Overview

What is ChatShape?

ChatShape is a chatbot builder that turns content you already publish into an AI agent sitting on your website. The workflow starts at chatshape.com/create: you name the bot and give the address of the site it should learn from, and the crawler collects the visible, copyable text it finds. Before anything is generated it shows the links it extracted and a character count, so you can see the size of what you are about to train on. Clicking Generate Bot from Sources starts training, which takes from a few minutes to around twenty depending on how large the site is.

Websites are not the only source. You can upload several PDFs, point the bot at a public Notion page, and add further web pages later. Anything the crawl cannot supply can be written straight into the bot's prompt on its settings page, alongside the opening message. Both stay editable, which is how the tool expects you to tune tone and accuracy once real visitors start asking questions.

Deployment is deliberately plain. Embed on Website returns a script tag to paste into your HTML or your theme; the vendor documents the five clicks needed inside the Shopify admin and publishes an equivalent guide for WordPress. A house Chrome extension adds web sources without leaving the page you are reading.

Beyond answering, the bot can collect leads: switch on the email form and captured addresses reach the dashboard with their country of origin, exportable as CSV. Every message is recorded and can be reviewed or exported, and branding, colour and tone can be matched to the business.

Plans are drawn around three quotas, namely messages per month, chatbot generations and characters per chatbot. A permanent free tier allows two bots, though a free bot is deleted after five days of inactivity. The homepage claims 10,341+ businesses and carries testimonials from Rowan Cheung of therundown.ai, Greg Kogan of Pinecone.io and a customer reporting 85% AI deflection. The publisher is UFO Labs, reachable at one address, james@chatshape.com. No API is documented.

What it does

  • Crawl a website and extract all of its visible, copyable text
  • Train a chatbot on that text, on uploaded PDFs or on a public Notion page
  • Embed the chatbot on any website with a single script tag
  • Answer customer questions instantly, around the clock
  • Capture visitor emails through a form inside the chat window
  • Export captured leads to CSV, with each lead's country of origin
  • Review and export every conversation from the dashboard

When to use ChatShape / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if ChatShape is the right fit.

When to use ChatShape

  • Small businesses and Shopify merchants wanting to deflect repetitive tier-one support questions
  • Solo founders and freelancers running a website without any support staff
  • E-commerce managers looking to convert more of the visitors they already have
  • Support teams buried under the same handful of questions every day
  • WordPress site owners who want a chatbot without commissioning development work

When not to use ChatShape

  • Developers who need a documented API to drive the product programmatically
  • Teams wanting an omnichannel assistant on WhatsApp, Messenger or Slack rather than a website widget
  • Procurement-heavy enterprises requiring a DPA, a subprocessor list and SOC 2 or ISO 27001 evidence
  • Organisations needing a guaranteed multilingual interface, since no supported language is declared
  • High-volume operations, given that the entry tiers cap out at 20 and 500 messages a month

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Genuinely quick to start: one URL is enough and no technical skill is needed
  • Permanent free plan, with no credit card requested
  • Fully public pricing, each tier stating its quotas in figures
  • Lead capture and CSV export included rather than sold separately
  • Transparent crawl, with links and character counts shown before generation
  • Vendor-written step-by-step guides for Shopify and WordPress
  • Accepts PDFs and Notion pages, not only a website

Cons

  • No documented API, even though the privacy policy defines one
  • A steep gap between the 48 USD tier and the 398 USD tier, with nothing in between
  • Embedding on any website is absent from the Free and Hobby tiers
  • ChatShape branding stays on the widget until the 398 USD Pro plan
  • No refunds at all, whether partial or full
  • Skeletal legal documents: the terms cover only billing and email, and the privacy policy is blocked by robots.txt and unlinked from the site
  • No security certification, no DPA and no subprocessor list

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how ChatShape handles your data.

GDPR overview

The privacy policy devotes a full section to the GDPR, addressed to EU and EEA residents. It lists the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, withdrawal of consent and complaint to a supervisory authority, and states a legal basis for each purpose: contractual necessity, legitimate interest or consent. Cross-border transfers rely on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, with Article 46.2(c) cited by name. Requests go to help@mail.chatshape.com. Two things are missing: no Article 27 EU representative is designated, and neither a DPA nor a subprocessor list is published. Note also that compliance is never claimed in so many words, and the document carries no effective date.

Who owns the data?

The terms of service are silent on ownership: across two short sections they cover billing, refunds and email, and never say who owns uploaded content or the chatbot's output. The privacy policy fills part of the gap by naming the vendor the data controller of your personal data, which it defines as including your email address, first and last name, cookies, usage data and the text supplied when creating chatbots. That data may be disclosed to subsidiaries, employees, contractors and service providers, on lawful request by public authorities, or in a merger, acquisition or asset sale. The vendor states it does not sell it. Customer logos may be reused on the ChatShape website.

Reuse rights

Nothing in the terms grants or restricts a licence over what you get out of the tool: there is no reuse clause, no restriction on commercial use of the chatbot's answers, and no assignment of rights in either direction. The silence leaves the customer free in practice but unprotected by any written commitment. What the terms do settle is commercial. The product is sold as a monthly subscription, no refunds are provided, partial or full, and you may cancel at any time, with billing stopping on cancellation. The vendor also reserves the right to change pricing, policies, features and access restrictions at its own discretion. Your email address may be used for account, product and marketing messages, with an unsubscribe option.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
The vendor commits only to keeping personal data for as long as the purposes set out in its privacy policy require; no retention period is given in days or months and no deletion deadline is announced. Data may be held longer to meet legal obligations, resolve disputes or enforce agreements. Anything processed on the basis of consent is kept until that consent is withdrawn and until claims arising from the service expire. Usage data is described as generally kept for a shorter period, unless needed for security, service improvement or a legal obligation. Erasure can be requested under the GDPR via help@mail.chatshape.com, though the vendor may refuse in cases the law allows. One concrete figure exists: on the free plan a chatbot is deleted after five days of inactivity. Anonymisation is never mentioned.
Trains on customer data
Unclear

Hosting summary

The privacy policy is explicit on jurisdiction: data is transferred to and processed in the United States, and users outside the US are told so directly. For transfers out of the EU the vendor relies on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, citing Article 46.2(c) of the GDPR. Beyond that one country nothing is named: no region, no data centre, no hosting provider. No subprocessor list is published; Google Analytics is named for audience measurement, and card payments go through third-party processors described as PCI-DSS compliant, the vendor stating it never stores card details. Security is described only in general terms, with backups kept and access limited to authorised personnel. No SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification is mentioned and no DPA is published. One caution on the network evidence: the domain resolves to 76.76.21.21, geolocated in the United States on Amazon's AS16509, but that is an anycast edge node fronting the site, not proof of where data is stored.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting ChatShape.

  • The bot knows only what the crawl read: thin or outdated site content turns into wrong answers served to your own customers
  • Nothing is documented about guardrails, hallucination detection or escalation to a human, so mistakes can go uncaught
  • Handing first-contact conversations to a bot without supervision puts the customer relationship itself at stake, whatever deflection rate is advertised
  • The crawler takes all visible text on a site, which can include material never meant to be repeated in a chat answer
  • Conversations and captured leads are stored by the vendor and processed in the United States
  • The vendor's position on training models is not clarified and no opt-out is documented
  • The privacy policy on record dates from November 2023 and is not linked from the site, so the rules actually in force may differ
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Low. No machine-learning knowledge is needed, since preprocessing and training are handled for you. The only technical step is pasting a script tag into your site's HTML or theme editor, and the vendor documents the five clicks required in the Shopify admin as well as an equivalent path for WordPress. Expect to wait from a few minutes to around twenty for training, depending on the size of the site. The one real obstacle is commercial rather than technical: embedding on any website is listed only from the Standard tier upwards.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does ChatShape actually do?
It crawls the text of a website and trains a chatbot on it, then gives you a script tag to embed that chatbot on your own pages so it can answer visitor questions instantly.
What does the crawler read?
All the visible, copyable text on the pages it reaches. It lists the links it extracted and the total character count before you generate anything, so nothing is trained on blindly.
Can I build a chatbot from something other than my website?
Yes. You can upload several PDF files or point it at a public Notion page, and you can add further web pages to the sources at any time after the bot has been created.
Can it collect leads?
Yes. An optional email form appears in the chat window; captured leads show up in the dashboard with their country of origin and can be exported to a CSV file.
How much does it cost?
There is a permanent free plan at 0 USD. Paid tiers start at 19 USD per month for Hobby, then 48 USD for Standard and 398 USD for Pro, with Enterprise quoted on request.
What counts as a chatbot generation, and what counts as a message?
A generation is each time you click Generate Bot from Sources, which creates a new chatbot link. A message is one text you send to the bot that receives a reply.
Can I get a refund?
No. The terms state that no refunds are provided, either partial or full. You can cancel at any time and billing stops on cancellation.
Is there an API?
No API documentation is published on the site and no documentation page could be found, although the privacy policy does define an API as part of the service.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes. The privacy policy states that the service does not address anyone under the age of 18.
Conclusion

Should you pick ChatShape?

ChatShape is a narrow tool that does its single job well. Point it at a website, wait for the crawl, paste a script tag, and a support bot starts answering visitors, with no machine-learning knowledge required and no credit card to begin. Pricing is unusually transparent for this category: every tier states its message, generation and character quotas in figures, and the permanent free plan is usable enough for a real trial run.

The weaknesses are just as clear. The legal documentation is thin to the point of being a risk: the terms of service run to two short sections that never address data ownership or liability, and the privacy policy is excluded by robots.txt, unlinked from the site, and last publicly captured in November 2023. There is no documented API, no security certification, no DPA and no subprocessor list, which caps enterprise adoption regardless of how well the product performs. The jump from 48 USD to 398 USD leaves a growing team without an obvious next step, and the ChatShape badge stays on the widget until that top tier.

Read the publisher accordingly. UFO Labs is a very small operation: one named address serves general enquiries, support and enterprise sales alike, and the domain was registered only in March 2023. None of that disqualifies a website widget, and the tool is priced like what it is. It does mean anyone handling regulated or personal data should confirm the current privacy terms directly with the vendor before deploying the script, since the version on record predates this review by more than two years.
