What is Pixofarm?

Pixofarm was a mobile application and web dashboard for fruit growing, published by Pixofarm GmbH of Vienna, Austria. It set out to replace manual sampling in the orchard with measurements taken on a phone. The grower photographed trees with the app, and computer vision returned a fruit count for the block within seconds. For calibre work, fruit was measured with a Bluetooth caliper paired to the phone, which fed diameter, daily growth rate and size-class distribution back into the account.

Five services were sold. Fruit counting produced crop-load figures and let growers check manual thinning mid-season. Fruit sizing tracked growth so irrigation, thinning and other measures could be adjusted. Yield estimation predicted the harvest weeks ahead; the vendor described an algorithm using machine learning together with weather and satellite data to build a growth curve specific to the season, fed by four rounds of data collection that the app walked the user through. Bin Scan returned the size-class distribution of a harvest bin from a single photograph of its surface, before sorting. A Post Harvest module scanned fruit in the packhouse as a tractor or forklift drove through a fixed installation.

Coverage was narrower than the marketing suggested. Sizing was offered for all crops, counting for apples and citrus, and both yield estimation and bin scanning for apples alone, with more species promised. Accounts carried block management, a shareable activity log, weather services, a reporting dashboard, data export, user permissions and, at the top tier, sub-organisations and anonymised reporting. Customer stories were published from Italy, Poland, Greece, Morocco, Australia, Germany and the Åland Islands, and the homepage claimed smarter orchards in more than twenty countries.

The service no longer runs. As of 4 September 2026 the pixofarm.com domain redirects to an unrelated business, the web.pixofarm.com application host does not resolve, and both the iOS and Android listings have been withdrawn. What is described here was collected from the publisher's surviving Webflow site and checked against archived captures of the original domain.

GDPR overview

The privacy policy carried a dedicated section titled Summary of Your Rights under GDPR, listing access, deletion, correction, information, restriction, portability, objection and the right to complain to a supervisory authority. It went further than most on automated decision-making, promising human intervention, the chance to state a point of view and an explanation, subject to the three standard exceptions of contract, legal authorisation and explicit consent, and it described safeguards applied to profiling. Requests went to office@pixofarm.com or to the Vienna address. Three gaps stand out: no data protection officer was ever named, the policy bore no effective date, and no legal basis was stated per processing purpose. As an Austrian company, Pixofarm GmbH fell directly under the GDPR, so no Article 27 representative was required.

Who owns the data?

Pixofarm GmbH stated plainly that growers kept ownership of what they entered: the data you enter through our Service is your data. The company undertook never to sell personal data, and the terms extended that promise to farm data, in both cases unless the user gave explicit consent. Two reservations narrowed this. Joining the network granted Pixofarm the right to anonymise customer data and reuse it to improve what it offered members. Separately, any content sent to the company came with a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free and transferable licence to store, adapt and reuse it, including for promotion. Ownership therefore stayed with the grower, while broad reuse rights sat with the vendor.

Reuse rights

The published documents governed what Pixofarm could do with grower data rather than granting growers rights over anyone else's. Growers could view and edit their own records by signing into their account, and paid plans included a data export, so results could be taken out and reused freely in a farm's own budgeting, logistics or commercial work without asking permission. Nothing restricted a grower's use of their own measurements. In the other direction the vendor collected registration details, device identifiers, usage statistics and, notably, the location attached to each photograph of a crop. It reserved the right to share non-identifying information with third parties and used an unnamed third-party analytics tool to compute forecasts. No reuse licence was granted to users over Pixofarm's own software, branding or algorithms, which the terms kept firmly closed.

Pixofarm kept data for as long as it needed to provide the service, or for as long as the user permitted. After an account was terminated the company said it might delete the information after thirty days, but explicitly stated it was under no obligation to do so. It also warned that original, unrevised records could survive an update, and that residual copies might remain in backups and databases. Aggregated data derived from personal information could still be used after deletion, provided it no longer identified the individual. No retention period was ever quantified for any specific category of data, and no automatic purge was promised.

Hosting summary

Pixofarm published nothing about where customer data lived. No hosting country, region, data centre or cloud provider is named anywhere in the privacy policy, the terms or the imprint, and the site carried no trust or security page. Targeted searches of every collected page returned nothing. The company did acknowledge using third parties in general terms, describing contractors, web hosts and others, and said it relied on an unnamed third-party analytics tool to compute forecasts, but it never published a list of subcontractors and offered no data processing agreement. The only firm jurisdictional anchors are legal rather than technical: Pixofarm GmbH was registered in Vienna, the terms specified Austrian law and Vienna as the place of jurisdiction, and the company therefore fell directly under the GDPR. The server address resolved at review time belongs to a Cloudflare anycast node and indicates no hosting country whatsoever.

Software setup was trivial: download the app, create an account and declare your orchard blocks. No technical skill was required and nothing had to be integrated, since there was no API. The real friction was practical rather than technical. Sizing and yield estimation required buying and pairing one of only two supported Bluetooth calipers, and a reliable forecast demanded four disciplined rounds of field collection across the season. Assisted onboarding and support were included from the Starter plan, with specialised onboarding for large groups at Enterprise level.
