Overview

What is Endel?

Endel is a sound wellness app that generates personalized functional soundscapes in real time. Behind it sits a patented technology named Endel Pacific: sensor inputs feed an AI logic layer, which drives sound generation and playback on the device itself. The inputs are contextual and physiological — time of day, weather, natural light level, bedtime, heart rate from Apple Watch, motion data such as cadence, step count and speed, head position for spatial audio, and location. From these the engine builds a listener profile and maps the inputs onto soundscape logic through a system of nodes. The sonic elements themselves are designed in advance by Endel's own sound team, then assembled and adapted on the fly. Generation is real time and on-device. Content takes two shapes. Soundscapes are endless and generative, organized into four modes: Focus, Relax, Sleep and Activity. Scenarios are timed sessions with predefined opening, middle and closing phases — Focus Timer, Baby Sleep, Anxiety Relief, Wake Up, Quick Task, Tinnitus Relief at 4500 Hz, ASMR and Binaural Beats at 40 Hz gamma. The sound is tuned to 440 Hz rather than 432 Hz, a choice Endel justifies by the cognitive load of perception. The ecosystem is unusually wide: iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, a browser player, Apple Watch, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Apple Vision Pro and an Amazon Alexa skill. Endel claims more than four million mobile downloads, over one million monthly active users and 1.5 million hours listened per month. The iOS app is rated 4.64/5 across 33,434 reviews, and has collected Apple Watch App of the Year 2020, App Store Editors' Choice, Google Play Best of 2021, a Product Hunt Golden Kitty in 2022 and a Microsoft Store Rising Star award in 2024. The publisher, Endel Sound GmbH, is headquartered in Berlin and was founded by a collective of developers and artists. Alongside the consumer app it runs a B2B arm that turns artists' tracks into wellness versions — James Blake, Grimes, Sia, 6LACK, Miguel, Richie Hawtin, the Alan Watts Organization, Roberta Flack, Chad Lawson, Kx5 — and builds integrations with Mercedes-Benz Group Research, Sony LinkBuds and LinkBuds S, Amazon Music and Smartbeats by Smartwater.

What it does

  • Generate a personalized soundscape in real time
  • Switch between the Focus, Relax, Sleep and Activity modes
  • Let Autoplay choose the soundscape that fits the moment
  • Start a timed Scenario such as Focus Timer, Anxiety Relief, Wake Up or Quick Task
  • Listen on Apple Watch without carrying a phone
  • Trigger playback by voice through Amazon Alexa
  • Sync one account across mobile, desktop, web and TV

When to use Endel / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Endel is the right fit.

When to use Endel

  • Knowledge workers and distributed teams who need long, uninterrupted stretches of concentration, through the Focus mode, the Focus Timer scenario and the Endel for Teams offer.
  • People with disrupted sleep looking for a wind-down routine, with the Sleep mode and the Wind Down and Baby Sleep scenarios.
  • Adults living with ADHD, for whom Endel publishes a dedicated page and a dedicated section of its science material.
  • Listeners seeking relief from everyday stress, anxiety or tinnitus, through the Relax mode, the Anxiety Relief scenario and the Tinnitus Relief scenario at 4500 Hz.
  • Runners and walkers who want sound that follows their cadence, step count, speed and heart rate through the Activity mode.

When not to use Endel

  • Anyone looking for a medical device: Endel claims no diagnosis and no treatment, and does not replace clinical care.
  • Under-18s: the terms of service set a minimum age of 18, so minors fall outside the intended audience without adult supervision.
  • Developers who want to build on the engine: there is no public API and no developer documentation.
  • Procurement teams that need a published rate card or a data processing agreement before signing: neither is available.
  • Listeners who want fixed, composed tracks, or music professionals looking for a production tool: the streaming releases are neither personalized nor adaptive, Binaural Beats requires stereo headphones, and the creative B2B work is sold as a separate service rather than through the app.

How to use Endel

A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.

  1. Download the app for iOS, Android, Mac or Windows, or open the web player in a browser.
  2. Create an account with an email address or through Facebook Connect, or skip that step and use the app without an account in generic mode.
  3. Pick a mode: Focus, Relax, Sleep or Activity.
  4. Or turn on Autoplay and let the app select the soundscape that fits the time of day.
  5. Optionally grant the heart rate, motion and location permissions to unlock full personalization.
  6. Launch a timed Scenario when you have a specific task or moment in mind.
  7. On Amazon Alexa, no installation is needed: say "Alexa, start Endel" or "Alexa, start Sleep with Endel".
  8. Bind a soundscape to an Alexa Routine, for example a "Start Bedtime Routine" phrase.
  9. On Apple Watch, use the standalone app, which works without an iPhone; on Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV, play the full-screen generative visuals.
  10. For help, use the in-app form, the Zendesk help center, or write to ask@endel.io.

Pricing

Pricing & Plans

Endel runs on a paid subscription model. The application itself is free to download — the App Store lists a price of 0.00 and labels it as free — but the content sits behind a subscription, and no permanent free plan is documented. A free trial is offered, through dedicated trial pages and inside the player, which states that the trial ends and can be cancelled at any time; the terms of service add that deleting the app from the device cancels the trial. No amount is published on any public surface: neither the main site, nor the payment site, nor the team site exposes a figure without JavaScript rendering, so no starting price, currency or billing unit can be reported here. Payment methods cited are Apple Pay, Google Play, Stripe and PayPal. The subscription renews automatically for the initial period unless it is cancelled at the latest 24 hours before the term ends.

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Endel handles your data.

GDPR overview

GDPR implementation is concrete and documented. Endel Sound GmbH, Sophienstrasse 21, 10178 Berlin, is named as controller, and a data protection officer can be reached at security@endel.io. The privacy policy in force is version 1.5, dated 15 October 2024. It lists the rights of access (Art. 15), rectification (16), erasure (17), restriction (18), portability (20), complaint to a supervisory authority (77) and objection to direct marketing. California residents are given a separate set of CCPA rights. Transfers to the United States, for instance through Facebook Connect or other third-party tools, are stated to be secured by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, and processors work under data processing agreements. As a company established in the EU, Endel requires no Article 27 representative, and none is designated.

Who owns the data?

Endel Sound GmbH declares itself the controller within the meaning of the GDPR and states that it also complies with applicable US data protection law, including the CCPA. What is tied to you is deliberately thin: an email address is required to open an account, a date of birth is optional. Once account sync is on, health data, subscription length and the platform you subscribed from are attached to that account. The heart rate, motion and location permissions remain optional and can be withheld. Endel states that it does not sell personal data as defined by the CCPA, and a data management section in the settings lets you delete your data yourself, irrevocably, from its databases.

Reuse rights

Endel automatically collects device model, operating system version and IP address, and uses them to deliver the service, improve features and prevent abuse and malfunction. The privacy policy grounds this on contract performance (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR), legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)) and consent (Art. 6(1)(a)). Personalization is opt-in and reversible: without permissions or additional data, no personal data is processed to build a personalized sound environment and you simply receive a generic one. Consent unlocks heart rate and motion inputs, plus location used to fetch weather and local time. Aggregated use feeds the weekly activity reports shown inside the app. For payments, only the data strictly required is passed to Apple Pay, Google Play, Stripe or PayPal. The newsletter runs on consent and stops via the unsubscribe link. Nothing in the policy mentions user data being used to train AI models, in either direction.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Endel states that it keeps data only for as long as you use the app and for as long as it is needed to fulfil the purpose for which it was originally collected. Storage can be extended where the law requires it, for tax reasons in particular. No fixed duration in days, months or years is published. You can delete your data yourself from the data management section of the settings, an action Endel describes as irrevocably deleting all of your data from its databases. Your email address is kept for as long as your newsletter consent remains active. California residents may request the specific retention information provided for under the CCPA.

Hosting summary

Endel states that data is stored both on the user's device and on the servers of its IT service provider, named as Amazon Web Services SARL, 38 avenue John F. Kennedy, L-1855, Luxembourg. The limit of that statement matters: the policy names the AWS entity and its registered address, but it does not state in which country the servers themselves sit, which is why no hosting country and no hosting region is reported here. Processing is said to take place solely on Endel's behalf and on the basis of a data processing agreement. Transfers to the United States, for example through Facebook Connect or other third-party tools, are stated to be secured by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Subprocessors are disclosed by name: Tableau (Seattle), Google Firebase (Mountain View), Crashlytics (Google), Mailchimp / The Rocket Science Group (Atlanta), OneSignal (San Mateo), Facebook and Spotify. Payments are handled through Apple Pay, Google Play, Stripe and PayPal.

Watch-outs

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Endel.

  • No price is visible before you enter the subscription funnel: you engage with a checkout flow before knowing what you will actually pay.
  • The subscription renews automatically and requires cancellation at the latest 24 hours before the term ends; according to the terms, the trial itself is cancelled by deleting the app from the device.
  • Real personalization is conditional on granting sensitive permissions — heart rate, location, movement — and health data is attached to your account as soon as sync is enabled.
  • Signing in through Facebook Connect entails a transfer of data to Facebook, Inc. in the United States.
  • The hosting country is not stated: only the provider AWS and its Luxembourg entity are named, no DPA is offered to customers, and no position on AI model training is published.
  • The terms set a minimum age of 18 while the App Store rates the app 4+ and a Baby Sleep scenario is offered; parents should weigh that gap themselves.
  • The publisher openly admits that sound perception is subjective and that Endel may not work for everyone in the same way: treating a generated soundscape as a substitute for sleep hygiene, for medical advice, or for the ability to concentrate without an audio crutch would be a misuse of the tool.
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Very low. No technical skill is required: download the app from a store, or open the browser player, then press play. An account is optional and only serves to sync across devices; without one the app runs in generic mode. On Alexa nothing is installed at all, a voice command starts it, and the Apple Watch app is standalone. There is no integration to configure and no API to connect. The only real friction is deciding whether to grant the sensor permissions that unlock full personalization.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Soundscape and a Scenario?
Soundscapes are endless: they are generated continuously from the inputs available on your device. Scenarios are timed sessions with a predefined structure — an opening phase, a middle phase and a closing phase — built for a specific moment such as Focus Timer, Anxiety Relief, Wake Up or Baby Sleep.
Is Endel's sound tuned to 432 Hz?
No. Endel tunes its sound to 440 Hz, not 432 Hz, and justifies the choice by the cognitive load involved in perception.
Does Endel use binaural beats?
Only in the dedicated Binaural Beats scenario, built around 40 Hz gamma. That scenario requires stereo headphones to work; the rest of the catalogue does not depend on them.
Is Endel scientifically proven?
Its soundscapes are grounded in research, and a peer-reviewed study compared Endel against playlists and silence, with a whitepaper published on bioRxiv. That said, the publisher itself states that sound perception is highly subjective and openly admits that Endel may not work the same way for everyone. It is not a medical device and claims no diagnosis or treatment.
Which platforms does Endel run on?
iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, a browser player, Apple Watch, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Apple Vision Pro and Amazon Alexa. The Apple Watch app is standalone and works without an iPhone, and Alexa requires no installation at all.
Is there a free trial, and how much does Endel cost?
A free trial is offered. No price is published anywhere on the public site: the amounts only appear inside the subscription funnel or in the app stores. Endel presents the paid subscription as the format that allows it to keep maintaining and developing the product. Note that the terms state the trial is cancelled by deleting the app from the device, and that the subscription renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the term ends.
Can I use Endel without sharing personal data?
Yes. Used without permissions and without extra data, the app processes no personal data to personalize the sound and delivers a generic sound environment instead. Endel also states that it does not sell personal data as defined by the CCPA.
How do I delete my data?
Through the data management section of the app settings. Endel describes that action as irrevocably deleting all of your data from its databases.
Is there a minimum age?
The terms of service set the minimum age at 18.
Is there a business or student offer?
Yes: Endel for Teams for companies and Endel for Students for students, each with its own sign-up surface. Neither publishes an amount or a discount percentage. A gift subscription is also available.
Conclusion

Should you pick Endel?

Endel is a mature piece of sound wellness software rather than an experiment: eight years on the same domain, apps decorated on four different stores, and a 4.64/5 App Store rating across more than 33,000 reviews. Its scientific positioning is genuinely documented — a peer-reviewed study, a whitepaper on bioRxiv, sleep work with SleepScore Labs and Dr Roy Raymann, and a 2023 project commissioned under CORDIS — which is rare in a category where backed by neuroscience is usually just a slogan. The platform coverage is equally uncommon: iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, browser, a standalone Apple Watch app, Apple TV, Fire TV, Apple Vision Pro and Alexa. The legal framing is solid for a European buyer: a German publisher acting as controller, a named data protection officer, subprocessors disclosed by name, self-service deletion, and a generic mode that works without handing over a single personal datum. Two reservations deserve to be settled before subscribing. The first is total pricing opacity: nothing on the public site says what Endel costs, the amount only surfaces inside the subscription funnel or in the app stores, and the subscription renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the term ends. The second sits on the AI and data side: no published position on model training, no DPA offered to customers, and a privacy policy that names its hosting provider without stating where the servers actually are. The natural audience: people who work in long stretches of concentration, poor sleepers, adults with ADHD, listeners seeking relief from stress or tinnitus, walkers and runners, and teams wanting a wellness benefit. Endel makes no medical claim and admits that sound perception is subjective. Use the free trial, check the price in the store before it ends, and judge with your own ears.
