Overview

What is Effie?

Effie is a writing application built on a single premise: the delay between having a thought and capturing it should be as close to zero as possible. It ships as a native application for macOS, Windows, iPhone, iPad and Android, and the publisher makes a point of there being no browser version at all. The FAQ answers that question with a flat no and defends the choice on performance grounds, advertising pure native code with zero JavaScript and claiming that a 5,000-node list becomes a mind map in about a second.

The product shows one document through three linked views. You draft in a distraction-free Markdown editor with syntax highlighting. You restructure the same text as an outline, freely rearranging sections. You then convert that outline into a mind map in one click, adding, moving or deleting nodes before returning to prose. There is no folder tree to maintain: Effie deliberately removes file management, saves continuously, and synchronises across devices, with an offline mode for writing without a connection.

Effie AI is a separate module with its own subscription rather than a feature of the base app. It generates summaries and outlines, shortens, expands or extends a passage, changes tone, translates, corrects spelling and grammar, answers open questions, brainstorms ideas, extends mind-map nodes, and drafts a complete article from a mind map.

Finished work leaves the app as PDF, DOCX, Markdown, EffieSheet or JPG, or as multi-style image strips meant for reading on a phone. Bloggers can publish directly to WordPress from inside the software. Paid tiers add sync across ten devices, expanded image storage, folder locking, local folder saving, version history and custom headers and footers.

The app is mature and actively maintained rather than a recent launch: first released on iOS in December 2021, it reached version 6.1.0 in August 2026 and has passed 10,000 downloads on Google Play, where it scores 4.0 out of 5 across 62 reviews. Separately from the app itself, the publisher's site hosts seventeen free browser-based AI generators — for poems, lesson plans, essay outlines, cover letters, slogans and more — that need no account at all.

What it does

  • Capture an idea instantly, with no folder to create and no file to name first
  • Draft in a distraction-free Markdown editor with syntax highlighting
  • Restructure a text as an outline, then convert it into a mind map in one click
  • Turn a mind map back into a written article with Effie AI

  • Translate text and fix spelling and grammar without leaving the editor
  • Export to PDF, DOCX, Markdown or shareable images, or publish straight to WordPress

When to use Effie / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Effie is the right fit.

When to use Effie

  • Authors, novelists and screenwriters who work on long pieces over weeks and need structure as much as prose
  • Students and academics drafting essay outlines, lecture notes and papers across a laptop and a phone
  • Teachers and instructional designers building lesson plans and course structures
  • Journalists and freelance writers who outline before drafting and often work away from a stable connection
  • Markdown users and keyboard-first writers who want formatting without reaching for a mouse

When not to use Effie

  • Teams that need to co-edit or share documents: no collaboration feature is documented anywhere on the site
  • Organisations with procurement requirements: no DPA, no named hosting country, no security certification
  • Developers looking for an API or programmatic access: none exists and the publisher does not plan for one
  • Anyone tied to a browser or to locked-down machines, since the publisher explicitly refuses to build a web version
  • Writers who need rich layout control: text alignment is fixed to the left and cannot be changed
Get started

How to use Effie

A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.

  1. Choose your platform on the download page: App Store for macOS, iPhone and iPad, Microsoft Store or a direct download for Windows, Google Play for Android 9 or later
  2. Install the application; there is no browser version, so the software has to be installed locally
  3. Create an account with an email address and password, or sign in with a Google account or an Apple ID
  4. Start writing in the Evaluation version, which is downloadable without payment
  5. Draft in the Markdown editor, then switch the same text to the outline view to reorganise it
  6. Convert the outline into a mind map in one click, and adjust nodes to test a different structure
  7. Subscribe from myaccount.effie.pro, or through in-app purchase on Apple platforms, to unlock Effie Pro or Effie AI
  8. Adjust the interface: File then Preferences to change the font, View then Appearance to switch between light and dark mode
  9. Export the finished piece to PDF, DOCX, Markdown, EffieSheet or an image, or publish it to WordPress
  10. If you have been working offline, back up your sheets manually before reconnecting, as the FAQ advises

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Native applications on five platforms with a concrete performance claim behind the choice, rather than a packaged web view
  • Text, outline and mind map are three views of one document, so restructuring never means rewriting
  • Genuine offline mode, which is rare among sync-first note tools
  • Encryption is claimed and the publisher states plainly that there is no targeted advertising and no recommendation algorithm
  • Unusually generous and precisely stated refund policy: 72 hours on monthly plans, 30 days on annual ones, no questions asked
  • Low, legible pricing at USD 6 per module and USD 9 for both, with no seat maths to do
  • Actively maintained, with version 6.1.0 published only days before this review, and seventeen free AI tools on the site

Cons

  • No browser version at all, by deliberate choice, so you cannot write from a machine where you may not install software
  • The privacy policy dates from November 2021 and therefore predates Effie AI entirely: nothing documents what happens to text sent to the AI
  • The site contradicts itself on free use, the pricing page requiring a paid subscription while the FAQ describes a permanent Evaluation version
  • AI is billed on top of the base product, so the full experience costs more than the headline USD 6
  • No postal address, no hosting country, no retention period and no DPA published anywhere on the site
  • No API and no developer documentation, ruling out any programmatic use
  • Small community and uneven site upkeep: no robots.txt, a sitemap entry pointing at a dead page, and copyright notices that disagree with each other
Pricing

Pricing & Plans

Effie is sold by subscription and the site states that paid access is required for normal use. The lowest paid entry point is USD 6.00 per month, billed monthly, for either Effie Pro or the Effie AI module taken on its own; the two together cost USD 9.00 per month. An annual subscription exists, since the refund policy distinguishes it from the monthly one, but its price is not published. The position on free use is genuinely contradictory: the pricing page states that Effie requires a paid subscription, while the FAQ describes an Evaluation version that an installation permanently reverts to after cancellation. Refunds are granted in full within 72 hours on monthly plans and within 30 days on annual plans. Separately, seventeen browser-based AI generators on the publisher's site are free and require no account.

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Effie handles your data.

GDPR overview

Effie claims GDPR compliance in plain words: the privacy policy opens by stating that the publisher abides by the General Data Protection Regulation. Concrete measures are thin, however. Users can consult, update, correct or delete their data, and delete their account, by writing to help@effie.pro. A dedicated cancellation route was added for German consumers in July 2022. Beyond that, the policy names no Article 27 representative, no data protection officer, no legal basis for processing, no hosting country and no retention period, and it offers no DPA. It has not been revised since 25 November 2021, which places it more than four years before the Effie AI module it therefore does not cover. The compliance claim is explicit but lightly evidenced.

Who owns the data?

The terms claim intellectual property over the software, the graphics and the 7S2P branding, but they do not claim ownership of what users write; the EULA likewise covers the software licence rather than user content. The privacy policy states that content is encrypted and stored on the publisher's server, and undertakes not to exploit it for profit, for content-analysis-based recommendation algorithms or for advertising. The Google Play listing goes further, claiming encryption with a key unique to each user so that nobody else can read what is written. Deleting the account deletes the associated data. In practice the user keeps their work, and the publisher's declared role is storage and synchronisation.

Reuse rights

Nothing in the terms or the EULA restricts what users may do with the text they write in Effie: the documents claim no licence over user content, so authors reuse, publish and sell their own work without asking permission. The product is built around that assumption, exporting to PDF, DOCX, Markdown, EffieSheet and JPG and publishing straight to WordPress. On the publisher's side, the privacy policy allows sharing with affiliated companies, authorised partners and courier services for prize deliveries, sharing on legal or governmental request, and transfer of personal data if the company is merged, split, liquidated or sold. Two named third parties process data: Countly for website analytics and MyCommerce for payments. One important gap: the policy predates Effie AI and says nothing about what happens to text sent to the AI module.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
No retention period is published. The privacy policy commits only to keeping personal information for the period necessary for the purposes it describes and within the limits set by law, without giving any figure. Deletion is more concrete: closing your account removes all service information and data attached to it, and the Google Play data safety declaration confirms that users can request deletion. Inside the app, the trash can in the left sidebar holds deleted sheets and folders until it is emptied, after which recovery is impossible. In the event of a breach, the publisher undertakes to notify affected users within ten days at the latest. Anonymisation is mentioned only for aggregated statistics and purchase data, which are described as pseudonymised.

Hosting summary

The publisher does not say where user data is hosted. The privacy policy states only that content is encrypted and stored on its server, without naming a country, a region or an infrastructure provider, and the site has no trust, security or subprocessor page. Two third parties are named in the policy itself: Countly for website analytics and MyCommerce for payment processing, each with a link to its own privacy policy. A pseudonymised subscription identifier is stored in the user's own iCloud account and is said to be accessible only to the app. The marketing site resolves to Amazon Web Services infrastructure in San Jose, United States, but that concerns the website rather than user documents and should not be read as a statement about where writing is stored. The Google Play data safety declaration adds that data is encrypted in transit, that none is shared with third parties, and that deletion can be requested. For anyone with a data residency requirement, there is simply not enough published information to make a decision.

Watch-outs

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Effie.

  • Text sent to Effie AI is covered by no published policy: the privacy notice predates the module by more than four years, so treat confidential material with caution
  • The publisher is hard to identify. No postal address appears on the site, the website name and the verified Google Play entity differ, and the terms name neither a governing law nor a competent court, which makes any dispute difficult to pursue
  • Your work lives in a proprietary app with its own EffieSheet format. Export regularly to Markdown or DOCX so that a lapsed subscription or a discontinued product never strands your archive
  • The site disagrees with itself about whether free use is permanent, so do not build a long-term habit on the Evaluation version without checking what you actually keep after cancelling
  • Deleting an item permanently from the trash is irreversible, and the FAQ warns that permanently deleted sheets and folders cannot be restored
  • Leaning on AI to summarise, expand and restructure can quietly erode the thinking that outlining and mind mapping are meant to develop; the structure you did not build yourself is one you understand less well
  • Subscription cancellation runs through a third party, MyCommerce, or through Apple, rather than through the publisher, which adds a step between you and stopping the billing
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Very low. There is nothing to configure: download the app from the relevant store, create an account with an email address, a Google account or an Apple ID, and start writing. No server settings, no API keys, no integrations to wire up. The only requirements are iOS 14 or later, Android 9 or later, or a Mac or Windows machine. Two points deserve attention: the FAQ asks you to back up sheets manually before reconnecting after offline work, and a failed installation is handled by downloading the installer again before contacting support with a screenshot.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Effie work in a web browser?
No, and this is a deliberate choice rather than a gap. The FAQ states plainly that there is no browser-based platform, arguing that native code on each operating system avoids the lag and instability of web applications. You must install the app on macOS, Windows, iPhone, iPad or Android. The seventeen free AI generators on the publisher's site do run in a browser, but they are marketing tools, not the product.
How much does Effie cost, and is there a free version?
Effie Pro costs USD 6.00 per month, the Effie AI module costs another USD 6.00 per month, and both together cost USD 9.00 per month. An annual plan exists but its price is not published. On free use the site contradicts itself: the pricing page says a paid subscription is required, while the FAQ describes an Evaluation version that your installation permanently reverts to after you cancel.
Can I get my money back if Effie does not suit me?
Yes, and the policy is unusually clear. You have 72 hours after signing up for a monthly subscription and 30 days for an annual one, with a full and immediate refund and no questions asked. One exception matters: purchases made through the Mac App Store or the iOS App Store must be refunded by Apple through your iTunes account, because the publisher cannot process them.
Is my writing used to train AI models?
The honest answer is that it is not documented. The privacy policy commits to not analysing content for recommendation algorithms, advertising or profit, and the publisher claims per-user encryption. But that policy dates from 25 November 2021, more than four years before the Effie AI module existed, and no published document says what happens to text sent to the AI. There is also no documented opt-out from model training.
Where is my data hosted?
This is not published. The privacy policy says only that content is encrypted and stored on the publisher's server, without naming a country or a region, and the site has no trust or security page. The website itself is served from Amazon Web Services in San Jose, United States, but that describes the marketing site and does not tell you where user documents are held.
Who is behind Effie?
The site and the Apple App Store both credit 7S2P Inc., and no postal address appears anywhere on the site. The verified developer record on Google Play names a different legal entity, BFC TECHNOLOGY PTE. LTD., registered at 709 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, Singapore, with a Chinese contact telephone number. The company is therefore Singapore-registered, with signs that the team operates from mainland China.
Does Effie work offline, and can I use it on several devices?
Yes to both, with one caveat. Offline writing is supported and advertised, though the FAQ recommends against relying on it and asks you to back up your sheets manually before reconnecting. Paid plans sync automatically across up to ten devices, covering macOS, Windows, iPhone, iPad and Android, and there is no limit on how many sheets or texts you can create.
Is there an API or an integration with other tools?
There is no API and no developer documentation, which follows from the publisher's all-native approach. The one genuine integration is WordPress: you can publish a finished piece directly from inside the software. Countly and MyCommerce appear in the privacy policy, but they are the publisher's own analytics and payment providers rather than integrations you can configure.
Conclusion

Should you pick Effie?

Effie is a real, distributed and actively maintained product rather than a landing page with promises: version 6.1.0 shipped days before this review, the app has passed 10,000 downloads on Google Play, and the refund terms are more precise and more generous than most. Its proposition is narrow and coherent — write, structure, map, export — and the three linked views of a single document are the genuinely distinctive part. For an author, a student or a journalist who drafts long pieces across several devices and sometimes without a connection, USD 6 a month is a modest price for a tool that does this one job carefully.

What you accept in exchange is a publisher that says very little about itself. No postal address appears on the site; the company is only identifiable through its verified Google Play developer record, which points to a Singapore-registered entity with a Chinese telephone number and a name that differs from the one on the website. No hosting country, no retention period, no DPA and no security certification are published. The GDPR claim is explicit but thinly evidenced, and the privacy policy has not been touched since November 2021 — which means the Effie AI module, the reason many readers will consider this tool at all, is covered by no published data commitment whatsoever.

That gap is the one to weigh. For personal writing it is a reasonable trade at this price. For anything confidential, for regulated work, or for a team that has to answer procurement questions, the absence of documentation is disqualifying rather than merely untidy. Try the Evaluation version first, and note that the site itself disagrees about whether that version is permanent.
