Clipdrop
Clipdrop is a browser-based suite of nine AI image tools covering background removal, object cleanup, upscaling, relighting, uncropping, text removal and text-to-image. A free tier with daily quotas, a paid Pro plan and a usage-billed API are available.
What is Clipdrop?
Clipdrop is a suite of nine AI image tools that run directly in the browser, with nothing to install. The homepage sums up the promise as creating stunning visuals in seconds with AI, and each tool does one job well rather than trying to be a full editor. Remove background extracts the main subject from a picture, Cleanup erases objects, people, text and defects, Image upscaler enlarges by 2x or 4x while removing noise and recovering detail, Text to image generates high-resolution realistic images from a prompt, Relight changes the lighting of a shot, Uncrop extends the frame to any format, Replace background teleports a subject into a described scene, Text remover strips embedded text, and Universal Resizer reformats an image for each social platform. The text-to-image engine is an in-house implementation of Stable Diffusion that the publisher describes as heavily optimised for extreme speed.
Access is tiered. A permanent free plan gives daily allowances renewed every 24 hours, twenty operations for background removal, upscaling, cleanup and relighting, fifty for text removal. A paid Pro plan adds queue priority, high-resolution output, upscaling up to 16x and a thousand operations per day on each tool, opened by a three-day free trial. Seven of the operations are also exposed as a documented REST API billed by usage.
The product has a well-documented history, told in the site's own FAQ. InitML was founded in 2020 by Cyril Diagne, Jonathan Blanchet and Damien Henry, joined the YCombinator Winter 2021 batch and raised 1.5 million dollars. Stability acquired the company in February 2023 and sold it on to Jasper.ai in February 2024. That history now shapes the present: the site states plainly that Clipdrop is part of Jasper, points developers to the Jasper API for newer models, and offers a contact form for anyone wanting to request extra credits or switch over entirely. The interface remains English only, and the footer still carries an InitML copyright.

When to use Clipdrop
- Graphic designers and art directors who cut out, retouch and enlarge visuals every day
- Social media and content managers who need one image resized for every platform format
- E-commerce sellers preparing product shots that require clean or replaced backgrounds
- Photographers and retouchers looking for quick cleanup, relighting and upscaling passes
- Developers embedding image processing in their own product through the documented API
When not to use Clipdrop
- Anyone needing full professional retouching with layers, curves and masks: these are single-purpose tools, not a complete editor
- Teams that require a signed DPA or a published subprocessor list before adopting a vendor
- Buyers who want to compare prices before signing up, since no amount is displayed on the site
- Users who need a non-English interface or a mobile app, neither of which the site offers today
- Product teams building long-term on the API, which the publisher now redirects towards Jasper
How to use Clipdrop
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Nine specialised tools in one place, all usable in the browser with no installation
- A genuinely usable free plan with daily allowances and HD background removal
- Commercial use of generated images is not restricted by the terms
- A documented API covering seven operations for embedding in another product
- A three-day free trial on the Pro plan
- A detailed privacy policy anchored in the GDPR with retention periods stated purpose by purpose
- Single-purpose tools that need no learning curve: upload, select, download
Cons
- No price is displayed anywhere: Pro amounts load from Stripe on the client side
- Legal documents are dated 21 June 2022 and have never been revised despite two changes of owner
- Publisher identity is split between Jasper AI Global, LLC in the legal notice and Init ML SAS in the privacy policy and terms
- The terms claim servers inside the European Union while the privacy policy names Google Cloud Platform in the United States
- The product is visibly winding down as a standalone: the site pushes users towards Jasper for newer models and the API
- The interface is English only, and the iOS app announced on the blog is no longer on the App Store
- No DPA, no published subprocessor list and no documented option to exclude data from model training
Pricing & Plans
Clipdrop offers a permanent free plan with allowances renewed every 24 hours, so the tools can be used at no cost for occasional work. The paid entry point is the Pro plan, billed monthly and opened by a three-day free trial, but its amount is not published on the website: the pricing page retrieves figures from Stripe on the client side and displays none in its static content. The API is described as usage-based, again without a published rate. No amount or currency could therefore be established from a first-party source, and the price should be checked after signing in.

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Clipdrop handles your data.
GDPR overview
The privacy policy is explicitly built on Regulation (EU) 2016/679, which it cites by its full title. It names a data controller, Init ML, a French company registered with the Bobigny Trade and Companies Registry under number 885 384 289, and it enumerates ten rights article by article: information, access, rectification, restriction, erasure, portability, objection, withdrawal of consent, post-mortem instructions and complaint to the CNIL. Legal bases are stated purpose by purpose, and transfers outside the European Union are covered by adequacy decisions, Standard Contractual Clauses, Binding Corporate Rules or certification. Two gaps stand out: no data protection officer and no Article 27 representative are designated, and the document has been in force since 21 June 2022 without revision, although the publisher has changed hands twice since.
Who owns the data?
Under the terms of use, you remain solely responsible for the content you upload, store or create, and the publisher positions itself only as a hosting provider for that content, disclaiming responsibility for it. Everything belonging to the service itself, the website, its software, infrastructure, databases and media, stays the property of the company, which grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable SaaS licence. The privacy policy names Init ML as data controller and lists who may see your data: company staff, processors handling hosting, cloud, payment and mailing, Stripe as payment partner, and public or private bodies where a legal obligation applies. Uploaded images, texts and photographs are explicitly part of the personal data collected.
Reuse rights
The site answers this directly in its own FAQ: the terms do not limit your ability to use images generated on Clipdrop for commercial purposes. You therefore do not need to ask permission before publishing, selling or reusing an output. The licence you receive covers use of the website itself and transfers no ownership over the company's own assets. Several uses are nonetheless forbidden: illegal or fraudulent activity, breaching public order, infringing third-party rights, and artificial intelligence research or development, in particular generating training data. Uploading or producing pornographic, defamatory, violent, racist, misleading or infringing content is prohibited, as is reselling or giving third parties access to the services.

Hosting summary
The two governing documents disagree, and the difference matters. The privacy policy states that personal data is hosted for the duration of processing on Google Cloud Platform servers located in the United States. The terms of use, by contrast, state that hosting of the website and of the data produced on it takes place on servers located within the European Union. Nothing on the site reconciles the two. The website itself is served by Vercel Inc., based in Covina, California, according to the legal notice, and the front-facing IP address resolves to an anycast CDN node rather than a storage location. Transfers outside the European Union are said to rely on adequacy decisions, Standard Contractual Clauses, Binding Corporate Rules or approved certification mechanisms. Processors are described by category only, hosting and cloud, payment and mailing, with Stripe named for payments. No nominative subprocessor list is published.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Clipdrop.
- Uploaded images are stored on the publisher's cloud for service improvement purposes, a wide phrasing with no documented way to opt out
- Without an account, images, photographs and texts are retained for two years
- The publisher's position on training models with your content is never stated, so it cannot be assumed either way
- The stated hosting jurisdiction is contradictory between the terms and the privacy policy, so the real location of your files is not established
- Legal documents dating from 2022 mean the declared data controller may no longer be the right party to contact
- Uploading photos of identifiable people is entirely your responsibility under the terms
- Building on a product whose owner is steering users towards another platform carries a real continuity risk
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Almost none for web use. There is nothing to install and no account is required to try a tool: upload an image, run the operation, download the result. Creating an account is optional and simply unlocks more free credits. API use is a step up but stays modest: read the REST documentation, then request credentials through the contact form. No server configuration or deployment falls to the user.

Should you pick Clipdrop?
Clipdrop remains a genuinely useful toolbox. Nine focused image operations sit one click apart in the browser, they need no installation or learning curve, and the free plan is generous enough for real occasional work rather than being a token demo. The commercial position is unusually clear too: the site states outright that its terms place no limit on using generated images commercially, which removes the doubt that surrounds many generative tools. Developers get seven documented API endpoints on top.
The reservations are about the publisher, not the product. Prices are simply not shown: the pricing page fetches amounts from Stripe once you are signed in, so you cannot compare before committing. The legal documents have been frozen since June 2022 while the company changed hands twice, which leaves the record contradictory. The legal notice names a Delaware company, Jasper AI Global, while the privacy policy and terms still name the French original, Init ML. The terms promise servers inside the European Union and the privacy policy names Google Cloud Platform in the United States. Neither statement has been reconciled, and no DPA, subprocessor list or training opt-out is published.
Most telling is the direction of travel. The site says in plain words that Clipdrop is now part of Jasper, sends developers to the Jasper API for newer models, and offers a form to switch over entirely. Treat it as what it is: a capable, still-working set of tools whose owner is steering traffic elsewhere. Excellent for one-off visual work today, a risky foundation for anything you expect to depend on for years.
