Praktika
Praktika is a mobile and web language app where learners hold spoken conversations with AI avatar tutors in twelve languages, receiving instant feedback on pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, with a limited free version and paid Premium plans.
What is Praktika?
Praktika is a language-learning application built around spoken conversation with AI avatars rather than written drills. Published by Praktika.ai Company, a Delaware-registered business founded in 2022, it is available on iPhone, Android and through the web portal at start.praktika.ai. Learners can study twelve languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, European and Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, Russian, Arabic and Simplified Chinese.
Each tutor is an animated avatar with a written backstory, a regional accent and a distinct personality, from the American English tutor Alisha to the Barcelona-based Alejandro or the Mexican Spanish tutor Valentina. A short onboarding captures your level, goals and interests, and the app generates a study plan that adapts as you progress. During a lesson you speak into the microphone, or switch to a hands-free video-call mode, and the tutor answers, corrects and prompts. Tapping your own message returns a pronunciation score broken down by word, covering pronunciation, fluency, completeness and rhythm, with a model recording to compare against. Correction intensity can be set to soft, balanced or strict.
The catalogue exceeds a thousand lessons, spanning IELTS and TOEFL speaking practice, job interviews, presentations, negotiations, travel, everyday life and slang. A multimodal feature lets you upload photographs, audio, video or documents, so a résumé or a street sign can become the subject of a session. Words can be saved to a personal dictionary with a tap, finished lessons downloaded as PDF, and a study-in-your-native-language toggle keeps beginners from being overwhelmed.
Adoption is substantial: over ten million downloads on Google Play with a 4.5 rating from 1.25 million reviews, 4.8 from 161,000 ratings on the US App Store, and second place in the store's top-grossing education chart. The publisher raised a 32.5 million dollar Series A led by Blossom Capital in May 2024.
A permanently free version gives limited access to avatars and features; Praktika Premium is sold weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually. A separate business offer, Scale, is priced at eight dollars per user per month for teams of 200 to 999 people, with custom pricing above a thousand employees.

When to use Praktika / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Praktika is the right fit.
When to use Praktika
- Adults who understand a language reasonably well but freeze as soon as they have to speak it out loud
- Candidates rehearsing the speaking part of IELTS or TOEFL, or a job interview held in a foreign language
- Self-conscious learners who need a judgement-free space where mistakes and repetition cost nothing
- Absolute beginners and people returning to study, thanks to the A0-A2 exercises and the study-in-your-native-language option
- Large international teams whose sales, support and management staff work daily in a second language, through the 200-seat business plan
When not to use Praktika
- Anyone under 18: the Terms & Conditions of 10 August 2026 state plainly that the company does not permit minors to use the application
- Learners who need a certified curriculum or an official exam score, since the publisher presents the app as a complement to a course rather than a replacement
- Organisations that require a signed data processing agreement, a published subprocessor list or European data residency, none of which exists here
- Users unwilling to have their recorded conversations analysed to fine-tune the publisher's AI models, as no opt-out mechanism is documented
- Developers and small companies: there is no API, no third-party integration, and the self-serve business tier only starts at 200 seats

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Praktika handles your data.
GDPR overview
GDPR implementation is documented but partial. The privacy policy of 10 August 2026 carries a dedicated European Privacy section naming Praktika.ai Company as controller, giving a lawful basis for each processing operation (performance of the contract, legitimate interests, consent) and listing the rights of access, portability, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and withdrawal of consent, plus the right to complain to a national supervisory authority. Transfers to the United States rely on standard contractual clauses and adequacy, including the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. The help centre states in as many words that the company complies with GDPR, FERPA and CCPA. What is absent is the corporate layer: no Article 27 EU representative, no data protection officer, no data processing agreement and no subprocessor list, with all requests routed to a single support address.
Who owns the data?
Praktika.ai Company, registered at 919 N Market St., Ste 950, Wilmington, Delaware, is both the publisher and the data controller. Its Terms & Conditions define everything produced through the learning activities, including the inputs and outputs of the generative AI features, as Activity Materials, declare them the exclusive property of the company, and have the learner assign any rights in them. Feedback sent to the publisher is assigned on the same terms. Payment card details are never held: they go to Apple, Google or Stripe. Recordings and transcripts of tutoring conversations remain with the company, which analyses them to assess proficiency, return feedback and fine-tune its models.
Reuse rights
The documents are restrictive on reuse. Application content may not be copied, distributed, republished, downloaded, scraped or sold, and data mining or automated extraction is expressly forbidden. Activity Materials generated during lessons, including translated or AI-generated content, belong to the company, and the Terms state that the learner has no right to use them beyond what those Terms allow. In practice a learner can review lessons inside the app and download completed ones as PDF for personal revision, but nothing in the published documents grants permission to republish, resell or otherwise exploit conversations, corrections or generated material. Personal data itself can be accessed or erased on written request to support@praktika.ai.

Hosting summary
No hosting provider and no data centre is named anywhere on the site. The privacy policy indicates that information is processed at the company's operating offices and wherever the parties involved in the processing are located, and its transfer table lists two destinations: the United States, covered by standard contractual clauses and by adequacy for recipients certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and its UK extension, and the European Economic Area, covered by UK adequacy. Learners outside those jurisdictions should assume their data crosses borders. The Google Play data safety card adds that data is encrypted in transit and states that none is shared with third parties. The website itself is served through Amazon CloudFront, whose edge node answered from Italy on the day of collection; that is a content delivery point and says nothing about where learner data is actually stored. No data processing agreement, subprocessor list or security certification is published.

Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Praktika.
- Lesson recordings and transcripts are analysed to fine-tune the publisher's AI models under a legitimate-interest basis, with no documented opt-out: anything rehearsed aloud, including professional or personal material, feeds that process
- The published minimum age contradicts itself, 18 in the Terms and privacy policy against 13 in the help centre and a 4+ or PEGI 3 store rating, so parents cannot rely on the app's own signals
- Everything generated during lessons, including the outputs of the generative AI features, is declared the exclusive property of the company, with the learner assigning any rights
- Subscriptions renew automatically and are non-refundable by default, while the real prices are visible only in the stores or after onboarding and change with the region
- The Terms impose individual arbitration and waive class actions; opting out requires an email sent within thirty days of first use
- Uninstalling the application does not delete the account: erasure only happens after a written request, and no retention period is quantified anywhere
- Fluency built with an endlessly patient machine can flatter: the avatar never interrupts, never loses the thread and never misunderstands an accent the way a stranger does, and the publisher itself frames the app as a complement to human practice rather than a substitute
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Very low. There is nothing to install beyond the app itself, or nothing at all if you use the web portal, and no integration to configure. A conversational onboarding of a few minutes captures your level, goals and interests, and the study plan follows automatically. An account can be created straight from an App Store or Play Store identity. The only technical requirements are iOS 18 or later on iPhone and roughly 293 MB of storage. On the business side the publisher explicitly promises deployment without integration work; administrators register through a web portal and pay by card.

Should you pick Praktika?
Praktika occupies a clear niche: it is a place to speak, not a course. Everything in the product serves that one purpose, from avatars with accents and personalities to word-level pronunciation scoring and a video-call mode that removes even the need to press a button. For adults who read and understand a language but seize up in conversation, for candidates rehearsing an interview or the speaking part of IELTS, and for international teams whose staff must operate daily in a second language, the value is immediate and the price is a fraction of one-to-one tutoring.
The reservations are documentary rather than functional. Prices are nowhere to be found on the site itself, appearing only in the app stores or after onboarding, and they vary by region. Recordings and transcripts of lessons are explicitly used to fine-tune the publisher's models under a legitimate-interest basis, with no opt-out described anywhere. Everything produced during a lesson, including what the AI generates, is declared the exclusive property of the company. The published minimum age is 18 in the legal texts but 13 in the help centre, a contradiction the publisher should settle. Companies that need a signed data processing agreement, a subprocessor list or a security certification will not find them, and the self-serve business plan begins at 200 seats.
The company itself looks solid: founded in 2022, more than ten million downloads on Google Play, a 4.8 rating across 161,000 App Store ratings, and a USD 32.5 million Series A led by Blossom Capital in 2024. Treated as what it is — a tireless conversation partner that complements human teaching rather than replacing it — Praktika is a well-executed tool, provided the learner accepts that the conversations feed the models behind it.
