Filmustage
Filmustage is an AI pre-production platform for film and TV that turns a locked script into breakdowns, shooting schedules, budgets, VFX estimates, storyboards, call sheets and sides, serving 45,000+ filmmakers from independents to major studios.
What is Filmustage?
Filmustage is an AI pre-production platform for film and television that covers the whole road from a locked script to the first shooting day. Eleven connected modules, namely script breakdown, shooting schedule, budget, VFX breakdown, storyboards and shot lists, annotations, call sheets, sides, script analysis, synopsis and team collaboration, feed one another, so that when the script changes the breakdown, the schedule, the budget and the call sheets follow.
At the centre sits AI Dude, a production agent that analyses the project, proposes optimisations and executes structured changes. It accepts plain production language or voice commands, keeps a memory of the project and of the user's role, previews every change before it is applied and saves automatically, with seven days of rollback history. Semantic search finds scenes by what happens in them rather than by keyword, and character coreference links every mention of the same element across the script.
Scripts are accepted in any language and any format, including non-Latin alphabets, stage plays, multi-camera TV scripts and documentary treatments. Exports run to PDF, XLSX, FDX, Movie Magic Budgeting 10 and Autodesk Flow Production Tracking, and Movie Magic files can be imported back.
The publisher is Filmustage, Inc., based in Wilmington, Delaware, United States, with a domain first captured on 4 December 2018. The home page claims 45,000+ filmmakers, more than 5.2 million hours of manual work saved and over $178 million saved, and lists productions such as The Gentlemen (Netflix), Nobody 2 (Universal Pictures), Masters of the Air (Apple TV+), Gangs of London (amc+) and Salem (DStv). Advisers include Barry Loudis and Byron Saltysiak, former WarnerMedia VPs, and Joe Jarvis, Senior VP at Final Draft; coverage in Forbes, TechCrunch and Business Insider and a 2023 Production Tech Innovation of the Year award are cited. Security is a selling point, with SOC 2 Type II and TPN Blue status. Commercially, a permanent Free plan covers the non-AI tools, the paid Director's Cut plan runs on coins, Enterprise is quoted on request, and the site is published in eleven languages.

When to use Filmustage / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Filmustage is the right fit.
When to use Filmustage
- Line producers and production managers who break down scripts and build budgets
- First assistant directors building stripboards, DOOD reports and call sheets
- VFX supervisors who need shot counts, confidence grades and bidding packages
- Productions bound by studio security requirements such as SOC 2 Type II and TPN Blue Shield
- Film schools and instructors, who have a dedicated academic offer
When not to use Filmustage
- Writers looking for a screenwriting application: Filmustage starts from a locked script and does not write it, an advantage its own comparison page concedes to Celtx
- Teams that need multi-column AV formats, beat sheets, read-aloud text-to-speech or an Adobe Premiere Pro plugin
- Post-production work proper: the platform stops at the first shooting day
- Consumer use or personal distribution of AI outputs, which the Content Policy prohibits
- Anyone under 18, excluded by section 12 of the Terms of Service
How to use Filmustage
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Create a free account on app.filmustage.com, with no credit card required
- Start a project and upload the script in PDF or FDX, in any language and any layout
- Run the AI breakdown: 20% of the scenes on the Free plan, the whole script on Director's Cut
- Review and correct the detected elements, then add or merge tags
- Move to the stripboard, let the AI sort by location, character, day or night, INT or EXT and complexity, then adjust by drag and drop
- Check the detected conflicts, such as cast unavailability, overtime and turnaround violations, and ask AI Dude to rearrange the schedule, previewing before you accept
- Generate the budget from the breakdown and the schedule, apply global formulas, fringes and deductions, and set the shooting location for local costs
- Produce call sheets, sides, DOOD reports, storyboards, synopses and coverage on demand
- Invite the crew by email and set access by role: None, View, Edit or Full
- Export to PDF, XLSX, FDX, .mmbx for Movie Magic Budgeting 10, or to Autodesk Flow Production Tracking
Pros & Cons

- Two-way Movie Magic Budgeting interoperability, Autodesk Flow export and advanced content protection with named forensic watermarking and PDF lock
- A permanent free plan with no credit card, free annotations and team invitations on every plan, a dedicated academic offer and a site translated into eleven languages
Cons
- No free trial of the paid plan: section 7 of the Terms states that a permanent Free plan replaces it
- Full AI sits behind a coin system of 1,700 coins per cycle, whose real consumption depends on the operations run
- On the Free plan only 20% of scenes are broken down by the AI and a single active project is allowed, and a fully AI-broken-down project closes if the subscription stops
- Subscriptions are non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise, under section 8 of the Terms
- No public API documentation, since the API is announced at Enterprise level only, and no native mobile app, only a desktop (PWA) installation
- Data hosted and processed in the United States with no European residency option, no published data processing agreement, no EU representative under Article 27 and a Trust Center rendered in JavaScript whose documents are available on request only
- Figures conflict between pages: 40,000+ users in meta descriptions against 45,000+ in the body, and an academic discount announced as up to 70% in a meta description against 20% in the page body
Pricing & Plans
A permanent free plan is available at no cost and without a credit card. The lowest paid entry point is the Director's Cut plan at 79.00 USD per month, or 660 USD per year, which the site displays as the equivalent of 55 USD per month and a 30% saving. The Enterprise plan is priced on request, and the academic offer grants students up to 20% off. Subscriptions are non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise.

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Filmustage handles your data.
GDPR overview
The privacy policy, in force since 13 November 2025, devotes section 10 to the rights of EU and EEA residents under the GDPR. Filmustage, Inc. declares itself data controller, invokes contractual necessity, legitimate interests and consent as legal bases, and lists the rights of access, update, deletion, rectification, objection, restriction, portability and withdrawal of consent, together with the right to lodge a complaint with a local supervisory authority. Requests are made by email to support@filmustage.com. Do Not Track signals are honoured and CalOPPA compliance is also claimed, while SOC 2 Type 2 and TPN Blue Shield are presented as the wider compliance framework. Two limits should be noted: data on users located outside the United States is transferred to and processed in the United States, and no representative is designated under Article 27 of the GDPR.
Who owns the data?
Under section 9 of the Terms of Service, in force since 13 November 2025, an uploaded script is treated as the user's own Content: the user retains all ownership rights over the Script Data, and Filmustage, Inc. expressly disclaims any ownership of the scripts and materials uploaded to the service. The counterpart is responsibility, since the user warrants the legality of what is uploaded and the right to use it. A licence is granted to Filmustage only over Public Content deliberately published through the service. Everything the platform itself supplies, including the software, the interface and the original service content, remains the property of Filmustage, Inc. under section 14.
Reuse rights
Because ownership stays with the user, scripts, breakdowns, schedules, budgets and exported documents can be reused, shared with the crew and carried into any other production tool without asking Filmustage for permission; the only limits are those set by the Content Policy, which lists prohibited AI uses and restricts personal distribution of AI outputs. On the vendor's side, Filmustage, Inc. states that customer content is never used to train, fine-tune or improve AI or machine learning models, on all subscription tiers. AI features run in inference-only mode inside isolated Google Cloud Platform environments, and requests sent to the named third-party providers Google and OpenAI carry settings that forbid training, retention and dataset building; input data is processed in session, with no persistent storage beyond functional or project needs, and is never reused for internal research. Personal data serves service delivery, support, billing, usage analytics and marketing with an opt-out, while AI usage is logged for audit and anomaly detection. Named service providers include Google Analytics, Segment.io, Mixpanel, Hotjar, Intercom, GitHub, Codacy, CircleCI, Google Ads, Twitter, Facebook and Stripe.

Hosting summary
Scripts uploaded to Filmustage are stored on Google Cloud, on servers located in the United States, and AI processing runs in isolated environments on Google Cloud Platform. Encryption of storage and transmission is provided by Google Cloud, which is ISO 27001 certified. The Enterprise page adds that script backups are held on US servers. Section 7 of the privacy policy, in force since 13 November 2025, states that data belonging to users located outside the United States is transferred to and processed in the United States. Payments run through Stripe, at PCI Level 1, and authentication through Auth0 by Okta, whose information security management system complies with ISO 27001 and ISO 27018 and which supports multi-factor authentication. No European hosting region and no data residency choice are offered.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Filmustage.
- Full AI runs on coins, 1,700 per cycle with a fixed cost per operation shown in the app: check that the allowance covers the project before committing
- Unused coins are frozen 30 days after cancellation and then expire, and a project with a full AI breakdown becomes inaccessible if the subscription stops, while manually broken-down projects stay open
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of every cycle and are non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise
- Data is processed and hosted in the United States, including for European users, with no EU residency option, no EU representative under Article 27 and no published data processing agreement
- The minimum age is contradictory: section 12 of the Terms requires 18, while section 18 of the privacy policy states the service is not intended for children under 16
- Published figures do not agree between pages, with 40,000+ users in meta descriptions against 45,000+ in the body, and an academic discount of up to 70% in a meta description against 20% in the page body
- TPN Blue is a published self-assessment and not a certification, as the site says itself, and the AI breakdown still needs a human pass: a testimonial published on the site describes it as getting 70-80% of the way there
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Setup is easy and calls for no technical skill. Filmustage is a web application: the account is created online without a credit card, and the desktop (PWA) installation documented in the help centre is optional. Scripts need no reformatting before import, and a fully broken-down demo project is provided at sign-up. Processing takes a few minutes for English and common languages, up to twenty minutes for rare languages or unusual layouts. AI Dude is driven in plain production language, with no prompt engineering. The crew is invited by email with role-based rights, and onboarding is included on Director's Cut.

Should you pick Filmustage?
Filmustage is strongest where it started: turning a locked script into a breakdown automatically, then carrying that breakdown through a connected chain of schedule, budget, VFX estimate, storyboards, call sheets and sides that stay in sync when the script changes. That continuity, more than any single feature, is what separates it from the point tools it competes with.
Three differentiators are verifiable on the site. SOC 2 Type II and TPN Blue status answer the security questions studios ask before unreleased material leaves their perimeter. The commitment never to train, fine-tune or improve models on customer content applies to every subscription tier and extends to the third-party AI providers used. Two-way Movie Magic Budgeting interoperability, Autodesk Flow export and named forensic watermarking show a product built around the way productions already work.
The reservations are just as concrete. There is no trial of the paid plan, since a permanent Free plan replaces it, so the coin system that meters AI usage has to be understood before committing. Hosting and processing are United States only, with no European residency option, no published data processing agreement and no EU representative under Article 27. The API exists at Enterprise level but has no public documentation, and several published figures disagree from one page to the next.
The audiences best served are line producers and production managers, first assistant directors, VFX supervisors and film schools, which have a dedicated academic offer. For a production that needs a breakdown reviewed rather than typed, and that has to satisfy studio security requirements, Filmustage is a serious candidate, provided its United States data footprint is acceptable.
