What is DraftAid?
DraftAid is an AI tool that converts 3D CAD models into 2D fabrication drawings. The vendor describes it as “an AI-powered tool that automates 2D fabrication drawings from 3D models, saving time and reducing manual errors”. It runs as a plugin inside the CAD software an engineering team already owns — SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor — so there is no separate application to open and, according to the vendor, no heavy IT deployment. It reads STEP files and 3D models, with IGES also listed on the integrations page, and writes native DWG, DXF, IDW and PDF output.
The mechanism is learned rather than generic. The AI trains on a company's existing 3D models and drawings, while an uploaded template fixes the sheet layout, the sheet size, the annotation style and where notes are placed. After that training DraftAid states an accuracy of 80-90% of a complete drawing; the remaining 10-20% is finished by the engineer. Speed is stated just as precisely: “DraftAid generates most drawings in 20-30 seconds; complex parts may take up to 1 minute”. Drawings can also be produced in batches of hundreds, running in the background.
The scope is deliberately narrow. Supported parts are aluminium extrusions, rectangular machined parts, beams, sheet metal, and turned and milled components. Supported drawing types are fully dimensioned mechanical part drawings, key-characteristic drawings, and sheet metal flat patterns with bend notes. The vendor states its own limits: GD&T is announced as coming very soon and is therefore not available, and tolerances are not automatic — “No, DraftAid does not automatically add tolerances to drawings. Engineers must add tolerances manually after the drawing is generated.” CATIA, Siemens NX, AutoCAD, Creo and Fusion 360 are listed in the FAQ as unsupported. PLM and PDM integration is announced through an API, yet no API documentation page exists on the site.
DraftAid claims more than 210,000 drawings generated to date and cites a customer moving from 400 to 1,600 drawings a month. It addresses engineering teams, manufacturers, automotive, industrial automation and construction. The company is based in Toronto, Canada, joined Y Combinator's Winter 2024 batch and lists fourteen people.

No price is published anywhere on the DraftAid website, and no free plan or free trial is mentioned. The vendor sets out the model in its FAQ: “Pricing depends on your volume of drawings and level of customization. Contact our team for a tailored quote.”, and “No - DraftAid is offered as an annual license based on your expected drawing volume and AI customization needs.” Billing is therefore an annual licence sized on the expected drawing volume and on the level of AI customisation. Pay-per-drawing is explicitly excluded, monthly subscription is explicitly excluded, and there is no per-user or per-seat billing: the number of users under a licence is unlimited. The offer is aimed at organisations producing at least 200 drawings a month. A figure is obtained only by booking a call, during which the team assesses the process, the part types and the CAD tools in use. The only monetary amounts anywhere on the site belong to the ROI calculator, namely a default engineer cost of $40 per hour and a worked example of $720 a month and $8,640 a year: these are estimated savings, not a price.

GDPR overview
There is no mention of the GDPR anywhere on DraftAid's website. A search across the eighteen stored files, HTML included, returned zero occurrences of GDPR, CCPA, SOC 2, ISO 27001 or the word compliance. This is silence rather than refusal: the company neither claims compliance nor rejects it, the subject is simply never raised. No Article 27 representative is designated, no data protection officer is named and no GDPR contact address is given, which follows from the site having no legal pages at all. The demo form nevertheless collects a business email address with no accompanying privacy notice. For a European buyer, the entire regulatory basis therefore has to be established privately with the vendor, in writing, before any model or drawing is uploaded, because none of it exists in public.
Who owns the data?
DraftAid publishes no terms of service, no privacy policy, no legal notice and no cookie policy. That absence was checked against the site's full sitemap and by searching the archived HTML of every page. No clause therefore states who owns the 3D models, STEP files and existing drawings a customer uploads, nor who owns the drawings the AI generates from them, nor what the vendor may do with either. The FAQ does say what happens to the material: “The AI trains on your existing 3D models and drawings, adapting to your company's templates and standards.” Ownership of what can be sensitive industrial design data is thus governed by nothing the company has put in writing publicly.
Reuse rights
With no terms of service and no privacy policy on the site, nothing states what a customer may do with the generated drawings or what DraftAid may do with the files it receives. The only declared use appears in the FAQ: the AI trains on the customer's existing 3D models and drawings in order to learn that company's templates and standards, and the stated accuracy — “DraftAid achieves up to 80 - 90% accuracy after training on your company's drawing data” — is presented as the result of that training. The site says nothing about separation between customers, about whether anything learned from one account can reach another, or about how long the uploaded material is used. No opt-out from training is documented, no sub-processor is named and no data processing agreement is offered.

DraftAid publishes nothing about where customer data is hosted: no country, no region, no cloud provider, no list of sub-processors and no data processing agreement. The only observable technical element concerns the public website alone: draftaid.io resolves to 44.218.84.107, an address in AS14618 (Amazon.com Inc.) geolocated in Ashburn, in the United States. That indicates where the marketing site is served from and says nothing about where uploaded 3D models, existing drawings and generated files are stored or processed. Any buyer with a data residency requirement, European teams in particular but also suppliers working under export or confidentiality constraints, has no published answer and must obtain one from the vendor in writing, together with the identity of any sub-processor involved in the training the vendor describes.
