Crisp
Crisp is a French-built, AI-first customer support suite that unites a shared omnichannel inbox, no-code AI agents, a knowledge base, a support CRM and analytics under one flat per-workspace price, with unlimited conversations.
What is Crisp?
Crisp is a customer support platform built around one idea: every inbound conversation, whatever channel it arrives on, lands in a single collaborative inbox where humans and AI agents work side by side. It is published by Crisp IM SAS, a self-funded company based in Nantes, France, and claims 10,000 business customers and more than 600,000 users.
The foundation is the shared omnichannel inbox. Web chat widget, email, WhatsApp Business, Facebook Messenger, Instagram direct messages, X direct messages, SMS, Telegram, Viber, Line, phone and contact forms all converge there, with internal notes, canned responses, chat triggers, follow-up reminders, round-robin routing and visitor banning to keep a team organised around them.
On top of it sits the AI layer. A no-code visual builder assembles agent workflows from templates, and the agent is trained on the company's own material: Crisp crawls the website automatically, ingests help-centre articles, Q&A snippets, uploaded PDFs and CSVs, and past conversation history. A MagicReply block carries a configurable confidence threshold so the agent says it does not know rather than inventing an answer. Crisp reports that its AI runs on its own infrastructure hosted in the EU, and that no customer data goes to an external LLM unless the customer switches one on. An internal copilot assists human agents with suggested replies, summaries, translation into more than 50 languages, rephrasing and categorisation.
Around those two pillars come a brandable knowledge base that reindexes itself after each edit, an Overlay site-search widget, a built-in support CRM holding customer profiles and interaction history, a ticketing system with a customer portal, email and in-app campaigns, and support analytics. Chat SDKs cover web, iOS, Android and React Native, a public REST API and a plugin marketplace extend the rest, and apps exist for the browser, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.
The commercial angle is the pricing: a flat rate per workspace with unlimited conversations and a generous number of seats included, rather than per-seat or per-conversation billing.
What it does
- Centralise inbound messages from more than a dozen channels — web chat, email, WhatsApp Business, Messenger, Instagram, X, SMS, Telegram, Viber, Line and phone — in one shared inbox
- Build and deploy a no-code AI support agent with a visual workflow builder or a ready-made template
- Train that agent on your own material: automatic website crawl, help-centre articles, Q&A snippets, PDF and CSV imports, and past conversation history
- Answer alongside your team with an internal AI copilot that suggests replies, summarises threads, rephrases, expands and categorises
- Translate messages into more than 50 languages on any channel, and publish a multilingual help centre
- Run a ticketing system with a dedicated customer portal, plus email campaigns and in-app messages
- Track satisfaction scores, day-by-day support metrics and operator activity, with custom dashboards on the top tier
When to use Crisp / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Crisp is the right fit.
When to use Crisp
- Small and mid-sized support teams juggling live chat, email, WhatsApp and social messages who want one shared inbox instead of five browser tabs
- Solo founders and bootstrapped startups who need a first shared inbox at no cost, with two seats included on the permanent Free plan
- Online merchants running Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop or Magento who want order and customer context inside the conversation itself
- Support leaders who want to deflect repetitive requests with no-code AI agents trained on their own help centre, website and past conversations
- European companies with data-residency expectations: hosting inside the EU, a published sub-processor list, and no model training on customer data
When not to use Crisp
- Teams shopping for a full sales CRM: the built-in CRM stores support context and customer history, not deal stages or a commercial pipeline
- Contact centres that need native telephony, since calls run through third-party integrations such as Aircall, Ringover, Twilio SMS or KrispCall
- Buyers whose procurement requires a published SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certificate before signing, as none is presented on the security practices page
- Organisations bound to self-hosted or on-premise deployment, as Crisp is offered exclusively as a cloud service
- Very large contact databases, since customer profiles are capped per plan and stop at 200,000 on the Plus tier
How to use Crisp
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Create an account from the signup page and start the 14-day trial of every feature — no credit card is requested
- Let Crisp crawl your website automatically to seed the AI, then enrich it with help-centre articles, Q&A snippets and PDF or CSV uploads
- Install the chat widget on your site or web app, or use the one-click plugin for WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Magento, Joomla, Webflow or Cloudflare
- Connect your channels one by one — email, WhatsApp Business, Messenger, Instagram, X, SMS, Telegram, Viber, Line — bearing in mind one account per channel per workspace
- Invite your team into the workspace and set permissions, working hours, routing rules and round-robin assignment
- Build an AI agent workflow in the no-code builder, or start from a template in the library
- Choose the channels the workflow triggers on, set the confidence threshold, then test and deploy it
- Review the exchanges your customers had with the agent, correct wrong answers and iterate
- Embed the mobile experience with the Chat SDKs for iOS, Android or React Native, and automate the rest through the REST API documented on the developer hub
- Watch analytics and conversation ratings to see what the agent deflected and where humans still need to step in
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Flat per-workspace pricing with unlimited conversations and seats included — 2, 4, 10 then 20+ — instead of per-seat or usage billing
- Broad functional coverage on a single subscription: inbox, AI agents, knowledge base, CRM, campaigns, ticketing and analytics
- Clear data posture: no training on customer data, no resale, and third-party LLMs disabled by default
- Data hosted in the EU — Netherlands, Germany, Ireland and France — with an in-house AI infrastructure on Scaleway
- Unusually detailed sub-processor list, naming each vendor's own location and where customer data actually sits
- A permanent free plan plus a 14-day trial of every feature without a credit card, and 50% off for nonprofits and students
- Self-funded European vendor with no venture capital on board, EU AI Act roles and a DPA already written into the terms
Cons
- No security certification is published: neither SOC 2 nor ISO 27001 appears on the security practices page
- No refunds at all — monthly or annual — and the current month stays due when a subscription is cancelled
- Included AI credits are capped by tier at 0, 5, 25 and 75 US dollars, so heavy automation costs extra
- Customer profiles are capped per plan at 100, 5,000, 50,000 and 200,000
- One account per social channel per workspace unless higher limits are purchased, which constrains multi-brand setups
- Prices are displayed in US dollars excluding VAT, and annual billing can only be switched on after subscribing, from the Plans page
- No public self-serve demo page, no stated minimum age, and telephony only through third-party integrations
Pricing & Plans
Crisp offers a permanent free plan, described as free forever, which includes two seats and 100 customer profiles but no AI credits. The lowest paid entry point is the Mini plan at 45.00 USD per month, billed per workspace rather than per user. Every new account also receives a 14-day trial of all features without a credit card. Displayed prices exclude VAT, and annual billing can be enabled from the Plans page once a subscription is active.

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Crisp handles your data.
GDPR overview
GDPR implementation is concrete and documented. Crisp IM SAS is established in France, so no Article 27 representative is required or named. A Data Protection Officer is reachable at dpo@crisp.chat, at the Nantes head office and by phone. The privacy statement, last updated 15 July 2026, is published in English and French and names Crisp as an Article 28 processor for customer contacts; the Data Processing Agreement is part of the terms and downloadable from the account. Transfers outside the EU are covered by Chapter V and Standard Contractual Clauses. A dated sub-processor list is public. Data-subject rights are enumerated, exercisable from the account page or via the DPO, with the CNIL named as supervisory authority and the Nantes courts as forum. Breach notification and EU AI Act roles are also addressed in the terms.
Who owns the data?
The terms of service are explicit: the customer retains all rights, title and interest in its Customer Data, and is recognised as the party owning or controlling it, including the right to access, modify, disclose or delete information about its contacts. Crisp owns the platform itself, its features, its software and its AI agent infrastructure, but that ownership expressly excludes Customer Data and AI outputs. For end-customer conversations, Crisp acts as a data processor under Article 28 GDPR on behalf of its business customers; it is a data controller only for its own marketing, sales and recruitment data. The software is licensed, never sold. Suggestions and product feedback, however, may be freely reused by Crisp without compensation or attribution.
Reuse rights
Customers can reuse their own data freely: they hold the rights to it, can read the full transcript of any conversation, export it, and reach it programmatically through the REST API and the Chat SDKs, without asking Crisp for permission. What Crisp may do with it is fenced in. The terms state that, unless expressly agreed in writing, Crisp does not use Customer Data, AI inputs or AI outputs to train or fine-tune its AI models, and the privacy policy repeats that it never trains its model on customer data and does not sell or resell user data. Access is limited to five stated purposes: running and monitoring the service, passing data to third parties the customer has designated, maintaining security and performance, providing support, and meeting legal obligations. AI outputs belong to the customer, who is nonetheless solely responsible for reviewing and validating them before publishing or acting on them. Use is restricted to the customer's own business, and automated scraping of the platform is prohibited. Exporting before deleting an account is the customer's responsibility: Crisp declines liability for data irreversibly lost that way.
Data retention & training
Hosting summary
Crisp states that it deliberately keeps data in Europe and uses Amsterdam for its core infrastructure. The published sub-processor list, dated 15 July 2026, is specific about both the vendor's own country and where customer data actually sits. Main servers and most data run on DigitalOcean, a US company, with data in the EU (Netherlands and Germany). Encrypted backups sit on AWS in Ireland. Scaleway, a French provider, hosts infrastructure in France, and Crisp's own AI runs there. Vultr handles email relay and Cloudflare handles DNS, CDN and DDoS protection, both holding no data. Stripe processes cards from Ireland with data in the US, while PayPal Europe holds none. Firebase push notifications and Microsoft Azure translation are optional and hold no data. OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic and Mistral are optional, disabled by default, enabled only on documented customer instruction, and process data transiently without retaining it. Transfers outside the EU rely on Chapter V of the GDPR and Standard Contractual Clauses.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Crisp.
- The terms warn that AI outputs may contain inaccuracies, omissions, errors, inconsistencies or hallucinations, and may be neither complete nor factually correct
- Answers come from statistical and probabilistic methods, without human judgement, reasoning or understanding, and can vary for similar inputs as models are updated
- Outputs may be inappropriate, biased, offensive, misleading or infringe intellectual property despite the safeguards in place, so human review before publishing is a contractual duty, not an option
- A badly calibrated confidence threshold turns deflection into a liability: the agent answers wrongly instead of handing over, and the customer never reaches a human
- Training the agent on imported conversation history can drag third-party personal data into the model's knowledge, so what gets imported deserves scrutiny
- Enabling an optional third-party LLM sends data to providers based in the United States; it is off by default, and turning it on is the customer's decision to document
- Concentrating every support channel in one vendor creates real lock-in, and since there are no refunds and deleted data is irreversibly lost, exporting before any account change is a habit worth keeping
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Low for the common path. The chat widget installs in minutes, and one-click plugins exist for WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, Magento, Joomla, Webflow and Cloudflare. Crisp crawls your website by itself to seed the AI, and agent workflows are built without code from a visual builder or templates. A short questionnaire helps pick a plan. Effort rises when you connect each social channel account, configure a custom email domain through DNS, or move to the Chat SDKs and REST API. Dedicated onboarding and team training exist only on the Enterprise tier.

Should you pick Crisp?
Crisp makes an unusually coherent proposition for a category where pricing usually punishes growth. By charging a flat rate per workspace with unlimited conversations and a generous number of included seats, it removes the arithmetic that makes most helpdesks expensive precisely when support starts working. Around that pricing sits a genuinely broad product: a shared inbox spanning more than a dozen channels, no-code AI agents trained on the company's own content, a self-reindexing knowledge base, a support CRM, ticketing, campaigns and analytics, all reachable through a public API and mobile SDKs.
Its second distinguishing trait is its data posture. Crisp is a self-funded French vendor that hosts customer data inside the EU, publishes an unusually detailed sub-processor list naming where each vendor's data actually sits, declares that it never trains its models on customer data, and keeps third-party LLM providers disabled until a customer switches one on. For European buyers weighing data residency, that combination is worth more than a marketing page.
The reservations are practical rather than structural. No SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certificate is published, which will stop some procurement processes outright. There are no refunds of any kind. Included AI credits and customer-profile counts are capped by tier, so heavy automation or a large contact database pushes costs beyond the headline price. Telephony requires a third-party integration, and annual billing can only be enabled after subscribing.
Crisp suits small and mid-sized teams that talk to customers across several channels, want to deflect part of that volume with AI without hiring, and prefer a predictable bill. Teams needing formal certifications, native voice or a true sales CRM should look elsewhere. The free plan and the 14-day trial make the question cheap to settle.
