IRIS+ is an open AI video analytics platform from Swedish vendor Irisity. It turns any existing IP camera into a real-time detection system, flagging intrusion, loitering, fire, falls and abandoned objects, with built-in anonymisation for privacy-sensitive sites.
What is IRIS+?
IRIS+ is the AI video analytics platform built by Irisity AB (publ), a Gothenburg company listed on Nasdaq First North Growth Market. Its central claim is hardware independence: IRIS+ works with any IP camera speaking RTSP or ONVIF, whatever the brand or generation, including analogue cameras behind a DVR and thermal or fisheye optics. That matters commercially, because analytics developed by camera manufacturers only run on their own AI-enabled models, cannot float between cameras, and push buyers towards replacing hardware that still works.
The platform ships a library of pre-configured AI Detection Agents: line crossing, perimeter intrusion, loitering, anomalies, traffic behaviour, abandoned objects, smoke and fire, falls and grouping. When none of them fits, Irisity builds personalised agents to order, with two people on a motorcycle given as an example. Day-to-day work happens in a web portal split into modules: Administrator for the hierarchy, devices, schedules and rules; Monitor for live event cards; Investigate for forensic search by timeframe, object attribute or map area; Calendar for active monitoring periods; Reports for scheduled exports; and a business intelligence dashboard for trends such as crowd density or incident hotspots.
Underneath, IRIS+ runs on Kubernetes with Docker containers, and scales vertically, horizontally and functionally, from a five-camera site to multi-tenant estates of several thousand cameras. It deploys on-premise, including fully air-gapped, in a cloud managed by Irisity, in a hybrid arrangement, or at the edge on Axis ARTPEC-7 and ARTPEC-8 and Mobotix cameras. Edge Devices process video locally and send only metadata, roughly five to ten kilobits per second per camera, and cache events when the link drops. A Core Server centralises up to a hundred cameras.
Licensing is per camera but floating, so analytics move between cameras at no extra cost. Integration is open: native connectors to Genetec, Milestone, Immix, Lenel OnGuard and Sentinel, plus a publicly documented REST API and WebHooks. Irisity reports more than 3,000 deployments across over 90 countries, with research centres in Gothenburg and Budapest, and makes patented real-time anonymisation a core part of its pitch.

Licensing is described qualitatively: one licence is required for each camera needing AI features, licences float between cameras at no additional cost, and Edge Devices consume none of their own. Commercial terms are therefore set by quotation. A free 30-day trial of IRIS+ Enterprise is available to new enterprise customers in the security sector, limited to five cameras and to software only; once it ends the analytics keep running and are billed against a standard price list that Irisity does not publish.

GDPR overview
GDPR compliance is stated explicitly and in concrete terms. Irisity claims privacy by design and by default, positions the customer as controller and itself as processor, and points complainants to the Swedish authority IMY. The product carries the mechanisms: black, dynamic and background masking, plus full anonymisation on sensitive sites where detected people are white-masked or replaced by low-resolution versions. Contact runs through privacy@irisity.com; a data protection officer exists but is not named, reachable via Customer Success. Two caveats. Irisity claims no certification of its own: ISO/IEC 27001 appears once, only as a standard the architecture supports. And no Data Processing Agreement is published or offered anywhere on the site.
Who owns the data?
Ownership depends on which data you mean. For the video handled inside IRIS+, the customer is the data controller and Irisity acts only as a processor, working on the customer's documented instructions; the customer decides what is recorded, what is masked and how long it is kept. Irisity becomes the controller for the separate business layer: website usage, contact details and the commercial relationship. The vendor also keeps sample video from customer installations for its own research, stating that it never links that footage to names or identifiers and never returns it to the original customer, property owners or authorities beyond what the law requires.
Reuse rights
Customers keep operational freedom over their own footage: they configure detection, masking and retention, export metadata and clips as CSV or MP4, and can disconnect the analytics at any time with no lock-in. What matters more is what the vendor does. Irisity states plainly that it stores example video from security installations to build training datasets for its machine-learning models, alongside troubleshooting and benchmarking. Footage may also be sent temporarily to third-party annotators, under the European Commission's standard contractual clauses when those sit outside the EU. Trial data may additionally be used to improve the product and for sales and marketing purposes unless the customer explicitly agrees otherwise in writing, which is the only documented route to exclusion. There is no self-service opt-out toggle.

Where data sits depends on the deployment chosen. On-premise customers keep full control of their own storage and network, and no third party is involved. For cloud deployments, video and metadata are protected using encryption services from Google Cloud Platform, including hardware-backed key storage, but Irisity names no region or country for that cloud. Separately, the personal contact and business-relationship data that Irisity processes as controller sits with Microsoft, in cloud services located within the EU; Microsoft may move it to third countries only in the event of a serious IT security incident, and only to protect it. Because Irisity operates globally, it reserves the right to transfer personal data outside the EU and EEA under EU-approved mechanisms. Video sent temporarily to third-party annotators outside the EU travels under the European Commission's standard contractual clauses. Research footage is held on approved, encrypted, firewalled equipment with access limited to research staff. Jurisdiction is Swedish: the terms are governed by Swedish law and the supervisory authority is IMY.

- Practical details conflict across the site: postal address, footer email and support hours are each stated in two different ways, so verify them before relying on any of them

This is a professionally installed system, not a sign-up. Expect network preparation: RTSP or ONVIF cameras, static addresses recommended, and outbound traffic only, so most networks need no firewall changes. An Edge Device wants four or more CPU cores, 8 GB of RAM and a 500 GB SSD, and handles around ten cameras; a Core Server centralises up to a hundred. Camera tilt should sit between 20 and 50 degrees. On-premise deployment assumes Kubernetes and Docker familiarity. Public documentation, in-portal video tutorials, paid training and partner integrators all lower the bar.

IRIS+ is a mature, well-engineered product rather than a young experiment, and its central promise holds up: an organisation with a mixed, ageing camera estate can add serious AI detection without replacing hardware, and move those licences around as priorities shift. The deployment range is genuinely broad, from a fully air-gapped installation to on-camera edge processing, and the integration story is open, with named connectors to the main video management systems and a publicly documented REST API. Masking and anonymisation are built in rather than bolted on, which is a real asset wherever cameras point at people who never asked to be filmed.
Two reservations deserve weight. The first is commercial opacity: no price, no currency, no published tiers, and a packages page whose table simply does not render. Everything runs through a quotation, which is normal in this market but leaves a buyer unable to compare. The second is about data. Irisity states openly that it keeps footage from customer installations to build training datasets, and may send video to third-party annotators outside the EU under standard contractual clauses. The only documented way out is a written agreement, negotiated case by case.
