Overview

What is Elai?

Elai is a web platform that generates video from text. You write or import a script, choose a digital presenter, and the online editor known as the Elai Builder assembles narrated slides that render into a finished video. Nothing is installed and no camera is involved.

The product was born in 2021 out of Ukraine, whose roots the company still claims, and took #1 Product of the Day on Product Hunt in 2022. On 23 October 2024 it was acquired by Panopto, Inc., becoming that company's generative video creation layer and also sold as an add-on named AI Video Studio (Elai).

The library holds 80+ avatars, and four kinds of custom avatar can be commissioned: selfie, studio, photo and animated mascot. Voice coverage is the platform's most striking number, with 75+ languages and 450+ voices and accents, voice cloning in 28 languages, and automatic translation of a video already made.

Inputs are deliberately varied. A video can start from a typed script, from a script generated in-tool with GPT assistance, from a PPTX file whose components stay editable, from the URL of an article or blog post, or from a screen recording. On the output side Elai does something most text-to-video tools do not: interactivity. Slides can carry branching paths, clickable buttons, hotspots and text or image quizzes with multiple answers, which is what makes the result usable as actual training rather than marketing clips alone.

Rendering is 1080p on every plan and 4K from the Team plan up, in 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1. Around that sit a template library, a brand kit, stock images and video, Lottie animations, GIFs, royalty-free music, and AI image generation from Team upward. A documented REST API is open on every plan, including the free one, with tokens you generate and revoke yourself.

The declared audience is corporate: L&D and employee training, sales enablement, information security and compliance, customer education, corporate communication and marketing. Elai claims 2,000+ business customers and publishes case studies from Sigma Software, PetroShore Compliance, Springs, SendPulse and Kazakh-British Technical University. The acquisition release names skincare, medical equipment and industrial machinery manufacturers, software vendors, hospitals and universities.

What it does

  • Turn a written or AI-generated script into a narrated video built from slides
  • Pick a presenter from 80+ library avatars, or create your own from a selfie, a studio shoot, a photo or an animated mascot
  • Convert a PowerPoint deck or the URL of an article into a narrated video
  • Translate an existing video into 75+ languages in a few clicks
  • Clone your own voice and have it speak in 28 languages
  • Add branching, clickable buttons, hotspots and text or image quizzes to make a video interactive
  • Generate videos through the REST API for personalization at scale
Audience

When to use Elai / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Elai is the right fit.

When to use Elai

  • L&D teams producing training video at volume, without a studio or an outsourced production budget
  • Companies rolling out onboarding, compliance and information security programs to distributed staff
  • Organizations localizing existing course material into 75+ languages without reshooting anything
  • Teams sitting on PowerPoint decks, articles or scripts they want turned into narrated video
  • Customer education and sales enablement teams that need interactive video with quizzes and branching

When not to use Elai

  • Anyone who needs real camera footage: every presenter on screen is a synthetic avatar
  • High-volume video producers, since each render draws on a monthly minute quota (1 minute on Free, 15 on Creator, 50 to 150 on Team) and re-rendering the same project is counted again
  • Teams with irregular output, because unused minutes expire at the end of the cycle and are never carried over or refunded
  • Users who work from a phone or tablet: there is no iOS or Android application
  • Buyers who want pay-as-you-go, or a commercial license out of the box: access runs on a subscription, and the self-serve site terms grant a personal, non-commercial license
Get started

How to use Elai

A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.

  1. Create an account at app.elai.io/signup; the free plan starts with no commitment and one minute of rendering
  2. Start from a script: write it yourself, generate it with the AI storyboard, import a PPTX deck, or paste the URL of an article
  3. Pick a presenter from the 80+ avatar library and choose a voice among the 450+ available
  4. Lay out the slides, then add stock media, brand kit elements, a screen recording or interactive components
  5. Render the video; each render is deducted from your plan's monthly or annual minute quota
  6. Translate the finished video into another language using the automatic translation button
  7. Order a custom avatar if you need your own face: selfie at 199 USD per year, with a reference video shot on a phone, or studio at 500 USD per year
  8. Clone your voice as a separate annual purchase if you want the narration to sound like you
  9. Generate a token in the API section of your profile to create and render videos programmatically
  10. Wire Elai into the rest of your stack through Zapier or the LMS connectors (Thinkific, Moodle, uQualio, 360Learning, Articulate 360), and lean on the Freshdesk knowledge base, Elai Academy and the L&D template library

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Language coverage well beyond what a tool this size usually offers: 75+ languages, 450+ voices, and voice cloning in 28 of them
  • Native interactivity (branching, quizzes, hotspots) is rare among AI video generators and is what makes the output usable as real training material
  • Several ways in: plain text, a PowerPoint deck, the URL of an article, or a screen recording
  • A permanent free plan, not a countdown, so you can test a complete render before paying anything
  • The REST API is open on every plan, including the free one, with self-service tokens
  • A documented security posture: public trust center, published DPA, vendor-declared SOC 2 and GDPR compliance, and a SOC 2 Type 2 report available on request
  • Backing from Panopto since late 2024, which answers the durability question and opens a route into an enterprise video platform

Cons

  • The render-minute economy is tight and unforgiving: 15 minutes a month at 29 USD, and every re-render of the same project is deducted again
  • Unused minutes are lost at the end of the cycle, no fee is refundable for any reason including renewals, and auto-renewal is on by default
  • Custom avatars and voice cloning are billed separately on an annual basis, from 199 to 500 USD
  • No mobile application, on iOS or Android
  • Nothing is published about whether customer data is used to train models, no opt-out is documented, and no subprocessor is named
  • Self-serve data is hosted in the United States on AWS and DigitalOcean; choosing a storage region is reserved for enterprise customers
  • Parts of the site have aged: the "alternatives" page still dates from 2023 and even understates the product itself, advertising 35 avatars against 80+ today

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Elai handles your data.

GDPR overview

GDPR compliance is claimed explicitly. The security FAQ states that Elai abides by the GDPR, and the trust center displays "GDPR Compliant" and "SOC 2 Compliant" badges. The site privacy policy spells out the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, complaint and withdrawal of consent, with a dedicated contact: data-protection@elai.io, or written notice to the Data Protection Officer, 600 River Avenue Suite 100, Pittsburgh PA 15212. As a subsidiary of Panopto, Inc., Elai is covered by Panopto's certification under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, its UK Extension and the Swiss-U.S. DPF, and a DPA is published. Two gaps remain: no Article 27 EU representative is named on any public page, and authorized users of an enterprise customer are sent back to that customer, as controller, to exercise their rights. Policies are dated 13 March 2026, with 2024 and 2025 versions archived.

Who owns the data?

Elai's terms carve User Content out of its own intellectual property: what you upload or create stays yours, while the website, the services and their content belong exclusively to Elai. In exchange you grant Elai a worldwide, irrevocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free license, for the sole purpose of hosting that content on the site and the services. For enterprise accounts the split is formalized: the customer is the controller of its authorized users' personal data and Elai acts as processor, on the customer's instructions, with the customer choosing the storage region. Users can delete or download their data from their profile, and account deletion is available on request, with deletion of the associated data.

Reuse rights

On the product side, Elai collects your name and email, the scripts and text you type into the editor or send through the API, the photos, videos and music you upload, and the reference footage recorded for personal avatars and animated mascots. The stated purposes are running the service, support, security, personalization, aggregated statistics, audit logs and billing. Elai states that it will never sell personal data, nor share it with any third party for marketing purposes. Third-party providers are used for hosting, analytics, marketing and support, but no named subprocessor list is published. And no public page collected says anything about whether customer data is used to train models, or offers a documented opt-out.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Section 12 of the terms, "Files Storage", sets the only hard figure: for a user who has canceled a subscription, data is kept for one year from the cancellation date. During that year, rendered projects stay viewable, shareable and downloadable, but can no longer be edited or re-rendered. Beyond that, the privacy policies commit to nothing numeric: personal data is kept for as long as legally permitted, and as long as necessary to meet legal and contractual obligations. You can delete or download your data from your profile at any time, and account deletion is requested from Elai, which then deletes the associated data. A formal data retention policy exists in the trust center but is only released on request.

Hosting summary

All data, backups included, is stored in data centers located in the United States, across multiple availability zones, with Amazon Web Services and DigitalOcean named as the hosting providers. Traffic is encrypted with TLS/SSL in transit, storage is encrypted at rest, and a global CDN sits in front of the service. For enterprise accounts, the Authorized User privacy policy states that the customer chooses the geographic region or regions where its data is stored, with the European Union cited as a selectable option. That choice is not offered on self-serve plans: the public pages only ever name the United States as the hosting jurisdiction, which is why no hosting region is recorded for this tool. In practice, a European buyer on a self-serve plan should assume US hosting and rely on the published DPA and on Panopto's EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework certification for the transfer, while an enterprise buyer should make the storage region an explicit point of the contract.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Elai.

  • Auto-renewal is on by default, and cancellation happens only through "Manage Subscription" in your profile
  • No fee is refundable, initial or renewal, and unused minutes are lost at the end of each cycle, including minutes burned by re-rendering a project you had already rendered
  • You must hold every right and consent to the faces and voices you upload; the acceptable use policy puts that entirely on you, and impersonation is prohibited
  • The site terms grant a personal, non-commercial license, and allow Elai to modify or discontinue the service without notice
  • Elai is not obliged to back up your content and states that you alone are responsible for your own copies; termination can mean deletion
  • Data is kept one year after cancellation, after which access is lost
  • Disputes go to individual arbitration in the United States under Delaware law, with a class action waiver; access from an embargoed country is prohibited
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Low. Elai is a web application: nothing to install, the account is created self-serve, and the guided path from script to avatar to render assumes no video editing skill. A first video takes minutes. Scaling up is optional and slightly more technical: the REST API needs a token generated in your profile, and the Zapier or LMS connectors need wiring. The one step that takes real preparation is a custom avatar, which requires a separate annual purchase and a reference video, filmed on a phone for the selfie version and in a studio for the other.

Conclusion

Should you pick Elai?

The interesting questions about Elai are no longer about whether the technology works. It does, and since the Panopto acquisition in late 2024 the product sits inside a larger enterprise video company rather than standing alone, which answers the durability question that hangs over most AI video start-ups.

Two things genuinely set it apart. The first is linguistic reach: 75+ languages, 450+ voices and cloning in 28 of them turn a single English course into a global one without a reshoot, and that arithmetic is hard to beat with a camera crew. The second is instructional interactivity. Branching, hotspots and quizzes live inside the video itself, which is the difference between a talking-head clip and something an L&D team can put in front of employees.

The constraint is just as clear, and it is commercial rather than technical. Everything runs on render minutes: 15 a month on the 29 USD Creator plan, deducted again every time you re-render the same project, gone at the end of the cycle if unused, and never refundable. Budget for iteration, because iteration is what costs. Custom avatars and voice cloning are separate annual purchases on top.

One grey area deserves watching. Elai publishes a trust center, a DPA, and vendor-declared SOC 2 and GDPR compliance, with a SOC 2 Type 2 report available on request. But nothing on any public page states whether customer scripts, uploads and reference footage are used to train models, and no opt-out is documented. For a tool designed to ingest employee faces and voices, that silence is worth a written question to sales before the first upload.
