Pointer is a Chrome extension that brings AI editing inside Google Docs. Its changes arrive as native Google Docs Suggestions, each carrying a written explanation, so you accept or reject them exactly as you would a colleague's markup.
What is Pointer?
Pointer is a Chrome extension that puts an AI editor inside Google Docs. Rather than opening a sidebar or handing back text to paste, it writes its changes straight into the document using Google Docs' own Suggestions mode: additions underlined, deletions struck through, and every edit carrying a comment that explains the reasoning behind it. You then accept or reject each one, or approve them all at once, exactly as you would review a colleague's markup.
Instructions are given in plain language from a bar that sits at the bottom of the document, in the vein of "fix all the typos in this section", "make this more formal" or "add bullet points to the key findings". A microphone in the same bar takes spoken instructions, in any of the supported languages. Pointer reads the text you have highlighted, or the whole document when nothing is selected, so that its edits account for the surrounding context.
The published capabilities cover writing style, whether making a passage more concise, more professional or more conversational; grammar and spelling, including context-dependent mistakes; tone, across formal, casual, persuasive and empathetic registers; expansion and summarising; translation across 35+ languages including non-Latin scripts; and plain-language simplification. Document structure survives the process: headings, lists, tables and styles are left intact, the revision history stays complete, and any change can be undone by rejecting the suggestion, pressing Ctrl+Z, or rolling back through Google Docs' own history.
The publisher is UNIT01 doo, a company based in Belgrade, Serbia, and the product is presented by a single named developer who says he answers every message himself. The homepage, footer and FAQ all credit Anthropic's Claude as the engine, though the privacy policy describes traffic flowing to a different provider's API, a discrepancy the site never resolves. At the time of this review the homepage counter showed 5,532,215 documents edited and a 4.8 rating on the Chrome Web Store.
Installation is free and asks for no card. A new account gets five generations, after which the single paid tier costs $19.95 a month. The scope is deliberately narrow: Chrome and Google Docs only, with no API, no mobile app and no desktop client.

GDPR overview
The site never uses the words GDPR or General Data Protection Regulation, anywhere. What it offers instead is a generic formulation: users are described as data subjects "under applicable data protection laws" and are granted a right of access, meaning a copy of the personal data held, and a right to deletion, both exercised by emailing the single address published on the site. No Article 27 EU representative is designated, no data protection officer is named, and no Data Processing Agreement is offered to customers, only the vendor's own contractual arrangements with its hosting providers. The company is established in Serbia, outside the European Union, and the terms place governing law and exclusive jurisdiction with Serbian courts. The minimum age is set at 13, below the default European threshold. Nothing here amounts to a claimed GDPR compliance, and none is asserted.
Who owns the data?
Your documents never leave your own Google Docs account: Pointer only writes Suggestions into files you already own. The privacy policy states that the vendor does not collect your usage patterns, personal documents or files from your Google Drive, and that no data is stored at any stage of a prompt's processing; the support FAQ repeats that document text is not kept. The intellectual property clause in the terms covers only Pointer's own branding, trademarks and technology, and grants you a limited, revocable licence to use the service. No clause was found assigning the vendor any ownership, licence or reuse right over the content you write or the edits it produces.
Reuse rights
Nothing in the terms restricts what you do with the text Pointer suggests: no licence is claimed over your documents, no attribution is required, and no clause reserves any reuse right for the vendor, so the output is yours to publish, sell or edit freely. What the vendor does collect and use is much narrower and listed explicitly: your name and email address, plus technical data such as IP address, browser type and version, and operating system. That information serves seven stated purposes: running and maintaining the service, notifying you of changes, enabling interactive features, handling support requests, running analyses, monitoring usage, and sending marketing emails where you have consented. Personal data is never sold or disclosed to third parties for marketing or commercial purposes. Cookies and Google Analytics (GA4) track usage and can be limited through browser settings.

No hosting country or region is disclosed anywhere on the site. The privacy policy names the infrastructure providers rather than the locations: Supabase and Vercel/AWS handle hosting and infrastructure, and the vendor states that no sensitive personal data is shared with them, only what is strictly necessary, under contractual arrangements. Submitted text first reaches the vendor's own backend at app.getpointer.ai, then travels to a model provider's API for processing, with the policy insisting that nothing is stored at any stage. Transmissions are described as encrypted with industry-standard protocols, and ancillary data such as your name and email is held in encrypted storage. As a network indication only, the site's domain resolves to an Amazon anycast node geolocated in the United States, which reflects content delivery rather than any statement by the vendor. Jurisdiction is Serbian: the company is established in Belgrade and the terms place disputes before Serbian courts.

Pointer makes one bet and follows it through: instead of adding another chat window beside your document, it writes into the document the way a human reviewer does. Using Google Docs' own Suggestions mode is a small idea with large consequences, because it hands the writer a veto over every sentence, keeps formatting and revision history intact, and turns AI editing into something you audit rather than something you trust blindly. The comment attached to each change matters just as much, since it turns a black-box rewrite into an argument you can accept or dismiss.
The limits are the flip side of the same choice. This works in Chrome, in Google Docs, and nowhere else: no API, no mobile app, no desktop client, no support for Word or any other editor. Quotas are tight, and the site never explains the difference between the fast requests it counts and the normal requests it calls unlimited.
