GDPR overview
Checksub is published by a French company, so it falls directly under the GDPR, and no Article 27 representative is required or named. Section 15 of the terms cites Regulation 2016/679 and the French law of 6 January 1978 by name: Checksub commits, as a processor, to appropriate technical and organisational safeguards, to processing only on the customer's documented instructions and to the purposes set out in the contract, with a reservation for later statistical processing based on legitimate interest. The privacy policy, last updated on 18 October 2024, lists the full set of GDPR rights: withdrawal of consent, objection, access, rectification, restriction, erasure, portability and complaint to a supervisory authority. Requests go to team@checksub.com and are answered within one month at most.
Who owns the data?
Check Company is the data controller for the site, reachable at team@checksub.com. The picture on uploaded content is unusual and deserves attention: the terms state that Checksub remains the owner of the content communicated and that the customer grants Checksub a non-exclusive, worldwide, unlimited-in-time right to use, anonymise and copy submitted content, dictionaries, translation memories and glossaries in order to produce, develop and improve its services. Checksub also claims ownership of the acoustic models, linguistic models and translation memories derived from that content. Towards corporate customers, Checksub acts as a processor; towards individual customers, as a controller.
Reuse rights
Customers keep the practical use of their own footage and of the subtitle, translation and dubbing files they generate: the terms place no restriction on publishing or commercialising the resulting videos, and exports are explicitly designed to be burned in or downloaded as SRT and VTT files. What the terms do restrict is the platform itself, which may not be copied, reverse-engineered, resold or sublicensed. In the other direction, Checksub may reuse submitted content to produce, develop and improve its services, and may share personal data and content with third-party partners such as its payment and hosting providers. Content processing relies on named providers: Deepl SE for translation, Cantab Research Limited for speech recognition and Rev.com, Inc. for transcription.

The privacy policy names three hosting providers with their processing locations: Amazon Web Services in Ireland, Google Cloud Storage in Ireland and the United States, and Microsoft Azure in the United Kingdom. The same document warns that some services run on geographically distributed servers, which makes the actual storage location hard to establish. Content processing relies on Deepl SE, Cantab Research Limited — whose section acknowledges possible transfers outside the European Economic Area to United States servers — and Rev.com, Inc. Payments go through Stripe Technology Europe Ltd in Ireland. The marketing site itself is served by Webflow and distributed through Cloudflare, so the domain's public IP address resolves to an anycast node rather than an origin server. One caveat: the terms still describe Salesforce as the host of the site, a statement the 2024 privacy policy contradicts.
