Overview

What is Unshift?

Unshift is a fully hosted website platform with AI-assisted building, operated by Unshift LLC, a Wyoming company. Its distinguishing choice is where the AI lives: Unshift runs no language model of its own. You connect the Claude (Anthropic) or ChatGPT (OpenAI) assistant you already pay for to the Unshift Studio over the Model Context Protocol, authorised through OAuth, and the generation runs on your own provider account. Unshift's tools are deterministic and non-AI — reading a URL you supply, extracting a theme, assembling blocks, editing pages, deploying the site — and your prompts never pass through its servers. The company removed OpenAI and Anthropic from its subprocessor list on 30 May 2026 when it switched to this bring-your-own-AI model, and it argues the result is no second AI bill, unlike Lovable, Bolt or v0, which meter their own credits.

There are two ways in. Open one of twenty-three finished templates, sorted into business, food and beverage, health and wellness, creative, technology and nonprofit, or describe your business in a sentence and let your assistant write and lay out the whole site. Everything after that is visual: click any word on the live page to change it, drag sections, swap images and colours, or use switch mode to replace a section with an alternative layout. A built-in CMS handles copy, images and structured content without redeploying, API connectors pull in live data, and Three.js drives optional 3D and interactive effects.

What comes out is ordinary code rather than a proprietary format: React, Vite, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui, exportable on the Pro plan with a CLAUDE.md context file in the export. Sites publish in one click to Cloudflare's global CDN with managed SSL and a custom domain. Two live Unshift sites were measured in August 2026 at 188 KB and 279 KB, against roughly 1.1 MB for a comparable Squarespace template site. Commerce features let you sell through a Stripe Connect account you onboard yourself, with Unshift taking a platform fee. The free tier is permanent; Pro costs 12 USD per published site per month. The company publishes no founders, no founding date and no funding.

What it does

  • Generate a complete website from a plain-English description, using your own connected Claude or ChatGPT assistant
  • Open one of twenty-three finished templates and make it yours
  • Click any word on the live published page and change it, with no code and no redeploy
  • Manage copy, images and structured content in a built-in CMS
  • Publish in one click to Cloudflare's global CDN with managed SSL on your own domain
  • Export the production React, Vite, TypeScript and Tailwind codebase and host it anywhere
  • Sell products from the site through a Stripe Connect account you onboard yourself
Audience

When to use Unshift / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Unshift is the right fit.

When to use Unshift

  • Small business owners who want to change a price, a photo or a paragraph on their own site without calling a developer back
  • Freelancers and agencies who deliver a site the client can then run alone, since reselling sites built on the platform is expressly allowed
  • Front-end and full-stack developers who want a clean React, Vite, TypeScript and Tailwind codebase to extend, exported with a CLAUDE.md context file
  • Founders and independents already paying for Claude or ChatGPT, who refuse a second AI subscription on top of the one they have
  • People with no coding background at all: the visual editor, the block library and the built-in CMS cover everything the site needs after launch

When not to use Unshift

  • Anyone without a Claude or ChatGPT subscription: Unshift sells no AI credits, so the chat-based generation depends on an account you bring yourself
  • Teams building a complex web application with real backend logic, since the published output is a static React and Vite site served from Cloudflare
  • Organisations that require a contractual SLA, which the refund policy states Unshift does not currently offer
  • Anyone who needs an interface, documentation or support in a language other than English, none of which is published
  • Anyone who needs a native mobile app: Unshift is a web product with no iOS or Android application
Get started

How to use Unshift

A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.

  1. Create an account on studio.unshift.ai, with no credit card required, or start straight from a connected assistant with an anonymous account that has no email or password
  2. Connect your own Claude or ChatGPT assistant to the Studio over MCP, authorising the link through OAuth
  3. Choose a starting point: open one of the twenty-three finished templates, or describe your business in a sentence and let the assistant write and lay out the site
  4. Review what came back and adjust it visually: click any word on the live page, drag sections, swap images, change colours
  5. Use switch mode to replace a section you do not like with an alternative layout
  6. Load your copy, images and structured content into the built-in CMS, and wire up API connectors for any live data
  7. Connect your own domain; you remain responsible for registering it and keeping the DNS correct
  8. Publish in one click, with SSL and the Cloudflare CDN handled for you
  9. Claim the account with an email and password if you started anonymously, and upgrade to Pro when you want a custom domain, analytics, collaborators, branding removal or code export
  10. Export the React and Vite codebase whenever you want to extend it elsewhere, and revoke the MCP connection from the Studio or from your AI provider at any time

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • No second AI bill: generation runs on the Claude or ChatGPT subscription you already pay for, and Unshift sells no credits of its own
  • The output is standard, portable code — React, Vite, TypeScript, Tailwind, shadcn/ui — rather than a proprietary format, and it can be exported
  • Click-to-edit on the live page means the site owner changes a price or a paragraph without calling anyone back
  • A permanent free plan with no credit card, three published sites on an unshift.dev subdomain, and unlimited free drafts
  • Unusually complete legal documentation for a young product: privacy policy, terms, a DPA that applies even on the free plan, nine named subprocessors with processing locations and transfer mechanisms, an AI use policy and a dated change history
  • Unshift states that it never trains any model on customer data and never receives your prompts
  • Published sites are light: 188 KB and 279 KB measured in August 2026 against roughly 1.1 MB for a comparable Squarespace template site

Cons

  • The AI is not included. Without a Claude or ChatGPT subscription the chat-based generation is out of reach, and the real cost of the product includes that third-party plan
  • Prompt handling escapes Unshift entirely: retention and training depend on your AI provider's policy, which Unshift explicitly tells you to go and read yourself
  • The free tier is described inconsistently — three published sites on the pricing page and in the FAQ, a single site in section 3 of the terms
  • Fourteen of the twenty-six FAQ questions have no answer in the static page, including self-hosting, the Enterprise plan, code storage, SEO and support, so those points cannot be checked without an account
  • No contractual SLA and no uptime commitment; service credits are discretionary
  • No security certification of its own: SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 are cited as requirements imposed on subprocessors, never as certifications Unshift holds, and no Article 27 EU representative is designated
  • An opaque company: no founder, no team and no founding date is published, the entity is a Wyoming LLC whose beneficial owners are not public, and a 4.8 rating from 50 reviews appears in the homepage structured data with no identifiable review platform

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Unshift handles your data.

GDPR overview

GDPR treatment is concrete and detailed. The privacy policy, updated on 1 July 2026 and effective 27 June 2026, names Unshift as controller for website visitors, Studio account holders and business contacts, and as processor for the personal data collected by customers' published sites. A Data Processing Addendum applies to every plan, free included, with a countersigned copy available from privacy@unshift.ai. Transfers out of the EEA, the UK and Switzerland rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK International Data Transfer Addendum. Access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection and consent withdrawal are listed, with a one-month response target and a link to the EDPB authorities. Nine subprocessors are named with their processing location. One gap: no Article 27 EU representative is designated, although the company is established in the United States.

Who owns the data?

You keep ownership of what you upload, write or create in your sites, and of the AI output your own assistant produces, as far as the law allows. Unshift takes only a worldwide, non-exclusive licence to host, store, reproduce, transmit, optimise and display that content while it operates the service, and that licence ends when the content is removed, subject to caches and backups. Unshift keeps ownership of its own platform assets: blocks, templates, themes, components and generation prompts, which are licensed for use inside the service only. Under the GDPR, Unshift is the controller for your account data and the processor for the personal data your published sites collect.

Reuse rights

You may reuse what the platform produces without asking permission. The terms grant the code and the AI output for personal or commercial use, so you can publish client sites, host them elsewhere after exporting them, and sell websites built on the platform. Two limits apply: you may not extract Unshift's pre-built blocks and templates to redistribute or resell them as standalone products or as a competing component library, and you may not use those platform assets to train a machine-learning model. On its own side, Unshift states that it never uses your inputs, your content or your personal data to train any model, and that your prompts go straight to your AI provider without passing through its servers. It stores only the OAuth tokens that authorise the MCP connection. Analytics data is shared with Google Analytics and PostHog only after cookie consent, and Unshift states that it does not sell personal data.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Unshift publishes a retention table. Account records are kept until you delete the account, plus 30 days of backups. An unclaimed anonymous account and its unpublished drafts are deleted automatically after 30 days of inactivity. Content stored in projects is kept until you delete it, or for 30 days after the account ends. The OAuth tokens for the AI connection last until you disconnect or delete the account. Billing records are kept at least seven years for tax law, support exchanges three years, access and security logs twelve months, cookie consents twelve months. PostHog product analytics keep 90 days at full fidelity and session replays 60 days, with aggregated metrics kept indefinitely. After each period the data is deleted, anonymised or aggregated.

Hosting summary

Unshift is headquartered in the United States and most processing happens there. Published sites are served from Cloudflare's global edge, with Workers for Platforms, R2 object storage and DNS, and metadata held in the United States. The database, authentication and storage layer is Supabase, in AWS us-east-1. Amazon Web Services handles transactional email through SES and legacy file storage through S3, also in us-east-1. Stripe processes payments from the United States, Sentry monitors errors from the United States, and Google Analytics 4 runs on the marketing site from the United States. The one European exception is PostHog, whose product analytics and session replay run on its EU Cloud in Frankfurt, Germany. Optional integrations the customer connects — GitHub and Netlify — are United States services. Every subprocessor is covered by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK International Data Transfer Addendum. Data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.2 or above and at rest in Supabase and Cloudflare R2.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Unshift.

  • The advertised price is not the full price: the Claude or ChatGPT subscription that does the actual generation is yours to pay, and it is not counted anywhere on the pricing page
  • Your prompts go to your AI provider, not to Unshift, so retention, logging and any training on them are governed by that provider's policy and your account settings there — Unshift says so plainly and hands the responsibility back to you
  • Unshift warns that AI output can invent facts, misstate figures, produce subtly broken code and reproduce protected expression; publishing it unreviewed on a live site is your liability, not theirs
  • Copyright on generated material is unsettled: the site itself cites the US Copyright Office's position that purely machine-generated output is not protectable, and warns that other users may obtain similar output
  • Code export is a Pro feature, so a free account that lapses leaves without its codebase; after a failed payment, published sites revert from your custom domain to an unshift.dev subdomain within 14 days and paid-only content may be deleted after 30
  • Never put secrets in prompts or in site content: prompts are transmitted to your provider under your own agreement, and content written into your project is stored by Unshift
  • Liability is capped at the greater of twelve months of fees or 100 USD, US residents are bound to individual arbitration with a class-action waiver unless they opt out within 30 days, and Unshift does not guarantee restoring any particular version of your content
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Low for most people. Signing up needs no credit card, and both entry points — opening a template or describing your business — take about a minute according to Unshift. The visual editor and the CMS cover everything after that, with no code required. Two steps are genuinely technical: connecting your own Claude or ChatGPT assistant to the Studio over MCP through OAuth, which assumes you already hold a compatible account, and pointing a custom domain at the platform, since registering the domain and keeping its DNS correct remain your responsibility. Knowing React is useful only to extend the exported code.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which AI does Unshift use, and does it cost extra?
Unshift runs no model of its own. You connect your existing Claude (Anthropic) or ChatGPT (OpenAI) assistant to the Studio over the Model Context Protocol, authorised through OAuth, and the generation runs on the subscription you already pay for. Unshift neither sells nor meters AI credits, so there is no second AI bill.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. The visual editor and the built-in CMS cover what most people need, and any text can be changed by clicking it on the live page. Knowing React only helps if you want to extend the production code you own.
What technologies are in the generated code, and can I take it with me?
Every site is React, Vite, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui, hosted on Cloudflare's global CDN. Code export is included on the Pro plan and the export ships with a CLAUDE.md context file, so you can host the site anywhere.
What does it cost?
The free plan is permanent and needs no credit card: it covers the full builder and three sites published on unshift.dev subdomains with Unshift branding. Pro is 12 USD per published site per month, or 120 USD per year. A Business tier at 20 USD per user per month is announced as coming soon.
Can I build and sell websites for clients?
Yes. The generated code is yours for personal or commercial use, and on Pro you publish on the client's own domain with Unshift branding removed. You may not extract the pre-built blocks and templates to resell them as standalone products or as a competing component library.
Does Unshift train AI models on my data?
No. Both the privacy policy and the AI use policy state that Unshift does not use your inputs, your content or your personal data to train any machine-learning model, its own or a third party's, and that your prompts never pass through its servers. How your prompts are retained is governed by your own AI provider.
Is Unshift GDPR-ready, and is a DPA available?
A Data Processing Addendum applies on every plan, free included, and a countersigned copy can be requested from privacy@unshift.ai. Transfers rely on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK International Data Transfer Addendum, and nine subprocessors are named with their processing locations. No Article 27 EU representative is designated.
What are the refund rules?
Monthly subscriptions are not pro-rated or refunded except where the law requires it. An annual subscription can be refunded pro rata within 14 days of the first purchase, and an unused annual renewal within 7 days of the charge. EU, UK and Swiss consumers keep a 14-day right of withdrawal. Unshift states that it offers no contractual SLA.
What is the minimum age to use the service?
The terms require you to be at least 18, or the age of majority in your jurisdiction. The privacy policy adds that the service is not directed to children under 16 and that customers may not build sites aimed primarily at children under 13 or 16 without appropriate parental consent mechanisms.
Conclusion

Should you pick Unshift?

Unshift takes an unusual position in a crowded category: instead of reselling AI generation, it borrows the assistant you already pay for. That single decision explains most of the product. It removes the second subscription that Lovable, Bolt and v0 charge, it keeps your prompts away from Unshift's servers, and it makes the tool unusable for anyone who does not hold a Claude or ChatGPT plan. The real promise is not the first twenty minutes, which every competitor now does well, but everything after it: click-to-edit on the live page, a built-in CMS, and a portable React codebase you can take elsewhere. For a small business that dreads calling a developer back to change a price, that is the difference that matters.

The legal groundwork is stronger than the product's age suggests. A DPA applies even on the free plan, nine subprocessors are named with their processing locations and transfer mechanisms, retention periods are tabulated, and the AI use policy is unusually frank about what generated output can get wrong. Against that, Unshift holds no security certification of its own, designates no Article 27 EU representative despite being a United States company serving European customers, and offers no contractual SLA. The company itself is opaque: no founder, no team, no founding date, and a Wyoming LLC whose owners are not public. Half the FAQ answers are missing from the published page.

The entry cost is low and reversible — free to try, 12 USD per published site per month to go live, and the code leaves with you on Pro. It is a sound choice for freelancers, agencies and small businesses who already live inside Claude or ChatGPT, and a poor one for anyone who needs guarantees, a named counterparty or an AI included in the price.
