Frase
Frase is an SEO and GEO content platform for marketers, in-house SEO teams and agencies. It runs the whole loop in one product: site audit, research, brand-voice drafting, CMS publishing, AI citation tracking and corrective rewrites.
What is Frase?
Frase is a SaaS platform for SEO and GEO content operations, and it presents itself as the content operating system for AI search. The problem it targets has become familiar: a page can rank first on Google and still never be quoted by an AI answer engine, so the click never arrives at all.
The product is built as a five-stage loop rather than a set of separate tools. Listen captures the questions real visitors ask, through an on-site widget called Frase Answers. Create covers research, drafting and image generation. Publish pushes the result into a CMS. Monitor follows both Google positions and AI citations. Fix rewrites whatever has slipped. The entry point is not optional: on day one Frase crawls the customer's site page by page, scores it for SEO and for AI readiness, and returns a list of fixes ranked by impact.
Brand Voice reads content the team has already published in order to learn its style, while SERP and competitor analysis run live. Content Guard watches for ranking and traffic decay on Google, drafts the revision and republishes it once approved, with an opt-in for low-risk fixes. AI Visibility tracks citations daily and reports share of voice with alerts on movement, covering ChatGPT and Google AI from Starter, adding Perplexity on Professional and Claude and Gemini on Scale. An autonomy dial governs how much the agent may do unattended, set content type by content type; every type starts in review and earns publishing rights on its own.
FraseCMS is bundled hosting, free up to 100,000 monthly page views on a Frase subdomain, with structured data and an llms.txt file on every page. Content is written natively in more than 70 languages and locale variants, never translated, with seven Spanish variants alone. Developers reach the same surface through an MCP server, a CLI and a JSON REST API with webhooks, authenticated by an X-API-KEY header.
Frase claims 4.8 out of 5 on G2 and Capterra across more than 500 reviews. The publisher is Frase, Inc., wholly owned by Copysmith AI, Inc. of Birmingham, Alabama.

- Draft a first version in the team's own brand voice
- Score and optimise pages for Google rankings and for AI answer engines
- Publish to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, or host on FraseCMS
- Track AI citations and share of voice on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI

When to use Frase / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Frase is the right fit.
When to use Frase
- In-house content teams at small and mid-sized companies, sized by the Professional plan at USD 103 per month billed yearly, with 3 seats and 5 sites.
- Solo operators, freelance writers and single-site owners, covered by Starter with 1 seat, 1 site and 10 articles a month.
- Agencies and multi-brand marketers who need the Scale tier: 5 seats, 10 domains and client-ready exportable reports.
- Teams that want classic search rankings and AI-engine visibility inside one subscription rather than four separate tools.
- Marketing teams with no dedicated SEO specialist, since the site's own FAQ states that SEO expertise is not required to use the product.
When not to use Frase
- Anyone looking for a permanently free tool: there is no free plan, and entry starts at USD 39 per month billed annually, or USD 49 billed monthly.
- Teams expecting a guaranteed quick win, since Frase states outright that no tool ranks you inside a trial and it will not pretend otherwise.
- Publishers running a portfolio of sites on the cheapest tier, as Starter caps at 1 site, 1 seat and 10 articles a month.
- Organisations that need white-label delivery, a branded client portal, a custom domain or SSO/SAML, all of which are Enterprise-only and quote-based.
- Users who need a mobile app or a non-English interface: no store listing was found, and only an English interface was observed.
How to use Frase
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Sign up self-serve at signin-next.frase.io/sign-up and start the 7-day trial; no credit card is requested and no sales call is needed outside Enterprise.
- Let Frase crawl the site on arrival and read back the list of fixes ranked by impact, which happens without any prior configuration.
- Connect Google Search Console so the platform works from real performance data rather than estimates.
- Connect the CMS (WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix), or choose FraseCMS hosting instead if there is nothing to connect.
- Run the research step and turn the SERP analysis into a brief.
- Generate the first draft in the brand voice, then score and refine it for Google and for AI answer engines.
- Set the autonomy dial content type by content type; every type starts in review until it is granted more.
- Publish, then let AI Visibility and Content Guard monitor positions, citations and decay.
- Optionally drive the same loop from Claude, Cursor or Windsurf through the MCP server, or from the CLI.
- Or call the REST API with a key created in next.frase.io/settings/api-keys, within the plan quota of 250 to 3,000 requests a month.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- One loop instead of several subscriptions: research, drafting, publishing, monitoring and correction sit in the same product.
- Classic search rankings and AI-engine visibility are handled together rather than sold as a paid add-on.
- Human review is the default rather than the upsell: every content type starts in review and nothing publishes on its own until allowed.
- Every integration is included on every plan with no per-connection fee, and the API, MCP server and CLI are available across tiers.
- No surprise invoices: Starter simply stops at its monthly limit, and pay-as-you-go overages are optional and disabled by default.
- Native writing in more than 70 languages and locale variants, including seven Spanish variants, with no translation step in between.
- SOC 2 Type II attested, GDPR compliance claimed, encryption at rest and in transit, and an explicit commitment not to train generalised AI models on customer data.
Cons
- No permanently free plan: entry is USD 39 per month billed annually and USD 49 billed monthly, so the headline price assumes a yearly commitment and paying monthly costs about 25% more.
- The Terms state that all fees paid are final and that no refunds are provided; subscriptions renew automatically and need 30 days' notice before the term ends.
- The licence taken over Customer Data is unusually broad: worldwide, sublicensable, transferable, and extended to Frase's business rather than limited to delivering the Services.
- No data hosting country or region is published anywhere, and no sub-processor list is available.
- No Article 27 EU representative is designated even though GDPR compliance is claimed, and the privacy policy dated January 2025 is older than the Terms dated 26 April 2026.
- A single address, support@frase.io, handles support, legal, GDPR and DMCA, with no direct contact form; the entity is also inconsistent across documents, the Terms naming Frase, Inc. and the privacy policy Copysmith AI, Inc.
- White-label, branded client portal, custom domain and SSO/SAML are Enterprise-only and quote-based, and API quotas are modest on the lower tiers at 250 requests a month on Starter.
Pricing & Plans
Frase does not offer a permanently free plan. Access begins with a 7-day free trial that requires no credit card, after which a paid subscription is required. The lowest price point is USD 39.00 per month for the Starter plan on annual billing; the same plan costs USD 49.00 per month when billed monthly, annual billing carrying a 20% discount across all tiers. Professional is USD 103 per month billed yearly and USD 129 billed monthly, Scale is USD 239 per month billed yearly and USD 299 billed monthly, and Enterprise is quoted on request. Additional seats cost USD 29 per month each on Professional and Scale, and are included on Enterprise. Optional pay-as-you-go overages, disabled by default, are charged on Professional at USD 5 per extra article, USD 0.50 per audit page and USD 0.25 per AI prompt, and on Scale at USD 4, USD 0.40 and USD 0.20 respectively. FraseCMS is a separate add-on priced at USD 0 (Free), USD 19 per month (Basic) and USD 99 per month (Pro), with two months free on annual billing and excess traffic billed at USD 1.00 or USD 0.50 per additional 1,000 page views. Upgrades are prorated immediately and downgrades apply at renewal. The Terms provide for no refunds.

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Frase handles your data.
GDPR overview
The security page states that Frase complies with the EU General Data Protection Regulation, and a GDPR Compliant badge sits in every page footer; a SOC 2 Type II attestation is claimed, documented on an external trust portal at trust.copysmith.ai. The privacy policy's For EU Users section names the controller as Copysmith AI, Inc., 2127 Morris Ave, Birmingham, AL 35203, reachable at support@frase.io. Legal bases listed are contract performance, consent, legitimate interest and legal obligation. Access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, withdrawal of consent and portability are all exercised by email, and the right to complain to a local supervisory authority is mentioned. Three gaps remain: no Article 27 EU representative and no DPO are named, no hosting country, region or sub-processor list is published, and no transfer mechanism such as standard contractual clauses is described.
Who owns the data?
Under the Terms, Customer Data means everything you submit through the Services, and you alone remain responsible for its accuracy, its legality and the rights attached to it; the About FAQ states that customers retain full ownership of their data. The Services and their original content stay the exclusive property of Frase, Inc. In return, you grant Frase a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable and transferable licence to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works from, perform, display and otherwise exploit that Customer Data, both in connection with the Services and for Frase's own business. Anonymised aggregated data assembled from many accounts is owned by Frase, not by the contributing customers.
Reuse rights
The Terms commit Frase not to use Customer Data to develop or train generalised AI or machine learning models that would learn from your content and apply those learnings across other customers; the privacy policy repeats the same exclusion for data obtained through Google Workspace APIs. What Frase does reserve is the aggregated, anonymised or de-identified layer: it feeds analytics, service improvement and industry benchmarks that appear inside the product, in research reports and in marketing content. The safeguards are written down: identifying information and URLs are stripped, aggregation happens at sector level, no published figure may rest on fewer than ten contributing customers, re-identification is prohibited, and the same rules are imposed on third parties. Benchmark participation can be declined by emailing support@frase.io, taking effect within 24 hours on future aggregations, or through the Data Processing Addendum for enterprise customers; reports already published cannot be pulled back. Separately, the privacy policy states that personal data is collected to deliver and improve the service, answer requests and communicate offers, that log data and Google Analytics are used, that general location is stored, that Do Not Track signals are not honoured, and that personal data may be enriched from public sources and marketing or data-enrichment partners. No transfer to non-agent third parties is described.

Hosting summary
No data hosting location is documented. The privacy policy, the Terms and the dedicated security page were all checked, and none of them names a country, a region or a data centre where customer data is stored; no sub-processor list is published either, although the privacy policy names Google Analytics as a third-party provider. What is documented instead is the security posture: encryption at rest and in transit, access controls, regular third-party audits and a SOC 2 Type II attestation, with SSO/SAML available on Enterprise. The publisher and the controller named in the privacy policy are both established in the United States, at 2127 Morris Avenue in Birmingham, Alabama, which makes US jurisdiction the reasonable working assumption; that is an inference from the corporate address, not a published hosting statement. The site's own DNS resolves to Amazon infrastructure (AS16509), but that describes where the marketing site is served and must not be read as a declaration about where customer data lives. Buyers with a data residency requirement should obtain a written answer before subscribing.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Frase.
- Billing is unforgiving: subscriptions renew automatically for equal periods and need 30 days' notice to stop, all fees are final with no refunds, accounts can be suspended 30 days after a non-payment notice, and the Terms also allow discretionary termination without notice.
- The licence granted over Customer Data is worldwide, sublicensable, transferable and covers Frase's business, not only the delivery of the Services, so read it before uploading client material you do not fully own.
- Your content can feed aggregated industry benchmarks published in reports and marketing material; opting out by email takes effect within 24 hours on future aggregations but does not withdraw reports already published.
- The privacy policy describes enrichment of personal data from public sources and marketing or data-enrichment partners, and states that Do Not Track signals are not supported.
- The Google Mail integration asks for permission to read incoming messages and to send email on the user's behalf, which is a wide grant to hand over casually.
- No data hosting location and no sub-processor list are published, and the SOC 2 attestation and trust portal sit on trust.copysmith.ai, the parent company's domain, rather than on frase.io.
- Autonomy is revocable but it accumulates: as more content types earn the right to publish unattended, editorial oversight can quietly thin out, so the autonomy dial deserves to be re-read periodically rather than set once.
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Low for the standard path. Sign-up is self-serve, the trial needs no credit card, no sales call is required outside Enterprise, and Frase claims to work within minutes. The first action needs no configuration at all: the platform crawls the site and returns a list of fixes on its own. Connecting a CMS, Google Search Console, Google Docs or Notion is optional and simple, and the site's FAQ states that no SEO expertise is required. Only the technical path raises the bar: the MCP server, the CLI or REST calls with an X-API-KEY, and Enterprise SSO/SAML, which needs IT involvement.

Should you pick Frase?
Frase is not a newcomer. The domain was registered in 2015, the Wayback Machine's first capture dates from 26 December 2015, and the product has visibly moved on from being a content optimiser to being an SEO and GEO loop that an agent can drive end to end. That shift is the reason to look at it. Audit, research, drafting in brand voice, publishing, citation monitoring and corrective rewriting all sit inside one subscription; human approval is the default rather than an upsell; the MCP server, CLI and REST API are real rather than promised; and the SOC 2 Type II attestation is in place.
The reservations are just as concrete. There is no free plan, the Terms exclude refunds in all circumstances, and the licence taken over Customer Data is unusually broad: worldwide, sublicensable, transferable and extended to Frase's own business. No hosting country or region is published, no sub-processor list exists, and no Article 27 EU representative is named although GDPR compliance is claimed. There is also an entity ambiguity worth flagging: the Terms are in the name of Frase, Inc., while the privacy policy is in the name of Copysmith AI, Inc., the parent company that wholly owns Frase, and the two documents are dated more than a year apart.
As a decision, Frase makes sense for a team already paying separately for a research tool, a writing tool, a rank tracker and an AI-visibility tracker and looking to consolidate them, and for anyone who now needs to be found by AI answer engines as well as by Google. It makes much less sense for someone who wants to explore the category without a budget, because the seven-day trial is the only free way in.
