What is Maximem?

Maximem is an AI memory and context-management company founded in 2025, headquartered in San Francisco with engineering in Bangalore. It ships two distinct products built on the same idea: an agent is only as useful as what it remembers.

Maximem Synap is the context-management stack for the AI agents development teams build. A conversation turn does not simply land in a database. It is ingested, its meaning is extracted into structure rather than raw text — facts, preferences, episodes, emotions and temporal events — and written asynchronously across a vector store, a graph and a file store, so that writing never blocks the agent. Retrieval then queries all three at once, and the narrowest applicable scope wins. Around that pipeline sit three named mechanisms: MACA generates a memory architecture per agent from a use-case description; validated compaction returns a score and a preserved-facts count instead of a blind summary; and IACS isolates memory automatically along a User, Customer and Client chain, so one tenant's context never surfaces in another's session.

The published numbers are 92% on LongMemEval, 93.2% on LoCoMo and 15 ms P50 retrieval latency, measured on an evaluation harness the company open-sourced so the figures can be re-run. Synap ships 22 native framework integrations — LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, OpenAI Agents, CrewAI, AutoGen, Claude Agent SDK, Vercel AI SDK, LiveKit Agents and Pipecat among them — plus REST and WebSocket APIs, webhooks, custom memory schemas and A2A protocol support. It is model-agnostic, and BYOK arrives at the Pro tier.

Maximem Vity is the consumer half: an encrypted personal vault, reached through a Chrome extension, that carries one memory between ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity instead of making you restate yourself in each one.

Deployment runs from a managed cloud on AWS and GCP, with all customer data stored in the United States, through self-hosted, to a fully air-gapped configuration with no outbound internet access. Enterprise plans add VPC, SSO and SAML, configurable RBAC and custom SLAs.

GDPR overview

Maximem never claims GDPR compliance in so many words, and neither an Article 27 representative nor a DPO is named anywhere on the site. What it does offer is concrete. A Data Processing Agreement is available to every customer on request at support@maximem.ai, with no plan requirement and nothing to negotiate. That agreement names Maximem as processor and the customer as controller, and covers subprocessor obligations, confidentiality and security duties, prompt breach notification, support for end users' access and deletion requests, deletion or return of data when the contract ends, and the standard international transfer clauses where they apply. A named subprocessor list is published. No formal certification is held: the company says it is still working towards them. Note also that historical activity logs cannot be deleted by users.

Who owns the data?

Under the Vity terms, you own your content — your prompts, memories and generated outputs — while Maximem owns the platform itself: the software, the brand and the underlying technology. Feedback and suggestions you send are the exception, and the company may reuse them freely. For Synap, the Data Processing Agreement makes the split explicit: the customer remains the controller and Maximem acts only as processor, handling data on documented instructions and never for its own purposes. The vendor states that no one on its team reads customer content, and that on a self-hosted deployment it holds no copy at all.

Reuse rights

You keep your prompts, memories and outputs, and nothing in the terms requires permission to reuse your own content: the dashboard lets you update, export or permanently delete it whenever you want. What you may not do is resell, clone or scrape the platform, or use it to build a competing service — the licence granted is personal and limited. Maximem states that it never reads customer content, never sells it and never uses it to train AI models, and that the external model providers it calls operate under zero-data-retention agreements which forbid training on your content as well. Feedback and suggestions are the one input the company reserves the right to reuse without asking.

Retention summary
Processed memories are kept until you delete them — Maximem sets no expiry of its own — and retention policies can be configured per data type, versioned and audited. Raw input payloads are treated more strictly: stored encrypted for 15 days, then deleted automatically, and used only to replay a faulty ingestion run, never for analytics or training. Deleting is soft by default: data stops being readable and stops appearing in results at once, but stays recoverable briefly. A full deletion is a separate, explicit and irreversible request covering backups, completed within 20 business days. Data is deleted at contract end rather than retained, with written confirmation on request. Encrypted backups roll on a 15-day schedule, and audit trails run from 7 to 180 days by tier. Hosting summary

Synap's managed cloud runs on Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform, and all customer data is stored in the United States. Both providers are bound by contract as subprocessors, with no rights to the data beyond operating the infrastructure Maximem rents. Additional regions are described as in active development for customers with residency requirements, but none is available today. Customers who cannot place data with a third-party cloud can run Synap self-hosted inside their own environment, including a fully air-gapped configuration with no outbound internet access, in which case no subprocessor sees the data at all. Everything is encrypted in transit and at rest: TLS 1.2 or higher from the application, encrypted service-to-service traffic with mutual TLS on streaming and high-throughput paths, and encryption on disk for databases, search indexes, object storage and backups. Two very different answers. Synap is a developer product: you create an account, take an API key and install the Python or JavaScript SDK, and a handful of lines is enough to store and recall a memory. A public Playground lets you try it before integrating, and each of the twenty-two frameworks has its own documentation page. Self-hosted or air-gapped deployment is markedly heavier and is scoped with the vendor. Vity needs no technical skill at all: install the Chrome extension and follow a guided four-step setup.

The performance claims come with an open-source evaluation harness, the twenty-two framework integrations are each documented, and the security page is one of the most candid you will read: it says where data lives, who touches it, how long it stays and what a full deletion actually erases, without dressing any of it up. Giving every plan every capability is an unusual choice, and it makes the entry tier genuinely usable rather than a teaser.

The counterweight is maturity. This is a company founded in 2025 with no formal certification — it says so itself, and even sends buyers who need SOC 2 or HIPAA today to a competitor. Managed-cloud data sits in the United States, so European residency is not an option yet. There is no complete postal address, no contact page and no legal notice; the legal name surfaces only in the homepage structured data.

Pricing deserves a second look before you commit.
