Everlaw
Everlaw is a cloud-native ediscovery platform for litigators, corporate legal teams and government agencies, pairing document review, investigations and trial preparation with a seven-module AI suite that answers questions with citations drawn from the source documents.
What is Everlaw?
Everlaw is a cloud-native ediscovery platform built for legal work at scale: litigation, investigations and trial preparation. It is published by Everlaw, Inc., a Delaware company headquartered in Oakland, California, with offices in London, New York and Washington, D.C. Its homepage claims the world's most advanced ediscovery software, and its founder and CEO is AJ Shankar.
The platform's center of gravity is the Everlaw AI suite, which counts seven modules. Deep Dive takes a plain-language question and answers it against an entire collection, returning direct citations; Everlaw says it holds up on sets of more than 10 million documents. Coding Suggestions categorizes documents against the customer's own coding sheet, at a level the company describes as on par with or exceeding eyes-on review. Writing Assistant turns the record into narratives, analyzes depositions and stress-tests legal theories. Review Assistant works document by document: summaries, Q&A, topic analysis and custom extractions. Predictive Coding and Clustering apply machine learning to rank documents by relevance and to group them visually by concept. Translations detects and translates in bulk across more than 100 languages.
Around the AI sits the rest of the case workflow. Storybuilder supports case construction, deposition preparation and fact and narrative development. The published use cases run from ediscovery and early case assessment through legal holds, trial preparation, data privacy, internal investigations and FOIA and public-records work; Everlaw states that users cut the documents promoted into active review by 74% through early case assessment. The audience is segmented into law firms, corporations, state and local government, federal government and the Everlaw for Good program, and Bracewell, the San Francisco DA's Office, Adams & Reese and United Airlines are named as customers on the homepage.
Everlaw runs on AWS, and the customer picks the instance: United States, United Kingdom, EU (Germany), Canada or Australia, each with its own login domain. The boundaries are worth noting: access is through the browser only, with no mobile application and no public API or developer documentation found on the site.
What it does
- Question an entire document collection in plain language and get answers backed by direct citations (Deep Dive).
- Automate first-pass review, with a written rationale recorded for each document (Coding Suggestions).
- Rank millions of documents by relevance with predictive coding, and group them visually by theme with conceptual clustering.
- Summarize, question and extract information document by document (Review Assistant).
- Draft an evidence-based first version of a narrative or argument from the record (Writing Assistant).
- Translate documents across more than 100 languages, and transcribe audio and video.
- Issue and track legal holds, then produce and redact document sets.
When to use Everlaw / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Everlaw is the right fit.
When to use Everlaw
- Litigation teams working through very large document sets: Everlaw reports that Deep Dive stays reliable on collections of more than 10 million documents.
- Law firms, corporate legal departments and federal, state and local government agencies that run ediscovery in-house.
- Review managers who want AI-assisted first-pass review, with a written rationale recorded for each document.
- Trial and deposition teams building fact chronologies and case narratives in Storybuilder, from early case assessment through to trial.
- Regulated and public-sector organizations needing FedRAMP, GovRAMP, HIPAA or ISO 27001 coverage, including investigations and FOIA teams, where unlimited user licenses suit large or fluctuating headcounts.
When not to use Everlaw
- Solo practitioners and small firms looking for a published price: there is no rate card, no free plan and no self-service signup, so the only route in is a sales conversation.
- Developers who need to build on the platform: no public API and no developer documentation were found on the site.
- Anyone expecting to work from a phone or tablet: Everlaw is a browser-based web application, with no iOS or Android app.
- Occasional or one-off users: billing rests on the volume of data managed, plus credits for batch AI actions, which is hard to size for a single small matter.
- Consumers and teams working outside English: the service is sold to organizations, the minimum age is 18, and the product interface was found in English only.
How to use Everlaw
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Watch the on-demand Product Tour video to see the platform before speaking to anyone.
- Request a demo or schedule a meeting: there is no self-service signup, so every account starts with a sales conversation.
- Choose your regional instance at the outset, from the United States, United Kingdom, EU, Canada or Australia, since it determines where your data lives.
- Have standard data migration, onboarding and training carried out; they are included in the per-GB rate.
- Set up access with MFA, SSO and granular user management, with no seat counting since user licenses are unlimited.
- Ingest data through the cloud connectors for Microsoft, Google, Slack and Zoom, including native handling of Slack, Teams, iMessage and WhatsApp content.
- Have administrators set AI permissions and cap AI spend, both overall and per case, before review starts.
- Run single-document AI actions, which are included, and buy credits for the batch actions you expect to use.
- Log in day to day through your regional instance, at app.everlaw.com or its UK, Canadian, EU and Australian equivalents.
- Lean on the Help Center, Knowledge Base, training, product certification and release notes; support is reached through support.everlaw.com, support@everlaw.com or 1 (844) EVERLAW (383-7529).
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Unusually broad certification coverage: SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3, FedRAMP Moderate, GovRAMP Moderate, HIPAA, ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018 and Cyber Essentials Plus.
- A contractual commitment not to train or fine-tune a general-purpose generative model on customer Input or Output.
- Data residency chosen among five jurisdictions: United States, United Kingdom, EU (Germany), Canada and Australia.
- Unlimited user licenses and unlimited productions, with onboarding, standard migration, training and support included in the rate.
- AI answers grounded in the source documents with verifiable citations, at demonstrated scale, Deep Dive being tested beyond 10 million documents.
- Transparent legal documentation: a subprocessor list naming each provider and its processing country, and a customer DPA published openly with the SCCs.
- Single-document AI actions and Writing Assistant now carry no extra cost, and administrators control AI spend both overall and per case.
Cons
- No public pricing whatsoever: no amount, no rate card, not even a range.
- No free plan and no self-service trial; the only way in is a demo.
- No public API and no developer documentation.
- No mobile application, on iOS or Android.
- Batch AI actions consume credits bought in advance, and committed credits left unused expire at the end of the term.
- Product interface found in English only, which limits teams working in other languages.
- Gaps in the published record: the company's incorporation date is absent from the site, no Article 27 GDPR representative is designated despite a European customer base, and no training opt-out mechanism is documented, the guarantee resting entirely on the commitment not to train at all.
Pricing & Plans
Everlaw publishes no prices. There is no free plan, no rate card, no starting price and no range on the pricing page; the only way to obtain a figure is the sales contact form or the sales line, 1 (844) EVERLAW. The site does set out the structure. Billing takes the form of either a flexible case subscription or an annual platform subscription, and is based on the volume of data managed and on usage, without limits on users or uploads. Core platform features are included in the per-GB rate. Single-document AI actions and Writing Assistant are included at no extra cost, while batch AI actions, namely summaries, topic analysis, extractions, coding suggestions and bulk translation, together with natural-language questioning through Deep Dive, require credits. Committed credits that go unused expire at the end of the term.

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Everlaw handles your data.
GDPR overview
Everlaw documents a working GDPR posture. Its Customer Data Processing Addendum is published openly and incorporates the Standard Contractual Clauses: for EEA transfers Everlaw is the importer, applying Module One or Module Two as the case requires, under Irish law and Irish jurisdiction; UK transfers use the SCCs as amended by the UK Addendum, and Swiss FADP transfers are covered. Customers may choose an EU instance (Frankfurt) or a UK instance (London). A Data Privacy Framework Notice, a government-request transparency report and a Modern Slavery statement are published separately, and privacy questions go to privacy@everlaw.com. Current versions: Privacy Notice updated August 12, 2026; customer terms and DPA effective October 1, 2025; subprocessor list dated November 14, 2025. One gap: no representative designated under Article 27 of the GDPR appears on the pages reviewed.
Who owns the data?
Everlaw's customer terms leave ownership where it starts. The customer keeps all intellectual property rights in its Case Materials, including both the Input submitted to the AI features and the Output they generate, subject only to the limited license granted to Everlaw in Section 5 so that it can deliver the service. For that Customer Data the customer is the controller and Everlaw acts as processor. Everlaw becomes a controller in its own right only for the personal information it collects through its website and marketing activity; for EEA, UK and Swiss residents, Everlaw, Inc. and Everlaw UK Ltd. are named as the controllers of that data.
Reuse rights
Because the customer keeps its rights in both Input and Output, it can reuse and act on what the platform produces without asking Everlaw's permission; Everlaw's own license is limited to operating the service. On training the terms are explicit: Everlaw will not use Input or Output to train or fine-tune a generative AI model for general use through the service. Processing is shared with named subprocessors. AWS hosts Customer Data; Google LLC and OpenAI L.L.C. are involved only where the customer enables certain AI features; Pinecone Systems provides vector storage, effective December 1, 2025; and Zendesk sees data only if a customer attaches it to a support ticket. The DPA states that Everlaw does not sell Customer Data, and under the CCPA it neither sells nor shares the data of minors under 16. Customer administrators keep control of AI usage permissions, of total spend and of spend per case.
Data retention & training
Hosting summary
Everlaw runs on Amazon Web Services and states that it retains full administrative control over its virtual servers. The customer chooses the instance in which its data is stored and processed: United States, United Kingdom, EU (Germany), Canada or Australia. The AWS regions named in the DPA are US East and West, Canada Central, Asia Pacific Sydney, London and Frankfurt. Backups cannot be extracted outside the AWS region in which they were created, so residency holds through to the recovery copies. Encryption is applied at rest with AES-256, combining AWS default encryption with an application layer and encrypted snapshots, and in transit with TLS 1.2 or above. Where AI subprocessors are involved, Google LLC and OpenAI process in the EU only for customers on the UK or EU instances. The residency decision is therefore made once, at the start, and shapes both day-to-day processing and disaster recovery.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Everlaw.
- The customer terms describe Output as probabilistic and possibly inaccurate: every AI answer, summary or draft needs human verification before it reaches a client or a court.
- Responsibility for the use of the AI sits contractually with the customer, not with Everlaw, so the reviewer who signs off carries the professional risk.
- Leaning on AI-assisted first-pass review can erode a team's own familiarity with the record; the rationale recorded for each document is a check to read, not a substitute for reading.
- With no public price, the budget cannot be estimated before a commercial conversation, and committed AI credits that go unused expire at the end of the term.
- The choice of regional instance fixes data residency and is made at the start of the relationship, which makes it awkward to revisit later.
- Zendesk becomes a subprocessor as soon as someone attaches data to a support ticket, and OpenAI and Pinecone come into play only when certain AI features are enabled: both are decisions your own team makes, often without weighing them.
- No Article 27 GDPR representative is designated, which European customers should factor into their own compliance assessment.
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Technically, setup is light. There is nothing to install: Everlaw is a web application reached through a browser on the regional instance you choose. Standard data migration, onboarding and training are included in the rate, cloud connectors pull data directly from Microsoft, Google, Slack and Zoom, and access controls such as MFA, SSO and granular user management are configured rather than built. Product certification and training paths are offered. The real gating factor is commercial rather than technical: going live depends on the demo, quote and Order Form cycle, so plan for a procurement timeline rather than an installation one.

Should you pick Everlaw?
Everlaw reads as a mature enterprise platform rather than a tool you try on a whim. Its credibility rests on documented things: certifications running from SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3 to FedRAMP Moderate, GovRAMP Moderate, HIPAA, ISO 27001/27017/27018 and Cyber Essentials Plus; a customer DPA published openly with the Standard Contractual Clauses; a subprocessor list naming each provider; and an institutional client base spanning federal, state and local agencies alongside law firms and corporations.
The AI is the differentiator, and its design choice matters more than the module count. Deep Dive, Coding Suggestions, Review Assistant and Writing Assistant answer from the record and return citations you can verify, and Everlaw contractually undertakes not to train or fine-tune a general-purpose generative model on your Input or Output. Administrators cap AI spend overall and per case. The terms are equally plain that Output is probabilistic: human review before use is not optional.
The friction is commercial, not technical. No published price, no free plan, no self-service route in, and the structure alone, a per-GB subscription plus credits for batch AI actions with committed credits expiring at term end, cannot be turned into a budget without a sales conversation. Add the absence of a public API, of a mobile app and of a designated Article 27 GDPR representative.
Everlaw suits an organization with genuine document volume and genuine compliance obligations, able to absorb a procurement cycle, and willing to fix its data residency at the outset. If you need a price before a meeting, or a self-service start, look elsewhere. Reviewed August 13, 2026.
