Overview

What is Clipchamp?

Clipchamp is Microsoft's browser-based video editor, aimed at people who need a finished video quickly rather than a professional post-production suite. It runs in Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome at app.clipchamp.com, and also ships as a Windows app that already sits in the Start menu on Windows 11 and installs from the Microsoft Store on Windows 10. A personal Microsoft account is enough to begin.

Editing is drag-and-drop: trim, rotate up to 360 degrees, crop, resize to a platform's aspect ratio, layer overlays, then add animated text, titles, stickers and shapes. Built-in recorders capture the screen, the camera, both at once, or voice alone, with a teleprompter for reading a script. A royalty-free content library supplies stock video, images, music, sound effects, GIFs and more than 120 vector shapes.

What sets the free tier apart is that the AI tools are not held back for paying users. Auto compose assembles a short video from imported photos and clips in a chosen style. The subtitle generator produces captions in more than 80 languages plus a downloadable transcript. The text-to-speech generator offers 400 voices with adjustable pace and pitch. Auto cut finds and deletes silences longer than three seconds, noise suppression strips background noise, echo and mic hiss, and background removal isolates a subject from a PNG or JPEG without a physical green screen. Clipchamp states there is no cap on how often these tools are used.

Exports are unlimited and watermark-free on every tier, up to 1080p HD. Premium — 4K UHD export, premium stock, premium filters and a single-brand brand kit — is not sold on its own: it arrives with a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription. Separate work and education editions are delivered through Microsoft 365 commercial and A3/A5 licences, adding single sign-on, centralised IT controls, comments and reactions.

Editing and export run on the local machine rather than in the cloud. Only optional backup on the personal version, or automatic backup to OneDrive and SharePoint on the work version, puts media online. Integrations named on the site cover OneDrive, SharePoint, Outlook, Dropbox, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn, Xbox and GIPHY.

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Clipchamp handles your data.

GDPR overview

GDPR is addressed, though mostly through Microsoft's group-wide framework rather than anything specific to Clipchamp. The education page states that Clipchamp complies with privacy regulations including COPPA and GDPR and that user data is encrypted. Microsoft Ireland Operations Limited is the controller for the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, and a Data Protection Officer is reachable through Microsoft's privacy support page, with a stated response time of no more than 30 days. International transfers rely on standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission, and Microsoft Corporation is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, its UK extension and the Swiss-U.S. framework. A Data Protection Addendum is published for enterprise online services. No Article 27 representative is named, which is consistent: Microsoft is established in the EU.

Who owns the data?

Clipchamp does not publish its own terms: the footer points to the Microsoft Terms of Use and the Microsoft Privacy Statement, last updated in July 2026. Microsoft Corporation is the data controller, with Microsoft Ireland Operations Limited acting as controller for the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Ownership of the footage stays with the user in practice: editing and export run on the local machine, and Clipchamp states that media files are not uploaded to the cloud for those operations. On the personal version, files reach Microsoft servers only if content backup is switched on; on the work version, media and project data are backed up automatically to the organisation's OneDrive or SharePoint account.

Reuse rights

Clipchamp states that videos made with the work version are copyright-free and royalty-free, and that they can be posted to social media and video-sharing platforms without risk of copyright claims. The stock library — video, images, music, sound effects, stickers and GIFs — is royalty-free, with a premium tier of assets reserved for Microsoft 365 subscribers. Exports carry no watermark on any tier and the site advertises an unlimited number of video and audio exports, so finished files can be reused commercially without asking permission. No separate licence request or attribution requirement is mentioned anywhere on the pages reviewed.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Temporary files held in the local cache while you edit are deleted automatically shortly after you save the video or refresh the app. For personal data, Microsoft's privacy statement gives criteria rather than fixed periods: data is kept as long as needed to provide the products and complete the transactions requested, and also to run the business, meet contractual and legal obligations, improve products, protect security and resolve disputes. Actual periods vary significantly by data type and context. The stated criteria are the purpose of use, the nature and sensitivity of the information, and legal obligations. A document stored in OneDrive is kept until the user actively deletes it, while precise geolocation is held for a shorter period. Microsoft refers users to individual product documentation for detail.

Hosting summary

Clipchamp processes media locally rather than in the cloud: editing and export run on your own machine, with temporary files kept in a local cache that the browser clears automatically a while after you save or refresh. Files only go online through backup — optional on the personal version, automatic to the organisation's OneDrive or SharePoint on the work version, where the project is stored as a .clipchamp file alongside an Assets folder. For account and personal data, Microsoft's privacy statement applies: data may be stored and processed in the user's own region, in the United States, and in any jurisdiction where Microsoft or its service providers operate facilities. Microsoft lists major data centres in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States, with the primary location usually the user's region or the United States and a backup elsewhere. Transfers rely on standard contractual clauses and the EU-U.S., UK and Swiss data privacy frameworks.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Clipchamp.

  • Deep dependence on the Microsoft ecosystem: a Microsoft account is mandatory and premium is tied to a Microsoft 365 subscription
  • The privacy policy is Microsoft's generic statement, not Clipchamp's, and it says data may be used to develop and train AI models, with no documented exclusion for Clipchamp media
  • No documented way to opt out of AI model training for this product
  • AI voiceover and background removal make convincing but synthetic material easy to produce, with the misuse that implies
  • Automatic subtitles are machine transcriptions and need proofreading before publication, particularly for accessibility
  • Stock assets differ between the free and premium libraries: check the licence before commercial distribution
  • On the work version, projects are backed up to OneDrive or SharePoint by default, so footage leaves the local machine
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Setup is close to nonexistent for an individual. Open app.clipchamp.com in an up-to-date Edge or Chrome browser, sign in with a personal Microsoft account, and you can start editing — no installation, no API key, no configuration. On Windows 11 the app is already in the Start menu; on Windows 10 it installs from the Microsoft Store. The one place friction appears is organisational: work and education access has to be enabled by a Microsoft 365 administrator with the right commercial or A3/A5 licence, and activation can take some hours to propagate.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I export without a watermark on the free plan?
Yes. Exports are watermark-free and unlimited on the free plan, at resolutions up to 1080p HD. Audio-only MP3 export is included as well.
Are the AI tools restricted to paying users?
No. Clipchamp states that all AI video editing tools are free for all users, and that there is no limit on how many times they can be used.
How do I get the premium features?
Premium is not sold on its own. It comes with a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, which unlocks 4K UHD export, premium stock assets, premium filters and the brand kit.
Which browsers does Clipchamp work in?
Microsoft Edge, based on Chromium, and Google Chrome. Clipchamp asks that the browser be updated to its latest version for the best experience.
What devices does it run on?
Desktop and laptop computers, Chromebooks included, plus a Windows 10 and 11 desktop app. It is not optimised for touch-screen devices such as iPads or tablets.
Is there a mobile app?
Not any longer in practice. The iOS app is no longer listed on the App Store and no Android app has ever been offered. The Windows desktop app remains available.
Are my video files uploaded to the cloud?
Not for editing or exporting, which run on your own machine. On the personal version, files are stored online only if you switch on content backup. On the work version, media and projects are backed up automatically to your organisation's OneDrive or SharePoint.
How many languages do the subtitles cover?
More than 80 languages for automatic subtitles, and 400 voices for AI voiceover. The website interface itself is offered in 25 languages.
Is there an API?
No. Clipchamp publishes neither a public API nor developer documentation, so it cannot be driven programmatically.
Is there a minimum age?
Clipchamp requires a Microsoft account. Under Microsoft's privacy statement, a child under 13 — or older where a region requires it — needs a parent or guardian's consent to create one.
Conclusion

Should you pick Clipchamp?

Clipchamp answers a narrow question well: how does someone with no editing background turn raw footage into something publishable today? The free tier is unusually generous for a product of this size — every AI tool is included, exports carry no watermark and no limit, and nothing has to be installed to get started. For a teacher recording a lesson, a support agent filming a walkthrough or a small team assembling a promo, that combination is hard to beat.

The trade-offs are structural rather than accidental. Premium is not a plan you can buy; it is a side effect of a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, and Clipchamp's own pricing page publishes no figure at all, so anyone budgeting has to leave the site to find out what the upgrade costs. The editor runs only in Edge and Chrome, is not optimised for tablets or touch screens, and the desktop app is Windows-only. The iOS app has been withdrawn from the App Store and no Android app exists, so this is a desktop tool in practice. There is no public API, which rules out any pipeline use.

On data, the picture is reassuring in one respect and vague in another. Media files are processed locally rather than uploaded for editing, which is genuinely unusual for a web editor. But the governing privacy documents are Microsoft's generic terms, not Clipchamp's, and they state that customer data may be used to develop and train AI models without documenting any opt-out for this product.

Clipchamp is a strong default for casual and workplace video inside the Microsoft ecosystem, and a poor fit for anyone who needs professional finishing, mobile editing or programmatic access.
