Ello
Ello is an AI reading and math tutor for children aged 4 to 9, on iOS and Android. It listens as a child reads aloud, then adapts the session. Daily activities are free; Ello Unlimited costs 19.99 USD monthly.
What is Ello?
Ello is a one-to-one AI tutor for reading and math, built for children aged 4 to 9, roughly pre-K through grade 5. It is published by Ello Technology, Inc., a Public Benefit Corporation based in San Francisco, and it runs as a mobile app on iOS and Android rather than in a browser. The three co-founders are Tom Sayer, a former teacher, Dr. Elizabeth Adams, a clinical child psychologist, and Catalin Voss, a Stanford researcher; six teachers sit on the team and the science advisory board includes Terry Winograd, Tim Shanahan, Alison Mackey, Nick Haber and Michael Auli. The product is voice-first. A child reads a story out loud while Ello listens, catching hesitations and mispronunciations and answering in under a second. That responsiveness comes from an in-house stack rather than a chatbot in disguise: patented speech recognition designed for the way children actually speak, a hierarchical teaching agent and expressive voice generation. Ello reports more than 100,000 hours of child speech in its training data, gathered from volunteering parents and children across US demographics plus a large Kenyan sample, and more than 3.5 million books read with the app. The first session doubles as an assessment: the child reads a story of increasing difficulty while Ello places their level and picks up their interests. After that, each day opens on a Quest screen carrying a personalised plan of up to fifteen minutes: a book to read, a phonics lesson, a math problem, a story to invent. Reading follows the Science of Reading, math is aligned to Common Core, and lessons run on an I Do, We Do, You Do progression across a library of 1,200+ decodable books. Stars earned along the way are spent in a Prize Store to grow a learning tree, and parents get a dashboard of work done, skills mastered and milestones. Safety is explicit: real-time filters on what Ello says, a safety classifier on what the child says, escalation to the team and SMS alerts to parents. Availability is the catch. Ello 2.0 is in pre-launch, with a waitlist, limited invitations in the United States and Kenya, and public availability announced for late 2026.

When to use Ello / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Ello is the right fit.
When to use Ello
- Parents of 4 to 9-year-olds who are learning to read and need daily practice at home
- Parents of struggling readers, including children with special needs or working below grade level
- Elementary teachers and school librarians, who get a free Classroom Mode with no account and no identifying data
- Multilingual families and children learning English as a second language, addressed by a dedicated approach

When not to use Ello
- Teenagers and adults: the content stops at grade 5 and is recommended for ages 4 to 9
- Schools and districts after an institutional contract: Ello does not contract with schools or education authorities and does not declare itself a School Official under FERPA
- Users in European Union member states and in Quebec, where the service is explicitly not offered
- Developers looking for an API: no API documentation is published
- Families outside the United States and Kenya, or without a recent smartphone or tablet: Ello 2.0 is a waitlist pre-launch and the supported device list is narrow, with Kindle Fire only announced as coming soon
How to use Ello
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Sign up for the Ello 2.0 waitlist on the website, where invitations are limited
- Wait for Ello to reach out, which happens as soon as a slot opens up
- Download the app on iOS or Android using a supported device: an iPhone 11 or newer, or a recent iPad on iOS/iPadOS 26, or a recent Android phone or tablet
- Create the parent account with a name, email, mobile number, then the child's first name, grade level and interests
- Give verifiable parental consent under COPPA, and decide whether to switch on General Service Improvement
- Run the first session: the child reads a short story aloud while Ello listens and places their reading level
- Open the Quest screen each day and work through the plan, which lasts up to fifteen minutes
- Spend the stars earned in the Prize Store to grow the learning tree
- Check the parent dashboard for progress, skills mastered and milestones
- Move to Ello Unlimited for the full activity library, several child profiles and parent reports
Pros & Cons
Pros
- A genuinely free tier: daily reading and math activities with no credit card and no advertising
- A specialised technical stack, with patented speech recognition trained on more than 100,000 hours of child speech
- Solid academic backing: Science of Reading, Common Core alignment and a board of recognised university researchers
- Child-centred safety design: real-time filters, redirection to a trusted adult, and an explicit refusal to play the role of a friend
- Short retention of raw recordings, deleted after 30 days
- Training on a child's data is strictly opt-in and can be withdrawn
- A free classroom mode for teachers and librarians that needs no account, and full free access in Kenya funded by non-profit partners
Cons
- Closed access: Ello 2.0 sits behind a waitlist with limited invitations, and public availability is only announced for late 2026
- Very narrow geographic footprint: the United States and Kenya in beta, with the service explicitly not offered in the EU or in Quebec
- No pricing page: the price only shows up in one answer of the homepage FAQ
- No App Store link published on the website, even though the iOS app is announced
- Systematic recording of the child's voice, which is inherent to how the product works
- A narrow age band of 4 to 9, which children outgrow quickly
- Demanding hardware requirements, and no DPA, subprocessor list or API published
Pricing & Plans
Ello offers a permanently free tier covering daily reading and math activities, with no credit card required and no advertising. The only paid tier documented is Ello Unlimited, at 19.99 USD per month, which adds the full activity library, multiple child profiles and parent reports. Access is entirely free in Kenya, funded by non-profit partners. No time-limited free trial is advertised, since the model rests on a permanent free tier rather than a trial. Subscriptions renew automatically, no refund is granted for a period already paid, and payments are handled through Stripe and Apple Pay.

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Ello handles your data.
GDPR overview
There is no claim of GDPR compliance. The privacy policy states the opposite: Ello does not offer its services in EU member states, on the grounds that it is not compliant with local law there. The texts it does cite are COPPA in the United States and the Data Protection Act in Kenya, where Ello is registered as a data controller with the ODPC. No Article 27 EU representative and no Data Protection Officer are named, and support@ello.com is the single contact for privacy matters. The rights offered - access, copy, objection, restriction, erasure, rectification, portability, withdrawal of consent and account deletion - resemble GDPR rights but rest on those other statutes. Ello states legal bases of contract performance, consent, legal obligations and legitimate interests, a 30-day response time (7 days in Kenya), breach notification to the competent authorities, and an incident response plan reviewed annually.
Who owns the data?
Ello, or its licensors, holds all rights in the Services and the content it supplies, and retains all rights in the machine learning models, algorithms and derivative works trained on user-generated content. Families keep the rights to their own User Content, and Ello gains no ownership beyond the licence granted to it: worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free and sub-licensable only to providers acting for Ello. It covers running and improving the Services, generating personalised books, and user-initiated sharing, and lasts while the content stays on the Services plus a reasonable purge window. Content carrying a child's name, image, voice or identifying data is used only to deliver the service or as the privacy policy allows.
Reuse rights
The licence granted to the user is personal, worldwide, royalty-free, non-assignable and non-exclusive, and it covers personal, non-commercial use only. Reselling, commercially exploiting or otherwise redistributing the site and the services is not permitted under it. Books a child builds in Story Creation are generated in real time from their own conversation and stay within that same personal scope. On the data side, families can ask for an export of their personal data in a transferable format, and can close the account by following the instructions set out in the terms of service.

Hosting summary
Ello states that its services are hosted and operated in the United States. Data may be stored and processed on servers located in the United States or in other jurisdictions where its service providers operate, and users outside the United States consent to their data being transferred and stored outside their own jurisdiction. For Kenya, transfers out of the country require explicit consent along with contractual and technical safeguards under the Data Protection Act. For Canada, Ello warns that data transferred out of the country is subject to local law and to access by local authorities. Third-party providers cover hosting, storage, analytics and IT support, and are bound by contractual confidentiality obligations, but no named subprocessor list and no data processing agreement are published. On the security side, Ello describes encryption in transit and at rest, multi-factor authentication, restricted access controls and annual internal audits. A technical check shows the website resolving to an Amazon IP address (AS16509) located in the United States.

Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Ello.
- Continuous recording of a young child's voice, a sensitive category of data by nature, even when encrypted and deleted after 30 days
- Session transcripts and learner profiles kept for the life of the subscription plus three years of inactivity, and recordings kept for five years if General Service Improvement is switched on
- Emotional attachment of a young child to an AI voice, despite the guardrails Ello puts forward
- Substitution for shared reading with an adult, which Ello itself frames as a complement rather than a replacement for real relationships
- Additional screen time for children aged 4 to 9
- Speech recognition errors depending on accent or a speech difficulty, with the risk of a correction the child did not deserve
- Story Creation content generated without human review before the child reads it, and an auto-renewing subscription with no refund for a period already started
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Setup requires no technical skill: download a mobile app and create a parent account. The real barrier is access rather than difficulty, since you first sign up for the waitlist and wait for an invitation. Hardware is the other constraint: an iPhone 11 (2019) or newer, an iPad 8th generation or equivalent running iOS or iPadOS 26, or a recent, capable Android device. Verifiable parental consent has to be given during signup, and a working microphone is essential because the child reads aloud. There is no server install, no integration work and no API.

Should you pick Ello?
Ello is a deliberately narrow product: one job, reading and math for children aged 4 to 9, served by an AI stack built for the way young children actually speak rather than a general chatbot wrapped in a prompt. The educational credibility is unusual for a consumer app, with teachers on the team, a university science advisory board, a reading curriculum grounded in the Science of Reading and math aligned to Common Core. The commercial model is equally readable: a real free tier with no credit card, a single paid tier at 19.99 USD per month, and full free access in Kenya through non-profit partners. Safety is not left implicit either, with a dedicated AI safety page, stated compliance with California's SB 243, real-time filters and parent alerts. The reservations are just as clear. The first is availability: Ello 2.0 is a waitlist pre-launch, invitations are limited to families in the United States and Kenya, and public availability is only announced for late 2026, so most readers cannot try it today. The second is regulatory: there is no GDPR compliance claim and the service is deliberately closed in EU member states, as well as in Quebec. The third is inherent to the product itself, since a child's voice is recorded on every session, even with encryption and a 30-day deletion window for raw audio. Ello is worth the wait for parents of a 4 to 9-year-old learning to read, especially where a child is behind or needs daily one-to-one practice that a family cannot always provide. Teachers and librarians get a free, account-free classroom mode with no identifying data, which is a low-risk way to test the approach. Everyone else, from EU families to schools wanting an institutional contract or developers looking for an API, should look elsewhere.
