Overview

What is Legartis?

Legartis is a legal AI workspace built for contract work inside companies. It is published by Legartis Technology AG, a Zurich firm founded in 2017 by David A. Bloch and Marc von Samson-Himmelstjerna, which now counts more than twenty-five employees and entities in Switzerland and Germany. The product gathers five modules in a single workspace. The Legal Agent answers legal questions with references to public legal sources, compares contracts, summarises, drafts from a playbook and translates, drawing on the company's own playbooks, past reviews and contract history. AI Contract Review checks incoming contracts against those standards, flags deviations, proposes contextual corrections in familiar track-changes form and prepares negotiation fallbacks. The Contract Playbook Creator derives company policies from sample contracts or from a chat, produces AI-generated test sets and runs an auto-correction loop until the quality target is met. Contract Insights ranks the portfolio by risk, breaks findings down to clause level, warns before renewal dates and surfaces unusual clauses that no playbook anticipated. Contract Management keeps every contract, version and signature in one repository, with folders mirroring the company structure, tasks and approvals on the contract itself, and signing through DocuSign. The positioning is deliberately against generic assistants: Legartis says it was built by lawyers, runs an agentic framework and produces traceable output rather than language-model prose. That claim is backed by a three-layer quality system combining legal best practices, an AI Quality Score measured per requirement, and detection of clauses that fall outside expected patterns. Published figures include contract review up to 85% faster, 96% risk detection, up to 98% less effort on playbook creation, and DPA reviews cut from forty-five minutes to under ten. It runs as a web application, as a Microsoft Word add-in for Office 2019 and Office 365, and through an open REST API plus MCP. All plans host data in Switzerland and Europe under ISO 27001. Customers named on the site include dormakaba, TÜV NORD, Emmi, Arvato, Zürcher Kantonalbank, Framatome, Ringier and Implenia.

What it does

  • Review an incoming contract against your own playbook and flag every deviation and risk
  • Generate a contract playbook automatically from sample contracts or from a chat with the Playbook Agent
  • Ask the Legal Agent a legal question and get an answer referenced to public legal sources
  • Draft a contract from a playbook and edit it directly in the Word editor
  • Rank the whole contract portfolio by risk level and get alerted before contracts expire
  • Compare two versions of a contract side by side and accept corrections one by one or in a single click
  • Assign tasks, request approvals and comment on the contract itself, then send it to DocuSign for signature

When to use Legartis / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Legartis is the right fit.

When to use Legartis

  • In-house legal teams facing a rising contract volume without a matching increase in headcount, who want routine review delegated to the business
  • Procurement and sourcing teams that must check supplier contracts against company standards without waiting for a lawyer
  • Sales and account teams that need counterparty redlines assessed and answered quickly to close deals faster
  • Compliance, risk and data-protection officers who need a full audit trail and portfolio-wide visibility on risky clauses and deadlines
  • European groups with a strict data-residency requirement, since every plan hosts data in Switzerland and Europe under ISO 27001

When not to use Legartis

  • Solo practitioners and very small firms, for whom CHF 250 per user and per month excluding VAT is out of reach once the free NDA allowance runs out
  • Teams working in non-Latin alphabets, since document processing is limited to European languages written in the Latin script
  • Buyers who need every advertised feature live today, as internal collaboration, approvals, the contract repository and DocuSign signing are still flagged as coming soon in the pricing table
  • Organisations that refuse any model training by default, because the explicit opt-out only starts at the Team plan
  • Anyone looking for a mobile app or a general-purpose assistant, as Legartis ships only as a web app, a Word add-in and an API

How to use Legartis

A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.

  1. Create an account on app.legartis.ai/signup, or book a guided walkthrough with a legal AI specialist through the demo page
  2. Start on the free tier to review an NDA against the built-in NDA Best Practice Playbook and see how the output reads
  3. Build your first playbook, either by chatting with the Playbook Agent or by handing it sample contracts it derives policies from
  4. Add ready-made Best Practice Playbooks on request for NDAs, DPAs, SaaS agreements, purchase agreements or commercial leases
  5. Upload a contract for review through the dashboard or straight from the Legartis Word add-in
  6. Work through the findings in chat or in the review list, then apply corrections individually or all at once
  7. Check the AI Quality Score per requirement and run user tuning on your test sets to calibrate the model to your standards
  8. Organise contracts into folders that mirror your teams, since access rights follow the folder
  9. Assign tasks, request approvals and discuss on the contract, then send it out and sign through DocuSign
  10. Track risks, deadlines and team workload from the Insight dashboards once volume builds up

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Genuine legal specialisation rather than a wrapper: built by lawyers, agentic framework, traceable output positioned squarely against generic assistants
  • AI quality is measurable and steerable requirement by requirement, with a visible score and user tuning on the customer's own test sets
  • Strong data residency: servers in Switzerland and Europe on every plan, ISO 27001 certification and a full audit trail
  • Explicit tenant separation, with documents never used for other companies nor for Legartis' internal purposes
  • Playbooks are generated in hours instead of weeks, even when no written company policy exists yet
  • Non-lawyers can genuinely operate it, which is what makes delegating review to procurement and sales realistic
  • Prices are published openly, which is rare in enterprise legal tech, and a permanent free NDA tier lets teams test the output first

Cons

  • Steep entry price at CHF 250 per user and per month excluding VAT, with a five-seat floor on Team and ten on Enterprise
  • Model-training opt-out is reserved for Team and Enterprise, so Free and Professional customers do not get it
  • Several capabilities are still marked coming soon in the pricing table while the product pages describe them in the present tense
  • The privacy policy dates from 6 November 2019, long before the current agentic product, and never mentions language models or training
  • No Article 27 EU representative and no data protection officer are named, which matters for a non-EU vendor
  • No public support address exists: only info@ and privacy@ are published, with help routed through the knowledge base
  • No terms of service page is published, and the subprocessor list sits behind a trust centre that needs JavaScript to read

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Legartis handles your data.

GDPR overview

GDPR compliance is claimed explicitly and repeatedly: on the homepage, on the AI Quality page and in the help centre, alongside ISO 27001 certification and a Vanta trust centre where the controls are published. The privacy policy is written by reference to Regulation (EU) 2016/679, names Legartis Technology AG as controller, states that personal data sits on servers in Zurich, and routes information, access, rectification, erasure and restriction requests to privacy@legartis.ai. Named processors include Google, HubSpot, Front, Workable and MailChimp for the website, and Turicode, VSHN and LinuxFabrik for the application. Two gaps stand out: the policy was last updated on 6 November 2019 and says nothing about language models, and no Article 27 EU representative and no data protection officer are named.

Who owns the data?

Customer documents stay with the customer. Legartis states that entities are separated, so uploaded contracts are never seen or used for other companies, nor for Legartis' own internal purposes, and the homepage repeats that no data is shared with third parties. The privacy policy, whose data controller is Legartis Technology AG in Zurich, confirms that personal data is not disclosed to third parties without explicit consent, apart from the named processors and where the law requires it. Customers can wipe everything themselves through the Delete Workspace button, which closes the workspace and deletes all data irreversibly, although that option is not offered to Enterprise accounts.

Reuse rights

Legartis lists the purposes it claims for application data: performing its contractual obligations, verifying user credentials, providing support, improving its products and services, and preventing misuse. In-app feedback on AI performance is reviewed regularly and triaged between playbook issues and model-performance issues, and the AI is described as improving with every interaction and through the customer's own user tuning on test sets. An explicit opt-out of model training is sold from the Team plan upwards, which implies training is the default below that. Matomo analytics on the application run on Legartis' own servers in Zurich, while Google Analytics and Google Ads only cover the marketing site. Customers keep full use of the contracts, playbooks and drafts they produce; nothing in the published documents restricts reuse of their own output.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Legartis publishes no fixed retention period. Its privacy policy says information is kept as long as necessary for the purposes set out in the policy and to meet legal obligations, and that aggregated, anonymised or pseudonymised data may be kept indefinitely unless a written agreement says otherwise. Deletion is mostly in the customer's hands: a Delete Workspace button in the user settings, which requires the Packages and Billing permission, closes the workspace, logs out every user, cancels the subscription and deletes all data. The action cannot be undone and is not available to Enterprise customers. Inside the workspace, every contract version is preserved and remains accessible, and a signed contract is locked as a PDF. Erasure and restriction requests go to privacy@legartis.ai.

Hosting summary

Legartis states that personal data is stored on servers located in Zurich, Switzerland, and repeats across the homepage, the AI Quality page and the pricing table that all servers sit in Switzerland and Europe, on every plan including the free one. The infrastructure is ISO/IEC 27001 certified and the controls are published in a Vanta trust centre. Matomo, the analytics used inside the application, also writes to Legartis' own servers in Zurich. Two caveats apply. Google Analytics and Google Ads run on the marketing site only, and the policy admits that in exceptional cases an identifiable IP address may reach Google servers usually located in the United States. And the servers that actually process and store uploaded documents are described only by reference to the trust centre subprocessor list, which we could not read. The domain's own IP address geolocates to the United States, but that is a Cloudflare anycast edge node, not a processing location.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Legartis.

  • The pricing table marks internal collaboration, approval workflows, external negotiation, the contract repository and DocuSign signing as coming soon, while the product pages describe several of them in the present tense; check what is live before signing
  • Model training is not opted out of by default: the explicit opt-out is a Team and Enterprise feature, so Free and Professional users should assume their material feeds the system
  • The privacy policy was last updated on 6 November 2019 and says nothing about language models, training or AI processing, which leaves the current product largely undocumented in legal terms
  • No Article 27 EU representative and no data protection officer are named, and no terms of service page exists on the public site, so the contractual base for an EU buyer is thin
  • The subprocessor list lives in a trust centre that needs JavaScript to open, and the only readable list, in the privacy policy, dates from 2019; no language-model provider is named anywhere
  • Displayed prices depend on your IP address, showing Swiss francs in Switzerland and euros elsewhere, and every figure is quoted excluding VAT, so budget estimates need care
  • Delegating review to non-lawyers is the core promise, and it works only as long as someone keeps auditing the playbook: a stale or incomplete playbook silently becomes the company's legal standard
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Low on the technical side. Sign-up is self-service, the web app needs no installation, and Legartis advertises contract review as ready to use immediately, even before any playbook exists. The Word add-in installs easily wherever Microsoft Office 2019 or Office 365 is already deployed. Heavier work is optional and reserved for paid plans: REST API, MCP and Microsoft Entra ID single sign-on. The real effort is organisational rather than technical, since it goes into defining playbooks and running user tuning; importing an existing contract base is handled with Legartis rather than alone.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is Legartis?
A legal AI workspace for companies. Legal, procurement and sales teams work on the same contracts inside it, from drafting through review to risk analysis across the whole portfolio.
How is it different from ChatGPT or Claude?
Legartis says it was built by lawyers and runs an agentic framework that applies your playbooks and produces traceable results, rather than generic language-model output. It also hosts data in Switzerland and Europe under ISO 27001.
Is there a free plan, and what does it cover?
Yes, and it is permanent rather than a time-limited trial: two NDA reviews per month on one seat, in German, English and French, using the NDA Best Practice Playbook.
What does the first paid plan cost?
Professional is listed at CHF 250 per user and per month excluding VAT, or CHF 2,500 per user and per year, covering 120 contracts a year. Visitors outside Switzerland see the same figures in euros.
Which languages can it handle?
Paid plans cover all European languages written in the Latin alphabet. The free plan is limited to German, English and French.
Can people who are not lawyers use it?
That is the stated design goal. Procurement and sales teams review contracts on their own against the standards the legal team encoded in the playbooks.
Where is the data hosted, and is my contract used to train the AI?
Data sits on servers in Zurich and in Europe. Legartis states that entities are separated and documents are never used for other companies or internally, and it sells an explicit opt-out of model training from the Team plan upwards.
Is there an API, and does it work inside Word?
Yes to both. An open REST API and MCP integration come with the paid plans, documented in the help centre, and a Legartis add-in installs into Microsoft Office 2019 or Office 365.
How do I close the account and delete everything?
A Delete Workspace button in the user settings closes the workspace, logs everyone out, cancels the subscription and deletes all data. It cannot be undone, and it is not available to Enterprise customers.
Conclusion

Should you pick Legartis?

Legartis is one of the more coherent answers to a problem most legal departments recognise: contract volume grows, the team does not. Rather than selling a chat box, it encodes the company's own standards into playbooks, applies them consistently, and lets procurement and sales run the routine review themselves while lawyers keep the judgement calls. The AI Quality Score is the detail that sets it apart, because it turns a vague promise of accuracy into a number per requirement that a customer can watch and steer. The data story is unusually solid for a European buyer. Servers in Switzerland and Europe on every plan including the free one, ISO 27001 certification, an audit trail and explicit tenant separation are exactly what a risk committee asks for, and they are stated plainly rather than buried. Two reservations deserve weight. First, the commercial one: CHF 250 per user and per month excluding VAT, with seat floors on the upper tiers, puts this firmly in the enterprise bracket, and the model-training opt-out only appears from the Team plan. Second, the documentation lags the product. The privacy policy still carries a 2019 date and never mentions language models, no terms of service page exists, no Article 27 representative is named, and several features the product pages describe in the present tense are marked coming soon in the pricing table. Test it before committing. The free NDA tier is a genuine permanent plan, not a countdown, so a legal team can put real documents through it and judge the output before any budget conversation. For a mid-size or large European group with a legal department under pressure, Legartis is a serious candidate; for a solo practitioner or a small firm, it is priced out of reach.
