Overview

What is TogaAI?

TogaAI is a legal AI platform built specifically for the Portuguese legal system rather than adapted from a generic assistant. It is published by TogaAI, Lda., a Lisbon company whose LinkedIn page reports two to ten employees, and its stated audience is lawyers, law firms and in-house legal departments in Portugal.

The core of the product is a chat assistant that answers questions on Portuguese law and returns the sources behind every answer, with links to official repositories such as dgsi.pt, dre.pt and the Constitutional Court. Around it sit seven advertised capabilities: fast answers, deep analysis, document creation, intelligent review, document analysis, focused search restricted to domains the user chooses, and a template library. The workspace adds matter management with calculated deadlines and sharing for up to ten people, a document module, an editor, a calendar and templates. Audio transcription, released in July 2026, accepts mp3, wav, m4a, flac, ogg and opus files of up to 100 MB and three hours, and returns speaker-identified, timestamped text.

Security is the vendor's main differentiator alongside jurisdiction. Documents are encrypted in the browser with AES-256-GCM before upload, using a key derived from a four-digit PIN through PBKDF2; the PIN never reaches the server, and TogaAI states its own staff can only see ciphertext. All servers are in the European Union, with the database and file storage hosted by Supabase on AWS Frankfurt. Subprocessors are named individually: Supabase, Anthropic and Google under a zero-retention enterprise policy, and Stripe for payments.

The same brand covers several distinct lines: the platform itself, a free legal search engine requiring no registration and covering 151,885 documents across ten official sources, a REST API billed by token, a consumer income-tax assistant, an automation services arm, and a student product announced but not yet launched. The vendor states plainly that the platform does not provide legal advice, does not replace professional judgement and can produce incorrect output that the user must verify.

What it does

  • Answer a question on Portuguese law in seconds, with each source cited and linked
  • Upload a contract or pleading and get an immediate structured analysis
  • Flag abusive clauses and risks with the legal references behind them
  • Draft contracts, letters, notifications and pleadings ready for review
  • Transcribe a hearing or meeting with automatic speaker identification and timestamps
  • Restrict a search to chosen official sources such as dgsi.pt or dre.pt
  • Manage matters, calculated deadlines and a shared calendar for up to ten people

When to use TogaAI / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if TogaAI is the right fit.

When to use TogaAI

  • Portuguese lawyers and law firms handling a recurring volume of contracts, pleadings and deadlines
  • Employment-law practices reviewing large batches of contracts against the Codigo do Trabalho
  • In-house legal departments running due diligence across hundreds of supplier agreements
  • Solo practitioners and small firms who need research depth without a large-firm budget
  • Engineering teams embedding Portuguese legal reasoning into their own product through a REST API

When not to use TogaAI

  • Lawyers working outside Portuguese law: the engine is grounded in Portuguese legislation and case law only
  • Anyone looking for legal advice rather than a drafting and research assistant, since the terms exclude any lawyer-client relationship
  • Teams that need an interface or answers in a language other than European Portuguese
  • Users who expect a mobile app: no iOS or Android application exists
  • Buyers who require a signed Data Processing Agreement, which the vendor neither publishes nor offers on request

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how TogaAI handles your data.

GDPR overview

GDPR implementation is concrete and documented rather than merely claimed. The privacy policy, last updated in March 2026, is written explicitly under Regulation (EU) 2016/679 and names TogaAI, Lda. as controller. Six rights are set out with their articles: access (15), rectification (16), erasure (17), portability (20), restriction and objection (18 and 21), plus consent withdrawal. Rectification, erasure and data export are available as self-service in the account settings; other requests are answered within thirty days. The Portuguese supervisory authority, the CNPD, is named with its address for complaints, and the vendor commits to notifying it of incidents within statutory deadlines. All processing and storage take place inside the European Union with no declared transfers to third countries. No Data Protection Officer is named and no Article 27 representative is designated, the latter being consistent with an EU-established company.

Who owns the data?

Under clause 4.2 of the terms, the user keeps every right over the documents and matters they submit, which the vendor calls Dados do Cliente. Clause 4.3 grants TogaAI only a limited licence to process that material as far as running the platform requires. The vendor retains ownership of its own interface, logos and software. In practice the vendor also limits what it can do with the content: files are encrypted in the browser with a key derived from a four-digit PIN that never reaches the server, so TogaAI states its staff see nothing but opaque ciphertext. TogaAI, Lda. is the named data controller. The PIN cannot be recovered by the vendor.

Reuse rights

The user can reuse their own material freely: they keep all rights over uploaded documents and generated output, and no permission clause restricts what they do with it afterwards. The vendor's own reuse is narrow and explicitly bounded. The privacy policy lists six purposes: delivering the SaaS service, processing payments and tax obligations, personalising answers through an optional user-memory feature, sending transactional messages, providing support, and improving the service on aggregated and anonymised data only. Four legal bases are cited: contract performance, consent for analytics cookies and user memory, a legal obligation to keep billing records for ten years, and legitimate interest for security and fraud prevention. The vendor states it neither sells nor shares personal data commercially, and that uploaded files are never used to train AI models.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Account data and content are kept for as long as the account is active. When an account is deleted, the data is erased immediately and in cascade, covering matters, documents, conversations and stored memory, and database backups are purged within ninety days at most. Billing records are kept for ten years because Portuguese commercial law requires it. Technical error logs are kept for no more than thirty days and never contain document content. Free-plan accounts inactive for twelve months are notified and deleted thirty days later if there is no reply. Audio sent for transcription is deleted as soon as the transcript exists, leaving only the text. Document content decrypted for analysis lives in memory only, with no disk write and no logging, and is discarded immediately afterwards.

Hosting summary

All processing and storage take place on servers located in the European Union, and the vendor states there are no transfers to third countries. The database and file storage are provided by Supabase on AWS infrastructure in Frankfurt, Germany. The anonymisation step that strips personal data before a request reaches the generation model is also run by a European model in Frankfurt, and it is fail-closed: if anonymisation does not succeed, the request is blocked. Audio submitted for transcription is processed on European infrastructure and deleted immediately once the transcript is produced. Data in transit is protected by TLS 1.2 or above. Data at rest is encrypted with AES-256-GCM, using a per-user key that is itself wrapped by a key derived from the user's PIN, so the stored ciphertext is unusable without it. Named subprocessors are Supabase, Anthropic and Google under a zero-retention enterprise policy, and Stripe for payments.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting TogaAI.

  • Generated output can be wrong: the vendor itself warns about AI hallucinations and places the whole burden of verification on the lawyer, which is a real professional-liability exposure
  • Leaning on a fast, well-sourced assistant can erode the habit of reading the underlying text, and legal reasoning degrades quietly when the citation is trusted instead of read
  • The encryption PIN cannot be recovered by the vendor: losing it makes every stored document permanently unreadable, which is a genuine risk of self-inflicted data loss
  • The publisher's legal identity cannot be verified in any consultable register, and no postal address is given, so there is limited recourse if the service disappears
  • The ISO 27001 claim on the homepage is contradicted by the absence of any certificate, number or body, so security assurances should be read as vendor statements rather than audited facts
  • Features can move between tiers after launch, as the Outlook connection did within a week, so a subscription decision based on a single feature may not hold
  • Uploading client files to any third-party platform sits against professional secrecy duties: the architecture is designed for it, but the responsibility stays with the lawyer
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Setup is straightforward and requires no installation. The tool is a web application: you create an account by email or through Google, complete a short onboarding declaring your role and practice areas, and start working. The only technical step is choosing a four-digit PIN, which derives the encryption key for your documents; it is simple to do but must be kept safe, since the vendor cannot recover it. The vendor states no programming or AI knowledge is needed. Integrators face a slightly higher bar: create an API key in the developer portal and send a single authenticated POST request, with ready-made examples in cURL, JavaScript and Python.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is TogaAI?
TogaAI is a legal artificial intelligence platform built specifically for lawyers and law firms in Portugal. It automates contract analysis, legal research and document generation, and every answer it gives is grounded in Portuguese legislation and case law with the sources cited and linked.
Can it replace a lawyer?
No, and the vendor says so explicitly. The terms state that the platform does not provide legal advice, does not replace a lawyer's professional judgement and creates no lawyer-client relationship. It is a support tool, and verifying everything it produces remains the user's responsibility.
Are my documents used to train AI models?
No. The security page states that uploaded files are never used to train artificial intelligence models, and clause 4.3 of the terms excludes using confidential client data to train public models without explicit consent. The AI subprocessors operate under a zero-retention enterprise policy.
Can the TogaAI team read my documents?
The vendor states it cannot. Files are encrypted in your browser before any upload, using a key derived from a four-digit PIN that is never sent to the server. Support staff see only metadata such as file name, size and date, never the content.
How much does it cost?
There is a permanent free plan at no cost with ten messages per month. Pro costs 25 EUR per month and Elite 49 EUR per month, both excluding VAT, with an Enterprise tier quoted on request. Portuguese VAT at 23 per cent applies from 1 September 2026, taking Pro to 30.75 EUR charged per month.
Where is my data stored?
On servers located in the European Union, with no declared transfers to third countries. The database and file storage are hosted by Supabase on AWS infrastructure in Frankfurt, Germany, and the API anonymisation step also runs in Frankfurt.
Does it transcribe audio recordings?
Yes, since July 2026. You can attach mp3, wav, m4a, flac, ogg or opus files of up to 100 MB and three hours, and receive a transcript with automatically identified speakers and timestamps. The audio is processed on European infrastructure and deleted immediately afterwards. The feature is available on Pro and above.
Is there an API?
Yes. A public REST API is available, with a single POST endpoint that returns answers grounded in Portuguese law with source links, streamed token by token over Server-Sent Events. Billing is per token at 14 EUR per million tokens excluding VAT, and new accounts receive 2 EUR of credit.
What languages does it work in?
European Portuguese only. The vendor states that the interface, the prompts and support are all in Portuguese, and that answers are written in pt-PT rather than Brazilian Portuguese. Only the developer landing page has an English version.
Is there a mobile app?
No. TogaAI is a web application with a REST API for integrators. Searches of both the Apple App Store and Google Play returned no application published by this vendor, and the site displays no store badges.
Conclusion

Should you pick TogaAI?

TogaAI is a deliberately narrow tool, and that is its strongest argument. It covers one legal system and one language, and it makes traceability rather than breadth the point: answers come back with links to dgsi.pt, dre.pt and the Constitutional Court, which is exactly what a practitioner needs before relying on anything a model produces. The security posture is unusually detailed for a publisher of this size, with browser-side encryption keyed to a PIN the vendor cannot recover, EU-only hosting and subprocessors named one by one rather than described in the abstract.

The reservations are about the publisher rather than the product. TogaAI, Lda. is named in the terms and the privacy policy, but no registration number and no postal address appear anywhere on the site, and no Portuguese company register consulted holds a record for it. The domain was registered in February 2026, which makes the company very young, and its own machine-readable summary says only founded 2026. The ISO 27001 badge on the homepage is not supported by the dedicated compliance page and carries no certificate number or certifying body. The three case studies are entirely anonymous. No Data Processing Agreement is published, which will matter to buyers with procurement obligations.

For a Portuguese lawyer, the free tier makes the assessment cheap and the sourced answers make it quick to judge. For a firm signing a subscription, the questions to put to the vendor are the registration details, the basis of the ISO claim and whether a processing agreement can be signed. The product looks solid; the corporate paperwork around it is thin.
