What is ThermoHuman?
ThermoHuman is an online infrared thermography platform that turns a thermal photograph of a human body into structured, comparable data. It is published by PEMA THERMO GROUP S.L., a Madrid company that began in 2009 at the sport science faculty (INEF) of the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, where two master's students and a professor started working on thermography. The company was incorporated in 2011 under the name pemaGROUP, released the first commercial version of the software in 2015, launched ThermoHuman 2.0 during the pandemic and ThermoHuman 3.0 in 2024.
The workflow has four stages. A thermal camera is connected directly to the computer, so the shot is taken from inside the application and the report comes back immediately; the vendor quotes roughly thirty seconds per subject. Computer vision then segments the image into more than 100 body regions, adapting to different anatomies without manual tracing. The results are presented through avatars, thermograms, graphs and proprietary metrics — TRI, TSI, skewness, neutralised skewness and coefficients of variation — with neural networks and intelligent alarms used to prioritise what matters. Finally, everything can leave the system as a PDF, a customised Excel or CSV file, or through an API.
Three analytical angles structure the product. Asymmetry compares contralateral regions to surface early risk. Fatigue reads significant thermal variation over time to distinguish localised from generic fatigue and to steer recovery towards cold or heat. RTP compares an injured athlete against scientific reference graphs built from hundreds of cases covering muscle injuries, ACL, fractures and sprains.
The scientific footing is unusual for a tool of this size: 63 published articles, nine doctoral theses, a reference database of more than 305,000 thermal images and a validation study indexed on PubMed. The vendor claims more than 350 clients across 46 countries, including sports performance, health institutions and research bodies. The company is equally clear about the boundary — the software describes and measures, it does not diagnose. Alongside the software it sells thermal cameras, a certified online course and consulting.

- Choose a route: buy software alone if you already own a compatible thermal camera, or order a pack combining camera, software and training
- Prepare the room at 18 to 25 degrees Celsius and let the subject acclimatise, undressed, for at least ten minutes
- Mount the camera on a tripod at knee height for legs and chest height for the torso, around 2.5 metres away with a 42-degree lens
- Connect the camera to the computer to use the plug-and-play controller, or work from images already stored on the memory card
- Take the shot from inside the application; the vendor quotes roughly thirty seconds per person for the whole sequence
- Let the software segment the image automatically into more than 100 body regions
- Read the output through avatars, thermograms, graphs and the asymmetry, fatigue and return-to-play metrics
- Repeat at least weekly, one or two days after intense effort, or before any treatment when following an injury

GDPR overview
Implementation is explicit rather than implied. The privacy policy, last revised on 22 July 2022, names Regulation (EU) 2016/679, commits to comply with all obligations established in the Regulation and cites Article 32 for security measures. It sets out a legal basis for each category of data, grants access, rectification, erasure, objection, restriction and portability, and points complainants to the Spanish Data Protection Agency. A Data Protection Officer is designated and reachable at dpd@thermohuman.com. Article 28 processor duties are published in full, including the record of activities, the confidentiality obligation and breach notification. No Article 27 representative is named, which is consistent: the company is established in Spain. Two gaps remain: no subprocessor list is published, and no hosting country is stated.
Who owns the data?
Two regimes coexist. For customer, prospect, applicant and supplier records, PEMA THERMO GROUP S.L. is the controller and decides the purposes. For the patients and athletes a customer photographs and files inside the application, the roles reverse: the customer stays responsible and ThermoHuman acts only as a processor, bound to follow the customer's instructions, keep a record of activities, impose confidentiality on its staff and, at the end of the contract, destroy or return the data. Intellectual property in the platform itself remains with ThermoHuman. One clause deserves attention: the terms state that any user who uploads content grants ThermoHuman distribution, transformation and public communication rights, non-exclusively, free of charge and without time or territorial limit.
Reuse rights
Customers keep the practical use of what they produce: reports can be exported as PDF, sent by email, downloaded as customised Excel or CSV files, individually or by group, and pushed to third-party platforms through the API, with the key available from the Software, Admin and Client section. Nothing in the terms requires the vendor's permission for that. The counterweight sits on the vendor's side. Uploading content to the platform transfers distribution, transformation and public communication rights to ThermoHuman, free of charge and without limit of time or territory, and the privacy policy reserves the right to keep data for statistical use and scientific research under anonymisation. Reverse engineering, decompiling, reselling, renting or building a derivative product from the platform is prohibited.
Data retention & training
Hosting summary
The only hosting statement on the site is that data is encrypted to high security standards in the vendor's Microsoft Azure cloud. Beyond that, nothing is declared: no hosting country, no region, no data centre location, and no mention of standard contractual clauses or transfers outside the European Economic Area. The privacy policy commits to Article 32 security measures and to a duty of secrecy extending to subprocessors and their employees, but publishes no list of those subprocessors. The vendor also states plainly that it cannot guarantee the security of information while it travels across the network. Buyers with a jurisdiction requirement, and any clinic handling patient imagery, should establish the hosting location contractually rather than infer it, since the publisher is Spanish but the marketing site itself is served from United States infrastructure, which says nothing about where the platform data actually rests.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting ThermoHuman.
- Treating a thermal map as a diagnosis. The vendor is explicit that it is not one, yet a colour-coded avatar with automated alarms invites exactly that shortcut, especially from a non-specialist reading the report second-hand.
- Assuming a normal thermogram means no injury. Not every lesion raises skin temperature: nerve-type damage and muscle discontinuity actually lower it, so a clean image can quietly build false reassurance.
- Letting the automation erode clinical judgement. Thirty-second scans and prioritised alarms make it tempting to stop palpating, stop asking and let the software decide who trains, particularly under time pressure during a congested match week.
- Uploading patient and athlete body imagery to a platform that names no hosting country or region, publishes no subprocessor list and holds no security certification, while the customer remains the controller and carries that responsibility.
- Overlooking the content clause: uploading material to the platform grants the vendor distribution, transformation and public communication rights, non-exclusively, free of charge and without limit of time or territory.
- Missing the secondary use reserved in the privacy policy, which allows data to be kept for statistical and scientific research under anonymisation, while model training is neither authorised nor excluded in writing.
- Photographing undressed subjects as a routine weekly practice, which demands consent, dignity and safeguarding procedures that no software feature can supply.

Low on the software side, demanding on the practical side. There is nothing to install on a server: the platform runs in the browser on any operating system, on mobile and desktop. The only local component is the camera controller used for plug-and-play capture, which is unavailable on macOS. The real effort is procedural rather than technical — a thermal camera must be sourced, a tripod is recommended, and the imaging protocol governs distance, framing, room temperature and acclimatisation. The vendor strongly recommends its certified course without making it mandatory, and ships manuals and video tutorials inside the software.
