Overview

What is Evernote?

Evernote is a note-taking application with an unusually long history: the domain was registered in January 2000 and the first archived capture of the site dates from June that year. The pitch has barely moved since, and it is still summed up in two words on the home page: a second brain, where everything you want to remember and every project you want to push forward lives in one place.

The foundations are conventional and well worn. Notes hold text, images, audio, PDFs and attachments; notebooks, Spaces and tags provide the structure; advanced search handles boolean, location-based and filtered queries; tasks carry due dates and reminders; and a calendar, the Web Clipper and real-time collaboration with inline comments complete the base.

Version 11 layered artificial intelligence on top of that base. AI Assistant is a chat that searches, organizes and enriches your notes, generates content, adds tags and browses the web without leaving the app; Evernote says it was built in close collaboration with OpenAI, whose Irish entity appears on the subprocessor list for AI-powered processing. Semantic Search surfaces notes by meaning rather than keyword, and AI Meeting Notes records, transcribes and summarizes meetings. A satellite family rounds this out, from AI Transcribe, AI Rewrite, AI Text To Speech, AI Diagrams and AI Detector to a PDF editor and converter, an online notepad, a word counter and a citation generator.

The app runs on the web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, with extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Safari, and connects to Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Outlook mail and calendar, Slack, and Okta for Enterprise provisioning. Developers get a remote MCP server, currently in beta, that lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP-compatible client read, search and create notes, notebooks, tags and tasks on your behalf over OAuth, with no API key to manage. The older thrift API is marked deprecated.

Four plans are on offer, Free, Starter, Advanced and Enterprise, the last of which claims more than 250,000 professionals. The publisher is Bending Spoons US Inc., a Delaware company based in New York and part of the Milan-based Bending Spoons group, and the site ships in eight locales.

What it does

  • Capture text, images, audio, PDFs, scanned business cards and clipped web pages inside a single note
  • Organize everything into notebooks, Spaces and tags
  • Find anything again through boolean, location-based and filtered search, or by meaning with Semantic Search
  • Record, transcribe and summarize a meeting with AI Meeting Notes
  • Rewrite, summarize, tidy up or translate a note with AI Edit
  • Create tasks with due dates and reminders, and assign them to other people
  • Give Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor secure access to your notes through the MCP server
Audience

When to use Evernote / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Evernote is the right fit.

When to use Evernote

  • Knowledge workers who want one durable, searchable home for their notes, tasks and scanned documents across every device
  • Small teams that share in real time, comment inline on a note and assign tasks to each other
  • Meeting-heavy professionals who would rather let AI Meeting Notes produce the transcript and the summary
  • Students, who get 40% off a year of Starter through UNIDAYS and can lean on the Citation Generator and Word Counter
  • Organizations that need SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, an admin console and detailed activity logs on the Enterprise plan

When not to use Evernote

  • Anyone hoping to work seriously on the free tier, which stops at 50 notes, 1 notebook, 1 synced device and 1 GB
  • Buyers with an EU data residency requirement, since every byte of Evernote data lives in the United States
  • Security teams that mandate end-to-end encryption: there is none at account level, and in-note encryption exists only on Mac and Windows
  • Developers who need a stable public API, as the legacy thrift interface is flagged deprecated and the MCP server is still in beta
  • Heavy AI users, because AI Assistant applies both monthly and per-chat usage limits

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • A genuinely mature product, continuously developed since a domain registration in January 2000 and a first archived capture that June
  • A written commitment that neither Evernote nor its third parties train models on your content, backed by per-feature AI toggles in settings
  • ISO 27001 certification obtained in November 2025 with the certificate published, plus an annual Google CASA Tier 2 assessment, annual penetration tests and a public HackerOne bug bounty
  • Complete platform coverage: web, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android and three browser extensions
  • AES-256 encryption at rest on Google Cloud, enforced TLS in transit and a public service status page
  • A transparent processing chain, with a published and notified subprocessor list and a DPA available for Enterprise
  • A permanent free plan, a 40% student discount on a year of Starter, and native MCP connections to Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor

Cons

  • The free plan is severely capped: 50 notes, 1 notebook, 5 Spaces, 20 tags, 1 synced device and 1 GB
  • Hosting is US-only, with no EU data residency option anywhere in the offer
  • The architecture is multi-tenant and user data is not partitioned tenant by tenant
  • No end-to-end encryption at account level, and in-note encryption is limited to Mac and Windows
  • Prices are not printed on the plan comparison page, since they render client-side, so budgeting means going further down the funnel
  • The legacy thrift API is deprecated, the MCP server is still in beta with known limits, and MCP connectivity is listed as coming soon on Enterprise
  • AI Assistant carries monthly and per-chat usage limits, and no support email address is published: help center, forum and form only

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Evernote handles your data.

GDPR overview

GDPR compliance is explicit and documented. The privacy policy, effective 1 January 2026, is written under Regulation (EU) 2016/679 and Italy's Legislative Decree 196/2003, with Bending Spoons S.p.A. in Milan named as controller, an EU-based establishment, and no Article 27 representative listed. A data protection officer can be reached by post or through the dedicated privacy form, which also handles access, rectification, update and deletion requests; a regional privacy section covers local variations. Evernote Enterprise comes with a published data processing addendum naming Bending Spoons S.p.A. as processor and covering the GDPR, Brazil's LGPD and California's CCPA. Transfers outside the EEA rely on the standard contractual clauses of EU decision 2021/914. Subprocessors are listed publicly, changes are notified, and customers have ten calendar days to object. The minimum age is 16, and data belonging to a younger user without parental consent is deleted.

Who owns the data?

Ownership is split between the Bending Spoons entities behind the product. Bending Spoons S.p.A., based in Milan, is the data controller; Bending Spoons Operations S.p.A. owns the software itself; Bending Spoons US Inc., a Delaware company headquartered in New York, distributes the service, with Evernote do Brasil serving Brazilian residents. Your content, however, stays yours: the terms confirm that you own the input you provide and assign you whatever rights the company might hold in the AI output, so both your original notes and anything the assistant generates remain the property of your account. On Enterprise, the account holder, meaning your employer, controls the account.

Reuse rights

Because your notes and the AI output attached to them remain yours, you can reuse, republish or repurpose them without asking anyone, and export notes and notebooks whenever you like. On its own side, Evernote collects content, subscriber and usage data, location and IP, device details and, where you allow it, contacts, photos, audio, video and calendar entries. The processing is automated: systems parse this material to power the features and to screen incoming and outgoing mail and shared notes for spam and malware, while human access to your content requires your express permission or a legal obligation. The legal bases invoked are consent, contract, legal obligation and legitimate interest. Personal data is neither sold nor rented, and none of it is shared for third-party advertising; subprocessors are disclosed publicly and include Google Cloud, OpenAI (Ireland), Datadog, Fastly, Sentry, Zendesk, Calendly, Bird, hCaptcha and Google Analytics. Input and output from AI features are not used to train the company's models unless you direct it to. Browser Do Not Track signals are not honored.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Your notes stay available for as long as you keep them: content is retained until you delete it, and you can export notes and notebooks at any time. Once you do delete something, residual copies may persist in the backup systems for up to a year, simply because of how those systems work. Data processed to run the service or handle support is kept for a maximum of three years after your last interaction or the end of your subscription; where a legal obligation applies, the ceiling is five years. After those periods the data is deleted or anonymized. Accounts left inactive for a long time may be closed, with an attempt to notify you beforehand. If an account is disabled for breaching the terms, the fate of its content is decided case by case.

Hosting summary

Evernote runs entirely on Google Cloud Platform, and all of its data sits inside the United States, with sync replicated across US-based servers and no European or other regional option offered. Content is encrypted at rest with AES-256 under Google-managed keys and in transit over enforced TLS, while traffic passes through the Fastly CDN, which brings built-in DDoS protection alongside native Google Cloud tooling. The deployment spans several zones and can fail over to another region should a major outage occur. Test, staging and production environments are logically separated, and no user data is used outside production. Retired storage media are handled through Google's cryptographic erasure, backups are taken regularly and no removable media are involved. In jurisdictional terms, this means US law governs the place where the data physically lives, even though the controller, Bending Spoons S.p.A., is established in Milan and the processing is documented under the GDPR, a combination that European buyers with strict residency requirements should weigh carefully.

Watch-outs

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Evernote.

  • Every byte of data, including that of European users, resides in the United States; weigh that against your own compliance policy before committing
  • The platform is multi-tenant with no per-user data segregation, and there is no end-to-end encryption, with in-note encryption confined to Mac and Windows
  • Deletion is not immediate: residual copies of deleted content can survive in backup systems for up to a year
  • Retention runs to three years after your last interaction, five where legal obligations apply, and long-dormant accounts may be closed after an attempt to notify you
  • The MCP server is in beta, so its tools and supported clients can change, and handing an AI client read and write access to an entire note archive is a very broad permission
  • Browser Do Not Track signals are ignored
  • Leaning on a second brain that summarizes your meetings and rewrites your notes can quietly erode your own habit of recall and synthesis; treat AI summaries as a starting point rather than the record
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Setup is easy for individuals: sign up online for free, with no payment card needed on the Free plan, then use ready-made apps on five platforms, with nothing to install on a server. Connecting a Google or Microsoft calendar takes a few clicks. Adding the MCP server means pasting a remote server URL into your AI client, with OAuth handling authentication and no API key to copy; the quickstart is advertised at under two minutes. Only Enterprise calls for an administrator, to configure SAML SSO and SCIM provisioning, plus the thrift provisioning API or an Okta integration.

No. Evernote states that neither it nor its third-party providers use your input or the output of an AI feature to train artificial intelligence models, unless you explicitly direct it to.
Can I turn the AI features off?
Yes. Each feature can be enabled or disabled separately in Settings, under the AI features section.
Which accounts get access to the AI features?
AI Assistant, AI Meeting Notes and Semantic Search are open to all accounts, although AI Assistant applies monthly and per-chat usage limits.
How long is the free trial, and is there a permanent free plan?
Paid plans come with a 7-day free trial and Enterprise with 14 days. A permanent free plan also exists, capped at 50 notes, one notebook and one synced device.
Is there a student discount?
Yes, 40% off a one-year Evernote Starter subscription, claimed through UNIDAYS.
Where is my data hosted?
Entirely in the United States, on Google Cloud Platform.
Does Evernote hold any security certifications?
It has been ISO 27001 certified since November 2025 and goes through an annual Google CASA Tier 2 assessment.
Is there an API for developers?
There is a remote MCP server in beta at mcp.evernote.com/mcp, authenticated over OAuth with no API key required. The older thrift API is marked as deprecated.
What is available for compliance and contracting?
An Enterprise data processing addendum naming Bending Spoons S.p.A. as processor, a subprocessor list published on the privacy vendors page, and a minimum user age of 16.
Which platforms are supported, and how do I reach support?
Web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android, plus Chrome, Firefox and Safari extensions. Support runs through the help center, the community forum and a contact form; no support email address is published.
Conclusion

Should you pick Evernote?

Evernote is one of the oldest names in note-taking, and under Bending Spoons it has been relaunched rather than quietly retired: version 11 sets an AI layer, assistant, semantic search and meeting transcription, on top of a mature base of notes, notebooks, tasks, calendar and web clipping.

What stands out on the positive side is maturity and discipline. The apps cover web, macOS, Windows, iOS, Android and three browsers; the company commits in writing that your content is not used to train models unless you ask; every AI feature can be switched off; and the security posture is documented rather than asserted, with ISO 27001 certification obtained in November 2025, an annual CASA Tier 2 assessment, penetration tests, a public bug bounty, a published subprocessor list and an Enterprise DPA.

The reservations are just as concrete. The free plan is a demonstration rather than a usable tier, at 50 notes, one notebook and one device. All data sits in the United States, which rules the product out wherever EU residency is mandatory, and the architecture is multi-tenant with no per-user segregation. Prices never appear on the comparison page, so budgeting means going through checkout to find them. The developer story is in transition too: the thrift API is deprecated while the MCP server is still in beta.

The natural fit is individual knowledge work and small teams that want one durable, searchable home for everything they read, write and record, with AI handling the tedious parts. Larger organizations should look at Enterprise for SSO, SCIM, central administration and activity history, and should test the hosting and encryption constraints against their own policy before signing.
