Area9 Rhapsode
Adaptive learning platform from Danish publisher Area9 Lyceum. Rhapsode tailors every course moment by moment to the individual learner, and pairs authoring, publishing and analytics modules with generative AI that turns existing documents into adaptive content.
What is Area9 Rhapsode?
Area9 Rhapsode is an adaptive learning platform built by Area9 Lyceum ApS, a Copenhagen company registered with the Danish business register on 6 November 2017. It is the commercial expression of a much longer lineage: Sophus Medical, founded in 1997 by Ulrik Juul Christensen, was acquired by Laerdal Medical in 2002; Area9 followed in 2006 and supplied the adaptive engine behind McGraw-Hill Education's LearnSmart and SmartBook between 2008 and 2014. The company claims 25 years of cognitive research, more than 30 million learners across 185 countries, and over eight billion recorded human responses.
The platform is modular. Rhapsode LEARNER is the learner-facing experience; READER is an adaptive e-book; PUBLISHER produces digital and print output at the same time; CURATOR is the authoring and content-production environment, with review mode, test mode, to-dos, inline suggestions and real-time preview; EDUCATOR gives instructors analytics, KPIs and dashboards; and BRIDGE ingests existing material and generates adaptive content from it.
The intelligence comes in two distinct forms, and Area9 is unusually explicit about the difference. The adaptive sequencer is not machine learning: it is a largely deterministic ensemble algorithm that simulates the benefit of presenting each learning objective and picks the most useful one, using randomised interleaving to aid retention. It has no access to any personal metadata. Generative AI sits alongside it: a GPT chat inside BRIDGE converts existing documents one-to-one into Rhapsode modules, generates slideshows and probes, and extracts learning objectives, while the separate Area9 Mindflow RAPID product builds courses from a prompt or a PDF using OpenAI's GPT-4 family. External AI services handle speech synthesis, OCR, voice-to-text, handwritten maths recognition and translation, and a dedicated maths probe evaluates a learner's working rather than just the final answer.
Area9 states that no client data or content is used to train models. The platform is SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2 certified, TISAX certified since December 2023, Cyber Essentials certified, and conformant with WCAG 2.0 and 2.2 at A/AA. Reported outcomes include halved training time and full completion rates.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Serious, checkable security posture: SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2, TISAX since December 2023 and Cyber Essentials
- An unusually candid public AI policy, including a flat statement that client data and content are never used to train models
- Generative AI services from third parties are opt-in and can be disabled by the customer
- Accessibility is documented rather than asserted, with WCAG 2.0 and 2.2 A/AA conformance and published conformance reports
- Integration rests on open, mature standards (LTI, SCORM, xAPI, OneRoster, OpenID Connect) instead of proprietary connectors
- Broad language reach, with a 30-language interface and support for right-to-left and multi-byte scripts
- EU hosting by default on AWS Frankfurt, with every subprocessor named in the privacy policy
Cons
- No published pricing at all: the shop page is empty and there is no pricing page
- No self-service and no advertised free trial; the only route in is a form and a sales call
- The Terms and Conditions page is a marketing consent form, not a service contract, so no public product terms exist
- The security and privacy policy is not public and must be requested from an Area9 representative
- SAML 2.0 and LDAP or Active Directory single sign-on are not supported, SAML only being on the roadmap
- No native mobile app; the product runs as a progressive web app, despite marketing copy mentioning mobile apps
- APIs exist but are undocumented publicly and reach customers only through bespoke development work
Pricing & Plans
Area9 publishes no prices for Rhapsode. There is no pricing page, and the shop page on the site returns an empty body. The help centre describes the commercial approach instead: licensing is deliberately flexible and negotiated case by case, with per user per month, per user per year, unlimited user, price per course and revenue share arrangements all cited as possibilities. No free plan and no free trial are advertised, although a set of demonstration courses in the Collections library can be sampled. Prospective customers are directed to a contact form, after which a Solution Architect follows up. Because no entry-level figure is published, no starting price, currency or billing unit can be stated honestly.
- Per user per month licence
- Per user per year licence
- Unlimited users licence
- Price per course licence
- Revenue share arrangement
Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Area9 Rhapsode handles your data.
GDPR overview
GDPR compliance is claimed explicitly. The help centre answers the question directly: Rhapsode meets the requirements for full GDPR compliance including encryption, data security and 'forget me', and the platform was released in late 2018, after the regulation took effect. The controller, Area9 Lyceum ApS, is established in Denmark, so no Article 27 representative is needed; the supervisory authority is Datatilsynet. A named GDPR contact, gdpr@area9.dk, is published, together with the rights of access, objection, rectification and erasure, and an appendix listing every data processor by company name, registration number and address. One caveat: the policy still relies on the EU-U.S. and Swiss-U.S. Privacy Shield frameworks, invalidated in 2020, which dates the document.
Who owns the data?
Area9 Lyceum ApS, Galionsvej 37, DK-1437 Copenhagen K (company registration number 39079976), acts as data controller and represents the wider Area9 group, which comprises nine Danish and Delaware entities. The privacy policy states plainly that personal data belongs to the individual: Area9 undertakes to supply a copy on request and to correct, restrict or delete it. It also commits not to sell or otherwise pass customer data to third parties, limiting disclosure to the named processors it contracts with and to what the law compels. Requests go to gdpr@area9.dk, and complaints may be filed with the Danish supervisory authority, Datatilsynet.
Reuse rights
The site does not grant end users an explicit reuse licence over the data or content held in the platform; reuse is governed by the customer's own licence agreement rather than by any public terms. What Area9 does state is what it will not do with the material. Client data and content are never used to train models, and the adaptive engine is not a trained model at all: it is a largely deterministic ensemble algorithm that consumes scores, timings, answers and metacognition, and is explicitly barred from reading personal information or metadata. Export routes exist for customers who want their material back: content can be exported from Rhapsode, learning records can be pushed into a customer-hosted Learning Record Store through xAPI, and results are available for manual or automated download in CSV. Third-party generative services such as OpenAI and MidJourney are offered on an opt-in basis and can be switched off entirely.

Hosting summary
Rhapsode runs on Amazon Web Services. Area9 states that it typically uses the AWS Frankfurt region, chosen because it is central for European and North American customers and because Germany's data-protection regime reassures buyers. The privacy policy names Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL in Luxembourg as the cloud provider and lists four regions that may be used for end-user data: Frankfurt in Germany and Ireland, both inside the EU, plus Singapore and US East Ohio outside it. Percona LLC, based in Durham, North Carolina, is named as relevant only to the Ohio region. Support and server hosting are handled by group companies in Denmark, Germany and Estonia, each identified by registration number and address. Data exported outside the EU is said to go only to countries approved for personal data. Note that the marketing website itself resolves to a Google-operated address, which is separate from where the platform and its learner data live.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Area9 Rhapsode.
- The company's public age is ambiguous: marketing claims 25 years of research and more than 20 years of operation, while Area9 Lyceum ApS itself was only registered on 6 November 2017 and the site's own history page says January 2018
- There is no public service contract; the Terms and Conditions page is a marketing consent form, so the terms you actually sign are visible only after a sales conversation
- The privacy policy still relies on the EU-U.S. and Swiss-U.S. Privacy Shield frameworks, invalidated in 2020, so parts of the document are out of date
- Adaptive systems decide what a learner sees next; delegating that judgement wholesale can narrow exposure and erode an instructor's own sense of where a cohort is struggling
- Confidence-based scoring records how sure learners feel as well as what they know, which is revealing data about individuals and deserves care in how managers are allowed to read it
- Generative AI in the authoring chain can introduce plausible errors into course material; Area9 requires human review, but that safeguard only works if customers actually apply it
- Certifications and outcome figures such as halved training time are the vendor's own claims; only Cyber Essentials is independently checkable from the site
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
It varies by integration path. SCORM is described as relatively plug and play, needing no client-side development and set up quickly. LTI is similarly straightforward and returns progress to the originating LMS. Single sign-on over OpenID Connect or OAuth2 is heavier: it requires configuration of the customer's systems and involvement from their IT department. xAPI delivery to a Learning Record Store may need customisation and a design workshop, and bespoke API integration demands development effort on both sides. Content production is a separate workload, which Area9 can absorb or which customers can take on after Area9 U certification.

Should you pick Area9 Rhapsode?
Area9 Rhapsode is a mature enterprise platform rather than a tool you try out on a whim. Behind it sits Area9 Lyceum ApS, a Copenhagen company registered in November 2017 but heir to a research and product lineage running back to 1997, with McGraw-Hill, NEJM Group, Hitachi and a long list of regulated-industry clients on its record. The adaptive engine is the substance of the offer, and the company is refreshingly precise about what it is: a largely deterministic algorithm rather than a trained model, blind to personal metadata by design. Generative AI is layered on top for content production, and is opt-in and switchable.
Where the product stands out is governance. SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2, TISAX, Cyber Essentials, published accessibility conformance reports, a named subprocessor list and EU-default hosting add up to a posture that is easier to verify than most of the sector's. The flat statement that client data and content are never used to train models is the kind of commitment procurement teams can act on.
The frictions are commercial and documentary. There is no public price, no self-service route and no advertised trial, which puts the platform firmly out of reach of small buyers. The Terms and Conditions page is a marketing consent form rather than a service contract, the security policy has to be requested, and the privacy policy still leans on the invalidated Privacy Shield. APIs are said to exist but are documented nowhere public. Marketing also promises mobile apps where the technical answer is a progressive web app. For a large organisation with a real training problem and a procurement process to match, Rhapsode is a credible candidate; for anyone else, the front door is closed.
