Claned
Claned is a Finnish cloud LMS that turns existing PDFs, videos and webinars into interactive courses, adding social learning, contextual commenting and machine-learning analytics linking training activity to measurable outcomes. Entry pricing starts at €6 per user monthly.
What is Claned?
Claned is a cloud-based learning management system published in Finland and aimed mainly at corporate training. Its pitch is that a learning platform should combine three things that usually live apart: support for any kind of digital material, built-in learning design, and analytics available on demand. The company summarises this as learning science, social learning and AI-assisted design working together.
In practice you upload what you already have — PDFs, slide decks, videos, webinars, links, even VR content — into ready-made course templates. Anything added becomes interactive: a learner reading a PDF can highlight a passage and attach a comment to it, so discussion happens inside the material rather than on a separate message board. The same applies to video. Around this sit boards, which can be personal, shared or public, plus group chat, private chat, announcements and public profiles.
The second pillar is measurement. Claned records interactions automatically and turns them into Personal Learning Analytics for the individual and anonymised Reference Group Analytics for comparison. The vendor describes proprietary machine-learning algorithms, predictive models and sentiment analysis of social interactions, and markets AI-powered insights and recommendations. A tracking view shows what each learner has completed, how long they spent and where they struggled, which is presented as a way of preventing drop-outs.
Roles are structured as learners, instructors, co-instructors and administrators, attached to an educator organisation. The platform runs on Microsoft Azure with regional instances, offers white labelling, supports 17 named interface languages and exposes an external REST API with API keys, interactive Swagger documentation and webhooks, plus a ready-made Microsoft Entra ID integration for Office 365 sign-in and group synchronisation.
The company traces its origin to founders who worked together at Nokia in the late 1990s and judged digital learning poorly served. Its platform page claims 250+ customers, presence in 40+ countries and 20+ awards.

When to use Claned
- Companies that train their own customers on a product and want to measure whether the training actually landed
- HR and organisational development teams running onboarding, mandatory and safety training across a workforce
- Training providers and course businesses that need unlimited courses, white labelling and per-seat pricing
- Learning designers and L&D specialists who want contextual commenting, assessments and learning-data exports
- Independent coaches and course creators, for whom the €6 per user monthly Single plan is the entry point
When not to use Claned
- Teams that need a native mobile app: no iOS or Android application is offered anywhere on the site
- Buyers looking for a permanently free tier, since only a 30-day trial is available
- Organisations that require a signed Data Processing Agreement, which Claned never mentions publicly
- Security-driven procurement expecting ISO 27001 or SOC 2 evidence, as no certification is claimed
- Anyone under 13, the minimum age set by both the terms and the privacy policy
How to use Claned
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Book a 30-minute demo, or start the 30-day trial that provides five licences without a credit card
- Have the environment set up, with or without white labelling — the vendor states no IT project is required
- Apply your own branding: logo, visuals, custom URL and sign-in page, on Professional plans and above
- Upload your existing materials into the ready-made course templates
- Structure the course into boards and set each board as personal, shared or public
- Invite learners, or let them sign in with Office 365 accounts through the Entra ID integration
- Assign instructor rights; administrator rights are granted by Claned Group on request
- Add assessments and configure grading settings
- Follow progress in the tracking view and act on learners flagged as at risk
- Export results as CSV, or retrieve an API key from Advanced settings and pull data through the REST API
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Low, publicly stated entry price of €6 per user per month, with the full price list published rather than hidden behind sales
- 30-day free trial providing five licences and requiring no credit card
- Documented external REST API with interactive Swagger, webhooks and a self-service API key
- Native Microsoft Entra ID integration covering both Office 365 sign-in and real-time group synchronisation
- Personal data stored primarily inside the European Economic Area, with named subprocessors listed in the privacy policy
- Unlimited courses, no setup fee and no role restrictions on every Team plan
- 17 named interface languages, including less commonly supported ones such as Kazakh, Mongolian and Vietnamese
Cons
- The Shopify store behind the purchase buttons is closed, so the Team plan checkout and the trial sign-up link no longer work
- The company named in the terms, Claned Group Oy Ab, is recorded as bankrupt in the Finnish register since 22 October 2025, while the site footer names a different company
- Legal documents are stale: terms unchanged since 2020, privacy policy since 2021, and the register description still cites a Finnish act repealed in 2019
- Users grant a worldwide, perpetual right to commercialise their Learning Data
- No Data Processing Agreement is published or offered, and no security certification is claimed
- No documented way to exclude data from model training, a subject the site never addresses
- No mobile application, and contractual liability is capped at the lower of the amount paid or €100

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Claned handles your data.
GDPR overview
The privacy policy states explicitly that processing is carried out in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation and the Finnish Data Protection Act. The controller is named as Claned Group Oy Ab, business ID 2422442-0, Konepajankuja 1, 00510 Helsinki, with Vesa Perälä as contact person, a telephone number and the address info@claned.com. Legal bases are set out (contract, legal obligation, legitimate interest, consent), and the full set of data subject rights is documented: access, withdrawal of consent, rectification, erasure, objection, restriction and portability, together with the right to complain to a supervisory authority. No Data Protection Officer and no Article 27 representative are designated, which is consistent with a controller established inside the EU. The document has not been revised since late 2021.
Who owns the data?
The terms draw a clear line between two kinds of data. Learners keep every intellectual property right they hold in their User Content, and Claned Group states it claims neither title nor ownership over it. The Learning Data generated by using the platform is treated very differently: users grant Claned Group and its partners a worldwide, perpetual right to use and commercialise it, including processing it, modifying it and creating derivative works from it. Where that data contains personal information it remains governed by the privacy policy. Deleting an account does not undo this: the learning history becomes unrecoverable for the user, while the underlying Learning Data continues to exist in anonymised form.
Reuse rights
Customers keep the course material and content they upload and can reuse it freely, since Claned Group disclaims ownership of User Content. Learning data can be taken back out of the platform without asking permission: CSV export and the external REST API let an organisation pull grades, completion states, progress and event-level analytics into its own reporting pipelines or BI tools. Reuse of the platform itself is restricted, however. The terms forbid copying, reselling, sublicensing, renting, reverse-engineering or scraping the service, and account sharing between several people is not permitted. In the other direction, Claned Group reserves a perpetual right to exploit Learning Data for modelling, predictions, internal R&D and academic research.

Hosting summary
Claned states on its platform page that the LMS is hosted on the Microsoft Azure cloud service. The privacy policy commits to storing personal data primarily within the European Economic Area; where service providers outside the EEA are used, transfers are covered by standard contractual clauses or other appropriate safeguards. The API documentation reveals that the platform runs as several regional instances, with separate default, German and Asian environments, each having its own API base URL. No specific hosting country is named in any document, so the jurisdiction can only be described at regional level. The register description adds that collected personal data is not disclosed to third parties and is not transferred outside the EU or EEA, which sits in some tension with the newer privacy policy. Note that the public website itself is served from a German provider, which says nothing about where the learning platform stores customer data.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Claned.
- By accepting the terms you grant a worldwide, perpetual right to commercialise your Learning Data, including the right to create derivative works from it — an unusually broad concession that survives the deletion of your account
- The legal entity named in the terms is recorded as bankrupt since 22 October 2025 while the footer names another company, so it is genuinely unclear who you would be contracting with and who would honour a subscription
- The online checkout for the Team plans and the free-trial sign-up both point at a closed store, so a published price is not proof that you can actually buy the plan today
- The platform records study time, frequency and behaviour on every learner: used carelessly this becomes workplace surveillance rather than teaching, and instructors are only contractually, not technically, restrained from misusing it
- Analytics that flag learners as at risk of dropping out invite managers to trust a model over a conversation; a prediction about a human being is not a judgement about them
- Nothing on the site explains how to exclude your organisation's data from model training, and no Data Processing Agreement is offered, which will block procurement in regulated environments
- Terms from 2020, a privacy policy from 2021 and a register description citing a law repealed in 2019 mean the rules you accept may not describe how the service actually operates now
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Low. Claned presents setup as a plug-and-play exercise rather than an IT project: the vendor states it can configure the environment for you, with or without white labelling, and that no system development is required. Onboarding is included on every Team plan. Technical effort only appears if you choose to connect Claned to your own systems, either through the REST API — which needs an API key and some familiarity with HTTP requests — or through the Entra ID integration. On-premise Active Directory is the one case the vendor says must be assessed individually.

Should you pick Claned?
Claned is a credible, mature corporate LMS with a genuinely distinctive angle: instead of treating analytics as a dashboard bolted onto a course player, it built the product around learning data from the start. Contextual commenting inside materials, anonymised reference-group analytics and predictive modelling are real differentiators, and the published price list, documented REST API and Entra ID integration make it unusually transparent and unusually easy to fit into an existing stack for a tool at this price point.
The artificial intelligence here is an accelerator rather than the headline. Claned uses machine learning to surface insights, recommendations and predictions about how people are learning; it is not a generative course-authoring tool, and buyers arriving with that expectation should calibrate accordingly.
The serious reservations are corporate rather than functional. The company named in the terms as the owner of the platform, Claned Group Oy Ab, has been recorded as bankrupt in the Finnish trade register since 22 October 2025, while every page footer now carries a different company, Learning Intelligence Group LIG Oy. The Shopify store behind the purchase buttons and the free-trial sign-up returns a store-unavailable page. Against that, the platform and its API respond normally and the help centre was updated in April 2026, so the service itself is clearly running.
The legal documentation reinforces the impression of a product better maintained than its paperwork: terms unchanged since 2020, a privacy policy from 2021 and a register description resting on a Finnish act repealed in 2019. Anyone considering Claned should ask directly who they would be contracting with, and confirm that the plan they want can still be bought.
