Overview

What is Mapify?

Mapify is an AI mind map summariser published by SUPERMIND PTE. LIMITED, a Singapore company; its own FAQ describes the product as developed by Xmind. The premise is simple: hand it a piece of content in almost any format and it returns a structured, editable mind map in seconds.

The range of accepted inputs is what sets it apart. PDFs and office documents, YouTube videos, web page URLs, podcasts, audio files and meeting recordings, long pasted text, photographs, charts and scanned notes, PowerPoint decks, Excel files and Markdown all go in the same way. Sixteen dedicated summarisers sit in the footer, from a research paper summariser and a ChatPDF to a book summariser and a YouTube-to-transcript tool.

Two modes go beyond straight summarising. Deep Research is a multi-agent system that plans a query, searches across the web, cross-verifies claims and flags conflicts, then delivers two synchronised outputs side by side: a report with numbered citations and a full source list, and an editable mind map mirroring its outline. Its four stages, planning, searching, analysing and reasoning, then reporting and mapping, are shown as they run. Ask Anything handles multi-file chat: upload several documents and images, question them in a single conversation, and open the original file at the exact page an answer came from before turning the result into a map.

Generation is tunable. You pick the output language, an Instant model for speed and credit efficiency or a Powerful model for depth, step-by-step or all-at-once building, a level of detail, a template, and whether web search enriches the map at extra credit cost. Maps are edited with keyboard shortcuts, drag and drop, notes and tags, then presented as slides or exported to PDF, image, SVG, Markdown or XMind, or shared as a read-only link. An image generator illustrates branches on demand.

Everything runs on a monthly credit allowance whose cost varies with the model and the word count. Mapify works on the web, through a Chrome and Edge extension, and through iOS, Android, iPadOS and macOS apps, all covered by one subscription. The homepage claims more than five million users, a 4.8 out of 5 App Store rating and third place on Product Hunt.

Cons

  • No public API and no developer documentation, so nothing can be plugged into an automated workflow

  • No refunds on subscriptions, credits that reset monthly without carrying over, and automatic renewal
  • The Unlimited plan is governed by a Fair Use Policy allowing throttling, model downgrades and feature limits
  • Nothing is published about data residency: no hosting country, no region, no DPA, no subprocessor list, no Article 27 representative
  • Access is limited to a closed list of 162 territories; China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia and Vietnam are absent even though the interface exists in their languages

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Mapify handles your data.

GDPR overview

The privacy notice, last updated 24 January 2025, devotes a dedicated section to users in the EU and the UK and names the legal bases it relies on under the GDPR and UK GDPR: consent, legitimate interests, legal obligations and vital interests. It lists rights of access and copy, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection, the right to withdraw consent, and the right to complain to a member state supervisory authority, the UK ICO or the Swiss federal commissioner. Concrete gaps remain: no Article 27 EU representative is designated, no data protection officer is named, hi@mapify.so is the only contact, and there is no DPA, no subprocessor list, no standard contractual clauses and no statement on international transfers. The pricing page claims ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification. The site never uses the words GDPR compliant.

Who owns the data?

Under the Terms of Use, SUPERMIND PTE. LIMITED owns or licenses everything that makes up the service: source code, databases, designs, text, graphics, trademarks and logos. Anything you send the company as a question, suggestion, idea or piece of feedback, which the terms call a Submission, is assigned to it outright, for unrestricted use and without compensation. Content you post through the service, called a Contribution, carries a worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free and sublicensable licence extending to your name, image and voice. Section 19 keeps some transmitted data for performance management while leaving you solely responsible for it. Notably, the terms never state that you keep ownership of the files you upload or of the mind maps generated from them.

Reuse rights

The licence granted to you is narrow: non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable, covering access to the service and the download or printing of portions of its content, solely for personal, non-commercial use. Anything beyond that, whether copying, reproducing, aggregating, republishing, publicly displaying, translating, distributing, selling or licensing any part of the service, its content or its marks, requires the express prior written permission of SUPERMIND PTE. LIMITED, and where permission is granted you must credit the company as owner or licensor and keep its copyright notice visible. Nothing in the terms restricts what you do with the mind maps you build from your own files: the product itself invites export to PDF, image, SVG, Markdown, XMind and slides, together with read-only link sharing.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Mapify keeps personal information for as long as it needs it for the purposes set out in its privacy notice, and longer only where tax, accounting or other law requires or permits it. One explicit ceiling is stated: no purpose in the notice justifies keeping your personal information beyond the period during which you hold an account. Once there is no ongoing legitimate business need, data is deleted or anonymised; where that is impossible, for instance because it sits in backup archives, it is stored securely and isolated from further processing until deletion becomes possible. Closing your account triggers deactivation or deletion from the active databases, though some records may be kept to prevent fraud, troubleshoot, support investigations or meet legal obligations. No retention period is ever expressed in days or months.

Hosting summary

Mapify publishes nothing about where user data is stored. Neither the privacy notice, nor the terms, nor the pricing page names a hosting country, a region or a cloud provider, and there is no trust or security page. The publisher, SUPERMIND PTE. LIMITED, gives Singapore as its postal contact, which places the controller under Singapore law but says nothing about where processing happens. Two processors are named in passing rather than in a formal list: Stripe holds all payment data, and OpenAI and Anthropic supply the language models used to deliver requested features. The privacy notice commits only to appropriate and reasonable technical and organisational measures, with the usual caveat that no transmission can be guaranteed secure, while the pricing page claims ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification without naming a certification body. No data processing agreement, no subprocessor list, no standard contractual clauses and no international transfer statement are published. As a technical observation with no contractual value, the domain resolves to an Amazon Web Services node in Tokyo, Japan, which is an infrastructure fact rather than a residency commitment.

Watch-outs

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Mapify.

  • Summarising is not understanding: a clean map can create a feeling of mastery over a document you never actually read
  • Mapify says so itself, no research tool is fully accurate, and its Deep Research page tells you to open the linked pages before any high-stakes decision
  • Leaning on a synthesis tool daily can erode the stamina to read long and the habit of structuring your own thinking
  • The terms assign every Submission you send to the publisher and take a perpetual, irrevocable licence over Contributions, including your name, image and voice
  • Confidential documents are passed to third-party language model providers with no published hosting country, no processing agreement and no subprocessor list
  • Monthly credits never roll over, which quietly pushes you to spend them or lose them, while subscriptions renew automatically and carry no refund
  • Numbered citations make a report look authoritative; the sources still need checking, and account sharing or exceeding the Fair Use Policy can get an account suspended
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Setup is effortless. You sign up with an email address or a social account and the web app is usable immediately: no installation, no configuration, no API key, no code. The browser extension installs in one click from the Chrome Web Store and works in Chrome and Edge, while the iOS, Android, iPadOS and macOS apps are covered by the same subscription. The only setting that ever needs attention is device management: an account binds to three personal devices at a time, unbound and rebound under Settings then Devices.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What can Mapify take as input?
PDFs and office documents, YouTube videos, web page URLs, podcasts, audio files and meeting recordings, long pasted text, images, PowerPoint decks, Excel files and Markdown. Sixteen dedicated summarisers are listed in the site footer, from ChatPDF to a book summariser.
Is there a free plan or a free trial?
Both, in practice. The Free plan costs USD 0 and stays available; signing up also grants 30 one-off AI credits with no credit card required, and the Pro and Unlimited tiers advertise a free trial.
How do the credits work?
Every AI action consumes credits. The cost depends on the model chosen and the word count, and is also influenced by file type and size. Basic includes 1,000 credits a month, Pro 2,000 and Unlimited an uncapped allowance. Credits do not carry over and reset each month.
Does Mapify train AI models on my data?
No. The FAQ states that no customer data is used for model training, and that third-party language models from OpenAI and Anthropic are used only to deliver the features you ask for.
How many devices can I use?
Three personal devices per account, managed under Settings then Devices. Unbinding a device signs it out immediately, and account sharing is prohibited, with suspension or permanent termination as the stated penalty.
Does Mapify offer an API?
No. The site publishes no API documentation and no developer pages, so Mapify cannot be called from an automated workflow.
Where is Mapify available?
The FAQ publishes a closed list of 162 countries, regions and territories from which access is supported, with Ukraine listed with certain exceptions. Anywhere absent from that list is not supported, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia and Vietnam.
Can I export and share my mind maps?
Yes: PDF, image, SVG, Markdown, XMind and slides, plus read-only link sharing with teammates.
Can I get a refund?
No. The terms state that refunds are not available for subscriptions. You may cancel at any time, and paid features and credits remain accessible until the end of the current billing cycle.
Is there a discount for students and teachers?
Yes, 30% off monthly subscriptions for students and educators once their status is verified. Separately, an annual commitment cuts 40% off every paid tier.
Conclusion

Should you pick Mapify?

Mapify is one of the most generalist summarisers on the market, and its strength is the sheer width of its entrance: PDFs, documents, YouTube videos, URLs, podcasts, meeting recordings, images, spreadsheets and slide decks all reach the same place, an editable mind map produced in seconds. Deep Research and Ask Anything push it past summarising into sourced research, with numbered citations, a full source list and a one-click path back to the original page. That traceability is the feature most worth having.

Commercially the offer is legible. A permanent free tier costs nothing and requires no card, the entry paid plan is USD 9.99 a month, an annual commitment removes 40%, and students and educators get a further 30%. The FAQ takes a clear position on the question that matters most to anyone uploading a document: no customer data is used to train models, with OpenAI and Anthropic acting only as delivery infrastructure.

The reservations are real and mostly contractual. There is no API. The terms confine you to personal, non-commercial use, assign outright anything you send as feedback, and rule out refunds. Nothing is published about where data is hosted: no country, no region, no processing agreement, no subprocessor list, no EU representative. The ISO/IEC 27001:2022 claim on the pricing page names no certification body. Availability is a closed list of 162 territories, and the absence of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Russia and Vietnam sits oddly beside an interface published in those very languages.

For personal study, teaching and individual knowledge work, Mapify is an easy recommendation. For confidential corporate material or anything requiring a procurement review, the missing paperwork is the deciding factor.
