Overview

What is Dubly.AI?

Dubly.AI is a video dubbing platform built by Dubly.AI GmbH, a German company registered in Oberursel and founded in April 2024. It starts from footage you have already shot — usually a person talking to a camera — and returns the same video in another language, spoken in a cloned version of the original voice, with the mouth movements rebuilt to match. It does not generate video from a script, and it offers no synthetic avatars.

The pipeline runs end to end. Uploaded material is analysed for language and for who is speaking, then transcribed, translated, revoiced and lip-synced. Source files arrive as mp4 or mov up to 5 GB, or as a YouTube link; results leave as MP4 video, MP3 audio split into full mix, voice only or background only, an SRT subtitle file, or subtitles burnt into the picture. The catalogue covers more than 40 target languages and dialects against more than 100 source languages, with no cap on how many target languages a single video can be turned into and no limit on video length. Multi-speaker scenes are supported, and speakers can be assigned segment by segment.

Two claims carry the product. The first is quality: the vendor argues that lip sync usually breaks where a hand, a microphone or a turn of the head hides the mouth, and that its model carries the movement through those moments. It publishes a lip-sync score of 96.4 against 81.3 for the next tool in its own comparison table, from a benchmark it commissioned itself. The second is jurisdiction: processing and servers sit in Germany, a data processing agreement is available, each account is sandboxed, and the terms rule out training on customer material.

Everything is included on every plan — the API, unlimited revisions, unlimited users, external reviewers who consume no seat. What you buy is credits: one credit dubs one minute of video into one language, and switching lip sync on doubles that. The service runs in the browser, with a REST API for volume, and its terms restrict it to business customers.

What it does

  • Dub an existing video into more than 40 target languages
  • Clone the original speaker's voice so it carries into the new language
  • Rebuild lip movement to match the translated audio
  • Correct any word in a segment-by-segment editor, as often as needed and at no extra cost
  • Produce translated subtitles as an SRT file or burnt into the picture
  • Hold brand terminology steady across every language with a glossary
  • Automate bulk localization through a REST API

When to use Dubly.AI / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Dubly.AI is the right fit.

When to use Dubly.AI

  • Localization and L&D teams pushing a whole e-learning or training catalogue into several languages at once
  • Newsrooms and publishers reusing an existing broadcast format on international channels
  • Internal communications and HR departments briefing a multilingual workforce with one video
  • Marketing and product teams republishing the same campaign or product film across several markets
  • European organisations whose procurement and data-protection reviews rule out US-hosted processing

When not to use Dubly.AI

  • Anyone who needs a video built from a script: Dubly.AI has no synthetic avatars and dubs only real footage
  • Teams whose problem is on-screen text, since graphics and captions inside the picture are left untranslated
  • Buyers shopping for a paid human review step, which the vendor openly declines to sell
  • E-learning teams that require SCORM export or a multilingual LMS player
  • Consumers and hobbyists, as the terms restrict the service to customers acting as businesses

How to use Dubly.AI

A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.

  1. Create an account on the web app and start with the free credit, which needs no card
  2. Upload an mp4 or mov file of up to 5 GB, or paste a YouTube link
  3. Let the platform detect the spoken language and separate the speakers automatically
  4. Pick one or several target languages from the 40+ on offer
  5. Wait for the first pass: roughly ten minutes of processing per language for ten minutes of Full HD, about twice that in 4K
  6. Read the translation in the segment editor and swap any word for an alternative, as many times as you like
  7. Add glossary entries and do-not-translate lists so brand terms hold across every language
  8. Switch lip sync on for the videos that need it, knowing it costs two credits per minute instead of one
  9. Invite colleagues or native-speaker reviewers, who take a role without using a seat
  10. Download the finished video, the audio stems, or the subtitle file — or trigger the whole sequence through the REST API

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Lip sync that survives the difficult cases — hands, microphones, head turns and several people in frame
  • Processing and servers in Germany, an Article 28 DPA and a written commitment never to train on customer content
  • Every feature included on every plan, the API among them, with no per-seat charge
  • Unlimited free revisions, with a corrected term propagating to all target languages at once
  • External reviewers can be invited without consuming a seat, so in-house native speakers do the quality pass
  • Human support on every plan: live chat during working hours, email answered the same working day, video calls
  • Procurement that fits large organisations — invoicing, purchase orders, NDAs and InfoSec questionnaires

Cons

  • An expensive entry point for the category: EUR 89.00 per month for 25 credits, where the vendor's own table lists rivals from USD 29
  • Lip sync costs double, at two credits per minute and per language, so a minute-based budget can be out by a factor of two
  • Credits bought on a monthly plan expire at the end of that month
  • No public API documentation: access to the interface is arranged through a sales call
  • Consumers are excluded, since the terms only admit customers acting as businesses
  • The headline lip-sync score comes from a benchmark the vendor commissioned, not from an independent test
  • The sub-processor list for the service is supplied on request rather than published

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Dubly.AI handles your data.

GDPR overview

GDPR implementation is documented in concrete terms rather than merely asserted. Dubly.AI GmbH names itself controller for account, billing and usage data and processor for personal data inside customer content; an Article 28 data processing agreement with technical and organisational measures is signed on request through support, and the terms ask that this happen before any personal data is uploaded. An external data protection officer is designated: simply Legal GmbH, Sebastian Schenk, in Würzburg. The privacy policy cites the GDPR, the German BDSG and the TDDDG, lists data subject rights and points to the supervisory authority. The company advertises full GDPR and EU AI Act compliance, AES-256-GCM encryption, a TÜV SÜD penetration test and per-account sandboxing. No Article 27 representative is named, and a German controller needs none.

Who owns the data?

Under the terms, the customer keeps everything. You retain full copyright, usage and reproduction rights over the material you upload, and you keep the rights to the translated and dubbed result. Dubly.AI GmbH receives only a non-exclusive licence, limited to the term of the agreement, to process, reproduce, modify and transmit that material as far as delivering the service and making backups requires. Any database built on its servers from your content belongs to you, during the contract and after it ends. Irreversibly anonymised data may be reused in aggregated form to operate, secure and improve the service. Training on customer content is excluded unless separately agreed in writing.

Reuse rights

Yes, within limits. Output produced on a paid plan is yours to use commercially without asking permission: the terms state that the vendor gains no right to reproduce, advertise or distribute your content for its own purposes and places no restriction on how you publish the finished videos. Two conditions apply. Output generated with the free evaluation credits may be used for internal assessment only, and any productive or commercial use of it is forbidden. And responsibility for the source material stays with you: you must hold the rights to the footage and have a legal basis for any personal data it contains, and the acceptable-use clause forbids output that impersonates someone or misleads viewers about who is speaking without that person's consent.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Customer content stays available for three months after the agreement ends: during that window you can ask for a free export in a common, machine-readable format. Once the window closes, the content is deleted or anonymised under the data processing agreement, unless a statutory retention duty applies; a later export is only possible case by case, if the data still exists, and against a reasonable fee. The vendor takes no safekeeping duty, so keeping your own copies remains sensible. Separately, the company publishes a GDPR-compliant deletion policy applied on request, and the marketing site keeps its server log files for a maximum of fourteen days unless a security incident occurs.

Hosting summary

The software is hosted in data centres inside the European Union and the European Economic Area, and the company states repeatedly that its servers are in Germany. Where a sub-processor is established outside the EU or EEA, including in the United States, EU or EEA server locations are selected for customer content; any remaining transfer to a third country, such as remote support access, relies on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses under Article 44 and following of the GDPR. Each account is sandboxed so material is never mixed with another customer's, and the company advertises AES-256-GCM encryption and a penetration test by TÜV SÜD. A distinction is worth drawing: this covers the processing of video. The public marketing site itself runs on third-party infrastructure named in the privacy policy, including AWS and Amazon CloudFront, and the domain resolves to a CDN address geolocated in the United States.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Dubly.AI.

  • The headline lip-sync score comes from a benchmark the vendor commissioned; treat it as a claim rather than an independent result
  • Competitor prices on the comparison page were last checked on 2 September 2026 and may have moved since
  • Lip sync consumes two credits per minute instead of one, so a budget planned in video minutes can be out by half
  • Credits on a monthly plan lapse at the end of the month, which punishes uneven workloads
  • The data processing agreement must be requested and signed before the first upload of personal data, not afterwards
  • The promise never to train on customer content carries a stated exception: a separate written agreement can lift it
  • A convincing dub of a real person is also a deepfake risk; the terms forbid impersonating someone without consent, and that obligation sits with you
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Low. There is nothing to install: you sign up on the web app, upload a file or paste a YouTube link, and the platform detects the language and the speakers by itself. The four-step path — upload, choose languages, review, download — needs no technical skill, and a first result arrives within minutes. Personal onboarding and help building the glossary are included on every plan, and large batches can be handed over entirely. Only the REST API route calls for a developer, and access to it is arranged through a call.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a credit and how far does it go?
One credit dubs one minute of video into one target language. A ten-minute video in three languages therefore costs 30 credits, and partial minutes are rounded up. Turning lip sync on doubles the rate to two credits per minute and per language.
Is there a free trial, and is there a free plan?
There is a free trial of one credit, which needs no credit card, and a booked demo comes with a translated, lip-synced clip of your own footage. There is no permanent free tier: beyond the trial, every use is paid in credits.
Do my credits expire?
It depends on how they were bought. Credits from a one-time purchase never expire. Credits from a monthly plan are valid for that month only. Credits from a yearly plan stay valid across the full twelve-month term.
How many languages are supported?
More than 40 target languages and dialects, against more than 100 source languages. There is no cap on how many target languages one video can be turned into, and no limit on video length.
Is my footage used to train AI models?
No. The terms state that customer content and output are not used to train the vendor's models or those of third parties unless a separate written agreement says otherwise, and each account is sandboxed so material is never mixed with another customer's.
Who owns the translated videos?
You do. You keep full copyright, usage and reproduction rights over the material you upload and over the dubbed result. The vendor holds only a licence limited to delivering the service, and output made with free evaluation credits is the one exception, being restricted to internal assessment.
Where is the data processed?
In data centres inside the EU and the EEA, with servers in Germany. Where a sub-processor is established outside the EU, EU or EEA server locations are chosen for customer content, and any remaining third-country transfer relies on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
Is a data processing agreement available?
Yes. An Article 28 DPA, along with the technical and organisational measures and the current sub-processor list, is provided on request through the support channels. It should be signed before any personal data is uploaded.
Is there an API?
Yes, a REST API is included on every plan and is meant for volume, with translations triggered from a CMS, DAM or LMS. There is no public documentation page, so access is arranged through a booked call.
How long does a translation take?
As a rough guide, ten minutes of Full HD video takes about ten minutes of processing per language, and the same video in 4K takes about twenty. Times vary with resolution and length.
Conclusion

Should you pick Dubly.AI?

Dubly.AI is a narrow product that knows exactly what it is. It does not make videos; it takes footage you already have and puts the same person, with the same voice, into another language, mouth movements included. Everything on the site follows from that choice — the segment editor, the glossary, the seat-free external reviewers, the refusal to sell a human translation service. Buyers who want an avatar, a lip-sync API component or an LMS player are sent elsewhere, by name, on the vendor's own comparison page.

Two arguments do the selling. The first is technical: lip sync that holds when a hand or a microphone crosses the mouth, backed by a score of 96.4 against 81.3 for the next tool listed — a figure worth taking seriously and worth remembering came from a benchmark the vendor commissioned. The second is jurisdictional, and for European buyers it may matter more: a German GmbH, processing in Germany, with an Article 28 agreement, per-account sandboxing and a written promise never to train on customer material. For a compliance team looking at employee faces and voices, that is a shorter conversation than any US-hosted alternative offers.

The price is the honest objection. EUR 89.00 a month for 25 credits is steep next to the self-serve tools it is compared with, lip sync doubles the consumption, and monthly credits lapse at month end. Consumers cannot buy at all. The tool earns its cost where volume and compliance meet — a training catalogue, a broadcast format, an internal comms library — and looks expensive for a single clip.
