What is Coursable?
Coursable is a browser-based study workspace that puts AI to work on a student's own course material and on subjects they want to pick up from scratch. It is organised around two distinct modules.
Projects is the document side. You create a project, upload files — PDF, Word, PowerPoint, plain text or Markdown, up to 50 MB each — and add online sources such as YouTube videos, websites and articles. Coursable then lets you chat with that corpus to pull out a thesis, locate a figure or work through an assignment, and it generates flashcards, quizzes and summaries from the material you supplied. A study mode turns those questions into practice with immediate feedback, and anything produced can be exported as a PDF or shared with classmates through a public link. The free plan allows one document per project; Plus raises that to five.
Courses is the discovery side. You describe what you want to learn and the AI drafts a course structure, which you then refine in plain language: add a topic, remove one you already know, go deeper somewhere. Coursable's stated position is that the AI writes the outline and nothing else. Once the structure is confirmed, the platform searches the web for existing articles and educational videos and compiles them into each chapter, so the teaching material comes from human authors rather than from a model. Progress is tracked as you work through it, and Plus subscribers can edit courses and export them as PDF, JSON or XML.
A writing space sits alongside both, offering about a dozen AI actions on a draft: fix spelling and grammar, shorten, continue a paragraph, rewrite in a more professional or a plainer register, simplify or elevate the vocabulary, brainstorm, build a pros-and-cons list or surface action items.
The tool is published by a very small American company based in Boston, whose site first appeared online in August 2023. It is web-only, with no mobile app, and both the interface and course generation are English-only. A separately documented Coursable Enterprise API is available for programmatic course generation.

GDPR overview
Coursable never states that it complies with the GDPR; the claim appears nowhere in its policies. What it does offer, in documents dated 18 June 2024, is a set of rights applied to every customer regardless of location: the right to know, access, correction, erasure, portability, complaint and non-discrimination. Requests go to support@coursable.io and identity verification may be required. EU and UK users are told they may complain to their national supervisory authority. Beyond that the framework is thin: no Article 27 EU representative is designated, no data protection officer is named, no data processing agreement is published and no subprocessor list exists. All data is transferred to and stored in the United States, on the basis of the user's consent.
Who owns the data?
Under the terms of service everything you submit stays yours. Coursable takes only a limited licence to use your content in order to deliver the service and explicitly claims no ownership rights over it. The company describes itself as a service provider under the CCPA rather than a business or a third party, meaning it processes your data solely for the purpose you signed up for. It does not pre-screen uploads but keeps a discretionary right to refuse or remove content. Staff access is limited to support requests made with your express consent, error investigation, abuse enquiries and legally binding US orders. Deleted content becomes inaccessible immediately and is purged within 60 days.
Reuse rights
Because you keep ownership, you are free to reuse your own uploads and everything generated from them without asking permission: flashcards, quizzes and summaries export as PDF and can be shared with classmates through public links, which is exactly what the product encourages. The restriction runs the other way. You may not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any part of the service itself, and reusing Coursable's HTML, CSS, JavaScript, visual design or logos requires express written permission requested by email. On its own side, Coursable uses your content only to run the service, states that it never sells personal information, and shares browsing data with unnamed third-party analytics providers. Nothing in the published documents says whether uploaded content is ever used to train AI models.
Data retention & training
Hosting summary
Coursable states that it is a US company and that all of its data infrastructure is located in the United States, excluding content delivery networks. Users outside the country are told explicitly that anything they provide will be transferred to and stored in the United States, and that using the service constitutes consent to that transfer. No alternative region is offered and there is no EU hosting option. The application back end runs on Render, and the domain resolves to an address announced from San Francisco; because that address is anycast, it indicates the delivery network rather than the storage location. Google and Firebase components handle authentication, database and storage. On protection, the picture is mixed. Traffic is encrypted with SSL/TLS between the servers and your browser, and the terms mention backups and redundancy. But the privacy policy states plainly that data is not encrypted while it sits in the database, on the grounds that it has to be ready to serve. No hosting certification of any kind is claimed.

Essentially none. Coursable is a web application with nothing to install: you create an account with an email address or a Google sign-in, confirm it by email, and can upload a document or type a subject straight away. There is no configuration, no API key to place and no integration work. The only real requirement is a browser with JavaScript enabled, without which the site displays nothing at all. The one technical path is the Enterprise API, which needs development and production keys issued by the vendor.

Students working from their own lecture notes, slides and readings get real value from it: the document chat, the generated flashcards and quizzes, and the practice mode with instant feedback all attack the part of revision that is genuinely tedious. The pricing is unusually kind, with a free tier that is permanent rather than a disguised trial and an automatic 50% discount for anyone with a .edu address, which brings the annual rate down to USD 5.00 a month.
Its most interesting decision is a refusal. Rather than have a model write the lessons, Coursable uses AI only to draft the course outline and then fills each chapter with existing articles and videos written by people. In a market where generated study material is often confidently wrong, that restraint is worth something.
The reservations are mostly about maturity rather than the product itself. It is English-only, browser-only, and the company behind it is very small and remarkably opaque: no postal address, no legal form, no registration number. The data governance is light for a tool that asks you to upload your coursework — the vendor says plainly that data is not encrypted at rest, all storage is in the United States, GDPR compliance is never claimed, and no document says whether uploads are used to train models.
