Meya
Meya is a programmable chatbot platform for customer support teams. It lets engineers build conversational apps in BFML and Python, embed a white-labelled chat UI on web and mobile, and hand conversations over to human agents.
What is Meya?
Meya is a platform for building and running conversational applications, aimed squarely at customer support and customer experience teams that have engineers. It is published by Locl Interactive Inc., trading as Meya, from Kitchener in Ontario, Canada.
The product is made of three parts. Grid is the backend: a third-generation, event-oriented architecture that emits both built-in and custom events, lets any of them trigger code, runs asynchronously and advertises event round trips under 100 milliseconds. Orb is the visual layer, a white-labelled chat component with unlimited customisation that runs on the web, on Android and on iOS in embed, chat or headless mode, with a toolkit of buttons, markdown text, text inputs, multiple choice, tiles, a configurable composer and header. Console is the web workbench: a BFML and Python code editor, a visual flow editor, a GridQL log viewer, usage analytics, a built-in Orb simulator and enterprise identity and access management with custom teams and roles.
Two languages drive it. BFML, the Bot Flow Markup Language, is a human-readable YAML syntax with full Jinja2 templating and Turing-complete flow control; everything it expresses is also editable visually. Python 3 with asynchronous I/O covers the rest, with arbitrary packages, SDK class extension and custom integrations or loggers. Development follows a real engineering workflow: a command-line interface, local development mode, separate dev, staging and production app types, hot reloading on dev apps and GitHub Actions deployments.
Around fifty third-party integrations cover messaging, support desks, natural language understanding, analytics and e-commerce. MeyaGPT is the shortcut for teams in a hurry: a bot backed by OpenAI's gpt-3.5-turbo, assembled in about five minutes with no coding or training, fed by a sitemap, a website crawl, pasted text, Notion or a Zendesk help centre.
The homepage claims 74,000 app deployments, over a billion events processed and 42 million users assisted, and names Google, ESPN, Sony PlayStation, Aflac, Qlik and Inside Weather as customers.
What it does
- Build conversational flows in BFML, a YAML syntax with full Jinja2 templating, or directly in Python 3
- Embed the Orb chat interface into a website or into an existing iOS or Android application
- Connect the bot to WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, LINE, Viber, WeChat, Twilio SMS and voice
- Escalate a conversation to a human agent in Zendesk, Salesforce, Front, Freshchat or Twilio Flex
- Spin up a ChatGPT-backed bot in about five minutes by crawling a website or submitting a sitemap
- Query and debug event logs in GridQL from the web console, with sensitive data redacted
- Encrypt sensitive user data and store credentials in the built-in secrets vault
When to use Meya / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Meya is the right fit.
When to use Meya
- Customer support and CX teams that have in-house developers and want full control over bot logic
- SaaS companies looking for a white-labelled chat widget they can drop into an existing web or mobile product
- Enterprises running support across many channels at once, from WhatsApp and Messenger to SMS and voice
- Agencies and resellers, who get reselling rights and multiple production apps on the Partner plan
- Engineering teams that already work with Zendesk, Salesforce, Front or Twilio Flex and need human handoff
When not to use Meya
- Individuals or small businesses looking for a free tool, since the cheapest plan costs 99 USD per month
- Non-technical buyers who want a finished bot without touching YAML, Python or a command-line interface
- Teams needing instant self-service onboarding, as the trial is requested by emailing the sales address
- Organisations that require on-premises or hybrid hosting, which no plan offers
- Buyers who need the vendor's own SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certificate, as none is published
How to use Meya
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Request the trial by emailing the sales address from the account you want provisioned, mentioning that you want to start a trial
- Use the 14-day trial, which needs no credit card
- Create an app in the web console, or install the Meya command-line interface to work locally
- Write flows and components in BFML or Python, or assemble them in the visual flow editor
- Add integrations for messaging, support desks, NLU or analytics in a click from the console
- Test the conversation in the Orb simulator built into the console
- Deploy through dev, staging and production app types, with hot reload on dev apps and GitHub Actions if needed
- Embed Orb on your website with the Web SDK, or inside your mobile app with the Mobile SDK
- Monitor usage with GridQL logs, analytics, transcripts and the user database
- For a faster route, use MeyaGPT: submit a sitemap, crawl the site or paste text, with no code and no training
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Full programmability: Python 3 alongside BFML, with no cap on flows or custom components
- A production chat interface is included, white-labelled, on web and mobile, with no front-end work required
- A broad native integration catalogue, with 52 third-party services listed
- A contractual service level agreement at 99.95% monthly uptime, backed by service credits
- Contractual support response times: 30 business minutes for critical severity, four business hours for high
- Subprocessors are named publicly and a data processing agreement is signed within two business days
- Hands-on onboarding is part of the offer: shared Slack channel, pair programming and proactive monitoring
Cons
- No permanent free plan; the entry point is 99 USD per month
- The Dev plan includes no production app at all and keeps logs for only seven days
- Starting the trial goes through an email to the sales team rather than instant self-service signup
- A real technical learning curve: command line, YAML, Python and deployment concepts
- No vendor certification is published; the ISO 27001 and SOC accreditations quoted in the privacy policy are Amazon's, not Meya's
- Legal documents are ageing: privacy policy from January 2020, terms from March 2021, DPA from August 2020
- MeyaGPT is documented on gpt-3.5-turbo, and the blog has not been updated since November 2021
Pricing & Plans

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Meya handles your data.
GDPR overview
GDPR compliance is claimed explicitly and documented on a dedicated page. Meya positions itself as a data processor under Article 28 and publishes a signable data processing agreement, sent for electronic signature within two business days of a request to its privacy address. Access and erasure requests are handled through the same address, with an account ID and a Meya user ID. Eight subprocessors are named publicly: AWS, Smooch, Sentry, PubNub, Pusher, Google Geocoding, Google Translate and Wit.ai, each under its own agreement. Transfers outside the EEA rely on the standard contractual clauses of Decision 2010/87/EU, and the agreement also covers the CCPA. Two gaps stand out: no Article 27 EU representative is designated anywhere, and the privacy policy dates from January 2020.
Who owns the data?
The customer owns its data. Section 6(b) of the terms states that the customer retains all right, title and interest in Customer Data and acts as data controller, while Meya acts only as data processor on the customer's behalf. The data processing agreement adds that Meya has no right to sell, rent, lease, combine, display, modify, transfer or disclose Customer Data outside the customer's written instructions. Meya reserves a narrower access right for support, administration, anonymised data aggregation, invoicing and compliance checks. The platform itself, its code and its documentation remain Meya intellectual property, licensed rather than transferred.
Reuse rights
End users of the platform, meaning Meya's business customers, may reuse their own data freely and without asking permission: they own it as data controller, and Meya only processes it on instruction. The service level agreement commits Meya to giving customers either the means to export Customer Data themselves or a full export in downloadable formats on request, and the terms give Meya ten business days after termination to hand a copy back. Reuse of the platform itself is far more restricted: the licence is non-transferable, limited to internal use, and explicitly forbids acting as a service bureau for more than one third party or accessing the service for competitive purposes.

Hosting summary
Meya's services are hosted on Amazon Web Services. The terms state that the platform is served from a third-party hosted facility located in the United States, and the privacy policy confirms that servers and the central database sit in the United States, warning users outside the country that their information may be transferred, stored and processed there. AWS is named as the main subprocessor, hosting and storing the majority of user data. The privacy policy notes that Amazon's data centres are accredited under ISO 27001, SOC 1, 2 and 3, PCI Level 1, FISMA Moderate and Sarbanes-Oxley; these are Amazon's accreditations, not Meya's. Cloud hosting is the default on all three plans. Single tenancy, a custom cloud provider and custom regionality are listed as possible on the Partner plan only, while on-premises and hybrid cloud hosting are offered on no plan. The service level agreement adds at least one redundant data store, updated daily.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Meya.
- No vendor certification is published: the ISO 27001, SOC 1-2-3, PCI Level 1, FISMA and SOX accreditations quoted in the privacy policy belong to Amazon Web Services, not to Meya, and must never be read as Meya's own
- A Canadian company hosting data in the United States: the transfer out of the EEA rests on the standard contractual clauses in a DPA dated August 2020, and no Article 27 EU representative is designated
- The privacy policy states it places no limits on what the company does with aggregated or de-identified data
- Contractual documents have not been refreshed since 2020 and 2021, so a legal review before signing is prudent
- Conversational bots absorb whatever end users type, including data they were never asked for; the encryption and redaction tools exist but have to be configured deliberately
- Automating deflection can quietly degrade the experience of the people the bot fails: the platform measures deflection, not frustration, so human escalation paths need to stay easy to reach
- Billing is metered on monthly active users, computed as the greater of unique users or events divided by 200, which makes a chatty bot more expensive than expected; prices are non-refundable for partial months
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Two very different levels. MeyaGPT is close to no-code: crawl a website or submit a sitemap and a bot exists in roughly five minutes. The full platform is a developer product, requiring BFML or Python, the Meya command-line interface, an understanding of dev, staging and production app types, and ideally Git and GitHub Actions for deployment. Several things soften the climb: an Orb simulator inside the console, ready-made starter apps for Front, Twilio Flex, Salesforce Live Agent and Zendesk Support, and hands-on help through a shared Slack channel and pair-programming sessions.

Should you pick Meya?
Meya is a chatbot platform built for engineers rather than a closed no-code builder, and it is unusually honest about that. The combination of a fully programmable backend, two real languages, a production-ready white-labelled chat interface and around fifty native integrations is a credible answer for a support organisation that wants to own its conversational logic instead of renting a template. The commercial terms back this up with unusually concrete commitments: 99.95% monthly uptime with service credits, response times measured in business minutes for critical incidents, a named list of eight subprocessors, and a data processing agreement signed within two business days.
The reservations are equally clear. There is no free plan, and 99 USD per month buys a tier with no production app and seven days of log retention, so the real entry point for a live deployment is the 999 USD plan. Getting started means emailing sales rather than clicking signup. And several signals suggest a product in maintenance rather than in expansion: the privacy policy dates from January 2020, the terms from March 2021, the blog stopped in November 2021, the footer copyright reads 2024, and MeyaGPT is still documented on gpt-3.5-turbo. Against that, the documentation was updated in May 2026 and a version banner advertises release 2.8.8, so the platform is plainly still running.
The verdict depends entirely on the buyer. A CX team with developers, an existing Zendesk or Salesforce stack and a need for genuine customisation will find real value here. A small company hoping for a turnkey bot, or a buyer who needs a vendor SOC 2 report, should look elsewhere: the certifications quoted on the site belong to Amazon, not to Meya.
