Clinomic is a German MedTech vendor whose MDR-certified Mona platform automates intensive care documentation and whose Elaine AI companion answers staff questions from hospital-approved sources only. Sold to ICUs and hospital groups, never to individual clinicians.
What is Clinomic?
Clinomic is a German medical technology company founded in 2019 by intensive care physicians from RWTH Aachen University Hospital. It employs more than 70 people — engineers, developers, data scientists and doctors — and sells two product lines to hospitals.
The first is Mona (Medical On-Site Assistant), an integrated platform for intensive care built from eight components. mona PDMS is the bedside patient data management system: automated documentation, speech recognition, worklists derived from prescriptions, standardised workflows such as SAPS II and FAST-HUG, and shared views for physicians and nurses. mona OS is the interoperability layer, with an IoT gateway, an integrated communication server, IHE profiles and a Clinical Data Repository built on HL7 FHIR that connects to hundreds of medical devices. mona Terminal is dedicated bedside hardware with an AI-driven beamforming microphone, a high-resolution camera and a GPU module for local AI processing. mona HealthCloud is a private PaaS/SaaS cloud run by Clinomic, with a claimed 99.9% availability, backups, encryption and 24/7 service, offered as an alternative to on-premise hosting. mona TeleICU adds tele-consultation inside the PDMS over encrypted peer-to-peer VPN connections, using zero-footprint browser clients. mona AppStore is a marketplace of plug-ins and AI tools in five families, currently listing the ICU Standards App, EBM Clinical Tools, Radiology Viewer, Skills Handbook and AI Voice Translation. mona WebICU and mona Business Analytics complete the set.
The second line is Elaine, an AI companion for the whole hospital, positioned as an answer to shadow AI. Its six modules are a clinical AI chatbot, a Training Center, workflow management, Crosscheck, an analytics dashboard and an AI scribe. Elaine answers only from sources the institution defines — SOPs, guidelines and validated knowledge bases — with verifiable source links and contextual memory for follow-up questions.
Clinomic also publishes a knowledge base of more than 150 clinician-reviewed articles, with iOS and Android apps. The company claims up to 550 hours saved per bed per year, 143% treatment capacity, 26% fewer transfers and an eightfold reduction in documentation errors. Its software is certified under MDR (EU) 2017/745, class IIa for the software and class I for the terminal, alongside ISO 27001, ISO 13485 and a BSI C5 certificate. Sana Kliniken AG ordered more than 200 Mona terminals in February 2024.

GDPR overview
GDPR implementation is documented and concrete, at least for the website. The privacy policy, effective 19 August 2022, is written under the GDPR and the German BDSG and spells out the rights of access (Art. 15), rectification, erasure (Art. 17), restriction (Art. 18), portability (Art. 20) and objection (Art. 21), naming LDI Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf as the competent supervisory authority. A data protection officer is appointed. On the product side, Elaine is presented as GDPR-compliant, ISO 27001-certified and aligned with the EU AI Act, and mona TeleICU as fully GDPR-compliant through encrypted peer-to-peer connections over VPN; the company also holds ISO 13485 and a BSI C5 certificate for its cloud. As an EU-established publisher, Clinomic needs no Article 27 representative. No published policy covers patient data handled in Mona, and no processing agreement is offered publicly.
Who owns the data?
The privacy policy names Clinomic Medical GmbH, Forckenbeckstraße 66 in Aachen, as the controller, while the imprint identifies the publisher as Clinomic Group GmbH. A data protection officer is reachable at dpo@clinomic.ai, and at datenschutzbeauftragter@clinomic.ai on the business-partner notice. For clinical data, mona OS claims customer sovereignty: an open, documented HL7 FHIR interface to the Clinical Data Repository gives the hospital access to its own data in structured form at no additional cost, and with Elaine the institution decides which sources the AI may read. Note the scope: the published policy covers the website and social media pages only, not patient data processed inside Mona.
Reuse rights
No terms of use are published, so the site sets out no rules on how customers may reuse data. What is documented is website processing. Browser type and version, operating system, referring URL, host name, request time and IP address are collected automatically to deliver content, keep systems secure, fend off attacks and support legal action, on the legitimate interest basis of Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. Contact forms collect a name, email address, subject and timestamp; the Elaine demonstration form adds first name, last name, clinic name and telephone number; job applications arrive by email or through GoHire. Only strictly necessary cookies are set, without consent, under Section 25(2)(2) TTDSG. Clinomic states that it uses no automated decision-making or profiling, and that transfers to third countries, including the United States, rely on standard contractual clauses under Article 46(2)(c) GDPR.

Hosting differs by component. Elaine runs, according to the site, on a secured infrastructure hosted in Germany, with data that never leaves that protected environment. The corporate website is hosted by RAIDBOXES GmbH, Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 7, 48153 Münster, engaged as a processor under Article 28 GDPR, and the privacy policy states that processing takes place only within the European Union — while also mentioning transfers to third countries, including the United States, covered by standard contractual clauses. mona HealthCloud is Clinomic's own private cloud for medical devices and patient data, holding a BSI C5 certificate, but the site does not say in which country its data centres sit. Because the HealthCloud is presented as an alternative to on-premise deployment, hosting on the hospital's own infrastructure remains possible. One detail should not be confused with the rest: the web server answering clinomic.ai sits on a Belgian IP address (AS34762, Combell), which describes the website only and says nothing about where clinical data is stored.

The regulatory footing — MDR (EU) 2017/745 certification, ISO 13485, ISO 27001 and a BSI C5 certificate — sits well above what most AI vendors can show, and the traction is documented rather than asserted: an order of more than 200 bedside terminals from Sana Kliniken AG in February 2024, and two financing rounds, around EUR 16 million in 2023 and EUR 23 million in April 2025. The product logic holds together too, with Mona covering data capture, documentation and tele-intensive-care, and Elaine offering a governed alternative to staff pasting hospital material into consumer chatbots.
The counterweight is commercial and contractual opacity. There is no published price, no terms and conditions, no data processing agreement and no sub-processor list; the privacy policy dates from August 2022 and covers the website alone, saying nothing about how patient data is handled inside Mona, and nothing is published about model training on customer data.
