Stratio Automotive
Stratio Automotive is a predictive fleet maintenance platform for truck, bus and coach operators, marketed by its vendor as the world's number one. A plug-in Databox feeds web modules covering maintenance, operations and eco-driving across all vehicle brands.
What is Stratio Automotive?
Stratio Automotive is a fleet maintenance and operations platform built by STRA, S.A., a Portuguese company based at Instituto Pedro Nunes in Coimbra with further offices in London and Singapore. Its own marketing calls it the world's #1 predictive fleet maintenance platform, a claim the vendor makes for itself. What the site actually documents is a two-part system: hardware first, software second.
The hardware is the Stratio Databox, a diagnostic unit wired into the vehicle. Stratio presents it as compatible with all brands, models and vehicle ages, with cable options the company says cover pretty much any vehicle on the road, already fitted at the factory by some manufacturers, and, again in the vendor's words, the only diagnostic equipment using onboard AI to produce more and better data. The Databox feeds the Stratio Platform, a web application organised in three modules.
Maintenance combines Remote Diagnostics, Predictive Maintenance and Automated Maintenance Plans: fleet-wide and per-vehicle views, DTC fault codes with descriptions and troubleshooting steps, custom alerts with thresholds, metrics such as coolant temperature ranges, live sensor readings, and SMS, email or web notifications. Predictive Maintenance follows starter battery and brake pad wear and reports at the first early sign of turbo or engine failure, with detection models announced as ready for hybrid and electric vehicles.
Operations covers Smart Maps, meaning real-time location, heading, nearest vehicle to a customer, geofencing, trip history, route and price calculation, a tracking link shared with the customer and driver messaging, plus daily, weekly and fortnightly hours of service tracking and fuel and energy consumption for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles. Ecodriving scores drivers and vehicles on a dashboard and supplies coaching metrics.
The offer is split by fleet type, truck, bus and coach, with a dedicated North American page. Add-ons include RFID and iButton driver identification, a Garmin in-vehicle tablet, an ignition block relay and Continental TPMS, while the Stratio API pushes vehicle data into existing systems. Customers named on the site include Arriva, Keolis, RATP Dev, Go-Ahead, ComfortDelGro, Ford Trucks Portugal, Tussam and Vectia-CAF, and a 2021 press release claims five of the world's ten largest transport companies as clients.
What it does
- Predict failures on key components such as the turbo and the engine, reporting at the earliest sign of trouble
- Run remote diagnostics: DTC fault codes with descriptions, severity, similar past faults, troubleshooting steps and live sensor readings
- Track wear on starter batteries and brake pads, by date or by mileage
- Build maintenance plans that record mileage and operating time automatically and reshape themselves around detected faults
- Locate and follow vehicles in real time on maps, with geofencing, trip history and a tracking link shared with the end customer
- Monitor drivers' hours of service against tachograph limits and head off infringements
- Score drivers and vehicles, and feed eco-driving coaching with fuel consumption, accelerator pedal use and idling time
When to use Stratio Automotive / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Stratio Automotive is the right fit.
When to use Stratio Automotive
- Fleet managers running mixed-brand truck, bus or coach fleets who would rather work in one platform than in several manufacturer portals
- Maintenance managers and heavy-vehicle workshop planners who want component failures flagged before the vehicle is off the road
- Operations and traffic managers tracking vehicle positions, routes and driver availability in real time
- Urban and intercity public transport operators: Arriva, Keolis, RATP Dev, Go-Ahead, ComfortDelGro and Tussam are named as customers on the site
- Road haulage companies that have to keep drivers' hours of service within tachograph limits
When not to use Stratio Automotive
- Owners of a single vehicle: the service is scoped, quoted and billed at fleet level after a sales conversation
- Car and light commercial vehicle fleets, since the site addresses trucks, buses and coaches only
- Rail, maritime or aviation operators, as none of these modes appears anywhere on the site
- Buyers who need a published price and self-service sign-up, because every route starts with a form and a discovery call
- Teams that cannot fit hardware to their vehicles, or that expect a documented self-service API rather than access granted on request
How to use Stratio Automotive
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Request a demo, presented as a 15-minute call, or fill in the pricing form on the Pricing page
- Take the discovery call: an expert walks through the platform, demonstrates it on real data and collects the problems you are trying to solve
- Receive a proposal adjusted to the size and type of vehicles in your fleet
- Have the Stratio Databox fitted to each vehicle with the cable matching its brand and model; the hardware stays Stratio's property and is returned at the end of the contract
- Check after installation that the vehicles run without anomaly, which the terms make the customer's responsibility
- Sign in to the Stratio Platform and configure your alerts and thresholds
- Set up SMS, email or web notifications and draw the geofencing zones
- Create recurring maintenance plans by mileage or operating time, which then update themselves
- Use the driver and vehicle scores to run eco-driving coaching
- Optionally request Stratio API access through the contact form, or add hardware options such as RFID driver ID or Continental TPMS
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Maintenance, operations and eco-driving live on one platform instead of three tools, a point the CEO of Ford Trucks Portugal makes in his testimonial
- Genuinely multi-brand: the Databox is presented as compatible with all brands, models and vehicle ages
- The AI runs on board the unit, not only in the cloud
- Detection models announced as ready for hybrid and electric fleets
- Checkable references among large operators, including Arriva, Keolis, RATP Dev, Go-Ahead, ComfortDelGro and Ford Trucks
- Readable legal framing: a published DPA, processing committed to the EEA, one declared sub-processor (AWS in Ireland), and a management system the company describes as aligned with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO/IEC 27001:2022
- Data ownership explicitly left with the customer (clause 16.1), with an API to pull vehicle data back into your own tools
Cons
- No public pricing whatsoever: a form, a discovery call and a quote stand between you and a figure
- Neither a free trial nor a free plan is announced anywhere on the site
- Hardware deployment is compulsory, with a Databox and the right cable on every vehicle
- The hardware is rented rather than bought: EUR 250 is charged for each unit not returned within 30 days of the contract ending, which makes leaving costly
- No public API documentation; access has to be requested through the contact form
- The terms let STRATIO use Customer Data to test and improve its services and to exploit aggregated or anonymous data freely, with no documented opt-out
- Scope stops at trucks, buses and coaches, the legal documents are ageing (Terms of Use from September 2019, terms and conditions from 2022), and no interface language is announced for the platform
Pricing & Plans
Stratio Automotive publishes no price. The Pricing page is a quotation request form: you submit your details, take a discovery call and then receive, in the company's own words, a proposal adjusted to the size and type of vehicles of your fleet. Neither a free plan nor a free trial is mentioned anywhere on the site, and the terms describe billing through a Purchase Order whose quantity, price, start date, term and billing frequency are all negotiated. The only figure in the legal documents, EUR 250 per hardware unit not returned within 30 days of the contract ending, is a non-return penalty and not an entry price. No lowest price point can therefore be stated.
Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Stratio Automotive handles your data.
GDPR overview
GDPR implementation is documented rather than merely claimed. The privacy notice states that Stratio follows the requirements of the GDPR and of COPPA, sets the minimum age at 18, and sets out a legal basis per purpose: contract negotiation and consent for recruitment, legitimate interest for contact, security and legal defence. It names the rights in full, information, access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, and rights around automated decision-making and profiling, with consent withdrawable at any time and complaints directed to the EDPB list of supervisory authorities. A separate Data Processing Agreement, published as a PDF under article 28.3 and dated October 2021, adds an annual audit right (10.1) and standard contractual clauses for any sub-processor outside the EEA (11.3). Personal data requests go to marketing@stratioautomotive.com. No DPO is named, and no article 27 representative is needed since the company is established in the EU.
Who owns the data?
Stratio's terms are explicit on ownership: the customer keeps its data. Clause 16.1 states that the customer or end user retains all rights, title and interest in its Customer Data, including intellectual property, and clause 16.2 makes the customer alone responsible for its accuracy and lawfulness. Under 16.7 the customer grants STRATIO a non-exclusive licence to copy, store, distribute, export, adapt, edit and translate that data as far as reasonably required to perform the contract. The platform, its documentation and any derivative works stay STRATIO's property (8.1, 8.3). The DPA casts STRATIO as processor and the customer as controller; invoices unpaid for 90 days or more can trigger irreversible deletion (16.6).
Reuse rights
Nothing in the terms restricts what customers do with their own telematics data. They keep title to it under clause 16.1, and the Stratio API add-on exists precisely to pipe vehicle data into their own systems, with no further permission needed. The vendor's side of the licence is wider than it first looks. Clause 16.8 lets STRATIO use and modify, though not disclose, Customer Data in order to deliver the service, to test, improve and operate its own services, and to generate Aggregated Data, which the terms define as data in aggregated, non-characterised form that cannot be traced back to an individual. It then adds that STRATIO may freely use and make available Aggregated or anonymous Data for STRATIO's business purposes. The privacy notice separately allows anonymous information to be supplied to third parties for marketing, advertising or similar uses, while ruling out any sale or exchange of personal data without a legitimate basis; sharing with affiliates, commercial partners and authorities stays possible. No clause addresses AI model training explicitly, and no opt-out from these uses is documented.

Hosting summary
The contract runs under Portuguese law, with the courts of Coimbra having jurisdiction. Clause 11.1 of the Data Processing Agreement commits Stratio to processing only within the European Economic Area, with no transfer outside it without the controller's prior written agreement, and clause 11.3 requires standard contractual clauses (EU implementing decision 2021/914) for any sub-processor established outside the EEA. Appendix I.c, covering the general sub-processing authorisation, lists exactly one sub-processor: AWS, for cloud services covering storage and software hosting, entity country Ireland, onward transfers marked No. An independent technical check agrees, since the site's IP address, 54.75.199.89, geolocates to Dublin on Amazon's AS16509. The DPA also describes physical data centre measures: access control, fire detection and suppression, redundant generators. One nuance deserves a question before signing: the privacy notice reserves the possibility of processing data outside the EEA given the company's global reach, under standard contractual clauses or an equivalent mechanism where no adequacy decision applies.

Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Stratio Automotive.
- Driver surveillance is built in: real-time location, driving hours and individual scoring. That is a workplace relations question as much as a technical one, and staff representatives belong in the conversation before rollout
- Individual scoring drifts easily. The site frames it as coaching, yet the same dashboard can become a disciplinary instrument. That is a management choice, not a product setting
- Geofencing and shared vehicle tracking links expose fine-grained movement data to third parties, including your own end customers
- Clause 16.8 lets STRATIO use Customer Data to test and improve its services and to exploit aggregated or anonymous data freely, and no opt-out from that use is documented anywhere
- Clause 16.6 allows irreversible deletion of Customer Data once an invoice is 90 days or more overdue, so a payment dispute can cost you your history
- Hardware dependency makes leaving expensive: the units belong to STRATIO and must be handed back, at EUR 250 per missing unit
- Over-trusting a predictive alert is a risk of its own. No false-positive or false-negative rate is published, a missed alert stays possible, and the homepage logos and testimonials are the vendor's references rather than a guarantee of results for another fleet
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Setup splits in two. On the hardware side this is not a self-service exercise: a Databox must be wired into every vehicle with the cable matching its brand and model, the work is done by Stratio's team or an authorised subcontractor, and the customer must check afterwards that the vehicles run without anomaly. On the software side the platform is a web service; configuring alerts, thresholds, geofencing zones and maintenance plans calls for fleet knowledge rather than IT skills. The API needs a separate access request and development resources. Onboarding is never self-service: every route starts with a discovery call.

Should you pick Stratio Automotive?
Stratio Automotive is an industrial niche tool, a long way from general-purpose AI. It addresses professional fleets of heavy vehicles, and its value rests on a pairing few competitors combine: a diagnostic unit fitted to the vehicle, and a web platform that turns what the unit reads into predicted failures, maintenance plans, live maps and driver scores. The multi-brand promise matters here, because fleets rarely run a single make.
The references are serious. Arriva, Keolis, RATP Dev, Go-Ahead, ComfortDelGro and Ford Trucks Portugal appear by name, and the legal framing is unusually readable for the category: a published DPA, processing committed to the European Economic Area, one declared sub-processor in Ireland, and a management system the company describes as aligned with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO/IEC 27001:2022. Alignment, not a certificate number, whatever the SGS badges in the footer suggest.
Two frictions stand out. Pricing is entirely opaque: no figure, no plan, no trial, only a form and a discovery call, which makes budgeting impossible before you have spoken to sales. And the deployment is physical, with hardware on every vehicle, rented rather than bought, and EUR 250 charged per unit not returned within thirty days of the contract ending. A grey area sits alongside: the terms let Stratio use Customer Data to test and improve its services and to exploit aggregated or anonymous data freely, with no documented opt-out. The legal documents themselves are ageing.
Worth the detour if you run a mixed heavy fleet, can accept hardware on every vehicle, and are prepared to negotiate a price rather than read one.
