Rumi is a solar-powered GPS collar and monitoring platform for cattle, built by the Spanish agtech company Innogando. It tracks rumination, activity and location over its own LoRaWAN network, flagging heat, illness and calving before they become visible.
What is Rumi?
Rumi is a precision livestock system built by Innogando SL, a Galician agtech company based in Lugo and entered in the commercial register in June 2020. It combines three things: a connected collar worn by the cow, a LoRaWAN antenna network installed on the holding, and a web platform with a mobile app.
The collar's central measurement is rumination, tracked in real time around the clock. Innogando makes a point of ignoring secondary signals such as temperature and concentrating on that one indicator, alongside five activities: rest time, grazing time, step count, play time and feeding time. From those patterns the system detects heat automatically and warns of illness, with a claimed lead of up to 48 hours before clinical symptoms become visible. A recent addition detects heat through proximity to the bull, following his activity and the time he spends with each cow independently of GPS and at very low power, which also timestamps mating. Difficult calvings, stress peaks, abnormally low activity and escapes each raise their own alert.
Connectivity is the structural argument. Because the collars talk over a LoRaWAN network that Innogando installs on the farm, they work where there is no mobile signal, and location requests are unlimited at no surcharge.
Three configurations exist. RUMI Beef carries a solar panel and reports position as often as every ten minutes, with no battery to change. RUMI Dairy is lighter, built for housed herds, runs five to seven years on its battery and integrates with the Uniform and Gando dairy platforms. RUMI PRO adds virtual fencing: you trace a perimeter on the map, the collar warns the animal with a rising tone and then a low-power correction, and the herd learns the boundary in four to seven days.
The Rumi app carries an AI filter that understands natural language, so you type or dictate what you are looking for and it filters the animals, alongside a live satellite map, automatic herd analytics and field-notebook integration. The terms describe the underlying technology as predictive algorithms whose accuracy is probabilistic, and explicitly disclaim any veterinary role.

The product FAQ states plainly that cost depends on the number of animals, the characteristics of the holding and the features selected, and that a personalised proposal follows a demonstration. Several figures published on the site are not the product price and should not be read as one: EUR 550 to replace an antenna or unit lost or destroyed, EUR 0.26 per kilometre of call-out travel plus labour, allowances and materials, and the EUR 20 to 50 the site attributes to a battery change on competing collars. Included at no additional charge are the mobile app, the coverage map, the pre-purchase farm survey and future algorithm improvements. RUMI PRO adds a five-year warranty covering app maintenance, improvements and technical support. In Spain the purchase may be subsidised through the Kit Digital scheme, Innogando being an accredited Agente Digitalizador.

GDPR overview
GDPR compliance is stated in concrete terms. The privacy policy names Innogando SL as controller, gives a postal address, telephone and email, and commits to technical and organisational measures appropriate to the risk under Regulation (EU) 2016/679; the RUMI terms add Spain's Ley Organica 3/2018. Data subjects are told they may request access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability, withdraw consent and complain to a supervisory authority, in writing to the controller's address. The legal bases are consent and performance of the contract. Transfers outside the EEA, chiefly to the United States for website service providers, rely on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses. Two gaps stand out: the data protection officer line is left blank, and processors are described only by category, never named.
Who owns the data?
The terms are explicit on ownership. All rights in the RUMI software, firmware, algorithms, predictive models, designs, documentation, trademarks and interfaces belong exclusively to Innogando SL, and customers may not copy, reverse-engineer, sublicense or commercially exploit them. Antennas, gateways and repeaters are leased rather than sold: full title stays with Innogando, and a charge of EUR 550 applies per unit lost or destroyed. On personal data, Innogando is the controller for its own processing and acts as a processor on a customer's behalf where relevant. No clause anywhere on the site assigns the farmer ownership of the data his animals generate.
Reuse rights
Section 8 of the RUMI terms allows Innogando to process data generated through use of the system for service delivery and improvement, development of predictive algorithms, statistical analysis, technical maintenance and product development. Anonymised and aggregated data may additionally be used for research and technological improvement without identifying the user. Confirmed heat detections feed back into the algorithm, and Innogando presents that pooling as a benefit shared across farms. Nothing in the terms grants the customer a matching right to export, reuse or redistribute the data outside the platform, and no opt-out from algorithm development is offered. Personal data is processed under the GDPR and Spain's Ley Organica 3/2018.
Data retention & training
Hosting summary
Innogando does not say where farm or animal data is hosted. Neither the privacy policy, the legal notice nor the RUMI terms name a country, a region or a cloud provider for the platform. The only adjacent statement concerns the website rather than the product: some of its service providers may sit outside the European Economic Area, particularly in the United States, with transfers covered by the European Commission's standard contractual clauses or other recognised mechanisms. Processing is declared to follow Regulation (EU) 2016/679 and Spain's Ley Organica 3/2018, and the controller is established in Spain, which places the jurisdiction there by default. Two technical observations made during collection should be kept separate from anything the vendor declares: the website resolves to a Google Cloud address in Madrid, and an Amazon S3 bucket in the eu-central-1 region serves a marketing PDF. Neither is a hosting commitment. Buyers who need a documented hosting location should ask for it in writing before signing.

- Alerts are probabilistic, not diagnostic: the terms disclaim any veterinary role and guarantee neither full coverage, nor error-free data, nor detection of every event. Reading a silent app as an all-clear is the main misuse risk.
- Over-reliance can erode direct stockmanship. The selling point is fewer inspections, yet the contract leaves supervision, veterinary care and animal welfare entirely with the farmer.
- Data flows one way: Innogando may use system data to develop its predictive algorithms and reuse anonymised aggregates for research, with no opt-out offered and no contractual right for the farmer to export or reuse that data elsewhere.
- Financial exposure sits with the user: antennas are leased at EUR 550 per unit lost, strap replacement under warranty is capped at 10% a year, and liability is limited to the last twelve months of fees.
- Published contact details contradict each other. The legal notice gives Rua dos Artesans in Lugo while the contact page and the privacy notice still show A Grana in Abadin, and the telephone number differs between them.
- Headline figures are inconsistent between language versions: over 30,000 monitored animals on the Spanish home page against 50,000 on the English one, and 1,000 against 1,200 farmers across pages. None is dated or sourced.
- The RUMI service terms are published only in Spanish and only inside the privacy policy page, with no dedicated URL. No data protection officer is named, and processors are listed by category rather than by name.

Moderate, and mostly physical rather than technical. Innogando surveys the farm and issues a free coverage map first, then LoRaWAN antennas and gateways have to be sited and every adult animal collared. Installation is the customer's own responsibility unless Innogando's installation service is contracted separately, and the terms disclaim liability for anything fitted by the customer or an unauthorised third party. Should you pick Rumi?
Rumi is a mature, hardware-led product rather than a piece of software you sign up to. The iOS app has been shipping since September 2021, the company has been trading since 2020, and its board now includes the biotech group Zendal and the livestock cooperative COVAP, which is more industrial backing than most agtech tools of this size can show.
Its structural strength is independence from mobile coverage. The LoRaWAN network Innogando installs on the farm, combined with solar charging on the beef collar, addresses the two things that usually break cattle tracking in extensive systems: no signal and flat batteries. Unlimited location requests and a free coverage survey before purchase reinforce that. The functional range is genuinely broad for a single collar, covering location, rumination, heat, calving, stress and, on RUMI PRO, virtual fencing.
Its structural weakness is commercial opacity combined with hardware commitment. Nothing is priced publicly, every deployment needs collars for the whole adult herd plus leased antennas, and the contract places installation, custody and consumables on the buyer while capping Innogando's liability at twelve months of fees. Coverage maps are explicitly non-contractual.
The AI footprint is real but thinly documented. The terms describe predictive algorithms and probabilistic accuracy, the app carries a natural-language filter, and two public research programmes, RUMiA and SMARTCALVING, are framed around artificial intelligence applied to livestock. What is missing is any description of the models themselves or of measured performance.
For an extensive beef or housed dairy operation in Spain with poor connectivity and a real heat detection problem, Rumi is worth the demonstration. Ask for the coverage map, the quote and a written hosting location before signing.
