What is Agurotech?

Agurotech is a Dutch precision-farming system that its own contracts call the Agurotech Monitoring & Decision Support System. It is not software on its own: growers buy instrumentation that goes into the ground, and an application that reads it. The soil probes measure volumetric water content, electrical conductivity and temperature using patented FDR technology, at 15 and 30 centimetres on one model, at 15, 30, 45 and 60 on another, and at 30, 60 and 90 on a third that shipped in 2026. Alongside them sit a modular solar-powered weather station offering a choice of up to seven variables, a digital rain gauge, and a crop temperature sensor used for frost work. Every device carries its own SIM and connects over 2G, 4G, LTE-M or NB-IoT, so no farm network is needed, and each one has a built-in GPS locator.

Readings arrive on a fixed cadence — soil probes sample every six minutes and upload every six hours, weather stations sample every thirty minutes — and land in a single app available on iOS, Android and the web. There the raw numbers become instructions: irrigation advice matched to soil texture, crop and growth stage, a ten-day forecast, a spray planner, disease-pressure tracking, frost notifications when a threshold is crossed, and access to data from five nearby weather stations. Satellite imagery was folded into the platform in 2025. Advice can be expressed in minutes of running time or in millimetres, depending on whether the grower runs a reel, a pivot, a lateral boom or drip lines.

Recent releases have pushed the product toward assisted interpretation: an in-app conversational assistant that accepts video, and a scanner that reads the values off a photographed laboratory soil report. Agurotech reports 6,612 devices installed across 18 countries on five continents, more than a thousand growers in the Netherlands, and 4.8 out of 5 from over 500 reviews. It designs and manufactures its hardware in the Netherlands and warrants it for one year. Everything is sold by quotation; no price is published.

Agurotech sells by quotation only: asked what a soil moisture sensor or weather station costs, the FAQ answers that the price depends on the size of the order and invites the reader to request a quote. The commercial structure combines a hardware purchase with a periodic subscription giving access to the software, the services and the data processing; that subscription runs for an indefinite term and renews automatically unless ended with two months' written notice, and maintenance is stated to be included in its cost. GDPR overview

The site never uses the words GDPR or AVG anywhere, and never claims compliance in so many words — but the privacy policy is built along GDPR lines. It names legal bases (performance of contract, legitimate interest, consent where required) and grants users access, correction or deletion, export of certain data, and restriction or objection to processing, all through a single address, info@agurotech.com. On international transfers it says only that approved safeguard mechanisms are used if data leaves the EU, without naming any mechanism or country. Security is described generically as industry-standard encryption, access controls and monitoring. No data protection officer is named, no data processing agreement is published or offered, and no subprocessor is identified. The publisher is established in Amsterdam, so no Article 27 representative is required or designated. The policy is dated 17 February 2025.

Who owns the data?

Ownership is split, and the split is asymmetric. Under the general terms, the customer keeps ownership of the farm management data they enter themselves — crop data, field data and soil information — and the privacy policy repeats that manually provided farm and field data stay theirs. Agurotech, however, retains ownership of all sensor data generated by the system, together with every derived output: indices, algorithms, models, visualisations and system-generated insights. The customer grants Agurotech a licence to process their data in order to deliver the service. Access to system data runs primarily through the Agurotech platform and authorised integrations, and the vendor may limit or condition access to raw data.

Reuse rights

The customer's freedom to reuse data is explicitly bounded. The general terms forbid aggregating, reselling, redistributing or commercially exploiting data obtained from the system across multiple farms, customers or third parties without Agurotech's prior written permission. Getting the data out is a separate question again: raw data exports, direct data access, API access and bulk downloads may be restricted, conditioned, or made available only under specific subscription tiers or a separate agreement, and the release notes of the app describe per-zone Excel and CSV export as an optional paid feature. Within the platform itself, reuse is unrestricted and collaborative: multi-year measurement history is kept per plot, there is no cap on the number of users, and colleagues or advisers can be invited with view, edit or admin rights. On its own side, Agurotech states it processes data to deliver the service, generate insights, alerts and models, improve its algorithms and products, and support customers, and that aggregated, anonymised data may serve product development, scientific research and commercial insights. It also states plainly that it never sells personal data.

The retention rule is short and unquantified: data is kept for as long as necessary to provide the services or to comply with legal requirements. Hosting summary

Data hosting is not documented. No hosting country and no hosting region appear anywhere on the site. The privacy policy lists hosting providers among the categories of recipients with which data may be shared, but names none of them, and the same is true of the telecom, satellite and weather data partners mentioned alongside. The only geographical statement is conditional: if data is transferred outside the EU, Agurotech says it uses approved safeguard mechanisms — a formulation that stops short of asserting that data is hosted in the EU, and that identifies neither mechanism nor destination. Security is described in generic terms as industry-standard encryption, access controls and monitoring. Two things should not be mistaken for hosting facts: the claim that the equipment is developed and produced in the Netherlands concerns hardware manufacturing, and the marketing site itself is served from a Google anycast node geolocated in the United States, which says nothing about where customer agronomic data resides.
