE GmbH reserves the right to review every message sent through the app and to remove any that breach the terms. Neither document says whether conversations train AI models, so the question is neither confirmed nor excluded, and no opt-out is offered. As an end user you are granted no stated licence to reuse the service's own content, which the terms claim as the publisher's intellectual property.

Hosting summary
Chatmate AI names no hosting country. Its privacy policy acknowledges only that personal data may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own, and that those countries may have different data protection laws, without naming a single one or citing a safeguard. What can be observed from outside is limited and does not answer the question: the domain resolves to 76.76.21.21, an anycast address on Amazon's network seen at a node in Walnut, United States, serving a statically exported site, and therefore a delivery node rather than a storage location. The application interface sits on a holomate.io subdomain and character portraits are served from CloudFront. The publisher itself is established in Switzerland. No security certification is published, neither SOC 2 nor ISO 27001, and encryption is never mentioned. Where conversations and generated photographs are actually stored, and under which jurisdiction, is simply not documented.

Essentially none. One WhatsApp or Telegram message is enough to begin: no installation, no account, no configuration and no API key. The only mildly technical moment comes with a paid plan, where you copy the licence key emailed to you and send it back as a chat command, /activate followed by the key. Should you pick Chatmate AI?
Chatmate AI is unusually easy to reach and unusually thin on paperwork, and the distance between those two things is the whole story. Starting costs nothing and takes one message: no download, no registration, a weekly allowance that renews on its own, and a paid tier at 9.90 USD a month if that allowance runs short. The character directory is large and genuinely filterable, the multimodal promise holds at every tier, and the publisher is a named, traceable Swiss company rather than an anonymous storefront. The service was demonstrably alive when we checked, its API answering and subscriptions on sale.
Against that, governance is the weakest part of the product. Two legal pages dated February 2023 carry the whole burden, and one is visibly unfinished: the sentence that should tell you where to exercise your access rights still contains a template placeholder. There is no GDPR mention, no retention period, no subprocessor list and no EU representative, from a publisher based outside the Union. The terms reserve the right to read every message, on a service whose appeal is intimacy. The 18-and-over rule is stated, then left entirely to the honour system.
Two further things deserve a careful look before committing.
